A lot of people are saying it's about drugs, but I honestly interpret it as being about escapism from the stresses of modern life to the innocence of childhood, and a desire to return to the happiness and interests in cool stuff like dinosaurs one had as a kid, that are now suppressed as an adult. Which IMO hits a lot harder.
The only reason I stopped being interested in dinosaurs is that I memorized three encyclopedias about them. for simply the topic has been exhausted. and for some reason my parents didn’t want to send me to history university.

Fan theory: it's a metaphor for people who live in the past/can't find hope in anything but the glory of WW2 Germany and dinosaurs refer to those German heros. He's completely disassociating from modern life because the glory of that time is the only thing that brings him joy and he's resolved to stay in reliving a time he never even saw with his own eyes. At the end he realizes he's losing his life to his complete disassociation.
