He's a smelly liberal doing the work of his god, satan. Utina is ludicrous liberal nonsense, plus he watches moe trash. Once in a blue moon do I actually find a good anime on this channel.
I love that you talk about shows outside the spotlight. There are other anime youtubers who I'll watch to see if anything promising is coming up on the radar, but I almost never go and watch those series because I don't watch that much TV anymore - I'll just have a laugh at the video and move on. Whereas your channel gives me a much better appreciation of which shows are too important to ignore and once or twice a year I'll come away from one of your videos, pick up a new series, and treasure it for years as one of the best of the best. Case in point Shin Sekai Yori, honorable mentions to A Place Further than the Universe and Scrapped Princess P.S. Now that you've talked about what a hidden gem is, I'd love to hear your opinion on which shows qualify / which are your favorites!
I very much appreciate you talking about shows from all different periods of time. I'm making it my mission to get EVERYTHING off my To-Watch list this year, and a lot of what's been put on there over the years are shows I heard about from you. I love hopping back and forth, not only between different genres, but also different eras of anime. I went from The Promised Neverland to Princess Tutu to Interviews With Monster Girls and I'm just about to head into Made in Abyss. Anime is awesome. And there's way too much good to be found within this medium to just stick with the new, trendy stuff or to only watch the "classics". As you say, "Watch more anime." I certainly will and I'm certainly enjoying myself!
I feel like it’s hard to have an anime from before the 90s that isn’t Akira or Ghibli as a hidden gem, because people just don’t watch anime from that period. Because Rose of Versailles is a classic and highly important in the Japanese anime/manga canon.
As many have said, I really appreciate you taking the time and effort to make these videos. Soo many lost gems out there to find and enjoy. So many characters to meet, stories to follow and endings to be sad about. Thanks. I distinctly remember enjoying this video A LOT when you made it. Not to mention it was really useful for finding good shows. Most of your videos do that though.
Proud to see you standing up for the anime you love! The current stuff is good to cover, but it doesn't replace who you are as a fan deep down & the series you truly love. This is how "multi generational" nerd culture nourishes itself: new ideas & old classics celebrated together
You have reviewed a lot of shows in the past that are hidden gems or close to e.g. mushishi, haibane renmei, shinsekai yori and I thank you for it. I look forward to your future videos on hidden gems and I hope it goes well.
Shinsekai Tori has over 200.000 votes and it's in top 150 popularity on MAL. It's nowhere near a hidden gem, it is super popular The same goes for Mushishi
When it came out, it had quite a hype around it, so I did eventually checked it out. ... And I personally found it bland, with the first few mysteries uninteresting. Then I realized that its a light novel adaptation, which (at least at the time, dunno about now) was still running, and the show did not adapted it fully. And that completly turned me off from it. (And heck I like mystery stuff, Knives out is my favorite recent non-Marvel movie, I've read the Umineko vns etc.) But you are also right that after the initial hype, noone seems to be talking about it anymore. ... So (and I repeat, it might just be me) from my point of view, it is indeed hidden, but it ain't no gem, just rock like any other.
Thank you for continuing to highlight older shows. I do not keep up with the current shows too much, so I much prefer hearing about a variety of different shows that have "proven the test of time", so to say.
Honestly I feel like any1 know about death parade it's not near my fav list tbh but I think it was great and I even cried in the end for some reason and the only anime that could I achive it before was something like I want to eat your pancreas Wich was very surprising to me
Off the top of my head, I can point to three shows that I would consider hidden gems, both adhering to and somewhat subverting the metrics laid out here: 1. Crest/Banner of the Stars (1999-2005) This series holds a very special place in my heart as it was the series that turned me from a mainstream anime fan to a connoisseur. Tuning into TechTV's Anime Unleashed block and being introduced to this opened my eyes to what the medium truly had to offer beyond the Toonami staples. I also consider it one of the best space opera anime ever made; maybe not as high as Legend of the Galactic Heroes or Gundam, but still a high ranking tale in its own right, with some thoroughly deep worldbuilding and compelling characters. A surprise survivor of the ADV sinking, rescued by Funimation it still had to wait several years for a rerelease, and even now it goes sadly unknown by all but a very few. 2. Hakumei & Mikochi (2018) A surprisingly recent title for such a distinction, but one that I feel has earned it for how little anyone, even your own good self, Ark, talks about it. Granted, Spring 2018 was perhaps one of the greatest seasons ever for Slice-of-Life anime and perhaps this title was simply overwhelmed by the likes of A Place Further Than The Universe and Yuru Camp. Perhaps it was lost as it was one of the first flagship titles for the then-new streaming service HiDive. But for whatever reason, I've rarely seen any mention of this title nowadays or even during its release, which is a shame as it is a wonderful feel-good chill-out series that deserves more attention. 3. Wandering Son (2011) In this current age of social upheaval, I'm genuinely surprised nobody is bringing up this work. The first series I watched when I started tracking my anime streaming, it is also one of the most socially and culturally subversive series I've ever seen, challenging so many conventions and stereotypes of Japanese society, from transgender identity to homosexual relationships, if you want a topic that will stir up Japanese social norms, you'll find it here. But all is presented in the most genuine, heartfelt way possible. Truly an anime for our time, released almost a decade ago.
my hidden gem is Now and then Here and there, no one talks about it or has rarely ever watched it, its beautiful dark story which has nausica feel of a dying world, a truly insane antagonist and characters that truly grow and change after their experiences open their eyes to the world they find themselves in, horrors of war, men and to family and survival
Great hidden gem i agree BUT theres a reason nobody talks about it. Because the horrors of war aspect, well talking about that stuff can get you a strike or even axed of YT. Need to be very careful how its covered, though the anime handles the topics discuss there in like a champ YTers need to be careful. Thats my logic anyways, hope he makes a vid on it, carefully.
@@Blazah99 while yes it handles some very heavy topics, horrors of war seems like it only tips the ice berg at times i also feel it does it in such a way you can only make note of it and still cover, its a given its one of those odd Anime originals made before the days of youtube aimed at audience oblivious to something happening across the sea from them.... its one of those anime that makes you feel a range of emotions, the question you need ask yourself is why do we as a culture find such topics hard to talk about so much so that we sweep them under the rug and pretend that this sort of thing isnt happening in third world countries where even basic resources such as water are more valuable than gold... I believe this anime raises those questions and makes you very aware of them and as soon as those gentle credit roll it reflects on itself almost like im glad to be where i am and im thankful for what i have...
I defiantly hold up Xam'd: Lost Memories up on the top of my hidden gems list. You got a gorgeously animated 2008 BONES show with an interesting world and characters. Historically it was one of the first shows that was streamable which is exactly why it's forgotten since for the longest time it was only accessible through the PSN and its shitty pricing model.
O shit yeah that show was great! It wasn't perfect but damn did it do some things right and I remember it for being pretty mature and grounded compared to other shows from the time. I think I can count the amount of times I've seen it talked about in the last decade on one hand.
@@flannelchoke1924 the biggest knock I'd give the series was that the pacing felt rushed. It's one of those shows that really needed a few more episodes to give the plot room to breathe
Appreciate you doing this man, I’ve been watching your reviews as far back as “Desert punk”. Or even a little before so pre 2010 and I can’t wait to see what older stuff you pull out to do videos on. Too many people in the community have forgotten a lot of shows that have been lost with time...
The one anime that I would define as a "hidden gem", for me, is C: The Money of Soul and Possibility Control. Such a cool, interesting battle anime that takes something like economics and makes it into a battle system that actually works and actually has a lot of heart and a TON of style that I've never seen anywhere else, but it flew so far under the radar that it only got 11 episodes instead of 12! And it's such a shame because I loved it so much! I wish more people would check it out and love it like me, then, hopefully, we would be able to get more of it!
Shiki, FMA 2003, Bokurano, Sakurasou, Texhnolyze, C Control, Scrapped Princess, Shin Sekai Yori, Sola, Witchblade, Utawarerumono and Asura Cryin' are just some of the fantastic classics I know of that not enough people talk about. Oh, and I don't know if these ones counts as hidden, but also GaoGaiGar, Getter Robo Armageddon and Ideon Be Invoked.
Hidden gems can be as new as 2-3 yrs old. Some seasons have a fistful of shows that everyone watched and discussed and these shows *heavily* overshadowed certain gems that were probably seen only by you and 12 other people in the whole world. One such show was Hakumei to Mikochi in the winter season 2018. At the time, Sora yori mo tooi basho, Darling in the Franxx and Yuru Camp were all the rage. HtM was, by far, the most heartwarming and soul-healing show of that season. As for older ones... there's Golden Boy that mainly serves as meme fodder nowadays for some, but also Dennou coil, Haibane Renmei and THE first noitaminA series, Honey and Clover.
Man, I’ve been following this channel since forever and this video explains one of the main reasons why Glass reflection will always have a special place in my heart and his videos will continues to spread words about the shows that are good whether if it’s popular or not
My hidden gem is “Now and Then, Here and There” I watched it back in middle school, which was about a decade ago (o no) and even back then it was OLD. Like, I was able to watch it because the whole thing was free on iTunes. But it STUCK with me man. A couple of times a year I’ll still check and see if anyone is talking about it because WOW.
Nabari no Ou is an anime that I would probably put up there as a hidden gem myself; however, seeing as I've never seen even one person discussing it, maybe most people who saw it weren't that big of a fan. I personally think it was a great show with really good characters.
I've just started binging shows from 2000-2010 recently. Been a blast. Can't wait to see what you come up with. ---Edit: Just finished Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu.
One of your recommendations, Princess Jellyfish, is like one of my biggest hidden gems. Colorful characters and good writing. I wish they would make more one day
For me, *Kekkaishi* is possibly my favorite hidden gem. It was never super popular, but it was one of my favorite shounen anime. Probably because I loved kekkaijutsu (the main characters' superpower) so much as a sort of "hard magic system". It's a pretty simple concept, but it gets used in cool novel ways all the time. Both in fights and in amusing everyday life applications. Besides that I also digged the massive Japanese ayakashi/yōkai folklore influences.
Shinsekai Yori and seven kingdoms are my hidden gems and I found out about them thanks to your videos. I appreciate the fact that you speak about less known anime and not only of the newest or most popular ones, it allows me to discover beautiful works I would have never watched otherwise, so I am looking forward to other hidden gems :)
My hidden gem is Zetsuen no Tempest. I've never seen anyone talk about it and reviews from people who have seen it are very high. After watching it it became my favorite anime.
holy shit i know right. for me zetsuen no tempest was one of those anime that left me thinking about it for days after i'd finished. and i just randomly clicked on it- i had never heard anyone talk about it before i watched it and HARDLY heard anyone talk about it afterwords
Precisely why I love this channel! You practically introduce me to anime, so finding more old/"hidden" shows recommended by you is always worth giving a shot for me. I'm surprised at how much your opinions mean to me... Anyway, thanks a whole lot!
This is great! I wish those videos on older anime got more attention because I (being a fan but haven't seen A LOT of shows) really like seeing these reviews or recommendations of older anime to dive into that I may have passed by or never even heard of. Keep up the epic work!
I really like these types of videos that dive deep into other anime instead of those in the current spotlight. After watching the video on Sword of the Stranger I immediately found a way to watch it and oh was I happy that I did. It was amazing and I probably would never have seen it if that video was never made. Please, please keep these videos coming!!!!
I don’t know about hidden or forgotten gems, but I appreciate that you review a lot of “older” shows alongside more recent ones. It gives a nice scale to measure them against, even if I don’t always agree with your opinion on all of them. And it also piques my interest in some really good shows that are not discussed all the time currently, so thanks.
This is why I think Arcada's videos are different form the other anime youtubers. Great video and continue your good work. Looking forward to the reviews or discussions of such hidden gem animes
Please keep doing videos like these and recommending some of the hidden gems. I've been checking out some of the stuff you have recommended and I appreciate being pointed to some of the shows I would not have looked at when I was younger.
Would Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad count as a hidden gem? I'm not exactly sure how popular it was in its day but it was an anime I discovered entirely on my own rather than through word of mouth or recommendations. I don't see it brought up very much these days, but I could be wrong. It's remained a personal favourite of mine for many years.
i for one am VERY happy to hear you'll be doing this! honestly, i've grown pretty tired of the current 'flavour' of anime, especially when it comes to art style, and i've found myself being more and more attracted to shows that aired before 2010. I'm looking forward to recommendations that might spark my interest!
I look forward to your hunt and exploration of hidden gems. I am still thankful for you introducing me to Higurashi which is now one of my favorite shows of all time!
I really appreciate you saying that you’re gonna continue review hidden gems from years past, there’s so many amazing series that have come out that the community just ignores, especially from the 2000s, and it’s great to see you highlighting them
I doubt you'll see this Ark, but in all the years that I've been a serious anime fan, I've never made it a point to keep up with the seasonal shows (the only exception I've made so far is for the new "Fruits Basket" because... well, come on, it's friggin' "FRUITS BASKET"). So, I can't tell you how much it means to me that my favorite anituber actually takes the time to highlight shows and films that the community at large may have written off for one reason or another as more time has passed. This'll sound weird and/or petty, but it makes me and my watching habits feel validated in a fandom where conversely, it sometimes feels like I don't quite fit in because all anyone ever wants to talk about is what's popular for the moment... In case it wasn't obvious, this is my absurdly long-winded way of thanking you for the video and telling you that I'd personally love to see more focused on hidden gems/must-watch anime. I really liked the ones you made about "Chihayafuru" and "Sword of the Stranger" and I haven't even gotten around to watching those myself yet! 🤣
What an interesting dive into what a hidden gem is and I love how you went about it. I've always wanted to find more hidden gems rather than keep up with what's new so yes please share the hidden gems you find!
i love the fact you talk about weirder or forgotten relics. As someone whos been watching anime(manga) on and off since 2000 there are some shows that passed me by or that i completely forgot about . keep on keeping on my dude !
Ok, these are either shit shows, or you may be the first one to actually make a list of hidden gems because, except two of them that I know and like very much, I haven't even heard of the rest.
@@lordfifthissth8258 Well, I guess the only way to know for sure is to watch something from that list :D Although you should definitely check if the show appeals to you first. I guess I might make small descriptions to each later...
It's TH-camrs like Arkada that help turn new anime fans into long time ones. I've watched several classic anime after seeing his recommendation videos, and have rarely been disappointed.
"Hidden gems" are my favourite thing to hear about, honestly. Hype really turns me off, so it often takes me a long time to check out a "good" show from the current season (like...years). I want quality!
@@ckimehang7112 I don't necessarily think they're bad. I just really hate hype, because I find it so "noisy" with everyone clamoring constantly about the show in question that I can't even get my own thoughts straight. @_@
I used the term "Hidden Gem" in the title of my blog-post on Galaxy Fraulein Yuna. That post is over a year old now, I at around the same time discussed Magical Girl Pretty Sammy and Daybreak Illusion for MahouShouJune of 2019.
Something I count as a hidden gem is Heartcatch Precure it’s never been legally streamable but my hope is that with crunchyroll picking up the most recent precure series for simulcast Healin Good it might at least make people interested and look up the older seasons.
It might just be me, but I really like these topical videos more than deep dives on an anime. I feel like I’m always playing catch-up (currently watching spring 2019 anime) and deep dives are of anime I won’t see for a while or older ones to add to my list of shame. With topical, I can appreciate points made without having to be cult of the new. In short, keep it up. I love your videos!
My initial reaction was to say "No, Monster is not hidden" but then I realized that I have neither heard nor seen anybody reference it for years. Good choice.
It's probably too slow for a lot of the community to like, it's also got pretty dated looking animation which probsbly causes some newer fans to avoid it.
Man, am I glad you decided to go back to your roots. Plenty cover the recent and the years where anitubers did not care that the anime they covered was recent as long as they thought it was worth reviewing is almost gone now. You've been on the fence of this for a couple of years now, but glad you took the decision to take the plunge. As for hidden gems, one I always reference is Welcome to the NHK, a series not well known outside a handful of veterans, but the veterans that did watch it cannot ignore the impact it has on modern society that slowly devolves into an age of isolation. A unique experience of an anime to this day and well worth the watch even more so now during the age of anxiety.
These are hidden gems IMO: Astra lost in space The ones within O maidens in your savage season Shuffle Amagami SS Dog and Scissors Chubyou Gekihatsu Boy
My Hidden Gem is "Now and Then, Here and There" (Ima, Soko ni Iru Boku). It was the first anime series that I ever watched and it's the one show that I've seen more than any other (probably around 30 times start to finish). I was so blown away by it, I had no idea anything could even BE that good. It left such an impression on me that I can't go more than a few months without rewatching it. Sadly most people have never heard of it.
Old, well, my first Anime VHS I bought in 1996 was Projekt A-ko, but the first movie I saw on TV was Space Firebird. Mountain Girl Heidi and the like were long before that, I know, but in my childhood I didn't take them for something special, just a style of cartoon that just was there. I turn 41this summer btw.
This, though I would recommend the manga over anime. The anime is geared more towards kids and the humor is kinda turned up for the show. The manga takes itself more seriously and imo delivers it’s message a lot better.
Beast player Erin was one I really liked, beautiful music, clear progression, lovely visuals, character depth. I have never seen talked about and I only found it because of a music video in the abyss that is TH-cam
@@Jarhead1021 I really liked the story, it was fairly well paced and went from when Erin was a child to her adulthood covering the important parts without dragging from what I remember.
@Anna E i see, thanks! that’s really cool to hear actually. And like you said there’s music of it on TH-cam, so I’m surprised for not hearing about it until recently. Gonna keep it in mind to see it one day.
But... Run with the Wind is quite new... I loved it btw, but I'm fairly sure it has quite a following. Anyway, I've already added the rest of your suggestions to my hidden gem watchlist, thanks for the recommendations!!
You're the first person I've ever seen refer to Kono oto Tomare as "Stop this Sound". But yes, it very much is a hidden gem despite airing last year. I listen to that final koto performance rather often Oh, and Silver Spoon is also amazing. Every time I see someone say "Hiromu Arakawa is overrated since she only wrote one good manga", I facepalm because Silver Spoon is also amazing and the fact that it's so different but still so good is a testament to her talent
@@maskofice9432 Silver Spoon is literally my life in an anime. I grew up in a big city and ended up majoring in ag and now I'm a public educator for horticulture.
I also really appreciate your coverage of the gems. I've only been watching anime for the last couple of years, so it is harder to unearth them when you haven't been in the middle of it as they were airing.
I'm one of those people who appreciate that you are talking about older anime hidden gems or not. I'm 27 and have been watching anime for over a decade and at this point there are a lot of shows I kind of forgot about. Plus work made it so I have significantly less time to watch. Recently however, my younger brother(16) got into anime and he has been asking me for recommendations. He doesn't speak English(yet) so your channel wasn't that much of a help directly to him, however I've been using your reviews to remember a lot of the old shows from the 00's. For the newer shows there are countless others who cover it so he doesn't need help with those anyway.
One hidden gem in mecha genre I'd recommend is Gun X Sword It has it all, action, revenge, giant robots, great characters and an excellent dub with a lot of familiar voices
Honestly IMO, stuff that I tend to remember and like aren't always talked about. It's rewarding to find a show that you really like that other people haven't seen, before you recommend it to your friends, and they like it too. I personally love talking about these kinds of anime and stuff, heck a lot of my own anime based content are of obscurer stories because I find a big passion when talking about those very hidden gems. It's just really damn nice to share why underrated stories are worth the time to those who may be interested.
Would Naoki Urasawa's Monster be classified as a hidden gem? How about Hikaru No Go? Both animes are good. Monster is an amazing anime that I do not hear no one talk about because it is not a shonen, Mecha, or isekai.
@@walterwhite7376 it's an amazing anime. I've been into anime since the 80s growing up watching shows like speed racer, robotech (yes I know it's Macross but I loved it), Voltron, and many more. None of my friends never even knew it existed.
Really appreciate what you're trying to do. I'm definetely looking forward to some "hidden gem" recommendations. And if anyone here enjoys iyashikei anime, I can't think of a better example of a hidden gem than Tamayura. I only stumbled upon it by accident and I never really encountered anyone talking/writing about Tamayura, ever.
I couldn't agree more! One of my top favorite anime of all time, and I have never once seen it referenced or recommended in all the media I consume or on the platforms I traverse daily
I'm just happy when someone brings it up because it's hard to find people who have watched it before hand and can talk about different aspects of the show. The only time I've really seen it talked about is Jesuotaku's old top 25 anime, and Lilac's anime review talking about it.
Yeah, I think time has not been kind to it, in terms of newer fans watching it. It has the same issues as Serial Experiments Lain, in that it is well know for those who were watching when it was released, but not so much since.
Agreed, I still love this show, but it seems that people have pretty much forgotten about it. Maybe it's partly because a lot of people didn't like the ending...(personally I liked the ending lol)
I’ve been watching you for as long as I remember, and I’ve been watching Anime since “Ah! My Goddess” and the first “Ghost in the Shell” DVD came out (first DVD I ever bought!) I love all your videos and insights on the community and my Wife and I use a lot of your recommendations to find things to watch. Please keep doing video’s referring to hidden gems!
Maybe its because my circle doesn't talk about it so much but I feel that the 2011 Idolm@ster anime seems to be forgotten. Especially after the rise other "Idol" based anime like Love Live and Zombieland Saga. Story is solid and as far as I could tell the performances were hand drawn so I appreciate that.
Do it! It was one of my first anime (because it aired on G4 in the US when I was in high school), and I loved it. Still think it's one of the most unique shows I've seen.
@@jettivonaviska never thought someone would talk about that show. I'm really curious what people think about it, the OVA is an absolute masterpiece but the TV show was wasted imo
I love the videos like this! I also enjoy that you don’t focus on everything that is currently airing. Every season there are so many people who flood Instagram and TH-cam with stuff about the currently airing shows. Sure some of them are really good, but most are average. You’re right to say that it’s near impossible to keep up with the seasons. Every season there are a handful of shows that look interesting to me. I add them to my ever growing list and might get around to them eventually. We need someone to help remind us of all the great older shows out there. A lot of them are better than the stuff currently airing as well. I just started Psycho Pass not long a go and it’s great!
I would love to see you tackle Descending Stories (Showa genroku rakugo shinju) through this light because I think it sits at an interesting place in your definition. It never got much notoriety at the time but is undoubtedly a gem. It sucks you in and brings the manga to life in a way few other shows do, perhaps because it's about storytelling.
@@hitandruncommentor Well, the Nadia Anime ended on a positive note, so I can't think of anything it add to it to make it better than it already is? In other words: there's no need for me to watch the Nadia movie. Although part of me wants to watch it at least once.(which probably won't happen?)
Gegege no Kitaro (2018) is my hidden gem. Even though it is relatively recent, it is not well-known amongst even the hardcore anime community and is easily dismissed as a kids show by regular anime fans. But, the show has so much more going for it than the general anime community gives it credit for. It has some amazing arcs, social commentary that isn't trying to fulfill an agenda, meaningful messages, and the most fantastic characterization I've ever seen in anime. It got some attention when it first started airing because of Neko Musume being such a waifu, but the show quickly faded from public anime conscious over its run. It is by far my favorite incarnation of the franchise.
yeah I hate how people stop talking about old anime on youtube because they have to chase trends and I appreciate the heck out of the fact that you like to do it and applaud that you are going to do it more
I consider a hidden gem being something you hold dear to your heart for whatever reason. You know, that one anime that absolutely resonated with you even if others didn’t like it or it flew under the radar. But it’s your anime and nobody can take that away from you obscurity and all. **cough** Dororo! *cough**
I meant the new one, but I’m not gonna lie I’m curious as hell about the original version as well as the manga. Unfortunately old animes and manga can be a bitch to find.
i enjoyed dororo . i felt it quite exhausting by the end as it was very visually dark aswell as being dark story wise which is coming from an MIA fan . Good show tho
That series both defined and ruined superpower anime for me. Graphically it still looks amazing and the plot showed a depth which most anime in that genre lacked. Also, season 1 is a hidden gem. Skip the rest of the series.
Black lagoon yes. But I haven’t heard about Darker than black in like 5 years. Which is still pretty impressive. (Though as aforementioned I guess it depends on social circles)
I normally never comment on videos (and am a bit late to the party here) BUT this channel is awesome! I am always looking for new AND old anime to watch - especially Dubs (I know controversial but I love dub). The first video that I watched from this channel and to this day for me THE BEST (recommendations) video I have watched on youtube was "Anime To Watch If You Are Disappointed In Game of Thrones". The anime that were recommended were great and I did not knew most of them. "Moribito" for example was and is an amazing anime and in my option - which brings me back to the topic of this video - very much a hidden gem! So BIG THANK YOU from me. I'm very excited to see more and new "hidden gem" recommendations soon and hope they will be as good as the video and anime mentioned above.
I was just thinking the other day how many anitubers would not review anime shows anymore. While the other aspects of anime culture are interesting, I miss reviews. I’m looking forward to seeing your hidden gems. :)

Well there's never been a better year to do it.
@@thedopdeity hellll yeahhhh
The Rose of Versailles is true hidden gem and will be worth talking about
I feel like it’s hard to have an anime from before the 90s that isn’t Akira or Ghibli as a hidden gem, because people just don’t watch anime from that period.
Green Matty Damn I need to rewatch Haibane Renmei now. Don’t think I ever watched the last episode.
@@danielwhyatt3278I Hope you enjoy it :)
shin sekai yori is hidden for a good reason
I wouldn't consider any of them hidden, but maybe I'm just saying that because I've heard of it, so I just assume a lot others have had as well.
Shinsekai Tori has over 200.000 votes and it's in top 150 popularity on MAL. It's nowhere near a hidden gem, it is super popular
The same goes for Mushishi
my hidden gem is Gosick, people rarely talks about that show.
I really need to watch that
I like Victorica but the prota remind me to Kirito
That's an anime that I've been meaning to watch but still haven't gotten around to it. I hear almost nothing but good things about it.
Back in the day it was really hyped up,and it’s really not that good
Thank you for continuing to highlight older shows. I do not keep up with the current shows too much, so I much prefer hearing about a variety of different shows that have "proven the test of time", so to say.
My favourite Hidden Gem is Princess Tutu.
I would...die for you...
Not sure Princess Tutu would qualify as hidden... Sure is hell of a gem though I'll give you that.
My favorite show EVER!!
At least one of the few I feel more related to
Struggled to finish the first episode, does it get better?
@@francis6489 my wife had me watch the show and I was bored for the first 5 episodes and then it became great!
I will always talk about Death Parade always. That anime changed my life perspective I'll be damned if I let it get erased over time.
Death Parade was sooo good!
Snow Anaya true death parade is a REALLY GOOD show...MUST WATCH
I was trying to find a comment about death parade, it’s such a great and criminally underrated show
I felt it relied to heavily on the shock value for me but I'm kinda cynical who can't turn my brain off at all while watching something
Honestly I feel like any1 know about death parade it's not near my fav list tbh but I think it was great and I even cried in the end for some reason and the only anime that could I achive it before was something like I want to eat your pancreas Wich was very surprising to me
Off the top of my head, I can point to three shows that I would consider hidden gems, both adhering to and somewhat subverting the metrics laid out here:
1. Crest/Banner of the Stars (1999-2005)
This series holds a very special place in my heart as it was the series that turned me from a mainstream anime fan to a connoisseur.
2. Hakumei & Mikochi (2018)
A surprisingly recent title for such a distinction, but one that I feel has earned it for how little anyone, even your own good self, Ark, talks about it.
3. Wandering Son (2011)
In this current age of social upheaval, I'm genuinely surprised nobody is bringing up this work.
Hourou Musuko (Wandering Son) is great!
my hidden gem is Now and then Here and there, no one talks about it or has rarely ever watched it, its beautiful dark story which has nausica feel of a dying world, a truly insane antagonist and characters that truly grow and change after their experiences open their eyes to the world they find themselves in, horrors of war, men and to family and survival
I wish more people would check it out and love it like me, then, hopefully, we would be able to get more of it!
great anime! but regarding the episode count, it was part of a block (noitamina) that usually have that episode count staple of 11 episodes
Dude I love that anime so much, I have no idea why people don't like it and it bothers me. Easily in my top 10 anime
Man i loved that series.
@Janeiro I Yes, but what about outside that community?
Oh God Erased and Death Parade are both phenomenal. It's so sad how nobody is talking about them
Hidden gems can be as new as 2-3 yrs old.
Everyone needs to watch Gankutsuou the count of monte cristo. i never see people talk about this amazing anime
Thank you!!!
Actually its more the source material that is genuinely amazing, its not like getting a "like old times, but in space" version has done it any good
Yeah I'm a little surprised this one has gotten forgotten too.
I watched it on syfy on "animonday" however long ago that was lol - I consider it one of my favorites as well
Man, I watched it recently... Still a gem
Daani Kay haruhi is my fav series of all time ever
The film is one the most unforgettable and surprisingly inmersive experiences I've ever had. Absolutely worth it!
A must watch for every anime fan!
HAIL HARUHI
@@waltworks8389 === I just finished the movie, and i got to agree with you. It was amazing. Such a good ending.
One of your recommendations, Princess Jellyfish, is like one of my biggest hidden gems. Colorful characters and good writing. I wish they would make more one day
I love that one! It would be wonderful if they completed the anime since the manga finished
Kekkaishi's so good. I've bought half of the manga so far.
I want this guy to be the DM in a game of dungeons and dragons w/ me and my friends
This is great! I wish those videos on older anime got more attention because I (being a fan but haven't seen A LOT of shows) really like seeing these reviews or recommendations of older anime to dive into that I may have passed by or never even heard of. Keep up the epic work!
I'd say Princess Principal already counts as a hidden gem.
And it's only 3 years old.
Thanks, Amazon... 🙄

Shinsekai-Yori is a hidden gem
Agreed
I don’t know about hidden or forgotten gems, but I appreciate that you review a lot of “older” shows alongside more recent ones.
It gives a nice scale to measure them against, even if I don’t always agree with your opinion on all of them.
And it also piques my interest in some really good shows that are not discussed all the time currently, so thanks.
Bartender is a great hidden gem. Such a great representation of alcohol and problems that people can generally relate to.
This is why I think Arcada's videos are different form the other anime youtubers. Great video and continue your good work. Looking forward to the reviews or discussions of such hidden gem animes
Amazing gems ---Black Magic M-66, Ushio and Tora the original , and Dominion Tank Police
It's remained a personal favourite of mine for many years.
it is
Still a fave
i for one am VERY happy to hear you'll be doing this! honestly, i've grown pretty tired of the current 'flavour' of anime, especially when it comes to art style, and i've found myself being more and more attracted to shows that aired before 2010. I'm looking forward to recommendations that might spark my interest!
Flip Flappers comes to my mind instantly when mentioning hidden gems.
I look forward to your hunt and exploration of hidden gems. I am still thankful for you introducing me to Higurashi which is now one of my favorite shows of all time!
"Forgotten gems" shouldn't be confused with hidden ones.
For example Runway de Waratte is a modern hidden gem
I agree. If show was among top 3 most popular in its season (even 20 years back) it cannot be hidden only forgotten.
@@matijamaksan4344 That is just semantics
Armored Trooper Votoms, which just got a complete collection released over 25 years later.
I've always wanted to find more hidden gems rather than keep up with what's new so yes please share the hidden gems you find!
please do a anime gemz of the the decade 1960, 1970, 1980,1990,2000
A most excellent suggestion. Please Arkada, take up the challenge.
I third this. So much good anime that have been forgotten.
i love the fact you talk about weirder or forgotten relics. As someone whos been watching anime(manga) on and off since 2000 there are some shows that passed me by or that i completely forgot about . keep on keeping on my dude !

"Hidden gems" are my favourite thing to hear about, honestly. Hype really turns me off, so it often takes me a long time to check out a "good" show from the current season (like...years). I want quality!
Well heres some
Kono Oto Tomare, Runway de Waratte
Just because they're hype/mainstream doesn't mean they're bad. They're *usually* popular for a reason. (Just my opinion)
I mean, it managed to get Glitter Force, but it's definitely more Popular in Japan, much like Aikatsu
Precure is one of my favorite animes.
animedude8712 awesome! Which seasons do you like? Suite and Heatcatch are some of my favs.
Why would I want to use trashroll tho I watched over 150 anime illegally and that for the better
My hidden gem is _Monster_ I don't see many people talk about that show anymore.
because its old and drags quiet a bit
Monster is Urasawa's most acclaimed work, don't kid yourself.
It being long out of print and somewhat lengthy contributes to that too.
This anime work during the pandemic.
When people are inside. After ten years later their is no show like this. I rewatch it every year.
These are hidden gems IMO:
Astra lost in space
The ones within
O maidens in your savage season
Shuffle
Amagami SS
Dog and Scissors
Chubyou Gekihatsu Boy
My Hidden Gem is "Now and Then, Here and There" (Ima, Soko ni Iru Boku). It was the first anime series that I ever watched and it's the one show that I've seen more than any other (probably around 30 times start to finish). I was so blown away by it, I had no idea anything could even BE that good. It left such an impression on me that I can't go more than a few months without rewatching it. Sadly most people have never heard of it.
More people need to talk about Kara no Kyoukai.
Yeah, KnK is hella underappreciated.
Agreed
In all fate universe madness, why is KnK so underated? More so than tthe moon type/type moon (?)
Janeiro I and they make a nice mishmash of tropes and jokes. ☺️
Kodomo no Omocha (Kodocha) its such a good show yet no one talks about it
thanks, so glad i didn't hallucinate that series after loving the manga.
Was just thinking about this one! Haven’t seen it yet but was really curious about the story. How was this like if I may ask?
@@Jarhead1021 I really liked the story, it was fairly well paced and went from when Erin was a child to her adulthood covering the important parts without dragging from what I remember.
@Anna E i see, thanks! that’s really cool to hear actually. And like you said there’s music of it on TH-cam, so I’m surprised for not hearing about it until recently. Gonna keep it in mind to see it one day.
My top 5 hidden gems:
Silver Spoon
Kyousougiga
The Eccentric Family
Run With the Wind
Stop This Sound
I listen to that final koto performance rather often
Oh, and Silver Spoon is also amazing. Every time I see someone say "Hiromu Arakawa is overrated since she only wrote one good manga", I facepalm because Silver Spoon is also amazing and the fact that it's so different but still so good is a testament to her talent
Silver Spoon is the best Slice of Life, I've watched. Its truly an amazing anime :)
Silver Spoon needs another season asap!!
Let's get started starting our hidden gems. My top 3 are:
-xxxHolic
-D.Gray-Man
-Heroic Age

D.Gray-Man yooo the last 50 episodes are so good
I'm one of those people who appreciate that you are talking about older anime hidden gems or not.
One hidden gem in mecha genre I'd recommend is Gun X Sword
It has it all, action, revenge, giant robots, great characters and an excellent dub with a lot of familiar voices
I just watched Gun X Sword last year, and it is SO GOOD. Definitely one of the best mecha anime I've ever seen.
Yep that's a good series
We all appreciate your passion for art. Thank you for showing us all the good things we've let slip through the cracks!
Do a review of Casshern sins, thats quite the hidden gem right there.
Oh yesss! I've just watched it last year...still amazed, it was really good :)
Love monster it’s in my top 5 oat!

@@walterwhite7376 it's an amazing anime. I've been into anime since the 80s growing up watching shows like speed racer, robotech (yes I know it's Macross but I loved it), Voltron, and many more. None of my friends never even knew it existed.
Hikaru no Go, yeah. Anything by Urasawa is still super popular though, especially Monster
Monster is pretty popular

His works are just too good.

I couldn't agree more! One of my top favorite anime of all time, and I have never once seen it referenced or recommended in all the media I consume or on the platforms I traverse daily
It was my gateway anime! (Spice and Wolf being my 2nd), and its really a good watch!
I remember being so invested in this one i cried so much
I'm just happy when someone brings it up because it's hard to find people who have watched it before hand and can talk about different aspects of the show. The only time I've really seen it talked about is Jesuotaku's old top 25 anime, and Lilac's anime review talking about it.
Thank you soooo much for realising a new video. Really missed this, and it’s covering such an important topic.👌🏼
Me personally I think that Ergo proxy is a hidden gem
its got about the same logged numbers as paprika.... definitely reminds me of psychedelics
I love Ergo Proxy! Its pretty high in popularity on MAL but no one talks about it anymore. Its so great.
kinda?? it's pretty iconic. i think a lot of new viewers don't know what it is but in my opinion i'd still say it's relevant
I watched it several years ago. I felt that it was pretty good, but I personally wouldn't call it a gem.
Yeah, I think time has not been kind to it, in terms of newer fans watching it. It has the same issues as Serial Experiments Lain, in that it is well know for those who were watching when it was released, but not so much since.
I would say that Tamayura is a hidden gem in the slice of life genre.
Its quite relaxing and managed to get 2 seasons and OVAs and 4 movies in parts.
Man erased is such a good show and it's crazy to see how it went from the peak of a modern classic to a barely talked about show
Agreed, I still love this show, but it seems that people have pretty much forgotten about it. Maybe it's partly because a lot of people didn't like the ending...(personally I liked the ending lol)
I'm still so glad I watched it after it all aired...I don't think I could've taken it!
Thank you, as someone disillusioned with the seasonal grind, hidden gems basically are my passion. I want to see more people share that passion.
When he said “TIME” I felt that more thanks to the Death Note OST 😂
Nice one My man
I’ve been watching you for as long as I remember, and I’ve been watching Anime since “Ah! My Goddess” and the first “Ghost in the Shell” DVD came out (first DVD I ever bought!)
I love all your videos and insights on the community and my Wife and I use a lot of your recommendations to find things to watch. Please keep doing video’s referring to hidden gems!
Heh someone else remember Ah! my goddess, that makes me feel better.
My first thought was Shinsekai Yori. I never heard anyone talk about it, and it was a huge, pleasant surprise when GR reviewed it.
I look forward to you doing a Hidden Gem review for ROD The TV.
You might be joking here. but I do own the series on DVD...
I just recently started watching. ROD ova, 5 star. Fast, inventive and no loose ends. Making my way through ROD tv now.
Someone say ROD tv!? yes please review!
The moment I heard “hidden gem” I thought about Ergo Proxy, Monster, Shaman King, Black Lagoon, and BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad. OMG, they are so good!
I wouldn't call a single one of those "hidden gem". They're old but they get montioned all of the time. I kinda get why this video was made now.
Yeah, Black Lagoon and Beck in particular are probably among the most talked-about in their respective genres...
Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water is a Hidden Gem for me.
But can we leave that horrible movie hidden and forgotten? please? pretty please?
I only found it because of Super Robot Wars lol.
Glad I did.
@@hitandruncommentor Never seen the Nadia Movie. But I've heard a lot of negative reviews on it?
Nine_Tails137 one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen.
Kino's Journey (2003) is my hidden gem. Haven't seen the new one tho
Don't watch the new one, its all the slow of the old with none of the thoughtfulness.
yeah I hate how people stop talking about old anime on youtube because they have to chase trends and I appreciate the heck out of the fact that you like to do it and applaud that you are going to do it more
I consider a hidden gem being something you hold dear to your heart for whatever reason. You know, that one anime that absolutely resonated with you even if others didn’t like it or it flew under the radar. But it’s your anime and nobody can take that away from you obscurity and all.
**cough** Dororo! *cough**
Do you mean the old dororo, the one that came out in 1969 with Osamu Dezaki’s name often attached or the one that came out I think a year ago?
I meant the new one, but I’m not gonna lie I’m curious as hell about the original version as well as the manga. Unfortunately old animes and manga can be a bitch to find.
But that is not what the term means...
Dororo is indeed a hidden gem though. Channels like this barely cover good stuff like that cos he watches ridiculous moe garbage.
i enjoyed dororo . i felt it quite exhausting by the end as it was very visually dark aswell as being dark story wise which is coming from an MIA fan . Good show tho
Thank you so much for introducing me to Chihayafuru. I've never really heard about it before I watched your video and I absolutely love itl
Darker Than Black has become a Hidden Gem.
That series both defined and ruined superpower anime for me. Graphically it still looks amazing and the plot showed a depth which most anime in that genre lacked. Also, season 1 is a hidden gem. Skip the rest of the series.
This! Watch it people, you won't regret it
Only the 2nd season is on Hulu and it's waaacckkk
Black lagoon yes. But I haven’t heard about Darker than black in like 5 years. Which is still pretty impressive. (Though as aforementioned I guess it depends on social circles)
Chinese Electric Batman, fuck yea!
Boogiepop Phantom is definitely a hidden gem I recommend.
A worthy aim, I look forward to you pointing out more series I've never got around to taking off my bookmark shelf ;) .
My recommended hidden gem: NANA
so great
Not exactly hidden in the shoujo scene but good try
@@V2ULTRAKill is a Josei
I was just thinking the other day how many anitubers would not review anime shows anymore. While the other aspects of anime culture are interesting, I miss reviews. I’m looking forward to seeing your hidden gems. :)
