My wife and I saw the imitable Chaka Khan last year in Gary, Indiana. Her performance was second to none. Her vocals were incredible, the band was outstanding. And Chaka was devastatingly attractive, witty and she truly loved the audience. I told her that I first saw her as a high school student in concert at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, 1977. She said not many people were bold enough to just call her "old." A treasure! Forever young!

It's not really a black thing. It's just the ancient art of singing from the soul (hence, soul music). It came from years of suffering so when you sang, you kind of got lost in it. You feel every word. You understand the pain (or joy). And you also sang the song all the way through from start to finish because singing a verse over and over then piecing together the best bits loses all emotion. I've bawled my eyes out singing certain songs and battled through to the end (slightly embarrassing admitting that) but people appreciate the points where you're not 100% pitch perfect because they can hear why. It's quite cathartic to be honest. It's a shame these modern black singers aren't even close to the greats. I have no idea what they're talking about and it's all generic screeching.

She once scouted out my ex,- boyfriend for a backstage meet at her performance at Painters Mill Music Fair in Baltimore County Owings Mills, Maryland. He was do shocked. he did not get up VB to go with her staffperson... Now, years later, he, a very handsome & congenially sexy man named "Blue" regretted his unnerving descent. Wow, I would have obliged her just out of courtesy if I was him or his queen sitting next to him at the concert. She performed at our annual ARTSCAPE event where I ranked as an ARTSCAPE visual art Finalist as Denise Parker, (medium-pen & ink) from the Shipacup's Blue Peach Grsphic Art Company. I will boast about Chaka (Yvette) forever with love for her inspiring voice & life lessons. Love the lyrics of "Angel" Can you imagine her rendition of the Isley Brother' s " Brown Eyed Girl."
