- Sidney Crosby is my all time favourite player and I consider myself incredibly lucky to have been able to watch him over the years. 3 cups with the Pens, all the personal hardware and as a Canadian, the Golden goal is one I'll never forget. But, maybe the most impressive thing about Crosby on the ice, for me, is the consistency. So, with Crosby's assist on Rickard Rakell's goal against the New York Rangers the other night, Crosby officially clinched his 18th career point per game season of his 18 seasons in the NHL. This is second only to the great one Wayne Gretzky who had 19. With that, I began to reminisce on the incredible career the Pittsburgh Penguins captain, Sidney Crosby has had and so in today's NHL hockey video, I wanted to share one of my favourite Crosby stories that you maybe have never heard!

That hit me, right in the feels.
You don't have to be a Pens fan to appreciate the way Crosby has played as well as the way he has carried himself as an ambassador for the game.

The first time Sid won the cup, he came to our children's hospital while my young son was admitted. We all were asked to go to a common room and told that there would be no media as Sid did not want a circus, but we were welcome to take any pictures we wanted. My son was the first one to meet him because we were right beside him in the room. I got to hear him talk to his "handlers" and hospital staff. He had a CRAZY busy schedule that day, and this was not an advertised stop. When he was told that he only needed to say hi and shake some kids hands, he pushed back at a very young age and said quietly, "I am here for them and I want to take as much time as they want. I am not in any hurry." My son's name is Van...and he was just 3. It was Sid's birthday and I couldnt help myself, I said to him, "Sid the Kid meet Van the man." He got a chuckle. He was gentle, genuinely caring and mature way beyond his years. I learned 2 things that day...first was that he is a genuine, humble, selfless and caring person. Second is that depending on the camera angle, I am just fat enough to completely cover the stanley cup in a picture...like it was never there. My now 15 year old son reminds me of that fact.

Another angle to this story that shows how much class Sid has is the fact that each player who won the Stanley Cup gets one day with it to celebrate. Often they’ll throw a parade in their small town to celebrate it, take it to the cottage or go boating with it to spend a day with friends and family, but Sid wanted to share it with as many people as possible. Leaving that childrens hospital he asked “what else should we do with it” but it seems like he meant “who else can we share this with” . So much class and dignity it’s almost indescribable
Imagine if he didn't miss nearly two years in his prime because of concussions... One of the greatest of alltime in my opinion.
You really don't need to say IMO here, it's hardly even subjective anymore. Sid is an all time great, and I will gladly accept this as a FACT!
Absolutely. I’m a flyers fan and I’ve always appreciated Crosby he’s a class act one of a kind player. Those concussions years I felt awful for him. The game is always better when he is playing. Easily a top 10 all time! I hope he plays another 5 years at least.

I totally agree!!
People criticize him for being boring and a whiner but the dude has been nothing but a solid player and ambassador to the game his entire career. No drama, no scandals, no BS just pure gold. Check out the story of him hanging out with some kid he met on an outdoor ring one day in Tremblant. Sid dragged his GF along when the kid wanted to show Sid the rink indoor rink he works at. Sid’s the real deal and all Canadians should be proud
He gave a kid I coached his all star jersey somewhere around 2012 after the boys father died in a skiing accident, no fanfare or news stories, just a good deed by a genuinely good man. I know some guys that know him well and he really is that guy.
As a Flyers fan, Crosby is a class act. What a legend
As a Pens fan I got a lot of respect for Philly.. I been to Philly when the Pens were in town.. Met a lot of good Flyer fans.. But at the end of the day it’s just a game..

It's a shame that Pittsburgh has been struggling all season because Sidney has been absolutely incredible. It's actually fucking nuts that he can still put out the minutes, the goals, the assists, and his overall playmaking ability as well as he can this late in his career. Sid could hang it up soon, or keep playing for another 10 years the way he's playing now. We're truly lucky to get to see his career and all that he's contributed to the sport over the last 18 years.
Hextall kinda really fucked things with a massive majority of the moves he's made. Definitely closing the window for this team way faster than it should have. He has no direction of the team and when the front office is complete lost it trickles down to the staff and players being lost too

As a Veteran this just made me cry like a baby. I’ve been a Crosby fan since I got into hockey in 2009. I am a Bruins fan but Crosby is my favorite. Such a class act!
Look at the faces of those seniors! Absolutely beautiful moment for sure choked me up.
I've heard this story numerous times and it never gets old and is always emotional. This kid is the epitome of a role model. He also has his little Penguins foundation where he outfits kids head to toe with hockey equipment, he also has his own suite at PPG Paint Arena where he gives free tickets to disadvantaged kids/charitable groups. I am sooo glad he was drafted and hopefully plays his entire career for the Penguins! (My favorite Pro Hockey Team)!
Hope he doesn't outfit the kids heat to toe himself though or that be suspect, bruhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I don’t think people realize how YOUNG he is in life. In hockey, he’s on his last handful of seasons but for him to be 29 and to do what he did in this story is a true testament of his character. Sid is a legend and I feel spoiled to have gotten to watch him, Bergeron, Ovechkin and many more over the course of their entire careers

the ability not to get flustered, or make or a joke, or just barge in the room anyway, and just totally understand the most valuable thing he could have possibly offered that man, which requires at least a little understanding of blindness and a total ability to step out of self importance, and think oh yeah, there are a bunch of habs teams on the cup that this guy will know and i can let him feel the exact name of his favourite player. Extremely selfless. Amazing Sid.
Just like others have said, to even think of running the man's hand over his hero's name shows the care and compassion that Sid has for others. His way of celebrating was to share it with people and he wanted *everybody* to be involved.

I've always have been a Crosby fan and I can't understand why some people hate on him so much. He's a great person that has been great for the sport of hockey.
I remember the NHL strike during 2004 - 2005, Crosby was a stand up guy trying to get it settled. He stood with players from other teams that he didn't necessarily get along with on the ice. But what was most important was to move forward and keep the game going. That was more important than "on-ice " differences. I'll always remember him for that.

As a disabled person and life long pens fan (growing up alongside Sid's career) Crosby is one of my Heros. He is just always doing incredible stuff for disabled folk be it due to cancer, accidents, age or whatever. It's never to serve himself good PR either It's always genuine and he thinks of thinks that I know for a fact 99% of people just wouldn't such as finding and tracing Rocket's name. Something so simply but so many just wouldn't have the understanding or compassion on such a deep level to think of it.
I read this story before, but I still found it an emotional story. Very classy

He's one of my favorite players of all time, and just goes to show you how great he is and how humble he is. I grew up in Boston my whole life and I have always been a Penguins fan since I was a little kid.

"A hockey player visited me today. Nice looking boy, gave me a hug" Said my elderly mother while i was visiting her at the Veterans hospital in Halifax. Wait a sec.... I knew Sid was doing his visits that day. I told her that was a big deal. Back to her story about how bad the food was :)

We need to appreciate guys like him and Stammer while they're still playing. Despite suffering through very traumatic injuries, they were able to come back like it never happened. That's not luck or skill. That's HARD ass work and determination.

It definitely tugged at my feels and no surprise at all coming from one of the humblest greatest hockey role models on and off the ice of all time!! I always said there is something abt Crosby that makes him outstanding.The same as I felt abt LeMieux and Gretzky.Just clean cut humble Canadian boys that know how to win but as team players always.

Crosby has been the consummate professional his whole career. There has never been a single negative media piece about him. He’s a hockey player before anything.
I really can’t think of any other top-end professional athlete who has been so ultra consistent with his off-ice and on-ice image.
One year later and this, and Sid, are aging beautifully.

Crosby grew up a habs fan. He actually hoped the habs would get the pick that drafted him. But instead, Habs got #5 which ended up being Carey Price.

Being a pens fan my whole life, Sid is one of the main reasons I love hockey so much! Unreal player and amazing person off the ice as well
As a Habs fan, I sometimes hated Crosby because thats what you have do with great players playing agaisnt your team but I will never forget Sid's first shootout goal and how high that water bottle flew. I however think we all have to respect his love of the game, part of me wish we had the chance to see him wear the blue blanc rouge.

Admittedly, I am a big Sidney Crosby fan. I deeply admire his style of play and incredible skill. I have 2 Sidney Crosby stories from what I believe are very credible sources: 1. A lady from Sidney's hometown in Nova Scotia where a childrens' hockey camp is held in the summers. Her son played ice hockey there and she witnessed this herself. Sidney was spending his allotted time with the young hockey players on the ice. Chatting, doing photos with them, giving signatures, etc. Sidney's assistants/entourage/handlers then pointed out the time and told Sidney that they have to go. (I don't know if it was a media thing next, a business thing, awaiting travel itinerary), Sidney was like "NO, I am busy with the children". He had an idea or heart feeling that the children had not had their proper fulfilled time with Sidney, yet. I guess this went on a few times.... Sidney's stance was "THIS is the important thing.... These children are the most important thing right now. Beautiful story. The way that my source, a fellow Canadian that I was working with, in central Canada, told it to me, seemed totally LEGIT. I was moved. I love kids. And hockey. ❤ 2nd story. Teammates Sidney Crosby and Evgeny Malkin were both playing for their respective teams in the Winter Olympics, which were held in Russia that year. Canada won the Gold medal that year, over Sweden (Silver), and Russia, unfortunately, underperformed that year, despite the contests being played in their homeland. Then, later, as the preparations were beginning for the upcoming season, the first instance when Crosby and Malkin were in their Penguins locker room together, Crosby immediately and sincerely said to Malkin, something to the effect of "Evgeny, I am SO sorry that you were not able to get the Gold medal in your homeland". Story Shared to me from a believable Russian hockey source/friend. I am an "average Joe", I am not able to mix with real "players", but I believe both these sources, and these 2 stories seem really consistent with the Stanley Cup story. Hopefully, I can meet Sid one day. I deeply appreciate his talent and how he has represented Canadian hockey in the NHL and International events. ❤ Sorry for the length of my comment, guys. The fact that his attitude in the first season in the league with the world on his shoulders is the only negative thing anyone can say about him speaks VOLUMES.

My favorite Sid story is him asking Pascal Dupuis to open his garage door one night after dinner because he came in that way in the afternoon when it was open.
