Yes it is relatively manoeuvrable as you can see in the linked video th-cam.com/video/IEhPy_Lzf8g/w-d-xo.html

It's nice to see kites made from found material. Reduce, reuse, recycle!♻️

I just bought some nylon parasail material off EBay. I 'm making a Scot sled kite. I will install grommets through material for attaching my line.

WOW, the David Pelham book of kites, i first got this book when i was at school and i read it till i could almost remember every page, (and yes the pages came loose on my copy!), a very influencial book.
On the subject of arial photography, a German group who make large historical box kites (videos posted on youtube) have attached a go-pro type camera ridgedly to their kite, being a big stable box kite it makes a great platform for a camera without the need for special camera carriers.

+Ian Virco thanks for taking the time to comment. I picked that book up in a charity shop although I think I already had one in my bookshelves somewhere. On the photography subject, yes the very large box kites are supposed to be good for that. I have no plans to make one myself at the moment but it could be a project for the future.

+GrandadIsAnOldMan You do not need a massive box kite, until it made a successful bid for freedom i had a self built Hargreave type box kite, 4ft tall, 2ft wide, 1 ft deep, this was very stable in the air and in a moderate+ breeze pulled like a tractor, it would have had the lift to haul a minature camera into the air directly attached to it, care would have to be taken with camera position not to upset the flight balance of the box kite.

Definitely need to bridle it as a single line kite and twin tails can be good too.

+wordreet you will see in the next episode, (which comes out around Christmas Day at the moment unless something more appropriate pops into my head), that it flies OK with the twin lines and I even have a measure of maneuverability but it definitely needed tails. I remember making these years ago about the same time Peter Powell was starting his stunt kites and I was doing it with sled kites. Not as well as his but as you will see you can go left and right which does make it more interesting that just straight up.

GrandadIsAnOldMan Argh! Stop talking about xmas already! I'm no where near ready for it yet!!!

wordreet plenty of time, I always find that shops never run out of saucepans, irons, and ironing boards. Wives always appreciate the thought and effort you put in to those sort of presents. You should try it ;-) oh, if you do you may want to have a blanket ready in case you are sleeping on the sofa for a while.

As you said at the end it could do with a single line, traditionally sled kites are single line with the bridle being 3x the length of the sail, and with having holes in the base of the sail there should be no need for a tail.
    great video as always.

+Pete Gow thanks, you will see in the next episode, (which comes out around Christmas Day at the moment unless something more appropriate pops into my head), that it flies OK with the twin lines and I even have a measure of maneuverability but it definitely needed tails flown like that. I remember making these years ago about the same time Peter Powell was starting his stunt kites and I was doing it with sled kites. Not as well as his but as you will see you can go left and right which does make it more interesting that just straight up.

+GrandadIsAnOldMan And Peter Powell is still going, I make sled kites but a lot smaller size for my Beaver scouts and cubs to make and fly, I have an urge to make a larger one but it will be single lined just for the stability so i can put a keychain camera on it and do some aerial photography and if that works as well as it should maybe a slightly larger point and shoot camera.
Looking forward to the next episode too.

Pete Gow yep, they are supposed to be one of the more stable kites. You may find that using a keychain camera gives you a very shaky result. I tried it with my minicamera and it was pretty well unwatchable. It is so light it just bounces around. I think a heavier camera would be more stable. If you want good pictures you need to make a special bracket to stabilise it. Here is my attempt without making a proper bracket and it was not very successful but if you read the video description I give links to people who got it right th-cam.com/video/5mNBoSkT-dY/w-d-xo.html

I've already made the contraption for the camera, An old coat hanger with a couple of twists to go on the line and a blob of blutack for the counterweight.
its getting the weight just right to allow it to be stable enough to take stills from the video.

Can you place your minicam on the kite?? Maybe you have great shots of the sky:)

+JOHN diy STUFF〉make everything if you want good pictures you need to make a special bracket to mount it and you need a stable kite to lift it. I tried it back in February without making a proper bracket and it was not very successful but if you read the video description I give links to people who got it right th-cam.com/video/5mNBoSkT-dY/w-d-xo.html

It is the plastic sheeting that was used to make a waterproof membrane underneath the concrete floor in my house. It is quite thick and very strong.
