Wow Wildlife Moments from the Deep Waters Near Kingman Reef | Nautilus Live

  • ‘We can see most of the major taxa here!’
    Our first expedition of 2023 has revealed treasure after treasure of deep sea wildlife viewing! Catch up with some of our favorite moments from ROV Hercules’ footage from exploring ancient seamounts in US waters north of Kingman Reef and Palmyra Atoll. How many of the species can you name?
    Check out an acorn worm leaving trails of digested sediment as it travels along the seafloor, a Hymenaster slime star tumbling along tangled with a sea urchin, and a narcomedusa jellyfish likely to be yet another undescribed species from the deep. Along the seamount the team has also documented stunning biodiverse outcrops of many different corals (including plexaurids, primnoids, Chrysogorgia sp, mushrooms, bamboos, and more) as well as the colorful neighbors who utilize this habitat like bright pink squat lobsters, purple Enypniastes sea cucumbers. Were you watching live when we spotted the solitary hydroid with the triple layers of tentacles and the fan-favorite “grumpy faced” Chaunacops sp. anglerfish? Relive each moment with this compilation.
    This expedition brings the Ocean Exploration Trust team to explore waters around the US territories of Kingman Reef & Palmyra Atoll, one of the most biodiverse regions of the Central Pacific. Diving our remotely operated vehicles along ancient seamounts estimated to be 80-120 million years old, these deep sea communities are being investigated and explored for the first time by human eyes. Increasing the baseline of knowledge about geological history and habitat patterns is especially important because the region is currently nominated for consideration as a National Marine Sanctuary, a process seeking public input.

    This is fascinating! They almost look alien. It's so cool that they live just below us.
    Also it's oddly wholesome so hear scientists laugh and joke around casually

    The work that these people do is incredible. There's simply no way that we'd find out about these unique and rare creatures without the assistance of people who clearly love what they do.
    Thanks for sharing, the world is full of wonder, and so much yet to discover!

    I love watching these videos and the live ones. They make me want to go back to school and become a marine biologist. Unfortunately, I am a bit too old so I just watch and try to name the organisms before lthe team does and I am getting pretty good. 😉 I guess I can call it home schooling. Lol

    I wish you added timestamps with names of the species in the description so we'd get chapters. It'd make it much easier to search for more information. I see the species are in the description too, but chapters would make it more clear. Still obviously incredible videos, love to see these creatures. Feels pretty incredible to get these clear views of organisms from so deep under the surface.

    This is amazing footage and I cannot express how much I love the enthusiastic and informative commentary and banter! One question, as a videographer on land, what kind of lighting are you sporting down here? At these depths I imagine it's pretty pitch dark normally, but it looks almost as lit up as a coral reef. Do these creatures, who I imagine have never experienced light before, react to it, or don't they have the senses? Does it scare some creatures, and attract others, so that we are for ever doomed to have a whole shadow biosphere of creatures we will never meet in the deep, who flee at the first sense of a rov with photons? :)

    Normally it's pitch black right? So how does the light from the EV affect these creatures if at all?

    • @AGDinCA
      @AGDinCA 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Most of the time, the light seems to have little effect on the organisms. However, certain fish, like the cutthroat eels, are definitely affected. They sometimes appear to lose depth perception and frequently run into obstacles or nose dive into the sea floor. Fear not, though; they are not injured. They just appear to be a bit shaken up and then go right back to the business of being fish. 👍

    • @coeurlregina128
      @coeurlregina128 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This was actually a question that puzzled scientists for a while! Turns out a lot of deep sea fish have specialized eyes that let them either 1) pick out the silhouettes of other creatures above them against the lighter background water, or 2) see the glow of bioluminescent organisms around them in the truly pitch black depths

    7:21 another trait on male chaunacops sexual dimorphism is they have really big nostrils compare to their own body. That's because their sole purpose is to find a female to mate with.
