Have been watching (and learning and enjoying) your videos for a few years. I love the last couple of ones where you just sit and talk about some of your history. This is just simply one of the best musician channels on the web. Mostly because of your long experience and also your humbleness and honesty.
The hx stomp for me is certainly a piece of gear that changed everything. Not only can I get almost any sound I can need out of it but there’s also so much info sharing between users of the device!
And it’s so well supported with updates for gear that has been around so long!

I’ve been playing bass guitar for about thirty years and for the longest time I was not an effects user, but I always chased a sound that I got at a show when I was seventeen; I was using the bass amp of a band playing after me and the tone was amazing, it had a beautiful tight bottom end and a growling high end. For years and years I could never get that sound.
Flash forward to about three years ago and a friend introduced me to Darkglass pedals for the bass. Within 5 minutes I had dialed in that sound with ease. It was a revelation and has rejuvenated both me and my playing.
I now play bass in a rock band and I am attempting to create ambient music using my bass and several of the pedals that you have mentioned on this channel.
A volume pedal and delay changed my approach after hearing Norwegian guitarist/composer Terje Rypdal back in the 70's. Also finding out how much a guitar pick changed my tone and to some degree my picking technique when I came across some thicker V-Picks. This led me to find some other brands made from different materials. Just received a couple dozen JD 205 & 208 picks (but V-Picks continue to be my favourite). Picks are an inexpensive way to change up your tone and articulation. Thanks for all you do and share with the guitar community, Bill... it's truly inspiring!
Agreed on trying different types of picks - as you say - they can make an outsized difference on tone and playing. Also - I'm a fan Terje. I had all of his earlier albums on vinyl, and then got 'em own CD!

I'm surprised at how many guitarists I've known who never try experimenting with different picks.... and I also have Mr. Rypdal's music on vinyl and CD. :0) There's a video here on YT called "50 Years of Terje Rypdal ECM Albums (1970-2023)" for anyone interested in exploring his music further. Lots of parallels Bill. I used a valve powered reel to reel that I found in a rubbish pile for delay and fuzz in the 70's. Volume pedal changed my style, I used a crybaby with a 500k log pot and a treble bleed circuit. It got stolen... Ebow, check. Baritone, I'm currently building an acoustic and an electric one. Cheers for this video. Nice to hear a bit of what has shaped your style.
My current game changer is the Boss RC10R. Forget the rhythm bits, useful as they are, I have a dual switch programmed to "next loop" and "last loop". 100 loops available to switch between on the fly makes for great moving soundscapes to perform over.

Ahaa you are an interesting discovery (new sub).
My story(abridged): been playing since 1982 age 12. Discovered ambient cloudscapes at the cusp of the 80s/90s using a Boss volume pedal and, graduating from a WEM copycat tape echo, to the Yamaha REX50, discovered digi delay feedback could be set to infinite. Then I bought an additional little Zoom multi FX and discovered the extra texture of adding 3rds, 4ths, or perfect 5ths via Pitch Shift. So for 20 odd years I'd occasionally experiment with this very different approach, thinking okay it sounds very nice but not sure what to do with it. Very different to the McLaughlin approach I've been pretty much a disciple of for so many years.
Few years ago find myself homeless so music has had to be put to the side somewhat as I drift about. Now I suddenly find everyone's bringing out how to play ambient guitar videos. I'm like Dayum...I missed an opportunity! (This is in no way a point against you, I can tell you are old school,)
I look forward to checking out your Fripp video. I wonder ...have you heard "A Private View" by Bill Nelson. I bought an Ebow just so I could learn those sublime soaring guitar parts.
This guy has some very, very cool sounds. Comes at electric guitar from a different angle. Much to learn from him.

Bill, definitely the e-bow. And I really have been messing with stacking delays since I’ve been watching you. Lots of fun and really cool sounds, oh and the Ehx sitar pedal.
I know it's not a guitar, but as a guitar playing composer, THE game changer was an Atari Mega 2 with Steinbergs Cubase and a Fostex R8 bought in 1989.
Suddenly, I was in control of the creative process and I wasn't watching the clock.
My Colorsound volume swell pedal which I got in the 70's... Still got it, still works..!!!
That is Kick Ass Bill! My Stepfather had one of those Reel to Reel Tape Decks and I can't remember anything I've heard since that sounded so Wonderful! Analog is still Magical! You should talk even more about Your beginnings and....Show us more Photos of Your Evolution! Love What You do!

My Fender Telecaster, Roland JC amp, and the Boss DD-200, RE-2, and FV pedals. Those are still the only two delays I own and I’ve never for a second felt like I needed more. Endless inspiration and sounds.

Almost bought a Morely volume myself cause of your videos (I already have the Morely wah). Your volume swells have always been especially good
And I've got an e-Bow, the original chrome one.
When they were introduced in England in 1978, I rushed out to the guitar shop and found they were £100 ($125) - my guitar had only cost me £60 and I couldn't afford £100 for an effect.
A year later, the same shop was having a sale.
I guess they hadn't managed to sell many e-Bows, as they had it marked down to £50.
So I bought one.
And I still use it today, for live work and recording - it's nearly 45 years old and still works fine.
And I've still got the leather holster for the e-Bow :)

I'd not previously considered the significance of influential gear prior to watching this video, Bill. It's an interesting topic and clear to see how the five items you have chosen are at the core of your sound. I adore The Light In The Forest. It is one of my favourite pieces of yours and, in that context, I would also list the volume pedal as a game-changer for my playing. Hearing Alex Lifeson use one way back when really caught my imagination, and then when I began playing ambient guitar, it definitely influenced my approach to composition and performance. The Strymon Big Sky has been another significant piece for me. That thing is just an engine of atmospheric sounds! Moving away from ambient guitar, it has been the combination of analogue delay (the Boss DD20 and EHX Canyon are favourites) with a wah pedal (Vox Cry Baby) to create sweeping, synth-like, filtered arpeggios. I use that a lot!
I'm still rocking my 1970's Morley WVO Wah Volume. I love it. Alex Lifeson's intro on Xanadu made me say, how'd he do that? An old guitar teacher traded me for some pot. I still got the Morley... I'm sure his pot is long gone! :) I'm really enjoying your videos Bill... keep up the good work and thank you!
I still have the first pedal I ever owned. The Boss PS2. Never use the pitch shift but always use that delay. And then the HX Stomp. That’s enabled me to record silently and remove string noise from ambient tracks/sections. I have 2 albums out and the first one had string noise. It’s quiet but with the HX Stomp it’s eliminated. Album three comes out 1st September. You would enjoy innocence’s experience it’s one of two purely ambient tracks on the album. It’s out on TH-cam.
The Mesa Studio Preamp is what changed my life. I no longer have one, but I became a life long Mesa user after using a Studio Preamp for years, as it was my first "real" amp. It helped me learn recording, as well as dialing in a pre gain stage tone stack. Being able to dial in what you need from pedals and amps can be great tool, especially when time is of the essence.
Three pieces of gear that have been life changing for me.
Tube Screamer style overdrives. It doesnt matter a lot which one since I just used it to tighted up the low end.
My ibanez RgIB6 baritone. I'm a metal guy and this is by far the best sounding low tuned guitar I've ever used.
Most recently, the AxeFX3. Not only are the options it provides amazing but it makes recording a breeze. I used to record with a loadbox which was a pain to set up, resulting in me recording less.
I had a Peavy Profex rackmount guitar processor when I was a teenager. I worked and saved to get it and it changed how I approached effects completely. I am still more of an individual pedal kind of guy but I keep a few multieffect units around (mainly boss gp10 and sy1000). They definitely have a place. Also, the Roland gr-1 opened up the world of guitar synthesizers for me.
That piece of music you're playing on the Thunderhawk with the harmonics sounds awesome.

Don Ross is incredible. My brother introduced me to him when I was a teenager. I learned a few of his songs and I've seen him live 3 times. He is incredible.
For me the game changers were:
The axe fx II. I had been putting off buying a lot of pedals/amps because I saw the potential in this gear. So I got access to all these effects at once. And after all these years I can still make new sounds I like.
For me it was my first baritone guitar as well. It gave me a much more interesting sonic range than a normal guitar.
And maybe not so much gear but I bought a guitar that was tuned to open C and this tuning is such a delight to play in. I just love the atmosphere it brings.

for me it was getting a guitar with a floyd rose. never played floating bridges befofre. it completely changed my playing. I was it almost all the time when playing chords for very subtle chorus effect and I like to be very dynamic with speed. either acting as an Triangle LFO with speed or going musically random. combing the two makes playing interesting tension voicing even more interesting. and I also use it while playing single notes (not all the time it ain't the 70's hair rock era anymore)

Thanks! Let me make sure I am clear here - the Akai was patched into the mixer to provide the tape delay effect on my guitar. We then connected the mixer to a Teac A-3440 4 channel reel deck to record the band.

I love that you kept all your old gear it’s wonderful! Now I’m a bassist but I love ambient music and play it a lot. My first is the line 6 verbzilla my first reverb which open the door to it all. My second is the tech 21 sans amp programmable one the fact it a svt in a box says it all. Plus you can get the big dirty sounds with out the cops being called. Third would be the boss odb-3 can’t live with out that drive my first real drive and still use it even with all the other drives out there haha. My fourth would be the hx stomp. That got out of trouble in my apartment at the time. My fifth is the fender pbass. Simple easy and your off.
Roland GP16. I created hundreds of patches on it and it taught me all about creating tones.
Light gauge strings. Sorry to say it took 30 years to figure out I can play much better with 9s instead of 10’s.
Flow picks-I was mailing my own picks out of old coins-very time consuming and difficult. Flow picks use the same shape and bevel. Between those picks and Troy Grady, my picking improved significantly.
Biggest was making my own guitar from good parts. Totally changed my playing style and sound. One pickup, one volume and all amazing. You hear it all the time, but less is more, at least with guitars. All the tones have to come from changing my position and attack, kind of like an acoustic. It’s one less thing to distract you.
Got that same chrome Morley in my signal path for the past 35 years.
Reactive load boxes for me. Improved my recordings and saved my hearing.
Morley. I don't come across that brand very often. I was very much in the market for a vol pedal in the early 90s, inspired by the ethereal floating swelling notes of ('70s to present day) Hank Marvin and Mark Knopfler. I settled on an affordable Boss pedal but learned about the comparatively expensive Morley with its robust construction and excellent smooth rocker action under the foot.
That's a very interesting use for a reel to reel - patching it through the send/return buss on your recording set up. Knowing you are ambient inclined, as soon as you hauled it out, I thought you were going to mention Frippertronics.
I figure you must have begun experimenting with recording techniques a few years earlier than I. I began in '83 age 13, using my parents stereo, recording a part, then recording the result on my tape machine, through open air using my tape machine's inbuilt mic, while positioning myself inbetween and accompanying the track. Tons of signal degradation, but fun, especially finding cheap machines that could record a signal from one machine to another via cable (5pin DIN) while simultaneously being able to accept a secondary signal through a microphone.
By the start of the '90s I had a Fostex X26 4 track cassette which I freaking loved. And a primitive Yamaha REX50 multi fx which couldn't chain fx but was very tweakable with lots of parameters. A couple years later my Tascam 244 blew the Fostex away with its double speed cassette motor. Much better sound quality.
These days the tech available, new and second hand, is just wonderful. I look forward to getting back into it after this present spate of homelessness.

I had two Akai 4000DS tape decks - I recorded with them (bouncing between them) and also used them for Frippertronics.
Sadly, eventually the heads wore out.
It would have to be my Guild acoustic baritone and the Fishman loudbox mini acoustic amp.
Just opened up a new layer of sound and breathed new life into the chords.
Love it.
Oh and the Blair electronic bagpipes. They are awesome.

first up was definitely my frontline wah . I left it 3/4 cocked to bite through the mix and have a tight location for guitar in the mix . That carried my sound for a decade.
My two indispensable game changing distortions were first the original Marshall Shred Master ( the new ones appear to suffer quality control issues ) and later the Boss Metal Zone , both can be difficult to drive , specially if you don't know your way around the sort of eq you get on a mixing desk. But when you learn how to to sculpt tone with them it's 10 steps up from the DS1 i Started with.
The Boss Ps2 is probably the most versatile pedal you can own without buying a multi effects pedal. Not just Pitch shift, for your mad moments, but also it was my introduction to the power of delay pedals , and if you set the pitch shift just right it's better at chorus than 90% of chorus pedals. (for Chorus it's the second best I've EVER heard after my unsurpassed-by-anything-at-any-price Amdeck stereo Chorus)
Much later The EHX Oceans 12 showed me a whole new world of reverb textures of all kinds. I'll never make enough money from music to justify the cost of the Strymons of this world , but this gets me close enough to not mind, and to make music like I never would have made before. Affordable AND usable ...at last!
"Also rans" are ; Line 6 M13 , oh I just need THIS sound for 8 seconds, Donner Sophgate ( I also play metal and it's a no brainer for that), Rowin Slow Hand -ambient swells for those unable to stand on one leg all night, EHX Deluxe Bass Big Muff revitalised my will to play bass permanently.
Zoom 9002, Line 6 DL4, Boss RC-300, Empress Zoia, Kernom Ridge. Honourable mention: Telecaster
for me it all changed when I got a Line 6 DL4.
In the days before TH-cam that 28 second looper taught me about layering, ambiance and how to solo over a rhythm backing. I think that was around 2002.

My volume pedal introduction was from Robert Fripp. I butchered a Vox Wah pedal as my first volume pedal.
My first delay "pedal" was a bucket-brigade circuit I built using an engineering notebook and parts I bought from Radio Shack.
I love all the music you've created with that UD Stomp. I have a Magic Stomp, because of you, and Allan, of course.
Early life changing gear for me goes back to 1977: The Maestro Echoplex, YES INDEED! My first delay machine! Always had delay on my board ever since. Then the MXR 10 band EQ floor pedal a couple years later. With those two gadgets I could get close enough to any profession sounds.

I think I had that AKAI Reel to Reel ... or an AKAI close to it. It was at the heart of what I used to figure out the guitar parts in songs.
A combination of Boss HM-2 through an Ibanez tube screamer to create a super overdrive tone like Fripp with lots of sustain. That changed my tone and playing.

Around the same time we used a Melos echo chamber and then our audio guy bought a Roland Chorus Echo.
Was really expecting a looper pedal in there… but ha, great selections!!!

Before I watched the video I wondered if it would feature a baritone. I must say I’m often reaching for my baritone now as my guitar of choice when I’m putting together my worship sets. The lower range makes a lot of songs easier to sing too… win/win.

I'm from Argentina and it's been very inspiring to meet you and your work since I reconnected with guitar last year after having dropped it for 20y out of "creative frustration"... now I have a small daughter and family and not so easy about finding time and energy, I think you know about it... but anyway all is inspiration! Here's a brief question, although gosh I'd love to have a chat with you about your work and advice, but probably unlikely ;) -- question: I find that I still need further resources and education in musical knowledge, meaning chords, theory, etc and how to apply it to creative work in the guitar, but I also love to explore effects and experiment with ambient composition... would you say that the 1st aspect I mentioned is critical in this path? It's hard to find the balance of time for these aspects. Thanks again! Best wishes to you!

I had a feeling that UD Stomp would get on the list. I can’t say that I’ve had an effect that was a must have. I did have a Carvin preamp rack and a Digitech multieffect rack plugged into a Peavey back in the early 90s that I really got a great tone out of. But all of it broke eventually. My new gear is still being explored so I can’t say I have a favorite for it yet.
I do want to say that the headless Ichita Nito signature guitar had become my favorite guitar of all for the past year now. I love the feel of it, the wide fretboard and the light weight. I never thought I’d like 10 gauge strings but turns out they’re amazing lol

Life changing gear ..
Yamaha classicals .. had several since youth now have one higher end solid wood .. a thing of beauty.
Telecaster .. again several .. now just one modded mexi. with a great neck.
Looper pedal .. for a few years which taught me layering, how to solo, timing, etc etc .. now I don’t use them as what I loved about them was the thing that started driving me crazy. Ive gone beyond them.
Pedals .. not so much .. although there were endless strings of them for years bought and sold .. now just an hx stomp for tone shaping and some reverb… core tone type stuff.
Amps were endless also until finally the boss cubes.. finally amps that sounding great and didn’t weigh a ton ! Don’t have those anymore either. Now just fishman or flat response pa style.. or whatever’s available.
Finally, the real book and other songbook variations , even with its limitations, still provides endless hours of inspiration and discovery.
That’s it.

Surprised not to see the DittoX4 here, Bill. The quintessential Frippertronics in a pedal.
There's lots of stuff I wish I still had...but how much of that is just because I no longer have it! Including WEM Copicat, Colorsound wah-fuzz-swell pedal, Aria rack mount digital delay, Vox AC30 with tremolo and top boost, Gibson SG with P90s, Japanese Fender Telecaster Thinline. BTW I like stacking modulations more than delays, cos you never know what tge end result will be. With the WEM, I loved poking the tension arm, that gave an amazing wobble that sounds like the coda on Roxy Music's For Your Pleasure. I don't know of any pedal than replicate that

Sansamp GT2 by Tech21. Suddenly I didn’t need to drag around an amp anymore!
The game-changer for me was my Fryette Power Station "Integrated Reactance Amplifier." I love tube amps, but I could never play them at proper (loud) volume for the best tones. Now I can. It goes between the amp and the speakers. There are subtleties I won't get into. It has nice tone-shaping options and its own effects loop, which is great for amps that don't have one, or that don't have reverb of their own. Nowadays I get mid vol. to cranked tones at whatever volume I like, and the speakers respond as if nothing's in between. Years ago I sold some heavy, LOUD vintage amps that I wish I'd kept to play through the Fryette. I would no longer have to leave their volume knobs below 1 to practice!

Strandberg guitars. For me the feel, sound, playability, even portability because they’re so easy to carry around. I first bought a Boden classic 6 and after playing that a few months I had to get a Boden 8 with the Fishman fluence pickups to cover heavier stuff. I’ve amassed a bunch of guitars over the years from all major brands, signature models of a lot of my heroes etc. trying to find what I liked and what works best for me. After playing guitar for almost 30 years now, I really think the search might actually be over. I haven’t even touched my other electrics, and I don’t know if I could ever go back to a more "normal” guitar now. I might wind up selling everything else to fund buying a Strandberg Salen classic (the butterscotch tele version) for more blues/country stuff and a Salen jazz to cover all my genres.
For me it was black eyeliner, tight shark skin pants, nady wireless, Boss CE3 on my Fender Precision Bass. I've yet to plug my Carvin Holdsworth into a Yamaha UD Stomp into my Big Sky. That is the Holiest of all grails (after Monty Python of course).

As for life-changing gear, I think the Neunaber Wet Reverb was a huge one for me. It really opened the gates for my own dive into ambient guitar. The Immerse Mk. II brought that further.

The Heritage h127 & Peavey Profex 2, the only ones staying!
Probably splitting the guitar signal into different paths, doing something radically different on each path, then blending it back together in the mix. One path is the traditional signal chain, pedals, amp, mic’d up cab. Other path is something weird that would sound not so good on its own. Like your phone’s built in mic into GarageBand and use the megaphone effect for distortion. Or running it through a eurorack with wavefolders and analog filters. The latter would sound great on its own with an already captured guitar recording, but when it’s just the raw signal straight out of the guitar it’s gnarly as hell but you probably wouldn’t want to use it standalone. But if you blend it with a “good” traditional signal path then it sounds interesting.
When I first got the guitar with a vibrato unit it changed my life. It was a Jaguar, so vibrato was smooth and no very wide, but it gives those magic sounds I always wanted. Then I got a guitar with two point unit that can bring pitch up or down really far away and it's awesome! Using it all the time. Light vibrato, huge vibrato, anti-bending, sound effects - all the time.
The next thing is Ebow (not original, so no harmonics and less power). Using it very often, it makes me think of a melody horizontal way. It hs some limitations, so here comes next thing. ;)
After I build the first guitar DIY sustainer (it uses transducer on headstock, works bad, but the feel... mmm...) I REALLY want another guitar with built-in good sustainer, this time electromagnetic (like Sustainiac). It can be used instead of Ebow but with no limitations: you can play with pick, fingers, use vibrato arm, play with left hand only, use more than one voice (in some cases)... what a dream! I hope to get it this fall. It will be a mod project, so I'm gonna experiment with installing it in bridge or neck position to find out what I like most.
Oh, I forgot to mention whammy pedal. It is great to get sky-high notes by playing harmonics and pitching them two octaves higher, but I must warn: it may cause addiction. )
I feel like this is probably a fairly noobie answer but my Walrus Slo was the piece I was missing to unlock all the ambient stuff that was swirling around in my head. Combined with a volume pedal and the mix on 100% wet, it just sings.
There are no "noobie" answers, as we all have our own unique experiences as musicians. Also, the Walrus Audio Slo is a great pedal!! :-)
Bill , if i took a magnet and glued it inside a plastic container so one side was showing on the bottom do you think it would work ? I am getting red lights inside me to just use a magnet that might be dangerous i don't know , what do You know ? 😁🎸✌
Shoot - I miss my 8-Track Reel-to-reel (TEAC 80-8 with dbx Epander). Heck, I miss my Vestafire 4-track cassette recorder....
I always wanted an 80-8, but the best we could afford was a 3440!
I still have that original chrome Morley volume pedal - which also has a boost. A true optical pedal with a rather large bulb that you can swap out. And I have my original UD Stomp in mint condition. I actually have all the original stomps including the DG and the AG. I went with the Alvarez Yari baritone years ago. Wait a minute - I also have the original EBow! And I used to play around with tape echo... Brothers from a different mother.😂
I too have the DG-Stomp, along with 2 Magicstomps. Got them all within a couple of years of getting the UD.

the UD Stomp is the king of delays. absolute beast of a unit. one of my "wish i'd never sold it" bits of gear. they go for silly money these days.
Hey Simeon - they are great units. I wish a company would create a modern version with similar features. In the meantime (if you have not seen it), you can nail all the UD sounds for free in software with the Chow Matrix. I was even able to take the UD-Stomp watchlist document and recreate a few of the AH presets.
@@chordsoforion i recreated my favourite ones in the axe fx, way back when i was using an ultra. two multidelays in parallel will let you do the AH ones easily. it's a shame yamaha keep making really cool bits of gear and then discontinuing them!

I did grab some random pedals for the intro, as I did not want to giveaway the 5 too soon. That being said, I use the X4 frequently. Definitely my favorite of the loopers pedals I have.

I have a love-hate relationship with the eBow. I've owned 3 of them (which should tell you how much I love them), and I've easily destroyed 3 of them (which is why I hate them). Amazing sound! Not built solidly enough for $100 a pop.

Getting my first envelope follower was a huge leap forward to me. Having one in the chain applying a subtle effect really gave my right hand dynamics a huge voice. Most people demo these and get extreme shifts and quacky garbage, but just a tiny, tiny bit of it brings any guitar tone to life and adds huge amounts of extra expression.
