Very informative, thank u for bringing your experiences up. Series 60 12.7 pre egr is best choice in my case. Very cheap to maintain and still get 7 mpg.
A Series 60 14 liter with an EGR delete is better still. Delete the EGR put the right set of gears in the diffs, and you can get better fuel economy and the same durability.
Spec the truck with gears so that when you are at highway speeds you are in the torque band. Torque comes on around 920 rpm and starts dying off right around 1400 rpm.
I have a '15 Cascadia with a 505/1750 engine, DT12 transmission, 2.54.1 finals and 11R22.5 tires. With this set up I'm still running higher highway engine RPMs at 65 and 70.
My next truck will be a Peterbilt 579 with X15 Performance Series engine 13 or 18 speed transmission 3.25 or 3.08 finals and low profile tires. I don't believe that you need 3.36 finals with a Performance Series engine to pull tanks and vans at or lower than 36287 kg.
Working my way there to have you guys look at my truck. Hopefully I can be there by Wednesday-Thursday. About to trade it but I have put almost $45k in repairs and I paid $50k for two years ago. I actually like the truck and hope you guys can help me with this constant engine light. Dealers keep throwing parts at it and it’s very expensive to play that game.
There’s a lot of simple things that would really improve the reliability and serviceability of the DD engines like doing away with plastic coolant lines and plastic oil pickup tubes. Those are big problems. Lots of plastic quick connects that leak and break. Putting the air compressor anywhere’s but where it’s at would be nice along with the quantity control valve that’s a pain in the ass on those short hood cascadia trucks. Our dd deleted trucks really do great.
I was driving a 2016 Freightliner Glider with a Series 60 Detroit Governed at 68 MPH .. I got the best MPG at 68 MPH running slower made milage do down .. Then I drove a 2020 with DD-15 would definatley get better MPG at slower speeds..
well i am going back to being an owner/operator again after being retired for 10 years i am only 55 and still pretty healthy i am actively looking for a truck and what i am finding out is that i am going to have to settle with a freight shaker because of the availability of parts downtime they are a hell of a lot cheaper to maintain then the rest of the rest of the outer truck brands dd15 i had a 60 series in my last truck grate engines 18 speed all axle disk breaks apu only going to 3 states light load fucking gooooood pay fuel card 30 percent off the gallon from this co very hard fo get in with them i have friends in low places ha ha so i hope its not as bad as i have been hearing from everyone we will see thanks for all the info on the newer engines everyone needs that info to make a better informed truck buying prosess i think be good Larry B
Love my DD15 (2019) 650k the only thing that's gone wrong with it is the high pressure fuel pump imploded and it cost $7k to fix but it's up and running good again. My Volvo (2015) with the D13 was the biggest POS almost caused me to go bankrupt. And I put .20¢ a mile into my maintenance account.
@@dell7054 Since your buying a used truck definitely immediately start with .15¢ a mile in a separate account you only touch for big breakdowns. Pull all your normal services out of your own pocket, make sure you got a good accounting service that dedicates it's business totruck Drivers I use ATBS. you need to learn how to service your own truck (grease, change oil and fuel filters,prime fuel system) you'll save tons of money doing it yourself and it's your truck so you'll make sure to do it right. Make sure you have at least $5k after you buy your truck. To many drivers out here buy a truck have a couple of simple breakdowns and they're up shits creek. By a nice socket/wrench set like a $200-400 one but a heavy duty plug kit buy an air hose to fill up your tires with a glad hand attachment. Learn how to blow dual tires back on the rim. Knowledge is power. The more you can do by yourself the more time and money you'll save.
The DD-15 has less Torque at Higher RPM's because the ECM fuel curve is written that way .. to force drivers to keep the RPM's down for better fuel Economy .. A simple Flash on the computer and give it more fuel at higher RPM's and a DD-15 can make more power at Higher RPM's too ..
A few years ago I was reading Advertisments for the PACAR Engines used a Cast Iron Alloy Formula that made the engine lighter .. stronger and my reistant from damage from overheating..

Ash cleaning is cleaning your DPF's (diesel particulate filter's) cleaned in your 1-box every 300k miles, I believe that is the recommended milage from Detroit. However, if you always idel, you should get them cleaned way sooner.
I have a 60 series that went 1.4 million miles before needing a rebuild. I have a DD15 with under 900k needing to be rebuilt. The 60 series is a third of the price to rebuild of the DD15. The 60 series is in a 379 Pete and got better fuel mileage and pulled better than the DD15 in the Cascadia.
To me it seems the only thing Detroit on the DD engines is the name. It is a Mercedes engine to the core. They bought into Detroit for the name and dealer network.The DDs We have give good service as long as the plastic oil pickup tubes don’t break or the o rings suck air and ruin them. We have 2 nice trucks with low mileage blown engines now from broken plastic oil pickup tube. My picks in order would be c15 cat ,12.7 Detroit ,14L Detroit Cummins n14,DD 13-15.
I got a DDT 466 International motor that will not start I bought it I use ether to start it up and I got it back to the shop let it sit for a day try to start it the next day and it wouldn't start what do I do what do you think the problem is
The DD13 block is cast in Germany at the Mercedes Benz engine casting plant. The outside of the block ha a waffle texture to it. Here in North America these engines get caked with clay, mud, and other debris. This causes the engines to become a heat sink and tend lead to engine failures that at a higher rate than the DD15 or DD16. The DD15 and DD16 engines are built on the same block. The DD16 is a stroker version of the DD15.
I have a hard time paying 40k for an inframe. I was going to do it myself even though I've never done a diesel. Any recommendations to watch it for on a 2010 epa07/10 no def, DD15. Or recommended parts to replace when the motor is open?
I also think I need a heater core because I saw white smoke coming from the vents! Could this have something to do with coolant in the bottom of reservoir?

I would trouble shoot the speed sensor on back of transmission. Possible cause could be faulty sensor, bad circuit or loose tone wheel on transmisson output shaft
Ash cleaning is recommended every 300k miles. Includes cleaning, DPF, DOC inspecting and if needed clean EGR cooler, clean DPF differential sensor and hardware, EGR differential sensor and intake sensor for soot build up.

Replace the oil pump and pick up tubes for the oil pump at 600-650,000 i have a dd15 no problem bough it with 305 it has 715,000 no problem other than they leak oil from the air compressor and fuel pump seals and the dpf system but i Delete it ..
@@macho1657 I never had any DPF problems not yet but I definitely keep up with my maintenance just replaced the DEF filter, I think it's all about doing the preventative maintenance no need to delete the ATS maybe the older trucks but 2017 and up no problems with the ATS system.
You are wrong about the older engines being tougher. I remember when if you got 400,000 out of an engine you were doing great. I'm talking 300 and 400 Cummins. Or the 318 Detroit. That DD 15 is a tough engine.1,000,000 miles if it is taken care of.
Kilpel, thanks for watching. I should of clarified which older engines. I was talking about pre-emissions 60 series, N14 and CAT. After emissions were added, it takes a lot more maintenance to get to 1 million.

DD13 engines in North America tend to catch clay, mud and other debris in the waffling and turn the engine into a heat sink which in turn reduces the life of the engine considerably. I used to build diesel engines at MCLB Barstow and 8th Motor Transportation Maintenance Battalion at MCB Lejeune. My personal opinion is that CAT 3406E, and C15 single turbo engines, Cummins N14, IXS15 (with a EGR delete), X15, Detroit Diesel Series 60 14 liter (with EGR delete), or DD15 and DD16 engines are the only engines to look at.
