We’re in Macomb Township, MI putting in a French drain. We’re hauling out all the clay that we excavate. None of it’s going back in. We always plywood into the property so that we do not disturb the homeowner’s turf. We want to leave it as we found it.
The homeowner had a fence up when I came out to do an estimate so that their pet wouldn’t run up and down the fence where it was so muddy.
Water has a hard time if we don’t have a lot of slope, water has a hard time moving through turf grass. This yard has it’s graded properly. It’s got some pitch, but when water just sits on clay it turns to pudding and it’s just a mess for the children and the pets. So as you’ve seen in all our videos, all the dirt is being hauled out, all the clay, it’s no good. You don’t want to put any of it back. You don’t want to put it back on top. When you put the dirt back on top of the drain system, it will appear as if it is working. If you put a pipe in the ground and you go ahead and… say a contractor, this is something that they do all the time, how to equipped to haul out the dirt, so what do they do? They put a pipe in with a little bit of stone and then they’ll fill the rest of the trench up with the clay and put the sod back over top. If they’re using a trencher, let us tear to side all up and destroy the homeowner’s property. And it basically takes a while for that appearance-wise, to get right. It takes, in most cases, months before the yard mends itself. We’ll cut the sod off the top, laid aside, put it right back on top of the system.
But the reason why the drain will actually work if you put a little bit of clay back over the top of the stone is that it’s now all broken up, but it won’t last forever. What happens is the air pockets as that clay settles and compacts, you know the very reason why farmers are always telling. I know there’s, yeah, a lot of farmers that are practicing a, no-till farming. You know, that’s a whole another thing in itself. But farmers are forced to have to tell because of compaction. Once that soil compacts and all the air pockets are gone, that’s when the system quits working. So that’s why you don’t want to put the clay back over the top of your French drain system. You want to make sure you tell that your contractor that’s doing your install. Look, I want you to remove the clay. All of it. This soil doesn’t perc. It doesn’t perc for a reason. This is poor soil. Get it Outta here. And that’s one of the biggest problems I see out there. Guys are taking the dirt and they’re not equipped to haul it all away. So they’re trying to put the dirt over top of the drain system. So now it doesn’t grab surface water. They’ll actually put inlet basins and aligning with their system to improve it. [...]

FRENCH DRAIN MAN One last question: how much stone should I put on top of the pipe if I’m using it as a drain tile or the basement footer? I have a walkout basement so part of it is about 8 feet below grade or more. While the other footer is at grade in the backyard.
Finally someone who really knows what they're doing with drains. Very impressed by their thoroughness, competence and care taken not to damage the owners yard. I wish we had someone like this contractor in our area.

Great video displaying solid work ethic, technique and guidance. Question-Does the method apply to those who have a sand mixed in with solid?(hauling out the clay)..I live in Florida..

I’m currently working on mine, it’s about 8 feet deep and I’ve dug it all by hand so I’m worried about getting it right. I’m glad I found your video as I was planning on putting the dirt back. Would 4” single ply perforated pipe withstand all the weight above it or should I go with 3 ply and drilled holes. And is it ok to go with about 7-1/2 ft of gravel and 6 inches of clean dirt to top it off?

Question? We have removed all Landscape in our back yard to put in a new deck and patio. Right now we are in a rough grade. Would you recommend the final grade before adding drainage and French drain and irrigation system underground. We want to do it all before final grass placed back in. We are evaluating doing it ourselves

What would you do if a yard has no access to a storm drain to tie into? There is a slight slope that leads to a driveway. No problems with frost in my area.
It’s best to find a good contractor and let him go at it. On the farm we may need to set grade for 1 mile. Huge water volumes better have someone who knows what their doing

On one of your videos (I've binge watched a few and now cannot find it), I saw that you showed a black "y" fitting at the end of the downspout, with one of the y's being a vent/cleanout. What is it called and where do I buy one?

Does that Kubota have some sort of offset so it can dig a straight line, yet be on one side of the ditch?

Most subscribers find a video showing a similar situation. I've made over 600 videos in just 3 years I'm sure if you go to the French Drain Man playlist on You Tube the answer will be in one or more of my videos. Unfortunately yard Drainage systems are not a one size fits all.
The technology you describe has many components. Key is the washed and screened round rock. I get it. Simple physics. It will drain best. In my area, that kind of thing is considered a decorative product (called Glacier Jax) and goes for $240 per yard. Is that way off?
Use 1 1/2" crushed. When you go to that size it really Drains great. I have used it in the passed with no regrets.
Do french drains need to be below frost lines ? Also, do you recommend digging deeper and just using fabric and stone for larger areas to handle water ?
I have been doing some research, and getting ready to put a french drain system in my back yard. the issue is I have no storm drain, and the reality the front of the yard is higher than than the lowest point of the rear of the yard. I am debating on using a dry well system By NDC. with hopes that the with some french drain, and dry well would be enough to help during the wet times, and allow the water to hold and slowly drain into the ground.
Do you have any tips or videos, and system that could work without a drain outlet.

Great video. I've been doing my research and everything you're saying is what I'm finding. I do have a question however. My home here in VA gets water logged and my backyard is the collection point for all of the properties around me. I plan on running a French drain to the backyard. The house is on pier and beam with concrete and bricks. Should I avoid digging next to and around the home and go out further? If so, how far?

What about roots? We live on marsh ground with many mature trees. Current drain in 60 yr old with roots. Still no maintenance?

Pea gravel,drain rock,willl in time will settle, especially by heavy traveled areas by traffic,take a 5 gal bucket fill it up till heaped,take a straight edge and strike it level,then just with fingers tap the sides,it will settle the more tapping or vibration it will settle till compacted,we back filled a loading dock area 3 to 4 feet deep with pea gravel,poured a slab over it with #4 rebar 18 in o/c ,years later did a reconstruction,removed area of slab,and found voids of 1 in or more under slab,many other examples and found the same effect,just saying ,I forgot to mention on the bucket test, it settled 1 in, só 3 buckets 16 in deep,would be 3 in settlement in 4 ft foot of fill

No, we put pipe on fabric.
So does water still escapes trough the bottom of the felt when in the french drain.
It's supposed. Once the soil is saturated the excess of water runs through the French drain pipe.
I am looking at preventing water from going into the ground . I want to channel to take away all the water by using the drain.I am hopping to line the french drain with fabric,leave the top rocks exposed, but want as little water to penetrate the bottom of the felt .Does that make sence.@@FRENCHDRAINMAN

Can you do a video on sump basins in a northern climate, I live in Edmonton Alberta, Canada which is a very cold climate. I don't have a storm drain access and I don't have that much fall to my curb of rear anyway.

I bet if i called you wed be on the phone for hours. You like to talk, I like to talk. We would also talk about how important it is to show up professional, use professional equpt and take care of the customer like you do. You dont just run a trencher up a yard then seed it after you put your junk ADS stuff in the ground (thats gonna fail in 5 months anyway). Some of this info i see on other pages just blows my mind. They call themselves a company, they dig up clay with shovels then re pack it when they put the pipe in. Crazy!
People just look at the price and want cheap........and that's what they get.

None of the home owners I talk to will allow soil replacement. I trun down alot of job because they will just fail, and I don't want that on me.

@@darrinmc mostly money. Seams like the lot of them want a quick fix and don't want to change anything about their lawn. It can be difficult in these tight knit housing developments with poor planning by the developer

The benefits are no leaking basements or water build up behind retainers or water pooling on open land, kinds like a swale as in you are creating an uncompacted channel under the land to collect and transport excess water the way you want and away from basement walls, away from the areas behind retainers and away from the squishy parts of your land.... a good french drain system can have you yard clear of water in hours after a good rain, prevent basement blow and stop that retainer from just slumping down like a mud slide... but if you are going to do it... do it well, dig properly and pay for what you have to pay for... trust you dont want to be the one digging out a diy frenchy that was made using pvc drilled holes pipe 😂😂😂 oh how thay brittle pipe has collapsed is amazing 😂😂😂 and also super horrible to repair 😂😂

I have absolutely zero doubt that your drains work. You are doing things the right way. However, there has got to be a way you can be less condescending in your videos.
LOL. Honestly, I used to be a landscaping contractor, i used to do a lot of fixing up of peoples rubbish work. I really hated doing it, its not even about the money in the end its just why am I doing this again?
