Old guy with no guitar experience here: this is an excellent tutorial to get stuck in. A lot of understanding packed into a simple method. Thank you very much (and thank you Jeff for bringing it up).
6:20 Magic , this whole tutorial! For this section you say you have to have every letter name in a scale or key. I guess conversely and which might be simpler for me is that : You do not us the same letter twice in a key, hence we can't use a given letter in the key twice, so since we used 'A' min, we don't call A # , A # we call it Bb .
For as long as I've played guitar (poorly I might add) and despite the fact I generally understand key and scale theory, I had never put this together. Brilliant. Thank you
Thank you again, Ian. I grow weary of every advertisement these days with people aping the "Mind Blown" motions, yet that is precisely what happens to me as I play with different lessons on my guitar and start to internalize them and to "stitch" the different lessons together Lots of "Ah Hah!" moments. This seems like it will be so helpful in working out songs and understanding keys. All your lessons are great. I'm working my way through the Arpeggio Master Class as well.
I always like how I IV V and ii iii vi fit together like Tetris blocks. That's how I "see" them. And the same thing happens with the I on an A-string root. I need super simple stuff like this to keep my place on the neck 👍🏼
So helpful!!! I’ve been playing for 30 years and I never thought of this. Seems like it’s so fundamental but it’s a lesson I’ve never visualized so easily until you explained it.
Been looking for a lesson explaining this for so long, always just looking up notes to a key and never understanding how it connected, this did it perfectly thank you! Stitch is the best
I love when I know what the fuck an instructor is talking about but I still learn something!!! Years ago I got called up on stage in a bar in Key West, the band's guitarist said, "Blues, 1,4,5 in "A", 8 bars and a turnaround. First time through I'll take 4 then you take 4, then we'll each solo a full 8 and finish with a "dualie", can you handle it"??? I'm soooooo glad I knew wtf he was talking about!!! It went so well we got a standing ovation 😁. It could've been a disaster but getting out and jamming with people while I was learning taught me the much needed lingo I needed to communicate ideas without having to explain them in depth. This is VERY VALUABLE if you have a paying crowd or if you're paying for studio time!!! Great lesson here... Communication is EVERYTHING when collaborating on ANYTHING!!!
thank you. Very easy to follow and explained really simply. You can never stop learning and this about a guitar being a pattern based instrument has opened my eyes and a light bulb has just clicked.
Exactly, it's something that just comes up as you learn barre shapes, but for a complete beginner or someone struggling to make sense of theory this video is a goldmine and a lifesaver :)
I have to subscribe for this episode alone, I've never seen any of 'his' videos, this video has taught me more than I've learned in decades regarding chords in a key, or should I say chords in major keys.
Yet another lesson I should know but only saw the notes on the E string despite knowing the notes on the A string just never put it together, but there goes another piece to the puzzle, thanks
hellow my fellow friend! i'm brazilian and a big fan of your videos thank you for being this wonderful human being, the world needs people like you! you know bob ross? you are the bob ross of guitar lessons! thanks a lot, farewell peace
The first dime I was compelled to spend on guitar instruction was Ian's Blues course. It was a bargain then, and it's still paying me dividends. Mind kinda blown...so simple, so important, so fun!
Very cool lesson. It really helped me to put together bar chords in a Key, which I've been learning them separately from each other. Oh and by the way this is the first time I've ever seen this lesson on TH-cam, totally new info , gave me a mini breakthrough. Thanks brother!
2,5,6 or ii,V,vi in C is also a D Dorian. The chord progression also determines the mode. This may be a little further down the line.. Spoiler alert!!! Once that concept is understood, its much easier to think in terms of modes than thinking all the way through the major key.
Funny that you posted this, I have been working on this lately but the explanation you gave made it click. Quality as always and not afraid to be human in your vids
It's nice to know how many sharps and flats in a key , but this lesson is more useful to me than any of that other 'stuff', that I forget in a week, this is not something that I could easily forget.
I needed to play bass for a crazy good keyboardist at one point in life. He taught me this on single notes for all compositions and called it the Nashville Number System ... said many studio musicians that don't read use it. Stitch ... ever heard it called this? Same thing?
Thank you for this video so helpful just got a looper and I can now play these chord progressions and loop the lead over the top of it... fantastic stuff man you're awesome👍🍻
I appreciate the clarity and insightful nature of all your lessons. Can you please do a variation on this that covers the 1-4-5 with the E shape and A shape caged chord and scale pattern as the starting point staying in the same position?
Your like half Jerry Garcia, half Care Bear. We all need more Stitch in our lives. Thanks as always, bud.
I would love to see this man play in a dead cover band
So well said!!!
Or a fuzzy yoda
He is the best. His love of teaching and joy comes through.
Love this comment so much.. much love Brent and Stich :)

Stitch: “two frets up and it’s minor”
Also stitch: *flips me off”

I’m going to watch this video over and over again. This may be the most consequential theory lesson I’ve ever had.
Spread the word👍😬
For as long as I've played guitar (poorly I might add) and despite the fact I generally understand key and scale theory, I had never put this together. Brilliant. Thank you
holy COW this was elucidating and i've been noodling for almost 20 years at this point

Completely agree. How is it possible something so simple was never introduced?!

Probably the best guitar teacher on youtube!
This was of great help, now I can noodle properly thanks Mr Stitch
This is a very valuable lesson, even though I already know this (thanks to you Ian), not everyone does. Easy to understand.
Exactly, it's something that just comes up as you learn barre shapes, but for a complete beginner or someone struggling to make sense of theory this video is a goldmine and a lifesaver :)

Game changer for the newbie...thanks

An abacus for finding the note layout of each key - that's pretty cool. Couple less printouts I need laying around and a lot easier to see this way 👍
I always learn something useful from you ❤
