    I really liked the video. 1 thing i think is funny how most AR folks preach BUIS on all rifles but when it comes to practical bolt guns hardly anyone wants them. I think the likelihood of damaging a scope or losing zero while hiking, hunting or scouting is far more likely than a optic going down during a gun fight for 99% of us. I think BUIS have a place on all rifles. Modern optics while very good, reliable and robust can and do still fail sometimes. I realize irons can too but definitely not as often. I also think people don't like to take the time to learn to be efficient and quick with irons and that is why they gravitate to red dots. At the end of the day this is just one persons opinion and people should use what works for them. Long live iron sights!!!!

    • @NoBrakes23
      @NoBrakes23 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I learned to shoot over irons, and I've never really made friends with scope shooting. I can never seem to get a good picture with a scope unless I'm so close that it smacks me in the eye pro, (And sometimes even then the picture is sub par.) After shooting old mil surps like Swiss K31s that will go sub-MOA at 300 yards with irons, I'm mystified why more modern rifles don't come with good, usable iron sights.

    • @DL-ij7tf
      @DL-ij7tf 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I agree it's annoying how few rifles come with irons these days. Ruger Gunsite Scout, Savage Hog Hunter, CZ 527 (and other CZs) are good. Zastava makes Mauser clones and others that are good especially for price. Mossberg Patriot, Winchester M70, and Ruger M77 are good options if you want 30-06 or larger but I prefer .308 at the biggest personally. There's always single shots and lever guns (Henry, Marlin, etc). I'd like to get a straight-walled cartridge model of Henry's Single Shot but I haven't been able to find one yet.

      My dad has been hunting with iron sights on his pump 7600 rem in 308. He said (and I believe him) he has never missed a deer. Most of his shots were under 50 yards (some out to 100). I remember my second year out with him we were stalking through some brush. Came out to a small clearing and jumped a buck. Watched my dad drop a buck in it's track running full speed from 40 yards. That is a shot that require iron sights or something similar.

      I've never cared for bolt-action rifles; being a southpaw all milsurps and most commercial rifles are backwards for me. That said, I totally agree with you on lever and pump rifles.

    • @johnstockton8138
      @johnstockton8138 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The lever action is superior to the bolt action rifle under the practical rifle guidelines presented. You can mount optics and scopes on lever action and they have cartridges effective in that close to 400 yard. Lever come even in 6.5 creedmoor if you want more range, and got artillery shells like 45 70. The lever action is much faster cycle mechanism than the bolt, if you are good you can almost get firing rates close to semi-auto rifles. And also the lever has side loading capabilities like a shotgun and dont require magazines.
      The bolt action rifle will always be what it was designed for a long range precision sniper rifle. This is the area the bolt action rifle excels at the most than any other rifle in existence.

The rear sight is mounted on the barrel, and the open sights are very useable and accurate. The 3 and 5 round box magazines carry easily and are quick to change. It'll do.

    Great video, and I like the points on the dot vs backup sights. Cooper was very smart, but you also have to look at the context of his times. He died in 2006, but likely had most of his adventures that formed his opinions mainly in the 1940's-1960's. At that point of course reliable, reliable, tough, long battery life red dots did not really exist, and the top end scopes were not as good as something you would buy at Walmart for $40 these days.

    For a Canadian practical rifle I've done the following build: Remington 7600, 18.6" barrel .308, threaded to 1/2" x 28 with a drilled out Vortex flash hider. I know that the pump is inferior for prone shooting but in Canada, with it's ever more onerous gun laws, there is a certain practicality in a generalist pump rifle.
    I've kept the OEM irons and zeroed them at 25 yards and run a Primary Arms 1-8X SFP illuminated scope with a .308 ACSS reticle in low Leupold QD rings zeroed at 100 yards.
    Sling is a Browning Xcellerator two point attached to a barrel band at the front and the OEM stud at the rear.
    I'm running a Mambamag 10 round magazine plus a bunch of Remington 4 rounders. All feed fine.
    I've shimmed and screwed on a picatinny rail on the left side of the forend for an Olight white/IR light and will probably do the same on the right side for an IR laser.

You hit two points that I think a lot of people overlook - one, that "scout rifle" is so narrowly defined that things like a dot sight backup are overlooked, and more importantly the topic of SKILLS. You can buy/build anything, but you should really consider TRAINING with it too.

    I was a recon scout on the ground and in armored personnel carriers and also later I became an aero scout flying helicopters both in the Army. A good scout shouldn’t have to use his weapon because he should be able to gather information and exit the area unseen. Also we were told that In actual combat we had a very short life expectancy. Compact and lightweight would be the option of choice unless you are also filling the role of a sniper and that’s another can of worms.

    I think Lee Enfield No 5 Carbine was the first scout rifle, not .308. The British .303 is if my memory is correct the .303 has a bullet is .311 diameter. It has a an aperture sight, cheap and easy to mount a forward scope and has been battle tested also came fitted with a flash suppresser. The concept came about in 1942 and went into production in 1944 and was produced until 1947. If your interested check out check out Forgotten Weapons.

    You should think about making a short film . This was a great video that had the feel of a large budget movie or drama trailer . Maybe do a film on the bundy standoff . I sure what ever project you might consider . After doing a casting call throughout the gun community .There would be no shortage of volunteers for actors and or extras.
    Since somehow I ended up on this subject . Knowing that 80 + percent of movies if not having gun's as almost a character themselves . They have guns in them . And with the high number of military and action movies . Such as good guys bad guys like Lethal Weapon, Strike Back , Twd , The UNIT , And a plethora of similar movies . I think it would be optimal for a gun oriented company with the knowledge of firearms . As well as all the right connections in the firearms community . To make a movie label or what ever they call them ? Production company . This way the actors could be knowledgeable shooters and the stories made would consist of topics the gun community wants to see .
    I will sum up what I am trying to say Guns and movies go together like cornflakes & milk . So to me it only makes sense that gun people make the movies and get it right . And another up side to this . Could be firearms as a whole will be seen in a positive light . Rather than Hollywood's mostly negative portrayal and misdirection .

      @LuckyGunner  8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I really like the CZ 527 a lot, and the 7.62x39 has the benefit of being very affordable to practice with. However, the range of that cartridge is limited and it doesn't deliver much power for a bolt action. The limited range may not be an issue for you depending on where you plan on taking the rifle. As for the caliber, if I'm going to be limited to a bolt action for a "do it all" kind of rifle, I would prefer a caliber that is more likely to take down the animal/threat quickly with one hit. I have more confidence that the .308 will do that over the 7.62x39.

Therefore, I was really thinking hard about just putting my Sparc 2 on my grendel taking off the variable scope, thus lightening the rifle by over 1/2 lb, and also for my Tikka T3 lite 308. I had watched numerous videos where the hunter was also using a 2moa Aimpoint quite successfully out to 200 plus yards. 7mm 08 is superior to 308, Jeff Cooper liked 7mm 08 better but they already had 7.62 x 51 in many weapons. My scout rifle is Ruger American compact 20 inch barrel 7mm x 08 Burris 3x9x40 with a British ww2 sling. It is simple light cheap shoots 1 MOA and I can use it. Nuff said.

    Fabulous editing, truly dramatic illistration of that drill.
    Would probably choose a "scout" if I had to choose one firearm to bug out with when S.H.F.T. happens. A decent Shitty would probably be my second choice, followed by a moderately high powerd semi-auto pistol...
    Funny how in a grid-down or otherwise scenario bereft of infrastructure and services, the least practical might just be the AR...but then again, maybe not.
    Thanks for bringing up the topic.

  • @44hawk28

    300 to 400 yards. If you play with 3 or 8 for any appreciable amount of time. Regular hits out to 600 yards should be well within any decent Shooters capability. As for using a red. Instead of iron sights, although sounds intriguing, the Marine Corps is having real problems getting new recruits to be able to hit a Target using a Red Dot site. And that's it only 100 yards. What I believe the Marines are failing to understand is that shooting a rifle without understanding iron sights may very well be a fundamental flaw and short-circuiting mindset where it comes to the understanding of ballistics. I'm not sure that that's the problem, I'm still trying to figure out what the issue might be but that's the first one that came to mind. Your final point is key. If you're going to build a battery of rifles your very first rifle should be a good solid 308 bolt rifle. Not only are they ubiquitous, with practice, they are as capable or more capable than almost any other rifle you will add to your collection. There is a huge caveat here, it requires practice. Buying a firearm to defend oneself is no better than buying a piano and claiming you now a musician.

    I see the value of a scout rifle... but there’s something about a “trapper” or “guide gun” short lever action .45-70 or .30-30... all being dependent on what your doing... most of time I’m either getting in and out of vehicles or walking through the woods... with shots ranging from 25-150 yards.. with shorter lighter rifles, chambered in intermediate or “big bore” calibers is probably the best general purpose guns you can get..

If I had to have one center fire rifle forever in North AmericaI this would be it. It is very light, handy, reasonably accurate. I have sucessfully killed deer at 200 and 250 yards with one shot kills. You do not see used Model 7 in .308 for sale very often. If you see one buy it.

    My only dissent from your idea of the practical rifle is your idea of having a back up optic, if the first fails. That's what Iron sights are perfect for, they don't take batteries, they cant be as subject to zeroing issues. What happens if both optics go down? Your still in the same boat. Now i'm not a slave to ghost ring sights at all, most military style rifles of older eras had a simple v notch rear sight blade.
    I am toying with a general purpose rifle concept of my own.
    I have a Savage Hog Hunter in .223. Now .308 is no doubt stouter and better for long range shooting, but .223 is cheaper, more available, and at the distances that the vast majority of shots I will be taking, .223 fits the bill just fine.
    The hog hunter has a threaded barrel, which will be sporting an A2 birdcage soon. (Suppressors are neat, but the NFA rigmarole is annoying) It has built in "Safari" style express sights which can be augmented with Williams firesight fiber optic sights. These are fine for a backup on a .223 rifle.
    The primary optic is a burris fastfire 3 on a QR mount on the front ring of the receiver.
    Now on to the hog hunters greatest flaw, it has a flush, non detachable magazine. But even this can be overcome. Highpower shooters of yesteryear had bolt on stripper clip guides that would mount to the rear receiver ring of remington700's and winchester 70's. I will fashion one out of a spare piece of weaver rail. I will also need to modify a lot of .223 stripper clips to be the correct length for the number of rounds the hog hunter holds (the factory says 4 in the mag, but 5 fits in just fine without compromising its ability to feed thus far.) This should make for a more than capable "carry rifle" that would suit a lot of needs.
    Really, one of the firearm manufactures needs to come up with a .223 and .308 caliber version of the Madsen M47 rifle, with $20 detachable mags and optic mounts. That's what most people are looking for.

      HumanRobotPunk +++ Agreed. Saying that red dot sights are superior to irons in almost every way is a stretch. Irons don't quit, they don't run on batteries and they rarely have to be zeroed once they're in. Also, you don't just throw on a red dot and your ready to go. Usually at the very least, you need to lollipop your red dot to get some sort of accuracy.

    Forgive me if I missed it, but what is the importance in having a forward mounted optic? The only real advantage I can conclude is correcting a malfunction may be easier without an optic over the bolt. But then again bolt guns rarely malfunction.

    • @LuckyGunner
      @LuckyGunner  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's been a while since I read Cooper's reasoning behind the forward mounted scope, but if I remember correctly, theoretically, it allows you to maintain awareness of your immediate surroundings, and I guess some people find them to be quicker than traditionally mounted scopes. Also, some Scout advocates like the fact that the forward mounted scope allows for the use of stripper clips, but with so many rifles available with detachable box magazines, this seems like a bit of a silly reason to use a sub-optimal scope mount. I think they upset the overall balance of the rifle, and they're not terribly easy to use. They are unforgiving of a less than perfect cheek weld -- your eye has to be in just the right spot to see through them. At least the ones I've used.
      My take on it is that the forward mounted scope idea was conceived in a time when variable power scopes were considered unreliable. Fixed power was the way to go (and even those were not considered to be especially rugged, hence the emphasis on backup iron sights). With a fixed power 4x or 6x optic mounted over the action, I suppose you'd theoretically risk getting "lost" in the scope and miss what's going on right in front of you. But today, even budget-level low power variable scopes are generally very reliable, and the forward mounted optic seems to be a bit of an anachronism. That said, I'm not hunting dangerous game on the African plains, which is what Cooper liked these rifles for, so what do I know?

    • @MrTndtv
      @MrTndtv 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lucky Gunner Ammo also you can carry the rifle balanced with one hand at the action, and you are able to use military bolt actions that use stripper clips, i.e Mauser, etc.
      The forward mount low powered scope let you keep both eyes open as you shoot, and believe me, it’s just as fast as iron sights. The forward mounted scope allows you to shoot any position quickly without getting “scope eye”

    OK i've got a question so the scout rifle being a bolt action or what you would consider low maintenance with all of the technology that has come out in semi auto rifles as a general purpose rifle wouldn't an A.R. 10 of good quality for a or an affordable price say $799-$1000 be a better all purpose rifle since they are reliable and if you clean them they are low maintenance? Wouldn't it be better to own a lightweight A.R. 10 with a 16 inch barrel chambered in 308-7 .62 x 51? As an X combat veteran even a small encounter with one or two aggressors and you're not a sniper you do not want a bolt action rifle to go against those individuals since you're on a scout op or a patrol....??

    Hi Chris: If my memory is accurate, neither your Practical Rifle nor LtCol Cooper’s Scout Rifle “loose” definitions mention capacity. Isn’t that an important attribute, which should be considered? To illustrate this, I’m reasonably sure (but with no quantitative data) that a 3+1 or a 4+1 capacity might be inadequate for some reasonable scenarios; similarly, I’m not personally convinced that loading >20 rounds is necessary (or even desirable). Should capacity be included in the “loose” definition and, if so, what is your recommendation? Thank you!

    • @LuckyGunner
      @LuckyGunner  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I suppose that depends on the intended application. I don't think of capacity as being particularly important for the things I would use a practical rifle for. Furthermore, the majority of the rifles that fit the "practical rifle" criteria don't have a capacity greater than 4 or 5+1. And for the few that do, the larger magazines tend to disrupt the handling characteristics that make these rifles attractive in the first place. But if you have need for more rounds on board, then of course that will change your priorities when you're considering what rifle works best for your situation.

    There is a passage in Coopers book "To Ride, Shoot Straight, and Speak the Truth" where he writes "specialization is for insects", and that goal for Men should be to become proficient across the widest range of endeavors. He often preached against "Dogma" and gave credit to guns such as Winchester's 94 lever action as being prototypical of the scout concept and placed a premium on the "handiness" of a rifle. Much along the lines of modern concealed carry philosophy. In other words, what good is having a tricked out 1911 for defense if its not with you when the red flag goes up? I think Jeff Cooper would very much approve of how this Tikka was set up and said as much while still living, when he praised many examples of rifles that incorporated what he considered the most important elements of his Scout Concept, while not actually being "Specialized" around the parameters he set forth. Under a Meter, Light, handi, powerful enough, sling, low power magnification for fast engagement of targets, and BUIS.. I agree with you that the latter is not the most important aspect of a scout rifle and its good to remember that the conference laying out these parameters was held in the early 80's and low powered optics and red dots have made "GIANT" leaps forward since Cooper built his Remington 600 in the early 70's. Which incidentally, did not have back up Iron sights.
