And Chaka was devastatingly attractive, witty and she truly loved the audience. I told her that I first saw her as a high school student in concert at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, 1977. She said not many people were bold enough to just call her "old." A treasure! Forever young!

It's not really a black thing. It's just the ancient art of singing from the soul (hence, soul music). It came from years of suffering so when you sang, you kind of got lost in it. You feel every word. You understand the pain (or joy). And you also sang the song all the way through from start to finish because singing a verse over and over then piecing together the best bits loses all emotion. I've bawled my eyes out singing certain songs and battled through to the end (slightly embarrassing admitting that) but people appreciate the points where you're not 100% pitch perfect because they can hear why. It's quite cathartic to be honest. It's a shame these modern black singers aren't even close to the greats. I have no idea what they're talking about and it's all generic screeching.

It's not really a black thing. It's just the ancient art of singing from the soul (hence, soul music).
It came from years of suffering so when you sang, you kind of got lost in it. You feel every word. You understand the pain (or joy). And you also sang the song all the way through from start to finish because singing a verse over and over then piecing together the best bits loses all emotion. I've bawled my eyes out singing certain songs and battled through to the end (slightly embarrassing admitting that) but people appreciate the points where you're not 100% pitch perfect because they can hear why.
It's quite cathartic to be honest.
It's a shame these modern black singers aren't even close to the greats. I have no idea what they're talking about and it's all generic screeching.
