3rd option: the spartan branch is disbanded as augmentations get more widespread and having literally every single infantryman in one branch of the military is a bad idea And then ONI kidnaps a bunch of kids to give them the kind of enhancements no one else can survive and we're back where we started
In the books a few space assault troopers from the 21st black daggers get captured after an operation and we're being tortured. But they mad lads in all their glory, just laughed in the face of the elites who tortured them. A pretty gangster moment among many in the books
The Kilo 9 books cover the reaction of a couple of ODSTs to finding out the details of the spartan project if your intrested. I think its Mortal Dictata that goes fully into it
The Kilo 9 books are fucking awesome and it really just makes the handling of Halo by 343 even worse. Jul 'Mdama's a fascinating character and all the stuff they set up with Halsey being a scapegoat for ONI authorizing the SPARTAN program in the first place but all of that is let down by the games.
In one of my favorite D&D games I got to play in, we were on a spelljammer and needed to take out an elf base that was heavily defended from the ground. The way we did it was to give our Dwarf paladin a ring of feather fall, a helm that let him breath in space, and a cape of fireproofing. Then we dropped him from orbit. We named the order that was founded after him the ODSTs. For orbital dwarf shock troops!
Oddly, enough there is actually a common magical item in Eberron that basically combines all of that into one thing for the purposes of dropping people from ships...there was an entire part of the old "Living" campaign that used them for semi-military deployments.
That is the story that makes legends! The only thing better would be if the enemies called the dwarf, a helldiver because that’s the most intimidating name they could think of.
God bless Heinlien or whoever first gave us the trope of dropping soldiers from orbit. Its just so damn cool and there is a reason why its been so popular in sci fi
The ICARUS troop transport was a real proposal for a giant rocket that would carry 12,000 troops from thr ground, to orbit, and then land them anywhere on earth within an hour. It never happened because it would have been insanely expensive, and the US already having friendly bases all over the world and a huge navy to travel between them was seen as being good enough.
@@RipOffProductionsLLC That twelve thousand passenger payload seems unrealistically large for a rocket. Just how big was this monstrosity supposed to be?

Halo odst will always have a special place in my heart for being my first halo game and being my first person shooter game such a great story and characters.still mad at 343 for killing rookie in a fucking book
Before helldivers, we had the ODST. Before the ODST we had starship troopers. Man, the mobile infantry is such a good idea, such a scarily destructive idea, that it will never get its time on the silver screen or video game. Kudos to Halo for its Spartans. They come closest to what a mobile infantry can do.
They're definitely cooler, but from a logistics perspective, IVs are very practical to have. You can not tell me with a straight face that giving buck energy shields and boosting his physical capabilities was a bad decision.
The first time I’ve was exposed to the trope of sci fi soldiers in drop pods was Tiberian Sun, GDI had drop pods as a special ability in that game. I think the codified was Starship Troopers (the novel,) and obviously 40K space marines have it too, but I think the OFSTs are the most memorable incarnation as things currently stand. Helldivers may overtake them if it keeps up this momentum, but the satirical tone of the game makes for a different feel, and hell, they’re standing on the shoulders of giants anyway
Elite soldiers dropping into war from above is an idea as old as the first man to throw themselves out of a perfectly good plane with a parachute and rifle to their chest. Its only expanded on since then.
One should remember that UNSC has wide access to incredible medical technology, medical technology that can fix most chronic medical problems that would prevent a person from becoming a soldier. So the UNSC had a lot of people that were physically absolutely capable of passing the training, but did not have the mindset, which is a generous way of saying they didn't have that special kind of brain damage that makes people wiling jump out planes on the regular, nevermind into enemy fire. The takeaway is this, you who are reading this, you could like have become an ODST if you really wanted to, because the UNSC had the medical technology to make you strong enough to actually do it.

I went immediately from this to the ODST trailer video. That thing went so freaking HARD and it came out of nowhere. Such a good ad. Man, those were the days.
0:54 For any of you not well versed into Halo lore the Spartans IIs were in fact not orphans but literally taken from their families and replaced with clones, so the family wouldn't suspect their child was stolen to become jacked up super soldiers named after a warrior people who would throw their babies down pits if they were deformed, so take that the Info as you will considering just under half of the Spartan IIs died from the biological augmentation procedures. (They were teenagers)
At least one Spartan II candidate was taken by ONI from orphan-like conditions, and the general profile of Spartan III candidates I think broadly fits the descriptor "orphan" but yeah if we're talking about IIs then "orphan" really isn't the best characterization
From an in-universe perspective ignoring fan love, I’d imagine that ODSTs end up becoming a subsection of Spartan IVs or maybe even Spartan Vs. While normal Spartan IV/Vs do normal Spartan things, the Spartan ODSTs do normal ODST things, but as Spartans. We’ve already seen some Spartan Helljumpers like Alpha 9, so the natural in-universe continuation would be Super ODSTs.
I can imagine, realistically, the ODST core remains into the halo timeline to deal with normal human threats, whereas the spartan IV's and beyond exist to take on alien threats.

Genuinely really happy to see more halo content. I’ve been watching and rewatching your other halo vids which persuaded me to play through the original trilogy over the last month and a half for the first time. I was very pleasantly surprised how well they hold up

8:41 Very minor correction, I think he only killed 3 of them. The last guy was just very very very injured. And you didn’t mention this, but I find it interesting that John was not trying to kill them. He’d only recently been augmented, so he had no idea going into that fight the damage he would be doing.
The HALO TV series might be the hottest of hot trash, BUUUUUUUTTTT a while ago we got the largely okay Forward Unto Dawn. There's some talk about ODSTs in a tactical seminar but there's a brief moment (when the Covenant attack) that the ODST drop straight on the school. And for those several seconds, not only do the students know how bonkers they are, how chaotic it is them dropping here means the situation is, but the ODST just get the fuck to work. And I lose my goddamn mind every time.
343’s obsession with Spartans and the creations of 4’s and 5’s has kneecapped so much of the universe has honestly made it worse I genuinely don’t know how 343 can fix their dog shit world building
My two ideas for an ODST game: ●A tactical squad shooter in the vein of _Rainbow Six_ or even _Republic Commando_ ●A stealth game where you play a single ODST sneaking through enemy territory

Greetings Sir Pancreas No Work, I am a Herald of High King Thorgrim Grudgebearer, and I have come to you with news. It has come to the attention of the Karaz Ankor that you have made several Do or Don't videos on Elgi factions, but have not made one on the Honorable Dwarfs. Combined with the fact that you have also made videos praising the vile Raki and Grobi, and the High King has placed you in the Book of Grudges. A Throng has been sent from Karaz-a-Karak to right this wrong. The High King has said, however, that if you do a Do or Don't on one of the Dwarf related factions from 40k, AOS, or Total War, the grudge will be settled and you will be allowed to live in peace. PS. If you make it on the Chaos Dwarfs, we will send Gotrek after you.

Fun fact, a functional drop pod could be created with modern technology. NASA actually considered it to be used as escape pods on stations and/or shuttles in the case of emergencies. The only reason they were never made was cost, as the tech would be very very very expensive current day
you gotta check out the Kilo-Five trilogy, Glassland, Thursday War, and Mortal Dictata. takes place a few years after H3, and follows an ONI team of 3 ODSTs, a Spartan 2, an ONI Officer/Spook, and BB Oni's personal Smart AI (Like Cortana). They are tasked with fueling both sides of a civil war that breaks out on the Elites' homeworld. It shows a cool perspective of what ODSTs think of Spartans, especially when working together in the field. definitely worth a ready
Getting rid of the ODST's just cause Spartan IV's exist would be like saying the United States has Special Forces so we can get rid of the Ranger Regiment, or we have SEAL teams so we no longer need the Marines Force Recon. Or if you want a 40k equivalent we have Adeptus Custodes so we no longer need Space Marines. Surely the Spartan IV's are hella expensive to make and train, and not every situation demands the best of the best. Sometimes you need a good middleman that would inflict an unreasonable amount of casualites if you send your regular baseline infantry, but don't quite wanna risk all the training, experience, and (let's be honest) price tag of your most elite units

Even if they’re not as hardy as Spartans they’re arguable braver to go into impossible situations with unpowered armor and no augmentations
To the ODST it was the most significant Helljump of their life. To the Spartan, it was Tuesday.
ODST's are so damn cool, I use their armor every chance I get in the Halo games

God bless Heinlien or whoever first gave us the trope of dropping soldiers from orbit. Its just so damn cool and there is a reason why its been so popular in sci fi
The ICARUS troop transport was a real proposal for a giant rocket that would carry 12,000 troops from thr ground, to orbit, and then land them anywhere on earth within an hour.
It never happened because it would have been insanely expensive, and the US already having friendly bases all over the world and a huge navy to travel between them was seen as being good enough.

A less famous cousin of the ODST are Army Paratroopers who field the AIR-ASSUALT helmet, itself a supposed improvement of the ODST helmet.
So long as the tradition continues, and in good measure, those that came before can rest easy.

They are tasked with fueling both sides of a civil war that breaks out on the Elites' homeworld. It shows a cool perspective of what ODSTs think of Spartans, especially when working together in the field. definitely worth a ready
As a kid playing halo, I always thought the ODST were bonafide badasses even when compared to the chief
I imagine really strong potential for a story about ODST’s in 2560 who haven’t decided to be S-IV yet, for reasons we get to explore in game
The ODSTs will be to the Spartan 4 program what the space marine scouts are to the battle brothers in full ceramite plate.
