Hi, I used this color years ago (L’Oréal HiColor Reds for Dark Hair Only) and want to go back to it. I was watching videos to see which shade I wanted to go with and how the different shades turned out on other people’s hair and I’m seeing a trend of people only using the highlight “Magenta” color. Hi Heather! I definitely will be trying this. I may try changing the colors a bit. My question is why do the Hicolor and the Chroma? I guess I don't know what both of those products do? I like the way yours came out. I just want it slight darker. I am probably gonna use a 20 developer cause I have greys but I don't want to over process my hair
I think my color treated hair is a level 5 and virgin hair is probably 3. I'm trying to do like a dark magenta or plum (I can't decide) but don't know what levels those brands are and if level 5 hair color will color level 5 hair.... I've been scouring the internet to find the levels and tones. Your video was very helpful by the way!
I really hope you ll notice my comment, my question is: after bleaching my hair i have decided to dye them using a boxe dye ( olia garnet red) the result is honestly nice but i was wondering what to do once my new growth appears ? Should i rebleach or only use hi color magenta all over using a 20 volume developer as my hair are already dyed using a permanent hair dye. Please help
Hello from a desperate girl in quarantine! Fantastic video! I hope you are hanging in there during this crazy time... I had my hair died red professionally a while back and my roots are growing out again. My natural hair right now is probably a level 6 blonde. Is that dark enough to use the Loreal Chroma color on it? If not, do you have a different line that you would recommend? The faded red with the growing roots is driving me mad.
Hello! I’m naturally dark blonde, but have been dying my hair red for years. Currently it’s a darker auburn but I want to get to a lighter and brighter red. I feel like L’Oréal hi-color is going to my best bet, at least to initially get the red color I’m wanting. Since my hair is not naturally dark I would probably switch to a comparable color not meant specifically for dark hair when doing touch ups. What do you think? I don’t have a lot of knowledge, I’ve just done some research. I’ve gathered that I should probably use 10 or 20 developer (1:2?), start with my ends and do my roots last, and probably keep an eye on the color to know when it’s time to rinse...does this sound right or no?
I used 30, and it turned out to be such a beautiful bright red!!!!! I just kept taking care of my hair afterwards, showered less and brightened it up with semi permanent manic panic red and your good to go!!!!!!!!! 😊😁😁
THANK YOU FOR THE VIDEO!! Gorgeous hair❤️🍒 I have a question please answer😭 I’ve never bleached my hair before. Right now my hair color is black because of previous black dyes (i haven’t dyed it black in a year) so my hair is black but really faded like my roots have my virgin hair/color which is like a light medium brown not too dark and the rest of my hair is like brown with black. Do you think using this dye would make my hair completely red since my hair is dark but its been dyed before and i’ve never used bleach?? Also what developer should i get??
Your new growth would definitely turn Red! But the black hair won’t turn as red! Even if u haven’t colored it in a year, it will need to be bleached or you can even use a color remover on it first- but the new growth will definitely not match the colored hair. I’m sorry girl! Thank u for the question!! Once u use a bleach or color remover on the darker hair, I would use a 20 volume to color it red! I hope that helps! Let me know how it goes and if you have other questions!
Hair By Heather thank you so much for answering! would my hair get damaged with bleach? I’m going to the salon Wednesday and idk if its worth it i’ve never bleached my hair before but i’m assuming the products they will use at the salon will barely damage my hair. Also if i dye it red would i need to use bleach all over again on my roots or something?
yuliet xo The bleach will definitely damage your hair a little but there really isn’t any way around it to get out the dark dye! (Maybe they have Olaplex at the salon that they can use while bleaching your hair to help out a bit with the damage). You shouldn’t have to bleach ur new growth at all!!!
Hi, thank you for posting this. I just mixed chroma Cayenne with Hicolor red hot..used 30 developer on pre lightened hair to take out all the old dye. I guess I missed a few spits and there are a few brown patches in the back, I hit it again with red hot and the brown patches are still there...any suggestions or do I have to spot beach?
Good review ! I want to know what developer to use for my dark black hair color. I dyed it once but even if it was supposed to be red it stayed black ... but now I'm trying it with ruby red like yours. What developed level should I use :)
Hello! If your hair is black or close to it, you will have to either bleach it first or use a color remover to lighten it up before you color it red or ruby! I wouldn’t go more than a 30 volume with bleach to lighten your hair (I don’t go more than 20 volume in my own hair, but black is so dark. I’m not sure how many levels it will lighten, but if you are going with a darker red, it may just be enough!) and to color your hair red, I would use the 20 volume as well! Let me know how it goes!!!
Hair By Heather oh wow okay thank you so much for replying!!! And even if my hair is short and not really thick 20 would be fine still ? Kind of like yours ... above the shoulders
tiff got jimins jams! Yep! The only time you would use just 10 volume would be if you are coloring your hair darker. (So like if you had blonde hair and wanted to color it brown or black or sometime :)
Because you are a professional id say measuring is less needed.... I have worked as a professional chef and I do not measure to make crust or biscuits.... After a while you just know... I realize this is an old video but it is new to me. :)
I was wondering if u could give me some tips i removed my hair color with pravanna color remover then like a couple weeks later i dyed it with chroma sangria and hi color magenta the bottom of my hair went dark i used i want to do it again i was wonder if i use a color stripper then dye it will that be my best option ?
My hair is originally brown. Ive turned it blond with sun in. Ive been blond for like 4 years. I jusy touch up my roots with the sun in. I want to go red. Should i still use this since im originally brown or what should i use??
The ends of my hair are so red already that when I start on the roots it just makes the whole thing look even! And the roots still tend to fade a lot faster than the rest of my hair. If you were going from brown or a diff color to red you would want to start at the ends first so you don’t get the really bright roots!
Anytime you color your hair it damages it a little! Just make sure to get a good hair treatment for after!! Aussie 3 minute miracle deep conditioner is amazing and its cheap and you can get it at Walmart it target!
Ur saying the Loreal Chroma is for dark hair only but may I ask why the box says for light, dark and grey hair? I'm glad I just found your video before I put on my platinum hair lol incase I'm not supposed to.
It’s super strong so you don’t have to bleach ur hair first if you have dark hair! You can use it on lighter hair! If anything it will just be brighter!!! What color are you going to do? The red!? 😘😘😘
I went ahead and went back in to the red. I used to have red hair up until a year ago when I went platinum. My hair turned out very bright and vibrant!! I mixed 2 colors so I could fill the hair and it turned out perfect.
I have a question. I noticed your link says red fire but in the video you say red hot. So which one is it? I really want the color you have so I just want to make sure I have the correct color.
i dyed my hair blue but it’s still pretty dark and i missed some parts. will i be able to do this over my dyed hair? as in will it come out even? or would i have to go back to black for this?
hi! i know this video was awhile ago, but i’m dyeing my hair this color and the only developer i could find right now is 30. i have thick brown hair with red highlights already, do you think 30 is going to be okay?
NO! Developers open the hair cuticle. Level 10 deposits the dye on your hair only- it doesn't lighten it at all. 20 -30- & 40 have increasing levels of peroxide which lightens your hair, or 'lifts' it, one 'level' for every step up. 20- will lighten your hair, one level from your current hair color; 30- jumps you 2 levels; 40- 3. Here's a good web site that explains it in more detail: holleewoodhair dot com/ volumes-of-developer/ I hope you didn't go for the 30! Goodluck.
Yesss it would work soo good!!! A lot of the time u are suppose to color the grown out hair and save the new growth for the end bc it develops faster, but with this color I always just do the whole thing and it always matches exactly!
I can’t remember what I used in that video but I would suggest using “L’Oréal Excellence Hi Color For dark hair only” hair color!! They have a copper red or you can always mix a couple colors!!!! You can get it at Sally!!
Hey girl so I recently dyed my hair a magenta and red mixed together with the loreal hi lights it came out a pretty plum color and in sun like a pretty red any way I didn't do my roots till last but in the middle it's darker then roots n ends how can I fix that? Would u recommend me do the dark parts first then roots then downward? Please help
Love your tutorial I have the same color as your base color and want the red you did but I have a darker band mid shaft hopefully I get good results trying your technique
Hi, I have full head of blonde highlights and my hair is naturally black. I want a red copper hair color. Woul you recommend the cayenne red 7? With 20 developer
Hey Delilah! The blonde will definetly take on the "red/Copper" color no problem! Is the rest of your hair black then? If so and the black in your hair is completely virgin hair (Never ever colored) then it should lighten pretty well and turn into a nice red/copper color- but if you have black hair color on it, then its not going to lighten as much. (I do think either way, your blonde hair will end up brighter than the darker black hair- but if anything, it will just keep that pretty highlighted look to it!) Maybe you could try mixing like 3/4 parts Copper to 1/4 parts red? I will put a link below to the copper color i would suggest! I hope this helps! Let me know how it turns out and if you have any other questions!! www.sallybeauty.com/hair/hair-color/permanent-hair-color/hicolor-red-hilights-magenta-permanent-creme-hair-color/SBS-500240.html
You can start either an inch away from the roots just bc your scalp is hotter so it may develop faster! Otherwise if your lazy just do it all at once 😂
So much work to maintain! I have just been using a semi perm color that is easier on my hair! I let it fade pretty orange at the ends before coloring it tho! Otherwise it would be ready to color after like 4 washes
so my natural hair color is like a deep lindsay Lohan red ..however my hair is dyed black right now with my natural hair being red will this work on my black dyed hair????
Hey! It doesn’t matter what color ur natural is (it sounds beautiful!!)- all that matters is what color it is now. The black is going to cause some problems. I think if you put just red over it as is, it will turn a little red but we super dark still. I would suggest a color remover first and then the red!
20 volume would work just as well!!! You can always get 10 volume in the future and mix them to make 20 volume so you don’t have to waste it. Hope it turns out awesome!
I have a question PLEASE ANSWER!!! I went to the salo to get some red hair like your but the girl that dye my hair bleached my hair and then she use a fashion red color and its red but really red and I don't like it. I hate this res I want to fix my hair cuz I don't look good. And my question is If I dye my hair as you did over the brilliant red color that I have gonna looks like yours and this way of dye gonna cover my ugly red?
It should dye over the top fine. You need to make sure that the color you dye your hair is darker than the red tho! And some of the red may still show through, but I’m guessing you are ok with that if you got it colored red in the first place! Hope this helps!
@@HairByHeather i have another question lol and by the way thanks for the answer! I get the fashion red color a week ago and like I said I didn't like so yesterday I buy a box of permanent dye color from schwarzkopf on red ruby and I put it over the ugly fashion red and now my hair doesn't looks super red like before but some parts from the back looks like clear orange something like that and the front looks good so now what I can do please help me !!! I thought it gonna be perfect because my hair was bleached and I thought that it gonna takes good the new color but I never imagine that it wouldn't be like I thought
I’m confused on what combination of L’Oréal hi color hilights and L’Oréal hi color to use.. I’ve put oops on my hair and now my hair is back to virgin (dark brown/black). I tried a strand test and it didn’t work
dunia hajali so what you might need to do is use a neutral protein filler this can be purchased at any beauty supply store. It helps lock in the color. The combination of colors she uses L’Oréal Hi Color Red Hot, L’Oréal Chroma Reds: Cayenne and Sangria. Then she used a level 10 developer but because you went back to your natural color (it’s not virgin per say as it’s been colored, just color is now removed) so I’d start at a 20. For ratios it’s a 1:2 ratio meaning 1 fl oz of color and 2 fl oz of developer. I’ve been coloring, and doing hair for 7 years. But feel free to experiment and have fun. Also use a shampoo that is Sulfate and Paraben free it’ll help too with keeping the color, and with the coloring process. Good brands I use: Shea Moisture, OGX, Aveeno, Ion, Hask, DevaCurl and Aveda. Also cruelty free as well! Good luck with your color!
I used the loreal hicolor in copper a couple of months ago to lighten my dyed dark brown hair. I had super bright ginger roots and the rest of my hair was still brown. It did lighten a few shades but not what I wanted. I've been thinking about trying it again but scared it will damage my hair. Do you think I would be okay since it's been a couple of months or that it would even lighten my hair again?
Hey! Unless your hair is super weak, you should be just fine to color your hair again! It’s just tricky to know how much the hicolor will actually lighten your hair again! I actually had the exact same experience a while back with the copper color! It didn’t lighten the red in my hair at all so my new growth was copper and the rest just took on a very slight orange! Good luck!
YAY! That is good to hear!!!!!! Honestly, the Aussie 3 Minute Miracle is my Holy Grail!! And it is so cheap! My hair is not in great shape bc i am constantly coloring it- which makes it hard to brush after I wash it. I just use this 3 Minute Miracle in my hair every other wash and it makes my hair so much softer and so mush easier to manage!!!! www.walmart.com/ip/Aussie-3-Minute-Miracle-Moist-Deep-Conditioning-Treatment-8-fl-oz/10316482?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=0&wl13=3237&adid=22222222227009516893&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=40842742592&wl4=aud-273067695102:pla-57787176106&wl5=1025858&wl6=&wl7=&wl8=&wl9=pla&wl10=8175035&wl11=local&wl12=10316482&wl13=3237&veh=sem
Nikita Schuyler it depends on hair texture and color. Do you have thin light brown blond hair or thick dark hair. If you do it a bit of 20 volume may be ok for it to not be so damaging.
I'm sorry I didn't see this sooner Nikita!! The 30 developer is going to be more damaging- so only use that on your hair if your hair is in pretty good condition! Have you ever tried using a semi permanent red color? Maybe that would make the red more vibrant.
I’ve used these reds before but the red you used is called Cayenne like the cayenne pepper 😂 you called it Cheyanne like the Indian tribe 😂😂💕 nice tutorial thank you! ✨✨✨
I have dark brown hair but not virgin. I did do a color remover so I got some artificial color out. I’m wanting my color to come out like yours. Not too bright, not toon dark. Which color combination could you recommend that I try? if you can.
Depending on how light your hair is, you could use the same thing I used. It all depends on the level your hair is. So for example, a level 1 is black and a level 10 is very blonde. So if you are right in the middle at a 5, your hair will stay a 5 no matter what color you put on top (Even if its lighter). So if your hair is a level 5 (med brown) and you put a lighter red color on top, your hair will stay the med brown shade, but just collect some of the red color. I hope that makes sense!!!!
I hope you’re doing OK because I haven’t seen you in years. Make a video video.. if you see this in OK, could you please respond to me so I know. I just like to make sure you’re safe.
How as a licensed cosmetologist are you okay with “teaching people how to color their own hair” 🤦🏼♀️ I get you are trying to be helpful but this is trade that some of pay a lot of money to learn and you are just teaching people for free.. also we have to be the ones to fix it in Salon when they mess up.
Frankie Schlicher people are going to do their own hair at home regardless of if they know how to or not... also some people can’t afford to go to the salon. Showing people the correct way to color there hair will help those people out. I didn’t go to beauty school to be money hungry. I went so I can teach people about their hair and how to care for it. Coloring it is one of those things.
Frankie Schlicher Also this one video should have no effect on stylists clientele. If it does then maybe the stylist is the problem. It’s a relationship we build with our clients. Lots of my clients can color their own hair just fine and have done it in the past. They see me because they enjoy our time together and the relationship we have.
I believe this is by far the best “hair color at home” video I’ve seen. It was sooo informational and your hair looks great! Thank you!
Thank you Carleen!!!!!!!

Hair By Heather oh I see ! That makes sense. Alright thanks once again ☺️👍 hope my hair turns out red :,) merry Christmas !
Omg girl this was sooo helpful ur a saint. thank you!!!
😘😘😘😘
Would I be okay mixing in a 20 volume developer? I have the chroma in chroma cherry and I really want it to show up on my dark hair
Hi I just bought Revelon Burgundy and Gariner nutrisse light intense auburn ( name is hiscbus) , wondering what color I will get?
Hi i want to do burgundy what do you recommend. I have dark hair.
Omg thank you for this video ❤️
can i make this beautiful "job" on my dark and dyed hair (level 4)??
Because you are a professional id say measuring is less needed.... I have worked as a professional chef and I do not measure to make crust or biscuits.... After a while you just know... I realize this is an old video but it is new to me. :)
Pretty.
I have a lot of hair and long so how many tubes or boxes do I need?
i’ve seen that if you start with roots first you get hot roots, is that true and how did you avoid it?
The ends of my hair are so red already that when I start on the roots it just makes the whole thing look even! And the roots still tend to fade a lot faster than the rest of my hair. If you were going from brown or a diff color to red you would want to start at the ends first so you don’t get the really bright roots!
Hair By Heather my hair is dyed on the ends a caramel color so if i dye my whole head red would the ends be a different color if i tried?
My hair is dark brown, but it's dyed that color. Is the loreal dye still going to be okay or will it damage it since it's not natural dark brown?
Can you only do this on only naturally dark brown hair or can you do this if you currently have bleached and colored treated hair?
Yes you definitely can!!!
Hair By Heather thank you for replying
I have a question. I noticed your link says red fire but in the video you say red hot. So which one is it? I really want the color you have so I just want to make sure I have the correct color.
cely11811 is actually red hot
i dyed my hair blue but it’s still pretty dark and i missed some parts. will i be able to do this over my dyed hair? as in will it come out even? or would i have to go back to black for this?
hi! i know this video was awhile ago, but i’m dyeing my hair this color and the only developer i could find right now is 30. i have thick brown hair with red highlights already, do you think 30 is going to be okay?
Goodluck.
Would you recommend this for light brown hair?
I got my hair colored almost the same as yours a little over a month ago at the salon. I have new growth and am just curious how this will look.
Yesss it would work soo good!!! A lot of the time u are suppose to color the grown out hair and save the new growth for the end bc it develops faster, but with this color I always just do the whole thing and it always matches exactly!
If i showered in the morning, am i still able to dye my hair in the evening or do i have to wait a couple of days to dye it?
Yep you can still color ur hair the same day! It’s better to wait but I don’t see a problem with it!!
I have my hair dyed like a wine red and im trying to go for a copper red would you suggest to remove the ref or just dye it on top
I can’t remember what I used in that video but I would suggest using “L’Oréal Excellence Hi Color For dark hair only” hair color!! They have a copper red or you can always mix a couple colors!!!! You can get it at Sally!!
@@HairByHeather i have the magenta from loreal hicolor highlight on but i want to dye it loreal sizzling vopper mixed with red fire .
Please help
Can I use this if my hair is already red? Looking to go more vibrant and more in your face kinda red.
Yesss you can!!!!
How do you keep your hair so shiny, Heather? Are you a natural brunette or?
It is naturally brown! And honestly I think just the straightener I use makes it look shiny!
Love your tutorial I have the same color as your base color and want the red you did but I have a darker band mid shaft hopefully I get good results trying your technique
Love it, don't go back to blonde!😍

@@HairByHeather thank you, I will be trying!
@@HairByHeather think you linked to magenta instead on a accident :) still was a helpful comment tho, thx!
Can a mix the hi color L’Oréal in red copper with a extensive light auburn is cu I don’t want it to bright ?
Yes of course!!!!!! Let me know how it goes girl!
If I have virgin hair where do I start to apply it?
You can start either an inch away from the roots just bc your scalp is hotter so it may develop faster! Otherwise if your lazy just do it all at once 😂
Love the hair color! I’ve been coloring my hair red for awhile now and love it. I had it done at a salon last time though.
Colleen Courtney it really is easier to go to a salon isn’t it!! 🤣 I love your hair color in your profile picture!
That was a really old pic of me. I just updated it to one right after I got my color done a week ago. LOVE the new color.
Colleen Courtney omg I LOVE IT!! It’s like the exact same color as mine!!!!! 😍
What do you use to maintain? That’s my main issue rn
So much work to maintain! I have just been using a semi perm color that is easier on my hair! I let it fade pretty orange at the ends before coloring it tho! Otherwise it would be ready to color after like 4 washes
What do you recommend on getting my bottom half red like my top half? Top is red bottom red wine reddish color. Way darker than my top😭
No bleaching
How long will the dye last and start fading away
It fades really fast. 2 weeks usually!
so my natural hair color is like a deep lindsay Lohan red ..however my hair is dyed black right now with my natural hair being red will this work on my black dyed hair????
Hey! It doesn’t matter what color ur natural is (it sounds beautiful!!)- all that matters is what color it is now. The black is going to cause some problems. I think if you put just red over it as is, it will turn a little red but we super dark still. I would suggest a color remover first and then the red!
i just did mine in red.... and i hate it, i got chroma garnet.... to go over any suggestions? i grabbed 30 volume developer is that too much? help
20 volume would work just as well!!! You can always get 10 volume in the future and mix them to make 20 volume so you don’t have to waste it. Hope it turns out awesome!
So I did this with red and my root are red and my ends are red and the middle came out dark how do I fix it
You may have to do a color remover on the middle of your hair and then recoils!
Recolor***
Good luck!
Hair By Heather Thanks for the comment! I was actually too afraid to damage it so I'm getting it professionally done today, haha.
Nicole Cossin well good luck!!!!!!!!! Let me know how it turns out!!!
Hair By Heather it turned out amazing! My hair is a bit dry but at least it's red now haha. Can you recommend any hair masks?
YAY! That is good to hear!!!!!! Honestly, the Aussie 3 Minute Miracle is my Holy Grail!! And it is so cheap! My hair is not in great shape bc i am constantly coloring it- which makes it hard to brush after I wash it. I just use this 3 Minute Miracle in my hair every other wash and it makes my hair so much softer and so mush easier to manage!!!! www.walmart.com/ip/Aussie-3-Minute-Miracle-Moist-Deep-Conditioning-Treatment-8-fl-oz/10316482?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=0&wl13=3237&adid=22222222227009516893&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=40842742592&wl4=aud-273067695102:pla-57787176106&wl5=1025858&wl6=&wl7=&wl8=&wl9=pla&wl10=8175035&wl11=local&wl12=10316482&wl13=3237&veh=sem
Welp you just killed my plans on using chroma I only have today to do my hair
How come?
I have a dark red but I want to go to a bright red wht developer should I use 20 or 30??
Nikita Schuyler it depends on hair texture and color. Do you have thin light brown blond hair or thick dark hair. If you do it a bit of 20 volume may be ok for it to not be so damaging.
I'm sorry I didn't see this sooner Nikita!! The 30 developer is going to be more damaging- so only use that on your hair if your hair is in pretty good condition! Have you ever tried using a semi permanent red color? Maybe that would make the red more vibrant.
I had a fun dyeing but my hair turned fuchsia I dont want it that color
Amanda Reed if you used the highcolor, then just use a semi permanent dye like manic panic or arctic fox to change the tone of the color.
I’ve used these reds before but the red you used is called Cayenne like the cayenne pepper 😂 you called it Cheyanne like the Indian tribe 😂😂💕 nice tutorial thank you! ✨✨✨
Hahaha, apparently I can’t read 🤦🏻♀️😂😘

Love it♥️ 🔥, thank you
