Edey is clearly better than Clingan at the moment. He'a already proven that in the ncaa and combine. Long term, we don't know, but I'd put money on the two time ncaa player of the year. A generational college player.

A lot of guys who were actually that good in college turn into role players 99% of the time in the league at least currently but even u had guys like Laetner who was easily the best player in college yet it was his teammate Grant Hill who actually ended up thriving and becoming a star in the league

Because teams overvalue youth & athleticism. They underrate the more experienced, well polished players in terms of skill level . Unless they happen to be both highly skilled & jump out the gym athletic...That combo usually has you going top 5 , no doubt.
Unfortunately an insanely athletic 19 yr old freshman who averaged 5 ppg & 5 rpg is more likely to be drafted in 1st round than a less athletic 22 -23 yr old senior who averaged 18 to 20 ppg.
That's why every year - You'll get overlooked senior's like Brunson or Jokic who simply get overlooked because they're either a year or 2 older , or they don't have a 40 inch vertical leap.
It's actually quite brain dead - but mostly ALL teams treat 1st round picks as like a mega bucks lottery ticket , going against the odds to try & uncover the next home run like Giannis.
Very few teams actually use the draft intelligently to fill needs or roles , they'd rather gamble on a unknown potential than take a quantified , very good , already well established prospect I guess because they feel they're less moldable.
They look at the 18 to 19 yr Olds as like cookie dough they can shape into whatever they want. Which VERY rarely actually happens in a statistical sense.
My sixers got super lucky with undrafted Ricky council though this last season - He looks like sky is the limit for what he can develop into , very high top end athleticism as well. I am assuming he was simply overlooked because of very inefficient & inconsistent shooting percentages & up & down scoring averages in college. They Def got a diamond in the rough though in my opinion & he even had respectable shooting percentages in limited minutes.

Edey always had to manage his time and avoid foul trouble since he pretty much never came off the floor. So he had to pick & choose his shot blocks.

So, what i keep thinking....Edey has issues defending in NBA, but i kept thinking " Why is everyone saying Clingen is so much better?" As a Grizzlies fan, I have watched Steven Adams, and he has had difficulty against KAT and other bigs that are quick and can shoot 3's. However, with JJJ as teammate, Adams deficiencies were hidden a bit. He could contest 3's better, and if burned, JJJ was behind him to gaurd rim. The rebounding Edey or Adams give can be a huge factor, giving an average shooting team more opportunities. When Adams was asked about offensive rebounding, he said " well, it helps if you mates miss alot, giving him more opportunities. Lol. Will miss the big guy!

Personally I think the big key is that a player can have individual weaknesses that are exploitable and still contribute to a high-level team defense if they have at least one thing they can do really well to add value on that side of the ball. Steph Curry and Brook Lopez are two different players with big defensive weaknesses teams like to target on switches, but have still at different times contributed to high-level defenses that won championships.
Steph may be undersized, but has historically been very smart and quick and among the best in the league at getting steals, and the Warriors built their defenses in order to minimize his vulnerabilities at the point of attack and utilize him as a pesky weak side defender who can dig at the ball or pick off skip passes, so he can be a positive force within a team concept in spite of his size limitations.
Similarly, Brook Lopez is big and very slow, but has at times been a valuable rim protector later on in his career with the Bucks, and when the right pieces were around him, that defense was highly ranked. He's learned how to be smart about positioning himself in the zone drop and using his size to take away opportunities at the rim. He's also good at using his immense frame to block out offensive rebounders and let Giannis grab rebounds to start pushing in transition, and has been an important piece of several good defensive teams.
Obviously, both of these players also provide a lot of offensive value to justify keeping them on the court, and that's important too. But a good defensive scheme accounts for what your players can and can't do, and seeks to find the right mix of players who complement each other, leveraging each other's strengths and hiding their weaknesses. It's why I can't see Zach Edey as comparable to Boban, who isn't much of a shot blocker on top of being big and slow, and thus doesn't really have defensive utility anywhere, not to mention bad stamina that limits how much he can play. Edey isn't as good a shot blocker as Clingan, but he still is very good at it, and is also an absurd rebounder. And he should provide plenty of offensive value as a screener, roller, and offensive rebounder in addition to attacking mismatches in the post, so I expect him to be able to stay on the floor, and he can make it worth a team's while to support him properly.

Edey is just so much better than Clingan this should be no contest. People are just getting scared away by the lumbering big man arch type. A big man has not had his touch and feel around the basket since like Yao Ming. His post strength and repertoire is basically at Yao Ming level now and he has the potential to be a good shooter or at least won't hurt you on ft line. Question is just how to hide him on defense. People mistakenly think that they won't need to hide Clingan on defense which is wrong. Clingan will be as unplayable in the match ups that Edey is unplayable in. Edey is actually the stronger and more athletic player. If he is available at late first or early 2nd it would be really stupid not to take him. As for Clingan he would just be a hard pass for me.

They are scared of that archetype for a reason. Doesn’t fit in this NBA. Jokic pulls it off because he has a 200 basketball IQ and world class touch. To say Edey has Yao Ming type touch is laughable. Edey will be a 13 minute per night guy at best. Big bust

    • @georgesiew6203
      @georgesiew6203 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@devxplayerdevelopment Edey doesn't have the full set of counters like Yao does yet and the foot work is not as smooth but the guy's instinctive touch around the basket is there. Only someone who played in the post understand what the soft post touch is. It is that ability to put up a soft hook shot from any where in the paint under any condition. The foot work and greater variety of counters will come with time. The passing acumen and court awareness will also come with time. These things are possible to learn if you are a smart guy like Edey seems to be. The thing that won't change is the foot speed and that is up to good coaches to come up with schemes to hide.

@@devxplayerdevelopment most skilled my ass. He's a nice lil passer, but a literal cone defensively doesn't even protect the rim. Duncan is dominating joker on both sides of the ball so is everyone on the top 5 power forwards and center list. Because all those guys were great on both sides. Hakeem Olajuwon is giving joker 45+ and 20 with 5 blocks. Meanwhile joker would have 25 6 and 8 while getting shit on on the defensive side. Just because joker plays in a weak era for big man filled with undersized centers doesn't mean he's the most skilled.

(Sochan would have to come off the bench now). Then for the PG position, I'd luv them to get one via free agency, such as Darius Garland, Dejounte Murray, Derrick White, or Trae Young, or even a Malcolm Brogdon.

I think the NBA is trending more back towards size & defense slowly. But if this was 10 or 15 yrs ago no question Edey goes #1.
The NBA has just gotten obsessed with winning the lottery on inexperienced players with crazy athleticism. So much so , they dont take experienced & accomplished players because they believe they already know what they are. They'd rather take the gamble on a 18-19 yr old freshman whos not done anything yet just because hes athletic. Ive seen many teams make huge mistakes that way.
If I have a playoff team - and slightly later picks , Im taking a guy whos prepared for a role I need. If he becomes more than that GREAT! But Im not gambling on all my picks like NBA teams do now.
I'd like my Sixers to grab Edey whether that be at the 16th pick or a 2nd round pick. Behind Embiid he can step in and slowly be groomed & adjust to the league. Maybe a spot start here or there when Embiid is out. Embiid realistically shouldn't be playing anymore than 25-30 mpg regular season anyways. Hes only played roughly half of all his NBA games. He should realistically be splitting time with another back up or two....at least for regular season....Embiid is so damn fragile , then he flops on every play. Where Edey has been durable especially at his size , he could be the perfect backup to learn from Embiid.

Edey was dominant because there's no 3 second rule. He gets to sit under the rim all game. Andndiesnt have tonconstantly reposition and get out ofnthe lane. So a 7'5 big man is going to cook anyone in the low post. I think clingan will be a better nba player than a college player due to his skills and ability to play in various settings, where as edey needs a very specific team in order to even get in the floor consistently.

Edey better imo, but if you draft him you have to maximize him by playing thru him, however most NBA teams want to play thru their wings and guards. Obviously on the defensive end in the NBA you would want to play Edey off the floor by involving him in pick and roll actions and attacking him. Edey's perceived weakness is that he is slow footed because he is 300 pounds just bring him out to the perimeter and exploit. I still like Edey as a throw back big. He will crush super small teams if he can stay on the floor.

Post play is simply less valuable in the NBA, though, no? Bigger bodies and peskier defenders make it more at risk of turnovers, and it slows down the offense.
