@ryanolson2308 to an extent yes. But if you are a 3rd or 4th starter or a bench player. You are still.in the 26 (or 28) man roster. So is not like they can just magically bench all the starting lineup and field a minor league team. There is still a 26 man roster who is competitive . And if you are a batter, you don't want to give up bad at bats as that's a very bad habit right before playoffs
The situation with the Mets and Braves for the doubleheader (while the Dbacks are watching hoping for a sweep of either side) is sort of like that situation in the NFL playoff seeding in 2021 when the Raiders and Chargers met for their last game where they could just sit back and tie each other to get into the playoffs together while the Steelers had to watch and hope for either of them to win outright to get in themselves.
If only they knew the double header was happening and had 3 chances against a team with nothing to play for to make the double header irrelevant for them… oh wait, they did
@@SuperCatacataagreed. If you look at the Padres roster that beat them, they let their fate slip out of their own hands, had total control over their own situation. This is going to sound crazy, but I honestly think I have a bit more confidence in Megill than Severino. Misses bats more reliably and is less prone to allowing HRs-and thus his FIP is nearly a run lower, and he’s arguably been better lately. Severino had a sub-10% K-BB% for most of the year, which is awful, and it’s not much higher than that now (he’s finally gotten his K rate above 20%). Plus, I wonder if the innings are starting to catch up to him a little. On the other hand, Severino might be better equipped to manage contact quality than Megill, so there’s that. Maybe I’ll be proven wrong tomorrow, or maybe they’ll both suck, but I think Mendoza made the right call going with Megill in the first game.
Manfred should hav pushed the start of the playoffs back a day to make up for botching the hurricane situation, should hav played 2 gms Tuesday in Atlanta n 1 gm Wednesday
might not have been an option due to tv broadcast rights. not saying that IS the case, but could have been a major factor. either way, manfred screwed both the mets and braves with his decision.

Off topic, but MLB needs to end the regular season around Labor Day, 8 teams make the playoffs (3 division winners and 1 wildcard), and each series is best of 7. To play 162 games, make the playoffs, and get eliminated by losing 2 games in the first round or 3 games in the second round is ludicrous.
I've been saying this: Regular season should end on September 1st. 130 games; include a "play-in" 3 game series [one each for AL & NL] before the wildcard
If double header is split, after the wild card round all 4 division series matchups could be own division v. own division-Padres vs. Dodgers (nl west) Mets vs. Phillies (nl east) Orioles vs. Yankees (al east) Tigers vs. Guardians (al central) will never see that again with new playoff format! WOW! Just let that sink in! How is nobody talking about this?
For GM David Stearns’ inaugural season with the Mets, many pundits didn’t give this squad a positive prognosis of making the playoffs let alone getting far in the postseason. Eliminating the Braves would be akin to winning the World Series.
If you're mad about the sign stealing scandal, there's not really anyone to root for in that series since the Tigers manager was the 2017 Astros manager...
Game 1 winners won’t forfeit but they will manage their bench as much as possible. Prediction: Game 1 losers’ starting pitcher in game 2 will throw a perfect game.
Sportsmanship issue here for the D-Backs. Mets and Braves won’t meet until the NLCS. For that to happen you would need a simultaneous collapse of the Dodgers, the Padres, the Phillies and the Brewers. Therefore, there is no real need for both teams to sweep. No matter how rival they are, managers will see that as their cool heads will prevail. Therefore, winners of the first game will have a great incentive to rest players, especially pitchers, for the second game because of the late night travel to either Milwaukee or San Diego, where they play game 1 of the WCS. Do you really think that if the Mets win game 1, that they will send one of their top 3 starters on the mount. As a fan, we all like this drama, but at the fair-play level I don’t like it all.
