It's the sliced beetroot and the pineapple that gives you that refreshing taste you're talking about. Makes the burger much juicier. If there's one more thing you could add and that would be finely grated fresh carrot. Also to change it up a little, use thick sliced fresh bread, take out the egg and beef patty and use a nice portion of crumbed fish. No added herbs and spices to the fish, fairly plain and just standard crumbs.
You'll go into a food coma.

Friends if you want to add egg and pineapple then you have to have bacon as well. A standard corner shop Aussie burger is beef, lettuce, tomato, tomato sauce/ketchup, and beetroot maybe. Then you change it up by adding as your choice , cheese, bacon, egg, pineapple. Or all at once for the mega burger which if you can eat two with everything you will be lucky.

You nailed it with the Beet Root, the pineapple and the fried egg. You guys are spot on about the fact that it is a flavour combination that makes it so great. I also like the 'fresh' description as no other burger I've ever had, gives you that 'fresh' taste. The only more Ozzie thing you could have done was use BBQ sauce, instead of tomato sauce and the patties should be slow cooked on a flame-grilled BBQ. BTW, once you pick it up, never put it down, because they DO fall apart! LOL
I reckon I'd give you guys a solid 8:10. Excellent for your first time. Now you'll be forever looking for that same burger in the shops!

Here in the land down under, we schred the lettuce it goes on bun first, then the tomato, beetroot, pineapple, egg, meet patty, fried onion & your choice of tomato sauce, bbq sauce or sweet chilli sauce then the top of the bun, & the bacon if desired can go before the egg, between the egg & meet patty or on top of the patty before the onion. But for a first attempt you did well 😊

In Australia, we use beetroot in the same way as Americans use pickle. It serves the same purpose of giving the burger a touch of tangy sourness. The most basic Australian burger consists of a homemade burger patty, fried onion, cheese (melted onto the bun), lettuce and tomato. Tomato is a must. For sauce, either Tomato or Barbeque is acceptable. This combo would make a good kid-sized burger. Everything else is extra and no, you shouldn't be able to get your mouth around a 'Works' burger🤣.🍔

For the first time in several years my husband bought home an Aussie Burger for each of us for lunch today from Hungry Jacks (Burger King). No pineapple but meat patty, egg and bacon, lettuce, raw onion tomato, beetroot slices (edited because I forgot that), tomato sauce and cheese. Yummo. That was nearly 8 hours ago and neither of us are hungry for dinner, might give it a miss and have some Camembert cheese and cracker. 10 would be the addition of golden, crispy, crunchy chips (fries)

Out of interest, to the AUS/US fusion folks, if you can answer? Aus beetroot slices in tins have a 'lil acetic acid/vinegar in them. Gives them a slight pickled flavour. I've googled the ingredients on those Libby's one, it's not declared on the can. Do American beetroot slices taste like Aus Beetroot slices? I suspect they taste differently. Aus Beetroot slices in a burger hint at a BBQ sauce flavour- vinegary, sweet, savoury.

Big thing on the bun - got to be real fresh, soaking the liquids and once you start, two-handed, it aint put down till done eating.... OMG you went with the whole hog (not literally, its another weird Aussie ism). I would forget the pineapple unless youre a Queenslander. Yes to the beetroot, sliced tomato, lettuce(fresh), onion (cooked) beef pattie, if extra hungry go some bacon and an egg(I'm too old now, it's just too much, in my 20s I would inhale them), but super important is some Fountain tomato sauce. The importance of the sauce cannot be underestimated.

Toast the bun and butter it.
    Meat in the pan
    Bacon in the pan
    Onions in the pan
    Pineapple in the pan
When onions are almost done break the egg on them (it holds the onions together.)
Flip the meat and stack each item as it cooks on top of the meat pattie to keep warm.
On bun bottom lettuce tomato beetroot then your fried stack.
    Slice of cheese on that.
Sauce on top bun then put on top.

When I lived in China one of my mates Matt was the chef at the Holiday Inn steak restaurant. A mate and I went for dinner and Matt cooked Australian style hamburgers for us. A couple of Americans saw what we got and came over and asked where it was on the menu. We explained the situation and Matt came out and agreed that he would cook them for the two Americans the next day (they had already ordered from the menu). the feedback was entirely positive.

I just wanted to express how happy this video made me. I really enjoyed watching you and your family try your own variation on the classic Aussie style burger. the point of this burger is that every Aussie has their own preferred variation, some with bacon and some with out but always with the beet root and whatever vegetables that one prefers. I adored the end and was also happy with the kid exploring new tastes. Thank you for a great video and I am so glad you enjoyed your burgers.

Sauce is a personal preference in terms of bbq or tomato, mine is smokey bbq. Little tips to reduce the height of the burger so you can actually eat it without dislocating your jaw is one ring of pineapple, instead of the two you had. Also, having fried egg without using the ring, makes it lower. It will overhang the sides a bit, but that's not really a problem. And bacon. Definitely needs bacon. Australians use a slightly different cut of meat for our bacon, with a video below showing the difference. For burgers, we tend to use what we call "short cut" bacon, which is basically the "middle rasher" as shown in the video linked below, with the tail cut away. The middle rasher has much less fat and it's delicious.
The best burgers in Australia are wider than they are tall. They get special buns that are thinner than most burger buns, but have a bigger diameter. Then all the fillings are made thinner. You get the same amount of fillings as normal, but they're spread to cover a wider bun, all so you can actually bite into it without having to squeeze it down to fit into your mouth, fillings going everywhere.
You guys did a great job with this simple, yet incredibly satisfying Aussie classic, and the kids were adorable.

When an old-style burger shop cooks them, the cheese tops the meat and the egg tops the cheese. Salad stuff upside down on the "top" bun, add sauce and put it together 😊
