  • The Unter den Linden was located within the Soviet zone of occupation of Berlin, and after 1949 was part of the communist German Democratic Republic. In 1960 the repaired Neue Wache was reopened as a Memorial to the Victims of Fascism and Militarism. In 1969, the 20th anniversary of the GDR, a glass prism structure with an eternal flame was placed in center of the hall. The remains of the unknown soldier and of an unknown concentration camp victim from World War II were enshrined in the building.
After German reunification, the Neue Wache was again rededicated in 1993, as the "Central Memorial of the Federal Republic of Germany for the Victims of War and Tyranny." The GDR memorial piece was removed and replaced by an enlarged version of Käthe Kollwitz's sculpture Mother with her Dead Son. This sculpture is directly under the oculus, and so is exposed to the rain, snow and cold of the Berlin climate, symbolising the suffering of civilians during World War II.

Very well done. I got to see this as young American Soldier in 1982. I always thought the Commies looked pretty Sharp. You can't tell very well in this video, but they Soldiers were balancing the weapons in the palms of their hands, unsupported by their sholders. I don't read German, but I believe this is the tumb of the Unknown Soldiers from WWII, for both Soviet and German Unknown Soldiers.

This is a Prussian tradition going all the way back to the 2nd Reich and has not changed in the German army,
It was done by the Prussians, the Nazis, the East Germans and now modern Germany,
With practically No difference besides different types of marching. With the bundeswehr no longer using the goosestep.

I lived in Germany when my dad was in the Air Force, and I was there when I was visiting Berlin in 5th grade during the 1989-1990 school year. I was with my class and while watching the guard change, I stood right in front of where the guards were to stand in front of the Tomb. As the soldiers got closer to me, my class chaperone realized I was in the way and yanked me out of the way just in time to avoid a kick in the face :) Good times. We got the changing on video and you can see the camera moving around while he was yanking me out of the way :D

BS. The Reichstag wasn't "torn down" it was destroyed during WW2 and had to be completly rebuilt at some parts.

Not bad for something looking like what the best being the Russian may have taught their commie alley. Those goose steps seems to be more Russian style than those of the vintage German goose-stepping
