What a score. These two golden age talents in one sitting! The stories they could tell would fill a dozen interviews. Please get them back as often as you can. I just watched the Searchers again last night. Now after seeing this, I can't resist the urge to go another round with Rio Grande. Aww, who am I kidding? It has to be the entire trilogy, right? This stuff never gets old. Bravo Rob!
Thanks, niknik. It was terrific to have them together. I did another session with them at the Williamsburg Nostalgia Festival which was also very enjoyable. I’m working on next Sunday’s AWOW, also about Duke, and Patrick joins me to talk about the John Wayne Exhibition in Fort Worth.
@@AWordonWesterns That sounds fantastic and I'll be waiting for that one to drop for sure. FYI, You're probably aware of this but The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance was just released on 4K a few days ago. Hard to believe that this is the only film of Duke's out on 4K. There ought to be about a dozen of his films out by now. Might be a good time to toss out a quickie segment on it if you have something in the vault or perhaps you touch on it with your upcoming interview with Patrick. At any rate, thanks for all you do to keep the Western flag flying. We really do appreciate your hard work!!!
My wife asked why I enjoy the western's so much. All I could think of was that there was this ethical character about them. A clarity of purpose and a sense of completion. A job needed to be done and it got done right. Whatever it was that needed to be resolved was correctly resolved. And unlike our world today, I find them reassuring. That generation that saw 2 World Wars, the Roaring 20's and the Great Depression were tested by fire. And, It all came through in their personalities. Great interview Rob. Thank You. However, The 3 Musketeers is still being worked on!!
Who can forget, Claude Jarman Jr.'s wonderful performance as "Jody" in the classic movie "The Yearling" (1946), along with Gregory Peck, Jane Wyman, Chill Wills and Forrest Tucker! - Thanks Rob 🌈
Victor Mclaglen was born in the UK with 8 brothers and 1 sister. He joined the British Army at 14, but later discharged for joining under age. Moved to Canada became wrestler and boxer the constable in the Winnipeg police force. He fought boxer Jack Johnson. In 1913 returned to the UK joining the British Army served in WW1. He as military assistant provost marshal for the city of BAGHDAD. Starting his acting career in 1920 moving to Hollywood in 1925. He was a larger than life character.
There will never be another John Wayne. He & the people he was in the John Ford movies with, we’re a bread that doesn’t exist anymore. He was & still is my Idol for so many reasons. I wish I had the time & words to explain how I feel & how much I miss, we miss him & that era. God bless this country & John Wayne.
REALLY ENJOYED THIS!....THE YEARLING WAS A FANTASTIC FILM AND STILL BRINGS TEARS TO THESE 73 YEAR OLD EYES. I SAW, BUT NEVER MET, PAT AND ETHAN WAYNE IN A NEWPORT BEACH, CA NIGHTCLUB IN THE EARLY '80s. GLAD TO KNOW CLAUDE JARMAN JR. IS ALIVE AND WELL!.....
I recently finished reading 'Company Of Heroes', and now possess a glimmer of a clue of what it was like to work for John Ford. Wonderful interview, Rob!
What a blessing to still have Patrick Wayne with us and hear the memories of working & hanging with his dad....still looking great brother!....your the best Rob, thank you!
A great interview with two actors that both worked with Duke and Ford the most indelible force on movies and westerns. Both actors Patrick and Claude have been in serious movies as well as lighter fare but both took their jobs seriously enough to finish the picture. Great job Rob and thanks for this interview.
Rob, thanks! It was a pleasure to watch this great interview with John Wayne's son: Patrick Wayne as well as the humble and super talented Claude Jarman, Jr. That brought a lot of memories.
Wow! Jewels here… Ken Curtis w/Tommy Dorsey! The connections and information from these interviews is astounding. Thank you Rob, you’re a jewel to do these and share. 👍🤠
Hey, that was great! And perfect timing, as I just read Jarman's book last week. "Rio Grande" has always been one of my favorites in the John Ford canon. Fabulous script, beautiful camera work, and very convincing acting. I realize that it was just a requirement for "The Quiet Man," but Ford wasn't capable of making throwaways, and this turned out to be a tremendous wrap-up to the so-called "Calvary Trilogy." Thanks once again, Rob!
That's a very fine interview! It's great to see Patrick Wayne. I was happy to hear Claude Jarman mention "Intruder in the Dust". It is a wonderful adaption of Faulkner's novel and Mr. Jarman gave a stellar performance. A very underrated film.
Oh yes, Cause's performance in "Yearling" was EXTRAORDINARY. "Intruder" is special for me being a Black man. First movie I saw where a Black character was given dignity, pride and integrity. Juano Hernandez performance resulted in the movie being banned in many southern states
I'm loving these interviews! One thing that sometimes gets overlooked in regards to the Searchers is it's relation to Rock and Roll history. Upon seeing the film, Buddy Holly was inspired to write That'll Be the Day, the phrase that John Wayne utters a few times in the film. Its probably one of the first instances of a film inspiring something that became a pop culture icon.
Great interview with two great actors and the movie so great, just such a great cavalry movie i have All 3 on dvd 📀 and fort Apache on super 8 from England, they Are just so awsome and always strong these Westerns thanks Rob Word of Word on Westerns laird of Word manor your friend tom now and always 🤩 🤩 USA 😎
Loved “She Wore a Yellow Ribbon” and “Red River”. All of John Wayne’s early pictures with his horse, Duke. His birthday was celebrated on Saturday, this past Memorial Day weekend on GRIT extra and on OUTLAW TV, the latest all Westerns OTA TV. Wonderful pictures. Loved John Agar and Ben Johnson as well. Loved that John Wayne had many of his friends star in his pictures. “Hatari” was panned; but, is also a favorite. John Wayne was a true American and a man to be admired. Patrick Wayne exhibits many of his father’s qualities as well as character.
The Searchers , The John Ford.......Masterpiece ......Loved to see Pat Wayne,,,,,,,,an Maureen O'Hara was the Top 10 Most Beautiful Women to do Westerns..Vera Miles was in this Category, Thanks Rob Word ,,,,, for a wonderful interview,,,,,,
OMG......Rob, this is amazing!!!!!!!!! Thank you so very much!!!!!!!! I know that the people that you are with are amazing, but never forget that you are amazing, too!!!!!!!
i just love watching these interviews. my grandma was ALWAYS busy with her 8 children and the house. but she always loved her a good ball game and western and watching with her was how u spent time with her. she’s been long gone now but i feel like i understand her a little more with each interview, if that makes sense. thanks again rob! 🤗
I came to UK from Pakistan in 1969 as 7 yrs with my mom n sisters n my dad was her during the war as he was in Indian army n brought my elder 8 yrs old brother in 1967 and we always watch these cowboy films with big John and Al other old cowboy films n james cagney films n were hooked ever since n now my children are hooked too great films for whole family with morals n great actor's
Another great interview, Rob! Two of my favorite actors. The stunt that Patrick Wayne by replying "no" to the Claude Jarmin riding Roman reminds me of his villainous character in "Rustler's Rhapsody." I like the whole John Ford-John Wayne Cavalry trilogy. These interviews mention other films, especially westerns, that I would like to see. Also, recently I have been seeing ads of "The Cowboys" and "The McCandles Family" reunions on Grit that I would like to watch. Thank you for these great interviews!
Good old Favorite Hero Claude Jarmin! Had an awesome talk with him in Williamsburg, VA at the Nostalgia Fest where I met Rob, Pat Wayne, and even got to help out Andy Prine a bit, during the show. 👍👍🤠
Another truly fantastic conversation between about film. As usual you ask the right questions to get remembrances that just don't happen any where else. Your quests also play off each other to make or accentuate points. This adds a human element that most film interviews never explore. After all it's the human element that makes what is seen on the screen truly screen interesting, when placed into context with the off camera interactions. Just an enjoyable segment to view.
wonderful interview, Rio Grande is one of my favorite movies, the chemistry between Duke and Maureen, the songs by The Sons of the Pioneers, the supporting actors, amazing
Behind the scenes in these great movies was always black and white to me. However your show has added color to these great behind the scenes stories. Thank you!
Another great interview, Rob. Interesting story telling from Claude and Patrick. I can't stop laughing from vision of John Wayne tip toeing across the cold floor to turn off the TV...priceless.
Great video. It is always a pleasure to listen to Patrick Wayne and Claude Jarman Jr. the stories and memories they share bring the westerns of the past to life. Great work Rob.
Two great people, Patrick Wayne and Claude Jarman Jr. telling stories about many great people. Thanks, Rob, for sharing this great interview. Thanks to you Rob I am in the middle of reading Mr. Jarman's book. It's a wonderful book.
Love these interesting stories from the people involved in these movies that remain relevant and interesting to this day. Thank you for your wonderful interviews.
Awesome interview, well done, thank you for sharing it over five months ago I watched and this time watching it again I wanted to thank you for this work, truly an honor to meet Patrick Wayne in Fort Worth at the John Wayne Experience located at the Historic Stock Yards, I have pictures to prove it and will cherish them forever.
Guessing you won't be riding with Claude's wife in the style of the ancient Romans though, will you Rob? That has to be one of the all time greatest stunts performed in any western, especially to think that Claude, Ben, and Dobe actually did it themselves. Although I seriously doubt that any of the actual ancient Romans ever had the nerve to try it. This episode of AWOW was a standout among standouts, a very special treat with Claude and Pat sharing those wonderful memories of Duke, Ford and those great classic films they appeared in. And that Overland Stage on display there at the Autry. Hmmm... I wonder if it could be the very same one Ransom Stoddard rode to Shinbone and was rudely dragged off of by that sagebrush ruffian, Liberty Valance.
I think that they are all good and the trilogy is wonderful but I think my favorite is "Fort Apache," probably because it had young John Agar, Henry Fonda, and beautiful Shirley Temple. Still I love the whole trilogy, especially Victor Mac and Maureen O'Hara.
Wow, these are Great interviews! You have been knocking it out of the park for a while now. Rob you are Becoming a Classic yourself. Your show will be a Reference for Western movie Historians for Many decades to come. Best Wishes from Montana M.H.
these kind of personal stories by the people involved are the best ways to use the internet and keep history alive

God Bless Patrick !!
I watch old westerns to see honesty, justice which is very rare these days. Hero's every one!
