- A quick filler video while I get the Seven Deadly Sins together. In this video, I talk a bit about the rules of the newest Digimon card game out of Japan (I can read Japanese with Furigana, so I can tell what the cards do).
Comment below on what sort of deck breakdowns you might want on any of these.

The story behind the Angemon (and Devimon) having the same name. They were trying to eliminate religious references in America in order to not offend Christians. When they got to Angemon and Devimon, they couldn't find a way around it. They were an angel and a devil, so they just rolled the dice and left it at was and waited for the complaints to roll in. Never happened.
One thing that is also neat about those two is that their canon lines or logical since it was never shown that Devimon digivolves into Myotismon.
@@TheForeverRanger while it was never shown, Devimon's line either leads to Vamdemon (Myotismon) or Skull Satamon (or even Lady Devimon). The reason Digimon mostly don't have a single evolution line is that their evolution is dependent on attributes. One example is Bakemon. While most become Phantomon, one that may be particularly intelligent may become Vamdemon instead.
In speaking of name changes, Vamdemon's (which is derived from the English words Vampire and Demon) name change makes no sense as Myotis is Latin for a Genus of bats...and not even vampire bats!
Digivolutions have never had pretensions of following a natural being's life cycle like Pokemon, they just go wherever they may with a rough thematic underlining. There are some much weirder examples, like a Digimon evolving into an egg, a machine evolving into a living creature, a goblin turning into a teddy bear or just straight evolving into pixel art.

Gatomon's probably the weirdest 'canon' line because it's a dog that turns into a cat, who is a champion, and then it becomes an angel woman and then a Dragon. But digivolutions often just follow whatever atribute if there's not a canon line. Like any bug is probably going to turn into Okuwamon or Mega kabuterimon because they're the Bug ultimates, but they can also become Piximon because it's still in the Nature attribute. And sometimes you get weird cases where the attribute or type will just completely change on a whim, like with Dark Evolutions.
I feel like Digimon World 2 did a weirdly good way of showing this because, sure, if you have enough evolution points then you're getting the canon line because that's the thing you'd expect out of a top-tier version. Or you could just evolve Biyomon and have it turn from a bird into a snake dragon because flying type.
Digimon are also data so weird ones make sense in that context. As long as the program is allowed to do (in this case Digivolve) a certain thing, then it can. I remember going down the rabbit hole on a number of sites getting the weirdest line I could.
Most people don't care, I think Angewomon "canoncically" digivolving to Magnadramon strikes a sour spot specifically, because people want to lewd Angewomon, and it turning into Magnadramon forces people to think about things that make them angry.
Nevermind the fact that Digimon are unsexed anyways, and there's absolutely nothing stopping an Angewomon from being "male", thus the entire point of strife is moot, but I don't think the people upset that their waifu turned into Falcor have thought about it that much anyways.
The idea behind digivolutions is that the base mon gathers different and often times unrelated data as it ages, and so, it digivolves into something different.
That aspect is more flashed out in the Tamers series.
16:19 that’s actually a Digivolution route option in some games. Furthermore I think that the multiple evolution routes makes a lot of sense for digimon as Digivolution is the accumulation of data and then converts that data to something new to take on a new form.
Digimon world games do that, where different digimon can digivolve into branching digivolutions based on what different data they collect, so a branching evolution system isn't all that of a stupid system. Kind of like pokemon one but cranked up to 11

Even the anime which tends to stick to characters having rigid routes has characters going through different routes, whether it be the various methods in 02, the ever popular dark digivolutions, or even re-uses of old Digimon like agumon in savers/datasquad.

The website says that the MSRP for these are supposed to be roughly $5 each! That's super reasonable given the packaging.
I assure you, you won't find any of these for 5 dollars. 15 dollars if you're lucky, but mostly you'll be seeing 20-25.

I find it slightly amusing that he starts explaining about the cards and not how to win, when in his rulebook video he talks about how the first thing you should talk about when explaining the game is how to win.

Just wanted to say since I've played the game some, moreso in case anyone looking at the comments wants more information i guess
-the Memory Gauge actually kinda works out fairly well in my experience, the constant turn switching helps make it feel like its anyones game especially when its possible to play almost any card for a comeback if you're willing to accept the consequences.
-I would recommend moving the Digitama to its own space and not on the deck since you evolve by placing cards on top of it, so it'd get weird and clunky if you leave it on the top of the deck I think.
-Blue is generally considered fairly strong but its more for draw and memory manipulation as i see more than its destruction of evo sources, though also some strategies dont even care if they have evo sources so yknow
-The game currently has Red, Blue, Yellow and Green as of the first set. Technically ONE white card as well. Black and Purple are confirmed to be coming in set 2.
-and yes Color mixing is possible except you also have to know you cannot play an Option card from the hand unless you have a Tamer or Digimon of the same color on the field.
-i think you overexaggerate how confusing inheritable/non-inheritable abilities are cuz most of the community basically has no problem with it and new players seem to latch onto it super fast, it also helps when translating the actual cards since the card text makes it CLEAR what the inheritable evolution source effect actually is

I remember Digimon tamers incorporated the cardgame into the show, then I think they just kind of dropped it after the first 20 episodes.
I believe the creator said he was forced to add the card game into the show, so I gusse they stopped caring the later the show went on. It sad they dropped it gave the Human partners have something to do other then just giving a encouragement, at less we talking about Marcus who a chad and punches digimon in the face.
@@jiabryant533 He was. They wanted Tamer to tie it into the marketing. Hence why Henry got Terriermon from the videogames and Rika was a queen at the card game. Personally I'm just glad that the show was as good as it was because that kind of corporate mandate could have gone soooo wrong so easily
They wanted to use the wild success of the card game to market Tamers. It didn't work- the card game was incredibly popular in the only market that mattered until it was murdered, while Tamers started putting nails into the coffin of Digimon anime that finally got finished by the Frontier movie bombing.

English Digimon announced for January 2021, with early release this November. Starters are $10 MSRP.
That’s still super reasonable. Thinking about ordering the starter decks and some Final Fantasy TCG to have some non-magic if possible.
Had to pay 20 each for mine but they each came with a booster pack and managed to make my money back with a lucky pull

I really hope this game takes off a bit or at least gets a good english release. I effing love Digimon and I'd really dig having a lot of variety in a weird system like this that gives you this much potential creativity with things.

Well, considering that in Hacker's Memory you have 18 different paths to get to Knightmon from 4 of the 5 training 1 digimon, your not wrong. Yes, I actually took the time to work backwards from knightmon to training 1 so I could have an army of knightmon each with a different path.
@@Ninja_Geek Doing God’s work. I actually really like the fact that basically the data that makes up a Digimon can then be manipulated to become almost anything else you want. It just makes it easier (sometimes) to collect the mons you want, or at least try a different path. It’s more like Classes on an RPG character in my mind.

Yeah, inherited abilities are neat and if you design for it, it’s not as broken hopefully. It’s apparently somewhat like the XYZ stuff from YuGiOh, too.

I feel like Yu-Gi-Oh has found a happy medium when it comes to box size. For most of it's products anyway. For some reason Konami saw fit to charge £15 for a half-empty box this year.
the heavily borrows from duel master and mtg color theory, in the light deck and white deck of both duel master and mtg you either go wide or in dM super anthem effects, red is just red, aggro plane and simple, but remember blue for duel master it heavily focused on returning a creature to your deck and while it wasn't very strong it was able to "control" the board state at time.
Digimon also has Green, Purple, & Black.

The first Digimon Digi Battle cards were edited by Upper Deck, and they had some sort of falling out with Bandai who then went on and edited the tcg themselves. That's why the rules are the same between series 2 and series 3, but the aesthetics are different ; Bandai were looking for a new visual identity, not a full on reboot of the mechanics. Series 3 started being edited under Upper Deck in the OG Digi Battle style in Europe, namely in France. Which is why you'll find French only series 3 Digi Battle cards with the cool old school artwork, as well as the exact same cards in that arguably uglier CGI aesthetics in English and other languages.
Okay, that security attack mechanic is actually really cool because it's basically incorporating a mechanic from the show where if a tamer is in danger then it prompts their Digimon to digivolve, but first evolutions achieved like this always either die or turn back almost immediately. So it's like your Digimon is forcing an evolution to Champion, Ultimate, Mega, whatever to protect you and if they pull it off then they just barely stop the threat from dealing another point of damage. I actually kind-of wish I knew some people who could play this because it seems really cool and I dig all the weird turnabout mechanics that force you to keep experimenting with different evolution chains.
Hopefully there’s a Discord-style community where people can jump into matches and play over web cam at least, since I doubt there’ll be a digital version. Was really hoping that with Bandai Namco releasing Zenonzard, we’d see a digital Digimon game too.
@@johnbuscher Turns out, there actually is. If you get Tabletop Simulator then there's a free fan plugin you can find for the card game that lets you import decks you make from digimoncard.dev/ . And on the page is also a link to a Discord with other people who play the game through Tabletop Simulator (TTS).
This might seem like a lot, but it totally works. You just have to buy TTS from Steam, find the Digimon 2020 TCG add-on, import a deck by copy/pasting a code from the site I linked (make sure to import while the notebook is still on the code page), and then you can save the deck as an object and find some matches. It is worth noting that not all cards are set up with the TTS plugin right now, like they're not at the new starter deck cards or beyond, but that's still pretty far and there is a method to screenshot cards and get them into the game. You'll just need to hit alt to zoom in on them to read the effects as opposed to having them show up when you mouse over the cards.
Hope this explained everything pretty well! I've been using this setup for a bit now and this game's pretty crazy.

You forgot about the D-Tector card game which is the Frontier one not that one you showed. Also I can only assume the 2nd one tried to make itself appear to be a different card game since the 1st one had failed already. And maybe that's why they kept releasing English exclusive card games afterwards, must have thought since we weren't buying those we must want a different type of card game or something.
The card rarity is on the cards next to the card number. So despite them all essentially all being commons, the decks have Uncommon, Rare, & Super Rare cards.
14:34 there is green for the plant and insect digimon. There is currently a white card omegamon (omnimon) and there are rumors of black/purple cards for machine and dark digimon.

Okay, that makes a lot of sense. So we have Fire, Water, Light, Nature, Machine, Dark, and Neutral for probably special circumstances like fusions or other weird situations. I think the only type we're missing is Filth, but I'd imagine that might be folded into one category or another. Maybe Numemon would be Black or something since I feel like Filth types are more associated with Macines, like how Machinedramon used a lot of Numemon as slaves.
The 2nd booster did introduce the new colors, but it also threw the color types out the window. There's now a yellow Agumon, that includes the GeoGreymon evolutionary line, a black Agumon that evolves the normal evolutionary line, & a purple Gabumon with it's regular evolutionary line. There's also green Tyranomon, MetalTyranomon, & RustTyranomon. Though I guess that promo Veedramon already kind of did it being a blue card, but that was just one card. Oh yeah, the Veedramon evolution line is blue, along with Veemon. Forgot about the green Agumon, I guess to go with the green Tyranomon.

The original Digimon card game's card size was actually slightly different from a standard card size. They are just as wide as a MTG card, but slightly taller.
Are deck boxes larger in America? I remember MTG having decks which basically contained 60 cards and a small leaflet and weren't any larger than that. That was around eighth edition though.
Yeah, MtG's boxes are pretty big now, relative to boxes back then. There's a big plastic tray that holds the cards.

I'm just waiting for them to announce Mastemon before I get too invested. There are already yellow and purple cards that gain effects of you have the other color on board, such as gatomon and wizardmon from ultimate power, so here's hoping she comes out soon.

I remember getting the very first Digimon card game here in Germany, probably 20 years ago. I think it was a starter deck and some boosters? I'm not sure. I went back to that shop a couple of weeks later and the game was already discontinued. Nobody I knew had interest in it, everyone preferred Pokémon.
If this new game will be available in Germany, I'll maybe get two decks, just for nostalgia reasons and maybe I can even find someone to play with.

Those first two were very muvh the exact same game, they just commited Sin #0 and changed the back art for no reason. They're completely compatible and as long as you use sleeves mixing them is A Okay.

It's 2020. To any big companies out there, please stop worrying that you're going to offend moral guardians and get complaints. GTA, D&D, and many other things have shown that all it does is get you free publicity. And for something as tame as simply including religious terminology like the words angel or devil or holy, it strikes me as really absurd. I get not wanting to lose sales, but those kinds of hyper-religious pearl-clutching moral guardians weren't going to buy your product anyway. Stand your ground.

Have you ever considered NOT spending so long agonising over pointless bullshit like packaging?
Nobody, regardless of location, language or culture, cares about what cards are packed in when it's in-hand and they can simply rip the fucker open.
The "Any sort of digimon can digivolve into a digimon of the next higher level as long as they're the some color" reminds me of the Digimon PS1 Card Game, which had a similar rule, with the four tribes in that being Black,Red, Blue, and Yellow. Something wacky I'd like to see transferred from that game is the Digivolution Cards, which are option cards specifically meant to bypass some of the digivoution restrictions. They were bricky but could allow for some crazy builds, like the Ultimate Armor Turbo I made, which had three rookies in the entire deck and was built around using the niche "Armor Crush Digivolution" to turbo out high powered Ultimate Digimon either second or third turn.
Honestly the Digimon Digital Card Battle PS1 Game was fun, slow as hell, as the game only slowly spoon fed you cards 3 at a time, making grinding for any sort of decent library a huge chore. But the game had a few neat features. Like allowing you to mulligan your hand any number of times you want at the start of any turn, but you must discard your current hand to do so (and getting cards out of the graveyard/discard pile was difficult). And the rock, paper, scissors, combat which forced you to make a read on which attack your opponent picks for some major potential upsets. And you could 'hail mary' the top card of your deck into you option zone as a last resort if nothing in your hand can help.
I want the Monster Rancher card game to come back. I played that on PS1 like the Digimon card game too.
The deck only coast 550 yen which is about 5 dollars.
I think out of the first set Green and Blue are the two best colors. But out of the starter decks it might be blue.
Though yellow is good from the starter decks
Blue has the worst starter deck from what I’ve seen, but set one allows blue to construct probably the best decks.
Haos magna Ingram I think blue and yellow have the best starter decks but is definitely my opinion, but your right about blue really getting the spotlight in new evolution.
Obsidian Roost every game I saw of just starter decks (however some of these matches were the app starter decks which were incomplete so that definitely plays a factor), blue always had the hardest time and lost the most. Maybe it could come down to piloting poorly, but I’m just saying what I observed.

So far two booster sets have come out for it and a third one was already confirmed. I hope It doesn't fall into the 2 year curse cuz I'm playing this game on Tabletop Simulator with my brothers and we all love it. So I hope we see more of this game and have an American release
@@ricardonunez9360 Hello from 2024! We are now 16 regular sets into the game with 6 smaller extra sets and something like 15 starter decks. Soon the English and Japanese releases will happen simultaneously. The game is great and more people should play it!

I actually like the idea of tiny reusable deck boxes. I remember MtG used to sell decks in something of that size as well (at least during the Mirrodin-Kamigawa era, probably quite a long time before that too) and I always enjoyed seeing store shelves behind the counter with lots of small colourful boxes neatly stacked.
Modern deck boxes are showy for sure but they're such a waste of space and cardboard that you instantly throw away. I really don't like 'em all that much.
Anyway, this seems like something I'd like to try if an English release rolls around. Get a few decks, try it out, probably just a fun thing to play for a few rounds.

Try reviewing Yu-gi-oh Rush Duel. It's card design is more pleasing to the eye than that of traditional Yu-gi-oh.
Cool idea but the design thing is debatable.
I assume there'd be nine colours because there are (usually) nine types in digimon; wind, electric, earth, fire, water, plant, light, dark, neutral. How does the game deal with attributes (virus, vaccine, data, free)?
I like how all the changes you'd apply to the packaging are based on how negatively different the US and Japan are culturally.

Crystal Clans uses a very similar resource system. I think it makes more sense in Crystal Clans given the win condition of that game.

I think the reason Digimon evolutionary paths go so weird, is that the original virtual pets could evolve in so many ways depending on how well it was taken care of.
Interestingly, the baby one level (literally just hatched) Digimon that can evolve into angemon could also evolve into devimon.
The separation of abilities and inherited abilities is interesting. I guess it prevents overpowered ability mixing that might occur if they just had a single ability box. Still kinda weird that a lot of cards are vanilla cards until you can evolve them and get access to their inherited abilities, which are really less "inherited" abilities and more unlocked-after-you-evolve-this abilities.
