I ran an art gallery for five years, and the worst customer was the art snob. The best customer was the one who stopped in front of a piece of art, caught their breath, and said, “I love this!” If your heart leaps when you see something, that’s your cue.
There is plenty of art out there at all price points. Go slowly, build up a collection over time, invest in pieces and artists that you love.

My husband and I have travelled extensively throughout our lives. We made a point several years ago that our “art” is photos we’ve taken on our journeys - some is colour, some black and white, some hung, some leaned up against walls - I love your off centre picture - I do things like that all the time. Command strips are your friend I say - just move the piece when you get bored

A huge amount of work goes into content creation, and especially on TH-cam, so it’s incredibly awesome that we have Valentina sharing this much, and so often. I’m also very grateful, but I love how infectiously passionate Valentina is about interior design. I look forward to every video that’s posted on this channel.

Shopping at Goodwill for art really is a thing. I don't find something often - but it's always worth looking. I found an original impressionist-style oil landscape once. I love the piece - it's of river birches and bluebells in the spring. It's by a female artist who taught art classes at the University of Chicago in the 1940s. It's hanging above my fireplace now. Not bad for $7. :)

There is a Goodwill not far from me that often has great photos and artwork. It’s in an older and more established area of the city, so I suspect some of the pieces come from homes when people move or pass away. And the price is always great!

I noticed the off centered piece in your bedroom right away and I love it. I said to myself “ that is so me” ! ❤️ I also love the negative space around my artwork, and I don’t fill every wall. My thing is to hang mostly original art, and I find most of it at my local thrift and consignment stores .

You know… Valentina, a couple years ago I was totally immersed in art and had artwork hanging on every freaking wall… then I hit the “ wall” ( no pun intended) and stopped making art and stripped all my art off the walls….. then I found YOU!! I have to thank you so much for your teachings…. I’m in the process of doing my fireplace wall black, and the rest of my house white and beige ( our house came completely tiled- brick color- so that’s basically the color I’m dealing with ) and adding more large creamy area rugs, I agree with you on the textures, the off- center art, the negative spaces, so many things you are teaching me as well…. I learn new ideas from every one of your videos- THANK YOU!!!!❤️

You being your Authentic Self and listening to your own Spirit Expression is vital! Every Human Being is their own Unique Soul yet interconnected with Others. Keep Being True to your Inner Voice and drawn to the visions and ideas that make you come Alive! When I’m not operating in that space of Authenticity, I’m left with the feeling of dishonoring my own True Self. 💗

I’ve recently turned a lot of family pics of Europe and my nature/architecture photos into black and whites, re-coloured pics and digitised watercolour prints in Photoshop. It’s been so much fun and I learnt a lot about printing, frame to mat to picture ratios and co-ordinating a gallery wall. You can turn small parts of an old, scanned, even slightly out of focus photo into large, extraordinary, unique artwork. Still want to make textured artwork and real watercolours.

One of my best friends hung my large piece over my headboard on an obvious angle, I love it. So many people tell me to straighten it, she has since passed on and it's always going to hang on an angle. I reminds me of her and brings a smile to my face every time I walk in my bedroom or even think about it. I never would have broken that rule and I'm so grateful she did!

The hanging of the picture in your bedroom is genius and everytime I look at it, I fall in love with it more and more. I love the idea of sometimes moving your art into different areas around your home, so you can feel the excitement of it anew. This was an artists dream of a video! Fantastic!

I found a big piece of black and off white mud cloth fabric with a very interesting horizontal pattern of repeating shapes and a primitive looking animal, at the thrift store for $2.00. My husband cut up a 2 x 4 into 2 x 2 inch square lengths for a frame. We basically made our own huge canvas art for under $10. It was going to be a placeholder but it’s staying put, I love it.
The only thing that gives me the willies is seeing a piece of art that is too wide for a wall, there isn’t enough breathing room on the sides, I like a minimum of 25% breathing room of art to wall. Oh, art that is hung too too high over furniture is bad too.
And your small art above your bed on one side, love it. I’ve done that over furniture for years, it’s intentionally perfect!

Thanks, V. I really enjoy going to goodwill and finding affordable framed pieces that are often numbered pieces, or originals. Sometimes, I just take out the artwork and put in my own. I might just cut a new mat and refresh the frame. It is a great way to have original, beautiful, affordable art.

Hello Valentine, thank you for igniting the creativity in me. I literally paused the video to retrieve a photo frame I have had for a while with a water fall picture and replaced it with rose quartz necklace which I truly love but don’t get to wear it as often as I should but didn’t want to part with. It’s now nicely placed on my kitchen counter not my dresser (kind of breaking the rules 😉). So satisfying and Thank You again for the inspiration and great content as usual.💕

Yes Yes YES! I was coveting one of these popular oversized abstract canvases in H.Goods, It had random amorphic spheres painted in neutral earth tones, to the tune of over $250. A few isles over to the clearance section I found the oversized "sparkle glitter" canvas for $25, SOLD! I took a quick snap shot of the one I really wanted and transformed my clearance find at home with paint I already had laying around. It came out so good, had a great time creating it, and I always get compliments on it. And yes, I was afraid of the scale as to this was my first time bringing in such a large piece, it has really transformed my bedroom and taken it to the next level. Don't be scared of the Mega Canvas...you'll wonder how your home lived before without it

First as we’ve had to place our bed off centre due to windows ensuite entry etc as well as having an aircon above our bed. Hi Valentina
I rarely add comments but wanted to thank you particularly for your comment to size up/scale up decor pieces. I am collecting some pieces for our new apartment currently being built... ready in a couple of months.. and I realised that while some of the decor pieces I had collected were gorgeous they were way too small. I am now on the hunt for fewer larger pieces that will be a better scale and have more impact. I've learned heaps watching you over the past few months. Thank you.

You are right about rushing to just get things done. My girlfriend has this problem, she got a bunch of furniture to just get the house furnished and it doesn’t look good, she hates it now. She said she just wants to get things done and doesn’t have the patience to wait and research and think etc… It’s such a good trait to learn to be patient and evaluate the space.

Your video just showed me that I'm not crazy for "mixing" some art styles, for mixing different colors and different kinds of frames... (as long as they all mixed, makes sense, of course)

1 - I really like the off-center art above your bed, even though I am all about balance.
2 - Do you know "Posterlounge"? I always buy art from them. I find them much more complete when it comes to options for each art work... so many!
They even have the option for a sticker canvas (all of their art is available for this) so you can stick it on top of an old one... I have 2 this way, for almost 1 year now, and it's amazing how well it sticks and how good the quality and colours are! One of them, I've peeled it off and the one beneath it was not damaged at all, neither was the sticker one (that I've reused on another surface and still with the same strong hold)!
    So... I'm buying more.

Great advice! Would you be willing to put together a video of tips and tricks on the technical part of art hanging? For instance, I have multiple small pieces in uniform size that I would like to hang in a very straight line. The part of the frame touching the wall is very thin, so there is no way to attach a command strip well. If I use the nail method, it’s hard to keep the frames from getting off center and leaning. I would love some advice!

    Great content, V.
You have more light on the off centered bedroom picture, than if it were centered.
I enjoy creating Gallery Walls using the one rule method: the largest piece is placed in the center of the wall. Other matched or unmatched pieces are placed around the anchor piece … by eye. You are looking for an overall balance. If the details of color, content or size begin to distract you, stand back and squint your eyes to see the overall look. Mix in children’s art, photos, paintings, botanicals. Repeat a pallet of up to three colors overall, with spots of variety mixed in.
Put pieces of painters’ tape on the spot where you will nail into the wall. The tape stays there, under your picture and prevents unnecessary wall damage when the nail is removed.

I agree that you can overdue it with art. It is okay to have blank spaces or different styles and frames. The idea is that as long as the artwork is good then let it speak for itself... For heavens sakes don't be predictable and use stuff that is mass produced or boring. I have found some very interesting pieces at thrift stores/yard sales. I also like to go to local art shows and I pick up pieces from local artists. This way I am supporting the artist and not the big chains(plus it is fun!). Plus you might find the most talked about piece in your home when people visit is the unique one that you purchased from a young up and coming artist who has a fresh perspective and often you can get their pieces for a better price. And if it happens to work with your decor then its a win win. Who knows--the investment could pay off down the road if they become famous. Just my two cents... 😊

What it did was create a long horizontal line where the top of the headboard met the bottom of the painting which goes across the whole room making it feel bigger. Also horizontal lines are more restful for a bedroom.

Hello Valentina. I have been watching your videos for a year and I love your style and have bought several home decor items and books that you reommend! We had our walls painted with Chantilly Lace last summer and love them! I agree with white space and through your style I have been leaning framed art on the mantle, bar, and kitchen counter. Thank you so very much for sharing your style ideas and linking the items below. I get so many compliments on my home and I tell them all about you. So, thank you V and we are all grateful for you. Love Jack and when your kids are a part of the videos.

Not art related but wondering if you could ever do a video series where you take a style of home and “modernize”. For example I have craftsman style so tons of classic trim and lots of rectangles and boxes. I suspect there’s lots of farm houses looking to do the same now too or industrial. I added a round white oak coffee table and light grey sofa which is softening up the built in shapes. I’m really enjoying your channel! ❤️

When I saw that offcentered art in your bedroom I wondered, I thought it was just an unfinished project or something. But now after your explaination I thought that was such a genious way to create a statement! Now that is the most inspirational thing for me in a while!😆

Love the art placement in your bedroom Valentina! I noticed it in your last video. I thought maybe Jack was worried about the picture falling on his head in the middle of the night. I'm from Cali so we think of these things lol

“Break the rules”. I felt relieved and excited. We did some renovations to our home, painted, and now I get to put my artwork and pictures up. This video gave me inspiration and excitement. Thanks!!!!

I had purchased several pierces of a “ famous “ artist’s works. Since my divorce, I went from a huge home to a small home and a totally different vibe.
So I am trying to figure out what to do…keep them , try to sell them, or store them and get what I think is really cool…

I always been a rule breaker!! Especially in my design. I had to drop out of interior design school because I just hated all the rules. Good to know them, but I don’t always want to use them! Thank you Valentina for the permission !!

Love this Valentina…so true what you are saying…you have the eye as I think I do and you cannot give that to someone. I do think you have helped many with your suggestions and given people the guts to do their own thing even if they do not consider themselves creative.

Yes!!! This is perfect! We are currently working on painting our interior of our new home and as we paint, I’m looking at art. As a recovering farmhouse (yeah I had a crap ton of worded signs!) and now new Scandi rustic modern is my style so my art collection is ZERO! Thank you for sharing! Im so excited for the code!! My questions are how to balance the white space and the art wall in a room especially a small room like a powder room or a hallway with smaller walls along with two story walls

Wow I never thought of buying framed canvas and just painting over it! Seems a little intimidating but such a good idea when you have certain colors in mind that you just cannot find!

Inspiring ideas! I want to let my 5-year-old granddaughter go crazy with a canvas and paint!
About the off-center art: no need to defend your decision to anyone. Keep in mind that when you choose to open your home to public viewing by thousands of people on social media, It's no longer a private space. As your channel grows, you invite more criticism (both positive and negative). Thank you for being vulnerable and letting us in.

I take art that is framed from thrift stores and I use paint to add my own touch. I highlight areas of the picture such as the sky, or grass to add interest. I also add things, like a tire swing. It makes me feel more personable and it is more affordable for me.

Don't forget that sometimes you just need to reframe the art to give it a new life. I have never done this, but apparently you can get amazing art from university student exhibitions, definitely worth looking into.

I'm an artist and I appreciate your comments. People need to buy as much original art as possible. Etsy is a great place to find unique, budget friendly pieces. I went to Desenio and checked out their frames. I'm curious what you think about the hanging mechanism on the back? I've done custom framing for years and the hangers on these frames are a nightmare to hang straight. What is your solution to that? I've added new hardware to a lot of frames I've purchased in stores that seems flimsy or hard to use. However, the wood on the back is extremely narrow and makes that a challenge. Please share your honest thoughts. Thanks.
