To anybody reading these comments.... Last feb. after watching Brighton's videos I went to la Paz, stayed on the malecon, and it is amazing!!! very family friendly, not a party town. I went to Los Cabos, Cabo San Lucas, Todo Santos and Mexico City while I was down there and none of them compared to la Paz... 3 mi of boardwalk!!! Beautiful beaches, and so many restaurants it was hard to choose... I even hooked up with Brighton and his wife for drinks.... Here's how it affected me: I've been looking for real estate there ever since....
Hey William. Best of luck on the real estate journey. Looks like you've properly shopped around for the right town. I'm going to CDMX for the first time in probably 20 years to do a little exploring. Not looking to leave La Paz, but just exploring my new home country ;-)

I've got a few more recorded (that I'm editing this summer) and I'm about to spend 3 weeks on the mainland making videos. So I'll be covering Puerto Vallarta, Guadalajara, Querétaro and CDMX soon too!
Brother I'm staying at Tiki Todd's while he is in burning man. My friends and I drove from San Francisco to this magical place. I have traveled the world and never seen anything remotely close to as beautiful as this town. I am a 61 year old contractor in San Francisco but I will be relocating here as soon as I can figure out how to run my business from here. The most beautiful warm and living community I have ever encountered. I am flying home in a couple of days and I cannot bear the sadness I will feeling that day. LaPaz is heaven on earth!🙏🏖🍹🎣👨⚕️
Tiki Todd is a burner? I wouldn’t have guessed it. Can you be a building inspector? Someone who can tell gringos if their homes meet US standards? Or who oversees construction to make sure it meets standards?
Great video Brighton, this is very helpful. I saw that you did a video back in Oct 21 with a realtor about neighborhoods, which was targeted to people buying in La Paz, I was wondering if you've done one that focuses on long-term rentals in various communities? If not, maybe this is a good future video :-)
Ron - I'm working on a rentals video. I need to shoot an intro and outro to make the pieces all fit together. But I uploaded it privately so you can see what I have so far. I welcome feedback: th-cam.com/video/gs3eEZx7tIo/w-d-xo.html
Another great video. Appreciate it greatly. We are making our plans to come visit the area in December. This video convinces us that we should spend half our time there.
I went to la Paz in May this year....couple of weeks and I fell in love with it. I didn't rent a car so i walked a lot! I stayed 6 bloks away from downtown..3 bloks from the Malecon. (Coco Studios). Lovely area. I do like the neighborhood you live in....do you know prices of little houses for long term rent i that area? I just found your channel....need to investigate it❤
Good to see you can still "teleport" yourself back n forth. I'm still working (and lobbying) to see La Paz, likely Oct or Nov. Pleeeeeease keep those informative videos coming. D of P n D . PS weird how you seem to know where all the ice cream shops are 😁
You too will know where all the ice cream shops are. And you'll have to decide if you are on "Team La Fuente" or "Team Michoacana." Next week I teleport to mainland Mexico!
Brighton Wow, that's a great and informative video. We have similar stores and shopping in Puerto Vallarta, but it's 45 min away. La Paz looks really nice and spread out, too. can't wait to visit someday
Another great video.. Very informative and again I find myself wanting to visit there. I am a little concerned about the Heat, so perhaps you can tell me when the coolest months are?? or perhaps if there is a rainy season? Thanks so much for everything you share!
Definitely check it out. The summers are hot, but not too humid until the "rainy season" around Sept / October. But it only rains about 6" per year in La Paz. So there's not much rain. Lots of expats are only part-timers living in the US during the summer (or just traveling) and then Mexico from November thru May-ish.

We’re in our 60s and live in Esterito, does that make us hipster? Trendy for the first time in our lives! We walk the Malecón every morning and it’s a wonderful way to start the day. Just FYI Malecón is proncounced male-CON not male-CONE. Love your videos, keep up the good work.
Yup - y'all are hipsters. It's a mindset, not an age ;-) But I do have to push back on the pronunciation. O in Spanish is almost always a long-O like in "cone." My Mexican friends pronounce it Male-CONE. Most gringos pronounce it Male-con, but I'm trusting the locals ;-)
Claire Browne, !!HOLA!! Rent prices reasonable?!? My wife and I are about a year away and you described how my wife wants to start her day. Great video. Thanks B
Whoa…loved the video and the areas you mentioned. I am planning a 6 mo stay somewhere in the area and this was very helpful. Being from Los Angeles, it seems like desert/beach vibe would be comfortable. 💖 (Don’t need the big box stores, though…I don’t even go to them here in the US. 😂
Is La Paz a good alternative for snowbirds and expat retirees who don't want either a heavy touristy area or mega metropolis Mexican city, including a heavy beach obsessed population but who want a quiet small city with the usual amenities and health services and you don't need a car? Where are the quiet housing areas near the amenities such as in Esterito or Downtown? How is the climate during the year?
I'm glad you mentioned CFE because we need to get our electricity account set up when we get to La Paz. Fortunately it looks like the office is about 2 1/2 blocks from our house. Watching this video got me quite pumped up for coming down this month. We've been stressing about getting our residency visa sorted out and getting ready to go so this reminded me that it's all worth while =)
I hope to meet you this winter at a Sunday happy hour. You're gonna love living in La Paz! CFE now requires you to have a RFC number, so you'll need to get that first. I think when you get your residency, you get a CURP number, and you can then turn that into a RFC number by visiting an office on the Malecon.
I have family 👪 there. It's beautiful. Last time I went, was in 91. I was wondering about the Aramburo store. Alot more sidewalks and paved streets. It's really grown. Wow, Centenario, was kinda out in a boonies place, back in the day. Do they still have Bing, ice cream or Danesa ice cream shops?

It's hot right now. Like locals are complaining hot. 104 today I think. That's unusual. Normally all summer highs in the high 90s but cools off at night. It's hot June thru October probably. A number of folks take the late summer to travel back to the States, Europe, mainland Mexico, etc.
Thanks! Would you be willing to allow me to use your music in a future video? I could give you credit and link to your channel in the description. Thanks for considering it.
Another great video Brighton! Our house is in Frac. Paraiso del Sol, by the Lay Express on Blvd Santa Rosa, off of Pino Payas. We may be the only gringos who live in that area! LOL!
Thanks Phillip. That's definitely not gringolandia over there! But it's close to Bereta (or fave Italian hole in the wall) and Claro Fish Jr (our fave fish taco hole in the wall.)
Have you been to Mulege? I am assuming probably yes. If so, how does it compare to La Paz? We are coming to La Paz on Feb 8th 2023 for 5 dyas and then to Cabo for another 5. I am looking at real estate in Mulege in a little community called The Orchard.
We've only driven thru. Mulege is small (4,000 people vs 250,000 in La Paz.) It's much more green than La Paz. But the Orchard is near the river (which is why it's green) and I thought a lot of areas near the river flooded last year. It's definitely a risk. But the 3 places you mentioned are all very different ;-)
Lots of good options. I hope others chime in. Estrella for shrimp tacos. Bismarkcito, Harker, Oliva al mare, 612 for great drinks and small plates, Tacortoria…. My favorite is off the Malecon. Tatanka. Hard to find, but it’s a hidden gem. I’ll have a video about it soon.

When I was in la Paz a few months ago I ate there more than any other place breakfast is good there too....Claro fish jr is a couple blocks north of there and has great fish tacos
The aquifer is being depleted. I know that the water agency recently stopped issuing new development permits because of the water supply. But I've also heard that those permits were recently issued. And the mayor published a warning about purchasing lots in a very large new development stating that they have no water rights. There are a couple of private desalination plants in La Paz (and dozens in Cabo) so I anticipate that desal plants will be built to accommodate future developments. I'd love to make a video about this, but I need to find an expert who will tell the truth on camera...
Hi Brighton. . Your video piqued my interest in La Paz as a quieter alternative to the Cabos , Vallarta, mega cities, etc. I'd like to see more about the city's infrastructure, medical services, transportation, etc. in relation to older folks who went to live near amenities, etc. As expats and snowbirds. In particular the popular neighborhoods (you mention Esterito, Fide Paz).
Thanks - glad you're considering La Paz. Here's a bit about the buses: th-cam.com/video/YtNWO5N3H2Q/w-d-xo.html. I'm hoping to do more medical videos. I'm currently in the states, but headed south next month (not sure if I'll make it to La Paz though...)
La Paz looks like. Are there areas which are good for expats to avoid? Or what about living out of town but still within a 20min drive of the city? I'm not a big fan of urban or even suburban areas and like 'space' ideally with trees for shade and not the typical urban sounds of people, vehicles and the hustle and bustle of a city. I'm a country boy at heart and would like live simply.
I’ve heard the east side of town is the part to avoid. You can definitely live outside of La Paz and he jn the middle of nowhere. San Pedro is really small and I’ve met gringos who live there. Also just random places outside the city. Maybe harder to find, but they are out there!
Brighton, we're driving down from Wisconsin...yes fellow cheesheads lol...my question for you is it safer to drive to Topolobampo and take the ferry over or is it safer to enter via Mexicali and drive down Baja California? Thanks Magda and Brian
Go Badgers! I would drive down the peninsula for 2 reasons: 1) on the mainland you need to buy a permit to drive your car. Not needed on the peninsula. It’s called a TIP. 2) Topolobampo is in Sinaloa state. And that state can be a bit dangerous right now. They had a flare up of violence last month. So the US state department says “don’t go there.”
What about having a scooter… I don’t hear people talk about the cost of import … I like that la Paz tho .. simple life with the beach & coffee shop and market places .. looking for 500 to 600 … month I’m a single woman very little Spanish but I do have the app 😂💙😂 would love to volunteer at one of the clinics … thx you
Awesome video man. Im from NY, I am building a home in Palmira area. You should do a video of the north of La Paz leading to Tecolote and Balandra. We love it there and are looking to almost retire there as well.
I can’t wait to go back Mi tierra Bella ❤️ I’d go to the elites near the old 18 de Marzo elementary school grounds and in the best churro stand in front of La Coppel! All around the centro. I love the old town, up by the Mercado Madero and around. I’ll have freshly squeezed juice en el a mercado Madero.
I've had some great fresh squeezed juice in the market! And I'll be looking out for that churro stand. My wife loves churros and our favorite stand closed :-( You come from a gorgeous place.
Sadly we need to take the highway from our place to downtown. Some people ride their bikes, but it's not super safe. There is a bus that runs every hour and costs about 50 cents. I've taken that a couple times. 70's in December and high 90's in July.
Great info. Super thorough. We will keep this in mind when we head there in a few months. But please try to pronounce some of the names correctly, especially when you are "local"
Esterito is on the edge of downtown, known to be a little risky, drug addicts, robberies. This video is El Centro… McFishers, CFE, Telmex, Ommsapa, etc….
I don't attend church, but I understand there are a few Christian churches where English is spoken. You can ask on the Facebook Group "Loco La Paz Expats."
@@BearInThePhillipines You just made me think of a great video! I might talk about dating Mexicans. Do you follow Tangerine Travels? It's a bit different because they are young, but they have some fun videos about the differences ;-)

@@AlmostRetiredinMexico According to Wikipedia, at one time it was the biggest restaurant chain in the USA. Who knew? (I didn't). And I totally forgot about Baskin-Robbins (31 flavors).
I should do a video about that! There is an international airport in La Paz, but there are only a few international flights per week. Most people fly in and out of Cabo (2.5 hours away) because flights are plentiful and usually less expensive.
The Malecon is beautiful but watch out for the local police. We had a rental car and got pulled over 3 times and had to pay a bribe once. The roads are terrible and full of large potholes. The city does not take care of many local streets which are in paved and get pretty messy when it rains. Nice place to visit, but would never live there after my experience. Take public transportation or you will be a tourist target!
Sorry you had that experience. I wonder if they target the rental cars. You ate totally right about the streets. This is definitely not the US when it comes to roads.
Yes - we are all nostalgic for the past. But La Paz isn't over run with chains. There is one McDonalds, one Pizza Hut, one KFC. But there is a Home Depot, Sams Club and Walmart - and no city needs multiples of those - or even one!
I was going to ask if there are Barrios in La Paz that Gringos should avoid. Seems ironic now after seeing the news & level of violence that has hit Canadian cities.
I can't win. If I pronounce it like a gringo (con) then the Mexican's point out my mispronunciation. But if I pronounce it like a Mexican, then the gringos tell me I'm mispronouncing it! So I typically go with how it's pronounced in Spanish. 🙄

I've not been to Buzos. I'll have to give it a try. Claro Fish Jr is great - I love their coconut shrimp tacos and margaritas!
@Mike Dickson. I love Arkansa. Sometimes you just gotta have southern food - even if you're in Mexico. th-cam.com/users/shortsrSX7fRRI2sM
How bad is the drought situation in Baja del Sur and La Paz for the city and farming??
Go Badgers!
I would drive down the peninsula for 2 reasons:
1) on the mainland you need to buy a permit to drive your car. Not needed on the peninsula. It’s called a TIP.
2) Topolobampo is in Sinaloa state. And that state can be a bit dangerous right now. They had a flare up of violence last month. So the US state department says “don’t go there.”
@Almost Retired in Mexico Thanks Brighton! BT
@uncleb7238 - thank you for the Margaritas!
What about having a scooter… I don’t hear people talk about the cost of import … I like that la Paz tho .. simple life with the beach & coffee shop and market places .. looking for 500 to 600 … month I’m a single woman very little
Spanish but I do have the app 😂💙😂 would love to volunteer at one of the clinics … thx you
Awesome video man. Im from NY, I am building a home in Palmira area. You should do a video of the north of La Paz leading to Tecolote and Balandra. We love it there and are looking to almost retire there as well.
Congrats on your new home! I don't know much about that area, but it's included in a rental market video that I'm trying to finish up.
You rocks, Im new and I love your videos, Im a big fan of Baja Im from Mexico City but some day ill be “sudcaliforniano”
I really like your videos. Have you ever been to el zarape restaurant it is very very Mexican and delicious right on the malecon beside the Peking
Can you ride a bike here from your place? Or take public bus? What is weather like year round?
Sadly we need to take the highway from our place to downtown. Some people ride their bikes, but it's not super safe. There is a bus that runs every hour and costs about 50 cents. I've taken that a couple times. 70's in December and high 90's in July.
Great info. Super thorough. We will keep this in mind when we head there in a few months. But please try to pronounce some of the names correctly, especially when you are "local"
Help me out - what did I mispronounce?
Thank you!
You’re welcome Theresa
Esterito is on the edge of downtown, known to be a little risky, drug addicts, robberies. This video is El Centro… McFishers, CFE, Telmex, Ommsapa, etc….
Have you made videos about the best places to eat?
I'm working on one about the best tacos, and I also just created a playlist of my food in La Paz videos: th-cam.com/video/bRdTtwnhGP8/w-d-xo.html
When is the next meet and great?
This Sunday 6:30 at Mezquite Verde in El Centenario. Then back downtown the following Sunday.
It looks very nice. I live in Player del Carmen. I'm thinking of moving to La Paz. Is there a English speaking Christian church there
I don't attend church, but I understand there are a few Christian churches where English is spoken. You can ask on the Facebook Group "Loco La Paz Expats."
Great video
Thanks for the visit
Thank you
Happy to share Mark
Interesante!
Gracias Lindylee!
What kind of car are you driving with PUSH BUMPER?
It's a RAV4 that came with that. I'm not sure what the previous owner was thinking...
@@AlmostRetiredinMexico very cool
Thank you for making these videos
Looking to retire and find girlfriend
But only some little spanish
@@BearInThePhillipines You just made me think of a great video! I might talk about dating Mexicans. Do you follow Tangerine Travels? It's a bit different because they are young, but they have some fun videos about the differences ;-)
@@AlmostRetiredinMexico is tangerine travel the guy in asia? Ya I think dating info with language barrier good topic. Are you based in lapaz? Title of video could be " would you get laid or robbed more in Mexico " ok just kidding. But curious how easy to date
@@AlmostRetiredinMexico another topic of you have not covered it is bringing your own car down. Registration do you even need to worry about registration etc....how safe.....etc
"32 Sabores"? (32 Flavors). Howard Johnson only had 28. :)
I thought HoJo was a hotel chain. I never even knew about ice cream.
@@AlmostRetiredinMexico According to Wikipedia, at one time it was the biggest restaurant chain in the USA. Who knew? (I didn't). And I totally forgot about Baskin-Robbins (31 flavors).
Are the 2 dogs included in the sale😂
I’ve got 2 new ones right now for you :-)
Who do I contact to find a short term rental in that area?
For a couple weeks to a month, I suggest going with Airbnb.
Hi, how far from an airport is La Paz? Thanks
I miss the old Mexico before all the big American chains moved in. 😟
Yes - we are all nostalgic for the past. But La Paz isn't over run with chains. There is one McDonalds, one Pizza Hut, one KFC. But there is a Home Depot, Sams Club and Walmart - and no city needs multiples of those - or even one!
And a stand alone Thrifty's Ice Cream stand!
Hard to find apartments there
I’m working on a rentals video. Any tips for finding a place?
❤️❤️❤️❤️🏖🏖🏖🥂🥂
Show us cheaper single person apartments etc
Yes - I’m planning on doing another rental video focusing on places people found on their own.
I was going to ask if there are Barrios in La Paz that Gringos should avoid. Seems ironic now after seeing the news & level of violence that has hit Canadian cities.
I've heard the areas to the east are the sketchiest, but I've never been over there.
Haven't the large stores effectively destroyed the small merchant Mexican markets?
Not so much. I think many people only shop the small markets. Maybe people without cars? And most people shop those small markets for simple things.
@@AlmostRetiredinMexico Do they get deliveries or do they walk home with a folding shopping cart?
@dovygoodguy1296 Anything is possible. I know folks who walk to the bigger stores, then Uber home with their bags.
The term Gringo is generally considered derogatory my most Latinos that use it. Wouldn't it be better to use a better term or name than "Gringo"?
I struggle with this. What’s a good term to use? All the options seem to have baggage: expat, American, gringo, foreigner. I’m open to suggestions.
Just finished watching the hills have eyes, but it seems like in mx The hills have gringos 😂
Yes - there's gringos in them there hills.
Wow he talks like Ina Garten with facial
Expression
That's gotta be the most interesting comparison I've ever heard!
It’s infuriating to see someone’s face in the video the whole time instead of the scenery.
Thanks for your thoughts
dude its not mal a cone its pronouced mal e con
I can't win. If I pronounce it like a gringo (con) then the Mexican's point out my mispronunciation. But if I pronounce it like a Mexican, then the gringos tell me I'm mispronouncing it! So I typically go with how it's pronounced in Spanish. 🙄
Kind of disappointed. Just discovered this channel looking for insight but didn't find what I wanted. What's the "insider views"? All you offered was sh*t everyone knows as one who is also almost retired in Mexico as well. Everything you covered is on Google lol Every winter from Canada I live at San Jose Del Cabo. Looking to rent a condo long term in La Paz. Recommendations best agencies best deals and where to find them id renting La Paz? #Subscribed
Check out Loco La Paz Expats on FB. You'll find decent deals on rentals there. I'm working on a rental video.
