@@tuttuts560 Well firstly to begin with, most people think tongues is just one language but Apostle Paul makes it it clear in 1 Corinthians 12:10 that there are "different kinds of tongues". If Earth can have thousands of languages what more do you expect of heaven? Now you also have to understand that there are tongues of men and tongues of angels.(1 Corinthians 13:1) When the Power of the Holy Spirit rests on a believer and they recieve the gift of tongues( mind the plurality of the word tongue), they can recieve more than just one language. Now tongues can be experienced as a sign to non believers, this is when a believer speaks in tongues and a non believer hears them speak in his language and recieves a message just like what happened on the day of Pentecost and as Paul clarified in 1 Corinthians 14:22. (Clearly these kind tongues could be understood and interpreted) Then we have prophetic tongues which come as a message from God through a spiritually gifted believer in church, this is the kind of tongue which should be interpreted by someone with a gift of interpretation of tongues, otherwise if not interpreted then the message is unrecieved by the congregation and it edifies no one, that's why Paul said when there is no interprter then the person speaking in tongues should remain quiet and speak to himself and God (1 Corinthians 14:28) An interpreted message through tongues is somewhat equivalent to prophecy, because like prophecy it edifies the entire church, but only when interpreted, otherwise it only edifies the speaker when not interpreted. ( 1 Corinthians 14:4) Most people confuse prophetic tongues with the personal prayer language, Prophetic tongues which I mentioned above are a message from God hence they have to be interpreted for everyone's understanding and edification, but The prayer language,which is part of praying in the Spirit is a prayer between your spirit and God's Spirit and only God can understand these type of tongues, it is private between God and your spirit, (1 Corinthians 14:2)
