Sloth here ! In the great words of a friend who destroyed me in sf6 , one back Roy is worth more than 1000 switch ups. That’s what style means. Yeah sure vague. But when you break it down it’s simple , one clean perfect trick is worth more than a 3 pc sloppy switch up. Style counts.
I think a lot of style has to do with where you come from too. For example, I grew up in the Bay Area and most people from the bay were influenced by Julio, Minton, Reduta, Guerrero, Shima, Lennon, BJ, Riggle, Burke. All in the very early years of blading mid to late 90s. Now though I think social media plays a big part of people’s choices of style.
When Sagona and DL did a soyale. That's style. You can line up 1000 skaters doing the same trick and it won't look as good as those 2. Style is the mystery. How do they make it look so good? No one quite knows. But we recognize the difference. It's like that DL parallel fish. Someone else could do that same trick. But wouldn't have the same aesthetic. Not the photogenic nature of what makes the photo pleasing.
I think it came up a bit on your convo, but to me style is a mostly a combination of intention and control. The intention to do something + the control to make it happen allows you to imprint a fragment of your personality in whatever do and convey it to the rest. When I see something authentic in someone else's skating that resonates with me, I consider that good style.
does a trick have to "look good" to be executed "fullý"..? or is "sloppý", "barelý", or ehem... after 10 tries.. enough..? in mý opinion "just" the trick is not enough. stýle is like the arangement and topping of food.. when no one sees it its ok. but on video..
