6:28 Haha! Well, there’s a turn up! I’ve often thought about that Sony ad car illustration - I used to love drawing cars as a boy and it really struck a chord at the time, quite obsessed by it. In fact, I studied technical illustration at art college after leaving school - all airbrush and Rotring pens - no Apple Macs back then :-D I didn’t expect to see that weird green car again - although I would never have remembered it was for a Sony ad. So thanks for that trip down memory lane. Why am I watching this video? A Rega P1 or P2 has been on the wish list for yonks now, I had an eighties Technics belt-drive that went to the crusher, a colleague then gave me his seventies Technics turntable and that soon followed! Have always loved Rega gear, currently have a nice pair of KEFs ready and waiting…

Great overview Phil. I would think the amp and speakers are pretty scalable in terms of adding a better source at some stage. I had an io and recently upgraded to an Exposure that is 4x the price, however there are elements of the io sound I prefer. Thanks for the ongoing great content.

Hi Phil your right about the Internet there is so much confusing stuff if someone is getting into Hifi for the first time, I recently helped a friend get a new turntable he hadn't had one for 20 years so was really struggling with what to buy.

It would be very hard ... very hard indeed to get a better sounding startup system for this for the money.
And unless you are an Audio geek, virtually impossible ... This is a fantastic and superb quality startup system for those getting into vinyl ... and want bang for their bucks.

This seems to be a great value entry point into high fidelity vinyl playback but it's depressing how the average consumer would think of this basic system as being too expensive but would think nothing of spending the cost of this system on a new phone.

I recently bought a pair of Kytes for my little office system (Bluesound node, Rega Brio-R). I auditioned them alongside B&W 607 S2 and the Rega bettered the B&W quite easily. Those resin cases are ugly as hell and more fragile than they look, but otherwise I've not a bad word to say against them. Lovely rhythm, warm and a little dark, with a decently wide soundstage and clarity. Very enjoyable speakers for sure. My main system is a Rega Planar 8, Naim digital sources and amps/pres etc, going into Proac speakers and the difference between that and the Brio-R with Kytes is not as big as it should be given the gulf in price. Rega are great at balancing sound quality with incredible value for money as far as I have always been able to see.

This Rega system looks fantastic. I envy the person who's just about to get their first system - there is nothing like that first 'hifi' experience. I absolutely loved my Dual 505, NAD3020 and AR18s speakers from the early 1980s - the turntable finally fell apart and the speaker baffles rotted away! Still have the 3020 but only as a keepsake.

Very similar to my first proper system in 86 although I went Rotel RA820BX. Still have them and the Dual was much better when I swapped out the Ortofon for a Goldring GX1010. I never loved my AR18BX’s so eventually in 96 bought Royd Minstrels which I still love. Out of curiosity I bought a used NAD C320 and it’s very similar to the Rotel.

I put together a system for my grandson of the Revolver Black Ash turntable with the Linn Basic arm with K5 cartridge & stylus with my spare Monitor Audio 9 Speakers with a Creed 40/40 Integrated amp & it's his pride & joy at the moment until he really understands Hi fi & then is the time to Upgrade his system.. which I should imagine will be grandads job.. but at the moment I think the same way as you ..

Any advice on a good cd player for pairing with this system?

    Interesting order of importance:
    Turntable deck
    Stylus
    Amplifier
    Speakers
Rega is very scarce in US, unfotunately.

As someone else has commented, it's an interesting order of importance you placed on the components. I come from a background of 80s hifi, where I was told to spend around half my budget on speakers! Maybe this doesn't apply with modern speakers? Or was the advice ever really true?

    • @cheshireaudio
      @cheshireaudio  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Certainly in the 70s a lot of Importance was put on the speakers ... in the early 80s people started to realise that the source was much more important... speakers make the biggest differences, but for fundamental improvements it’s all down to the source

I have an ungodly amount of bass distortion using the BRIO….. I have tried everything. When i connect to turntable any volume past 1/4 distorts like mad, using phono input. Any help is appreciated.

Are these speakers better than the Peachtree M25 speakers?

I wish that set had been available in 1983 when I bought an equivalent set-up of all Sony. It was very good and lasted seventeen years.
I have owned a Rega P3 [bought in about year 2000], since sold to a friend, and currently use a Rega Fono 2D, which is gem. I use it as an analogue device. I was given a Project Debut III at New Year plus about eight hundred LPs. I put a new OM 55E stylus on the turntable.
If I had not got what I have this would make a very nice last system for me!
    Best wishes from George

I love Rega amps and turntables. The speakers are the bottleneck of the system (they should have delivered a substantially better performing and better produced pair and upped the price of the system, it would have benefited the potential "upgrade path"), as a whole, used for what it is intended to, it's okay .. for Rega it's a smart competitive thing todo, considering the evolving market. It's a way to outreach. No point in upgrading tho with these speakers. Sold separately I would stay away. But as a whole for what it is, it's a clean solution. It's going to be trustworthy and delivery fine.

I own Klipsch RP-600m. I can’t stand looking at them because they’re made in China. Terrible mistake on my behalf as I was going to get either Focal made in France. I just auditioned the Kyte’s and have to say they do quite well on detail. My REL (UK made) will complement them.

I understand the innate aversion to chinese goods , but we have to acknowledge that they're here to stay , and more and more western companies are going to move their manufacturing there . The quality of chinese-made goods is getting better and better all the time . If your Klipsch speakers were made in America or Europe , they'd be three times the price . A lot of "American" electronics are badge-engineered now , and full of chinese components anyway . BTW , I bought a pair of Kytes a few months ago , and returned them because of the overall cheap look and feel . You can see carpet underlay through the rear port . Keep your RP-600s and just enjoy the music

I've always liked Rega products, having owned their "clamshell" amp and CD player in the past, as well as the original Kyte speakers (until one of my my Chinchillas decided to try to try to eat them!) Currently I only own a P1+, but wish I'd bought the standartd P1 as Ive since purchased an amp with a far superior phono stage (unfortunately the Rega's isn't defeatable)
