    Brittany this is so refreshing and affirming to hear. The gym absolutely sucks, and not just for plus-sized people. As someone who is perceived as thin, I also feel those exact same things when I enter a gym. I’m not the most athletic person and I feel overwhelmingly self-conscious in that environment. It’s so unwelcoming and uncomfortable for anyone who isn’t “fit.” And yes it’s fucking BORING!!! No one talks about that!! Why the FUCK would I walk on a treadmill and stare at the same wall for an hour when I could go out and ride a bike or hike somewhere interesting?? I love being active but those things appeal to me way more than lifting some hunks of metal in a sweaty gym. Preach bitch.

      as a scrawny ass twink who's always been insecure about his body, and as someone who also is afraid of men yet horny and also self-conscious at the gym and most of the time bored out of my mind, it's still worth it for the endorphins. but there's definitely so many other ways to exercise, and have fun doing it, and not have to be vulnerable about your body, like idk do calisthenics at home, it'll probably get you the same results

      Idk after a month I stopped caring completely. Guys only care about gains, at least in my gym, and I never saw anyone paying me any attention. We're all in this together to better ourselves. I like listening to youtube or music, or just nothing at all during training, it's nice to unwind and just stare at the wall sometimes tbh

    I did a debate with my bio class this year and somehow we got on the topic of the gym. I mentioned that the gym can be a scary place for plus sized people and the two skinny people really said “why would it be a scary place. We support them in their fitness journey” LIKE HELLO?! Do they not know what anxiety is?!

    • @catherinegibbons7884
      @catherinegibbons7884 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      You’re reading wayyyy into it and creating a problem where there was none. Most people that workout were once at a starting place too. It’s not condescending? It’s genuine support. The reason why you might feel excluded is because your excluding yourself. Don’t be afraid to go bc the voices in your head think other ppl are judging you. Most ppl at the gym are supportive bc you’re improving your health and that’s a lot of effort. Stay positive!

    • @itsrebeccalynn5470
      @itsrebeccalynn5470 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      @@catherinegibbons7884 what am I reading into lmao. I just shared from personal experience. Sorry but people TELLING ME fatphobic shit and STARING at me in the gym is not in my head. But thanks for attempting to invalidate something you have 0 idea about!! Also never said condescending so don’t put words in my mouth. Regardless why does some stranger need to provide “genuine support” idk you leave me tf alone and stay out my business at the gym. Mind you the gym is not the first or last place plus size people experience this. I’ve literally had strangers match with me on dating apps or dm me to lose weight with no reason. Also thin peoples “starting place” is not assumed to be unhealthy like a plus size persons “starting place” just by their body. So really not comparable. You’re giving grace to a huge portion of terrible people as opposed to believing and respecting the real stories of fat people. So kindly idc what you think about it.

    • @bee4590
      @bee4590 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      i know youre trying to be kind but more than once people have been cancelled for taking pictures of people in the gym for the SOLE purpose of ridicule. there was a model(?) who took a picture of a NAKED stranger to make fun of her, and literally like a week ago a woman on tiktok went viral for taking a picture of a woman at the gym to say "she clearly had a BBL, how disgusting" :/ like. the fear is valid unfortunately, people DO judge and tiktok has rotted people's brains into thinking its socially acceptable to take videos of strangers simply because its not illegal to do so @@catherinegibbons7884

    5:45 Brittany going from Equinox to Equioxx is too funny. Equine means horse and Brittany somehow stumbled on Equioxx which is a horse drug (basically horse ibuprofen), with the side effects that cause ulcers. Which has nothing to do with the sun.

    OMG GIRL I had literally the exact same gym experience you were describing. My apartment has a great, small gym and I went ONCE, walked in the treadmill, and immediately went into a panicked state. I had to leave and just sobbed. It was just my bf and like two other dudes in there, literally nobody made me feel unwelcome, but I just felt so out of place and so unfamiliar with all the equipment. I've never had an actually bad gym experience, I just like, hate the gym so much?? But I always tell myself I should go?? I just feel like a failure not being able to be confident at the gym. It's an impossible cycle to break out of

    brit, i used to go to th gym because i was trying to attain my perfect body. i used to dread it so much. once i decided that it’s good for my body to sweat and looked at the gym as “me” time, i began enjoying it a lot more. i don’t try to diet or anything, and i’ve found that portion control is very helpful. everything in moderation. i suggest you go to the gym to make sure you’re able to move well and get some sweat going and to feel something physical, instead of trying to attain a certain physique. i hope that helps u and anyone reading this

    I feel like what a lot of people get wrong about exercise is that they think it needs to be work or a punishment. If you hate the gym its ok to not go to the gym! Go on a walk, play sand volleyball with friends, do yoga. Find something you wanna do and makes you feel good otherwise its not sustainable.

    Brittany, I feel so bad that you genuinely feel that way about going to the gym. Tbh, even for me being like a huge health nut and pro fitness, I still get gym anxiety and feel hella fucking judged ☠️ No fault of anyone but my own literally just something I feel, plus seeing hella hot guys and overthinking about their stares, so I can sympathize. After a while, I started to be purposely delusional and just think all the stares is someone trying to fuck and it honestly helps me get through 🥴 But I really do think we as a society should change up and flip the fitness community in a positive way or sumn. Cause going the gym has literally saved my life mentally and physically 😭

    When you mentioned the American work schedule not being sustainable or realistic, it made me think about how outdated the 40 hour work week is. It was built for men who had a stay at home wife to keep things running behind the scenes. I think it's unfair that we have kept the 40 hour work week with both men and women working. I think the full time work week should be cut in half

    Madame president, as a mid size girlie who has struggled with her weight and body image for most of my life (I’m 33) I promise you that isn’t all there is to exercise. Look into “joyful movement” which is basically any form of movement or exercise that you actually enjoy and doesn’t feel like a chore. It can be anything! the biggest thing that changed my mindset was “I workout because I love my body, not because I hate it”. I go now to a gym called f45 because it’s all classes and that’s what works for me. I still have fupa, I’m still mid sized with jiggly legs and chafing but I feel so good. I’m not working out just to be thin or skinny, but because I want to be strong and healthy. Hope you find your joyful movement!

    13:27 jumping in to say that another possible cause for an emotional response during physical activity can be anxiety. I am no stranger to panic attacks and sometimes my body can’t tell the difference of breathing hard from physical exertion or hyperventilation because of panic. I also just wanna say that I’m a thin person and while I completely acknowledge that people in a gym setting definitely treat me better than they do a fat person, I have started avoiding gyms because I feel like I don’t belong. Gym culture fucking sucks. I’ve definitely cried in a gym multiple times due to both anxiety and not feeling like I belong there. I’ve also left really soon after getting there because I didn’t know how to use some equipment and some gym bros literally made fun of me to my face 🥲
