In today’s video, I’ll be unboxing, setting up and reviewing the Meural Canvas 2 by Netgear. The Meural Canvas 2 is a dedicated digital display frame to display art, artistic photography and even just regular photos. The Meural Canvas ii is currently available in two sizes: 16 x 24 (with a screen size of 21.5 inches diagonally) and 19 x 29 (with a screen size of 27 inches). It also comes in four different frame finishes: black, white, dark wood and light wood. I’m going to be looking at the 21.5 inch version with a Black frame. Now it’s important to remember when picking the right size of Canvas ii, that the sizes Netgear specifies for the device are the overall size of the frame. For example, my Meural Canvas ii measures 16 inch by 24 overall and the screen size is 21.5 inches. The Meural Canvas ii is also less than 2inches deep when mounted to a wall- not obtrusively bulky or thick. Let’s first get the device out of the box and set it up. Once you open the box up you’ll first find a card that reminds you that you need to get the Meural app for your device. We’ll get to that soon. Next, you’ll see the Meural Canvas ii which is wrapped and sandwiched between two foam end caps. You want to get it out of the box and unwrap it. We will get back to it in a moment. Once you remove all the other cardboard supports, you’ll see a small box which contains quite a few important items, like some useless legal documentation, the power cable, the wall anchors, the mounting plate with with a built-in level and a pad that you can use to lean the device against. Now lets start prepping the Meural Canvas 2 for setup. You want to first place the unit, face down, on a table or sturdy surface. It’s advisable to place the thin rectangular piece of packing foam on the table before placing the unit face down on the table. This protects the frame from getting scratched up. Next, you’re going to need to get hold of a small flat screwdriver, a butter knife will also work, in case you don’t have a screwdriver. Press and hold the tab on the compartment on the back of the unit and gently pry it upwards with your screwdriver or butter knife. Remove the compartment and set it aside. Removing the cover reveals a power jack and an ethernet jack, in case you don’t want to use wifi to connect to the device. Now plug the power connector into the power jack and route the cable through the slot in the middle. Now route the power adapter through the hole in the center of the compartment cover. Put the compartment cover back in and press down till it snaps into place. You now want to lean the Canvas 2 against a wall, plug the power adapter into a wall outlet and then power the device up to test it, before we wall mount it. To power the device up, there is power button on the bottom left hand edge of the frame. As you look for that power button, you’ll notice that there’s an SD card slot and micro usb port in a compartment, right next to the power button. More about the SD card slot in a second. Once the Meural Canvas 2 powers up, and goes through it’s boot sequence, it’ll display this message that asks you to download the Meural app. That’s all the testing we need to do for now.

Outstanding instructions. I just purchased the II and was a bit perplexed. No info. None. Fortunately, I found your review. My confidence in the Netgear brand led me to this purchase, blindly. You my friend, have provided me sight and insight. Truly a remarkable product. The technology once available to very few is now accessible to all.
    Thank you very much. -Sim

Great review, thanks. How long is the adapter cord? Planning on running it through the wall up to the unit and hoping I get enough to reach a power outlet further down on the wall

I know this comment is 2 years old, but is that what you ended up doing? I am. I know we have all been told to not run power cables through walls, but then I talked to an electrician and he confirmed that you are not supposed to run *regular* 120V power through walls... but low voltage is fine, which is what the Meural cable is -- that's what that giant brick of plug does... it transforms the power down to 12V.

Hmm, we try to show some pictures. But if we wanna show the pictures that we made, canvas says: "Update failed, canvas out of space".
On my account I see "0,0gb out of 4.0gb" but the pictures won't show or download, do you know why? we try to do a factory reset, but it doesn't work.

I see in your video it only has an SD card slot, but I've read elsewhere there is a USB slot as well. Does it have both?
Also, when uploading your own photos, to what I guess they call a playlist, does it allow you to run them as a slideshow? ...and then orient them properly?

    • @Reviewlamp

About loading your own pics, can it play them in a slideshow format from the usb, or internal memory?

@@Reviewlamp What I read on reviews, is that it is really not very suited for displaying your own photos from the SD card or USB.
The app apparently doesn't interact with that functionality at all, and it needs undocumented setup features to work at all.
I was hoping you would show how those that used with this device.
I would like to use it to show my own photos, and not use the subscription at all. Can it load photos from a (Netgear) NAS solution over the network?

Hello, do you know any display that has an actual image area with a 3:2 aspect ratio? this one was great until you showed you own pictures (which generally are 3:2) I personally don't like that and it's a deal breaker for me, cheers

    Great and very compete review!
I read some bad reviews on a the site of a Dutch store. These buyers don't seem to be aware of the app since they complain about the device not being suited to display your own photos.
In your opinion is it worth the price if you primarily want to use it to show your own photos made with a smarthpone? Or does it really need photo's made by a professional? The art is also cool, however I am looking for large frame for photos of loved ones, but it is quite an investment.

    • @Reviewlamp
      @Reviewlamp  4 ปีที่แล้ว

It is definitely fine for displaying non-professional photos

Crying shame they don't use a standard picture aspect ratio and instead go for the cheap widescreen aspect ratio. (Which is fine if all you do is display video.) Great review, though!

    • @Reviewlamp

That’s definitely a valid point. It can display other aspect ratios, however there will be letterboxing.

Membership just became a major rip off. Used to be you’d get anything in their library with the purchase of a membership. Now, you buy the membership, but you still need to pay for individual pieces of work. They gave some ridiculous PR customer service type answer as to why, but they’re just trying to make money. Here’s a comparison. Let’s say Netflix charged you your $10/month, but then made you buy each movie and TV show you watch as a separate charge. That’s what Meural is doing.
