    I will build cross dowel jigs for $100 US. $75 will go to me for material, labor and shipping. $25 will go to support Nate and his TH-cam Channel.
    I also offer the option for people to drop by my shop to make their own at no cost, but would highly encourage a $25 donation to Nate. Making a jig usually takes 3 - 4 hours and you will learn a lot in the process.
    Please understand that I'll have to order the parts before I can build them which could take a couple of weeks. I'm also working with Nate to produce a short video to show more detail on how to use the jigs.
    If you are interested in a jig you can contact me at: lex_rooker@yahoo.com

    Lex is brilliant with the preciseness and craftsmanship. Those cross dowels are like a lock. I first came across something similar when putting together and taking apart my IKEA bed frame.

    I contacted Lex and ordered both the cross dowel jig, and the c chanel jig. I originally built out my galley in my 2010 transit connect for a wider water tank then I ended up buying so have about 4 inches of wasted space and built out of 1" pine tongue and groove. Now I will have a wider area between my couch and the galley (my layout is like yours) that I might be able to add that 20ltr compressor fridge under my bed and be able to pull it out into the van's "walkway", not out the back door lol. So will be a cool projects to redo the galley and bed out of a lighter weight wood! And like you said it is a skill that you will be able to carry over into other projects! Thanks

    Nate I have been watching your videos for a while now and I have to say, Wow. You make me want to get a youtube channel. My van build is so far different from yours. I have minimized the use of wood in my van. I wish I could convey to you and the rest of the world, There are many better materials to build with. For example my bed is made with steel and is adjustable for level, and you could store your surf board underneath it like you have on yours. I store a full size solar panel under the bed, and still have room for 8 milk crates full of storage. I have lived in my an for over a year now and love it. Thanks for the great videos, Happy trails!

      My build is also very different - almost no wood. My material of choice is aluminum L-channel and bars. I am amazed by how much space you free up when you give up wood. And it's not that expensive - not like 80/20, which several builders like to use. I do appreciate and love the craftsmanship associated with wood - beautiful cabinets, etc. I would love to use the cross dowel technique for building house furniture. But considering the weight and volume advantages of aluminum, it's my preference. At this point, I feel like I can build almost anything using very simple tools and fasteners. I do have a TH-cam channel, but I always offer the caveat that everything kind of looks like it was done by someone doing it for the first time - because I am. I love the craftsmanship of many of the wood builds I see, but unfortunately, that's not me.

    This experience with Lex was invaluable - you were fortunate to have crossed paths with him.
    When I was growing up (late 50s, early 60s) my dad was sort of a "shade tree" mechanic and builder - his day job was building roads for the city. I was deeply interested in how he did everything, but he was reluctant to allow use of his tools (long story), and was not the best teacher. However, my interest never waned, and I went on to become a woodworker (off & on) for the rest of my life. I added a few other skills and hobbies along the way, but everything built on creating something.
    Today, much of society doesn't really take the time to appreciate what it takes to make something by hand. My dad used to gripe about it constantly, which got on my nerves. But he was SO right. Folks need to slow down, learn a craft, and pass it on to a younger person.
    BTW Nate, if you get a chance, take a look at Bruce Parks channel. He's built out the interior of a mini van that's a really good example of what a highly skilled person can create. Very inspiring!

    • @lexrooker7334
      @lexrooker7334 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Don, I grew up in the same environment as you. No one wanted to share what they knew. I'm the opposite. At 70 my working life is over. Now it's time to share what I've learned over the last 7 decades.

    • @donwyates
      @donwyates 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lexrooker7334 Why do you suppose they did not want to share their knowledge? To me, it's just a part of who I am, that if someone is receptive, I feel almost an obligation to do so. Fortunately my daughter is hooked on crafts of all kinds, so I feel like my passion has been passed on to the next generation. The thing is, I didn't have to try very hard to get her to work with her hands - maybe it's partially genetic?

    • @lexrooker7334
      @lexrooker7334 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@donwyates Same reason people don't generally share their knowledge today. Most people think that keeping knowledge to themselves makes them more valuable as you must come to them if you need something related to their specialty. What it really does is make them unpromotable because if they move out of their current position we loose their knowledge. Then they complain that no one appreciates them and they can't understand why they don't get raises like their more forthcoming coworkers.

    I’m a builder of all sorts of things and could never get my kids to do anything. Now they’re leaving the house and realize how much they’ve missed...
    I’m glad you appreciate what you’ve learned from him and put it to good use later. On a side note, pocket holes are a great and fast way to build strong things as well. Less versatility in undoing and redoing over and over, but how many times do you want to take things appart ? Safe travels

    • @lexrooker7334
      @lexrooker7334 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I've had little issues like my backup camera failing and the side door having electrical contact problems. When I take it to the dealer they tell me they can do nothing until Winnebago or whoever built it removes the cabinetry. I can remove the cabinets in a few minutes and we're good to go. We took Nate's build apart at least a dozen times as we made small modifications. Didn't have to rebuild everything, just made the necessary changes. Very difficult to do with pocket holes. Pocket holes are also not very strong in 1/2" plywood or MFD. In my experience cross dowels are stronger and hold up better in the "rolling earthquake" environment of a camper van.

    I have a question about the aluminum u-channel that is attached to the floor. The cross-holes: What kind of screws go into the plywood? If they are wood screws, why are the two holes back-to-back? Do screws go in both sides? Do you drill out the plywood and use a machine screw and a nut or pem-nut or something attached? Awesome video, I'd love to hear anything else that Lex has to say.

    • @bobeastrise
      @bobeastrise 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      If you look closely at the C-channel in the above photo, you’ll see holes drilled into the sides of the channel. These holes go all the way through both sides of the channel. When we’re happy with the placement of the vertical piece we drive a 3⁄4” long #6 screw through one side of the C-channel, through the wood, and out the other side of the channel. The vertical piece of wood is now captured in place. It can’t move up or down, left or right, and it’s right on the centerline.

    Did you think to put glue on the screws so they will not back out?

    • @lexrooker7334
      @lexrooker7334 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Trust me, these screws don't come loose. It is one of the strongest construction methods available. It also allows you to easily disassemble parts for maintenance or changes. If Nate decides to run an electrical wire to the back for a USB charge port, he can have the whole bed assembly apart in about 20 minutes, run the cables, and have everything back together in a jiffy. Glue wouldn't add any strength to the joint but would make disassembly a major problem.

      Lex Rooker I tried using those before too Assemble some pre-fabricated furniture in those types of connections always seem to crumble under the pressure of Torking them down.Thanks for the reply

      @@raymonddriggers These are not the IKEA style 'twist lock' connectors. These use machine screws and they won't come apart if you use plywood or a solid wood like pine, maple, alder, & etc. It is true that if you use MDF, it can crumble as it is made of sawdust mixed with a binder which will crumble under pressure or if it gets the least bit damp. I think Nate will attest to torking down hard (multiple times) on all the screws in his build with no sign of weakness or crumbling. He even used an impact screw gun and the joints only got tighter.

    Will the jig work on other thicknesses as well? Or is it just for 1/2 inch only?

    • @ElementLife
      @ElementLife  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lex's jig is specifically for 1/2 inch plywood. It does have some flexibility and you can adjust it accordingly. You can also find jigs for 3/4 inch plywood online.

    • @lexrooker7334
      @lexrooker7334 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      As Nate said, my Jig is specifically for 1/2" wood. I also make them for 5/8" and 3/4" as they can be made for any thickness of wood you want - even up to 2"x4"s. Ninety percent of my work is 1/2" on van builds, but I do use 3/4" solid wood like ash or maple for trim. Woodpecker.com makes a universal cross-dowel jig but it starts at 3/4" and goes up. It will not do 1/2" ply wood

    Is a cross dowel joint stronger than a kregs joint?

    • @lexrooker7334
      @lexrooker7334 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, much stronger. A Kreg Jig joint is usually glued which means it can't be taken apart. In most cases you are making an "end grain" joint which is weak to begin with. If you bend the joint, the Kreg screws will pull out of the plywood. Using cross dowels, the plywood and joint are under high compression actively pulling the joint together. The plywood itself would fail before the joint.

      @@lexrooker7334 thanks for the explanation Lex! I'm not much of a metal worker but I do mess around with wood. Any idea how you can score a jig like that guy has? Something that you can actually buy or does it have to be made DIY?

      @@peterdods425 I'm the guy. I made the cross dowel jig for use with 1/2" plywood. Woodpeckers makes a Universal Cross Dowel Jig but it is only for 3/4" plywood and larger. Sablon also makes a very nice Cross Dowel Jig but again, only for 3/4" wood. Both are in the $100 range. If Nate gets enough interest I'm willing to make a batch. If you're in the So California area you can also drop by my home and make one yourself.
