@benjaminnewton I think the name is not referring to Akropong but the name Acheampong. The man in the video stated that the name was named after a man named "Accompong" In Ghana there are people with the the name Acheampong and is obviously a corruption of the name.

We say Accompong in Jamaica which for us is correct. Sadly it was our same African brothers who sold us out, primarily the Ashanti. I'm also of the Maroon people but from Moore Town in Portland Jamaica. African Jamaicans are made up of over 100 different nations of Africa, the largest group est 25-30% from what is now Ghana. There are also Yuroba speaking Jamaicans in Clarendon. Some elders, amongst the Maroons, still can speak Twi.

kwacou Yeah, it’s not only the maroons that were from the Gold Coast in Jamaica. Probably a good 60% of ALL Jamaicans were sold from that area. I am originally from Portland, and by grandparents are from Mooretown. I have what may be called the typical Jamaican look, even more than the gentleman in the video. When some of the people from the gold coast see me, they say I look like people from their country.

@kwacou. honey the ashanatis apart from being farmers and artisans were also great warriors. and of course wars were common during the time of our ancestors for the acquisition of land, power and dominion. and so they were able to acquire more lands and needed slaves to work their lands. however they didn't enslave their own people but rather used war prisoners to work their lands. also the British started selling them slaves as well and so it went on from there. they never sold people of their own but war prisoners even though that was bad. the question were did the British get them slaves to sell them the asanti people. in actual sense our people didn't start selling slaves. it was the white man who started it and became a business. I know it's hard to take that in but the actual truth of the story is there somewhere. think about this. how can sell its strong and hard working men as well as their children (future of the tribe) in to slavery. pls think hard.

We need to stop calling ourselves maroon. Maroon was coined by the white man meaning wild man.
