As a South African I have to resist the urge to type a thesis about this case, so I'll just thank you for always being so objective. I usually tell prospective visitors, "Come to South Africa! Yes you might get bitten by a Great White shark, but you are much more likely to get stabbed in the parking lot".

As a British immigrant living years in beautiful South Africa, a few points: 1. South Africa has a terrible reputation in the UK, if a Brit was looking for somewhere to kill someone it would be an easy/lazy choice - you know the press will back you; 2. SA is not like much of Europe/USA ,you do not simply stumble upon the 'bad' bits of town, it is blindingly obvious if you are heading the 'wrong' way; 3. contrary to Dr Grande's opinion SA criminal's have no issue just killing you to rob you -its not like the 'west', no-one is pushed out the car, if they have a gun you get shot first, robbed after. If you're pushed out the car its because you paid for that privilege.

I have been carjacked 2ce and hijacked once, the hijackers had guns every time. There's nothing like the feel of cold metal on your forehead to make you focus on surviving for one more second and complying with everything they want.

Well said. My Auntie lived in Johannesburg for years and we visited many times. I couldn't have said it better myself. It is blindingly obvious where the "dodgy" areas are and thieves really don't give 2 fucks about killing you. There's no way in hell they would have let Shrien out of that car, he's a witness and they wouldn't have let him go so he could point them out to police! They are beyond ruthless and it's not personal, it's about money and self preservation. The probability that Shrien was involved is so high it's just that the police made a cock up of everything and are as corrupt as hell.

My aunt owned a casino in Johannesburg in the 80s and early 90s and was a millionaire so we stayed in the rich parts with her. I'm no millionaire though, lol. Not by a long shot!
The video of the money exchange in the hotel room convinced me that he is indeed guilty.
Yes indeed, agree with you one hundred percent, but in a court of law hard evidence was needed to convict the perpetrator, and sadly the prosecution could not produce any - hence, he was free to go.

I doubt any murderer is stupid enough to pay the contract killer money in public. It however is much more likely that the husband believes the driver to also be the victim of the crime and paid what he promised - R 1000 to drop them at the hotel.
This is a wild story and it's hard to believe that Shrien is innocent.

The consensus in the UK seems to be that the husband was as guilty as hell - at the very least it would be interesting to know what was in that envelope he handed to the taxi driver after his wife's murder.
Probably because they are not used to life in third world countries. This scheme is very common. Tourist get kidnapped all the time and it usually involves a taxi driver who heard them speak english in the car.
I think he claimed it was money for the taxi and tour guide services.

I remembered when this case first broke .!! The fact was he was Gay and only wanted a wedding to please his family is very very sad .! But he deserves an Oscar for trying to convince the court that he was insane as not to be extradited to South Africa to stand trail
He never claimed he was insane. He claimed he had PTSD. Two completely different things.
I feel for Anni - even if Shrien had nothing to do with it, he seems so grossly negligent in his behavior.

I recall this case. The gun was found in the van, they fought frequently and the husband met multiple times with the driver. He said his wife wanted to see the dodgy areas even though her friends and family said she would never suggest such a thing. The gunshot wound was consistent with a purpose for killing her. Everyone investigating the crime is sure the husband did it.
That's what I said in my comment, too. I don't believe for a second that either one of them would want to see the "dodgy" parts of town.

Hard to feel bad when she went for such shallow traits. Being rich doesn't make you trustworthy and being from the same culture won't guarantee your safety. I feel bad for her but she also knew he was closeted.

That’s how I remember it from the time, he was hanging out at gay bars and was presumed guilty but his money saved him from prosecution.

I think it is very possible he was guilty. The marriage was a perfect cover for his traditional family. The murder was a way for him to save face and continue the life he truly desired and also kept him single for a long time due to his "fake" grief. He could have hid the ring in the cab to recover it later since the crime was staged.
And the money was his dad's so he had to please the dad by getting married.
What your saying contradicts itself because you said he got married to cover his sexuality From his traditional family but you then said he killed her to save face and live the life he truly desired. What life was that if he married her for cover wouldn’t he just have affairs behind her back. Why kill her then try and live the life you desired when that life is shined by his tradition

I am from Cape Town and followed this case like I follow you Dr Grande. Day to day. This guy had his wife killed. How he got away with this murder is one of our lowest moments in SA courts. Her family was devastated and SA police and justice system failed them miserably. Rip Anni your life was taken to cover your husbands double life.
Looks like he paid off more than just the taxi driver.
If you followed this case everyday - how did the driver's and all his co-conspirator's flip flops not raise your eyebrow? They were not paid the full money as discussed...so why did they initially only implicate themselves for armed robbery, kidnapping and murder of Anni, but changed testimony only after they consulted each other?
This case makes me soooooo angry!!!! I come from a very religious family and coming out as Gay was one of the hardest things I ever had to do but never in a million years would I enter a sham marriage to cover it up much less murder the poor girl. What a MONSTER!!! God Bless her poor family.
I have a neighbor that is in the closet he hasn't come out hes in his sixties we live in the South so it makes it even harder for him to come out. It saddens me to see him this way because I know hes living in his own hell. 40 years ago I knew someone who was gay he killed himself because his family disowned him because of their believes I am saddened about it to this day he was in his 20s. I congratulate you for coming out. You are who you are live who you are don't let others stop you from being you.

I still remember this case so vividly, and couldn't understand why the husband would take her to Nyanga of all places (yes, that is one of the most dangerous places in the country). I am from Cape Town and two things struck me as strange, The husband travelled to Cape Town to hire men to kill his wife, when he could easily just have divorced her? He did his best to avoid his time in court and by some miracle wasn't convicted. By the way, her killers did sexually assault her far as I can tell from the initial reports brother. Thank you for this, excellent program as usual.
Because in the Indian culture you cannot be gay. Having her killed would get the pressure off him about finding a suitable wife for a while.
In the Indian culture homosexuality and divorce are both looked down. Obviously it does happen occasionally but that’s not something well accepted by society. There is a great emphasis on preserving tradition and the expected roles in society.
Never mind sexual preference. Divorce doesn't exist in Indian culture. Marriage is forever.

There's no convincing me the husband wasn't guilty. I believe he felt being a widower was more palatable and made him look better than admitting he was gay. At best, his behaviour before and after the murder of his new wife was questionable, and he showed no sign of trauma. Even if he wasn't in love with her, surely the horror of the murder would have some emotional impact on him? He was only interested in himself. Guilty as, in my opinion.
Maybe he couldn't stand her and was relieved that she was dead and maybe he's a very selfish person... none of which means he arranged to have her killed.

I remember the case very well as I live in Cape Town. Shrien Dewani was acquitted because of bungling on the part of the police and the unreliability of the witnesses. We have a shockingly high crime rate in South Africa, and several notorious murders have taken place in the past decade, by intimate partners and family members, purporting to be the result of random carjacking, robbery, etc. It is not a stretch to believe that Dewani was likewise ridding himself of his wife with hired assistance, and keeping his double life secret.
Capetonian here, If you stay in the "tourist" areas you are going to be perfectly safe - they are well protected with private security and police. The outlying shantytowns known as "townships" are where things can get dodgy if you are a foreigner standing out.

I’ve heard this case I think from Casefile. He’s beyond guilty. I get that certain actions doesn’t default to guilt but his actions during and after the fact doesn’t ease suspicion.
You've probably been emotionally influenced by Casefile's melodramatic narration and music. Describing him as "beyond guilty" - a nonsensical term - reinforces that view.
@@Richard_Straker the narrator is hardly melodramatic. He’s as neutral sounding as I’ve ever heard to make you comatose. But even you can’t dispute that his actions around the entire affair gives off suspicion of him being involved somehow. Again, how someone acts after something like this doesn’t mean they’re guilty, but it doesn’t make him look innocent either.

1400 GBP is close to R30 000 (South African Rands). Taxi drivers in South Africa earn around R3500 per month. Owners of minibus taxis earn around R25000 per month, which is considered an above average income for a South African. To put it into perspective, you can buy a second hand car for R30 000 in South Africa and police officers earn around R10 000 per month in our country. Thus, R30 000 / 1400 GBP is considered a relatively large sum of money. We have heard about "murder for hire plots" in South Africa for +-R6000. So please, don't think that the money is too little for the deed that was commited. Criminals have done more for less in South Africa. It is also very obvious where the dangerous areas are. I doubt that they went there by mistake.
Sensible facts and figures.
This is one of those rare instances where Dr. Grande didn’t do his research. 1400 pounds may not buy you a hit man in Delaware, but it is more than enough to have someone murdered in South Africa (and quite a few other countries).
Sounds like he didn’t love, honor or cherish her one little bit. I don’t know if he’s guilty of murder but he’s definitely guilty of being an awful husband. I bet he would have fought harder to save his boyfriend.

I rarely disagree with you Dr Grande, but I do on this one. I've watched and read a lot about this case. It's reported that Anni wanted to see all of Cape Town, even the bad and seedy parts so Shrien got the taxi driver to take them to the bad parts of town. Do EITHER of these people, Anni or Shrien, seem like the types that would want to see anything on their honeymoon other than glitz, glamour and expensive pampering? Nope. Not buying it.
But why would they go to SA in the first place. Why not Monaco or Paris, if they wanted to see only the glitz? Sometimes - immature - rich people like to visit the "peasants" while waring rich cloths and accessories, because it makes them feel superior. Does that sound like annie?

@@janakakumara3836 I think that's an excellent point! Maybe because he knew it would be easier to pass off the "murdered by ruffians" plot in S.A. than say, Monaco. (I am not trying to say that crime only happens in S.A. It is an amazing place with a variety of neighborhoods.) But I think Shrien thought that it would be easier to pull off there than say, Monaco or Paris.

I love your views. I wouldn't find it shocking if the husband wasn't behind it. He feared she would out him. I married an Indian. The stories I've been told about the grooms and family killing brides. It's very sad. Also, why would he take her to such a dangerous place.

I am wondering if Dr. Grande had considered he might have had contact with the Taxi Driver before coming to South Africa.... I followed this case right from the beginning and I believe he is indeed Guilty
The taxi driver angle alone doesnt prove he was guilty unless the phone calls and texts are suspicious. Lots of tourists do hire one taxi driver for the whole day or week and arrange an itinerary prior to the trip. He might have gotten the contact details for the taxi driver from a friend or relative who visited south africa in the past.
Anni had INITIAL strong doubts about getting married.
If you have doubt …. there is no doubt.
I'm so sorry for Anni. I personally think that even if Shrien didn't explicitly paid anyone for the murder of Anni, all his irresponsible actions make him guilty of this outcome.
An important fact left out here: the texting between Shrien Dewani and the cab driver was shown to be taking place *WHILE ANNI WAS IN THE CAB ALIVE BESIDE HIM* - does that not change things significantly?! Why would he need to text the driver sitting right in the same car in front of them both? Let me guess.. he was planning another 'romantic surprise', right? God, I am so disappointed in how Dr Grande saw this case! I am (usually) a big fan :-(
As a South African, we sadly know many shot or stabbed for a cellphone or a couple of Rands. In this case, it's blindingly obvious what happened here, and Dewani literally got away with murder. It doesn't help that we have one of the most corrupt societies in the world, some of the police cannot read or write or drive, and are lazy to boot and life is cheap. Dockets lost or "lost", bribery is common, as is contamination of crime scenes. Trying to get the police to even open a docket for theft or domestic violence is a mission. This beautiful woman did not deserve the lack of justice she received.
Maybe she should have studied his character more than his bank balance. Her greed was her downfall.

While this just looks like a horrible accident, it's quite possible that the husband was referred to the taxi driver before he even got to South Africa, which is how and why he met with him so many times. It's easily for all this to have been arranged before they even stepped foot in South Africa. Indians aren't clueless about dangerous parts of towns and they're definitely aren't going to ask to be driven there for sightseeing, and I don't believe they would have pushed him out of the car and kept his wife. I know the world has become more dangerous, but '91, I traveled to Egypt and we hired a cab driver to be our tour guide for a number of days, he took us to many sites before the tourists got there and we paid off the guards to let us in, we even met some of the locals and hung out with them. Each evening we paid him in cash because these guys want their money, they're not going to wait a period of days to be paid when people could easily take off and leave them hanging. Anyway, he did what we paid him to do. The fact that the husband's story kept changing just like the others makes him suspect.

Every person I meet from South Africa tells me it is safe, you just have to stay away from the bad areas. When I ask if they have ever been a victim of a crime, they usually list a whole slew of offences - house break-ins, car thefts, carjackings, muggings, assault, and they often know people who have been victims of sexual assault or murder. Not an ideal place for a honeymoon.
I have lived in Durban S.A before. I was in my 20s and I am Canadian. As a white foreigner I had to learn quickly- no jewelry in public - no watches - no phones 📵- no purse - the hardest was keeping quiet 🤐 all the time in public.
I have a Canadian accent but most would think American in that area. That posed a large concern as some dislike Americans and/or they can view you as a potential hostage for cash from North America.
It was a wonderful experience living there in other ways! The people were friendly and kind.

Dear Dr G. A great analysis. It appears that its all about the headlines in South Africa. I couldn't live there. I visited in the early 1980 s and couldn't work out why folks weren't leaving. Its a pity - it is such a beautiful place. With scary amount of poverty and bad government. Pity that getting rid of apartheid hasn't really improved life for many.

2 days ago there was a march in honour of murdered estate agent Lindsay Buziak. She was killed while showing property to a potential client and her killer is yet to be found. I would really like to see your opinion on that case.

I have heard of South Africans visiting home being very aware of who follows you from the airport. Your luggage, passport are valuable to them. To be safe, don’t go straight home from the airport. Drive to a shopping mall first to make sure no one is following you, then head home. Sadly, these are things people do. It can already start as an inside job at the airport...going through customs...they know who has the goods ....call their contacts outside the airport with a description of your appearance, possessions you carry, your destination, address etc...their buddies are waiting follow you home.

I lived in Uganda at some point during the pandemic.

So a highly educated millionaire offers a side gig to a stranger in a foreign country to save a couple bucks for the vending machine.🤔 Being educated, they would have known not to go near townships. Let alone tour one. At night. With a young lady in the car. Wearing diamonds. Seems the more information you add to this concoction, the mangier it gets. I don’t quite understand how Shrien reached some of these decisions if he wasn’t involved. Not to mention, a violent township would be the perfect place to camouflage a murder, but you're right; we can only speculate as we will never know. Yet being in a car did not protect them. I'm sure they were aware, or should have been aware that car jacking are a fairly frequent form of crime in any major city anywhere in the world but esp South Africa and esp at night.
I have a friend who is from South Africa and she told me that her entire family, including relatives, migrated to New Zealand due to unsafe conditions in South Africa. It does appear to be a dangerous place.

Thank you, Dr, Grande for your analysis of the Anni Dewani case. I think that Shireen Dewani made a mistake when he hired a random taxi driver as a tour guide. South Africa has many accredited tour guides. An internet search would have put him in contact with a reputable professional who would never have recommended a nighttime tour of a dodgy township. According to Stats SA 15,8 million tourists visited South Africa in 2019 and not one of them died violently. South Africa is an incredible country to visit and as long as you listen to your tour guide you will have a wonderful holiday.

I'm curious I saw a documentary that explained there are road kidnappings 2x a week all across Africa. It is usually a kidnapping for money. Sometimes the person comes out dead even if ransom is paid. I would think this couple looking very rich were kidnapped with intention maybe to ransom the woman. By making contact with her husband later but she tried escape or posed a threat so they killed her. That or the husband was in corporation.
But was is a random driver when the driver worked for the hotel. He drove them outside of his work for the hotel but still was someone working in an official function there.
They sexually assaulted her and killed her. I would never go to South Africa, not to any country on that continent. I would like leave in a not dead state. 🇸🇪

I've heard this story so many times and, although the killers come across as liars who are not credible and the police seem as corrupt as hell, I can't help but get the feeling Shrien is somehow involved. Maybe it's because officers made such a cock up of the investigation and you never get a clear sense of what actually happened. I rarely disagree with Dr Grande, he tends to come to his conclusions in a reasonable, logical manner and examines the evidence fairly, but in this case I DO disagree. I wouldn't have convicted Shrien though, there's too much doubt and not enough valid evidence pointing to his guilt.
You’d be surprised that cops in most situations are right , corrupted or not. I think he chose South Africa to do her in, so he’ll have much better chances to get away with it. Not well planned, but it succeeded anyway.

For a western country with a constitution that talks about fair treatment, equality and freedom it's a joke. God help me if I'm ever accused of something there and the police think I did it. I live in SA. Her husband is gay. He ia living with a man right now. He had her murdered. I work on farm attacks and have gained some understanding as to how crime works in SA. Nobody in their right mind would go into a "location" unless it was on an organised tour where there would be some safety.

As a South African I applaud you for hitting the nail on the head. This is a hugely devisive case with most of South Africa wanting to believe Shrien was guilty. I work in the area the murder took place , and not one person on the the ground thought he was. All saw it as a naive couple who exposed there wealth to oppertunists. Thank you for you clear analisis
I think at best his version of events really did happen and he was happy as it got him out of the marriage. At worse, he got away with arranging her murder. But whatever the case he didn't love her and she deserved better. RIP Anni. Her poor family

As a South African I remember this case well. Initially I was convinced that he was guilty, but later I had my doubts. My main concern is the perverse incentives set up by the way plea bargains work in South Africa. Basically, if you can give the police a bigger fish then you can get a lighter sentence. There have been multiple cases where the perpetrators have concocted stories about "hits made to look like an unrelated crime" in order to lighten their sentences.
This makes me think of the Brett Kebble case. What a convoluted mess that was.

It's not that unusual to hire a taxi for a whole day of sight-seeing. My Mom and I did the same thing in London. We paid the driver a flat rate for the whole day and he acted as our tour guide to all the major sites.
@jaelzion A taxi in London and a taxi in South Africa are completely different things! The 'taxi' referred to in this story is a minibus-taxi used by commuters and definately not the London type you are thinking of. Most of these minibus taxis are kept on the road by sheer grace and greed.

It’s sad how things turned out for Ani but she had blinders on when selecting a husband. If she had looked for character first, not wealth, perhaps she would have found a more compatible husband.
Parents sometimes send these silent (and not so silent) signals to their daughters that they expect them to marry someone at least as well off financially as them or better yet, even wealthier than they are ... in other words, to "marry up". Maybe one should say, she should have stood up to her parents (and culture) better. Of course, one could say the same for the man (Shrien).

As to the outcome, I suspect that he had something to do with this but I agree with the judge that the police did not make a case. The police did a great job of explaining how he would have hypothetically had a motive and how potentially he could have been involved, but they did not have any other evidence. I understand why people were mad at the judge, but I think the judge ended up making the right decision.
And that stinks, because I don't think he is innocent.

Most shows like Dateline (or similar ones and others) have described this case with a bias towards finding that the husband was guilty but got away with murder. I've never been to SA but I know quite a bit about its history. I vividly remember some years ago a friend of mine here in the UK, an older hippie type woman, who visited some relatives there. When I asked what it was like I maybe expected some kind of enthusiasm about seeing a different culture, people or whatever. However what she did was just shake her head and say very little. It's was as if she'd seen a ghost. I'll never forget it.

As always Dr. Grande thank you for your analysis and humor. I see the comments inspired a great deal of discussion regarding countries, in some instances comparisons. While they are likely true experiences for those people it is but a sampling of the situation in each of the countries. Each place has pros, cons, and depending on our life circumstances we try to find where we feel our situation will be a good experience and usually cost savings for us. Many people move to places and then move back in 3-6 years, a visit is not the same as a permanent move. We don't learn much about the complex fabric of society on a visit. We are fortunate to live in a world where this sort of mobility is possible. We are fortunate to have the internet to research such things.
The judge who let Dewani off the hook was paid by his family.
I remember listening to the Redhanded podcast about this case a couple years ago and thinking the husband must have been guilty, but now I can't remember why. Oh well.

I saw another video on this case. I believe that they said that her husband probably did want her killed because she had money and so did her family! So he figured he would get her money after she died because he was her legal husband.
The other angle is the parents threatening to disinherit their son if he refused to marry or got divorced. His family was wealthier apparently. That doesnt prove he was guilty though.
I don't think this was about money.
