SLBM are absolutely critical for maintaining the Western concept of MAD and projecting nuclear deterrence against current and emerging existential threats. But, I'm not sure UK defense budgets or UK leadership has the will to maintain this deterrence much longer - which will be a shame.
Last year UK Government said it has begun "increasing its nuclear warhead arsenal". After fact checking into the matter it turns out that they are decommissioning nuclear warheads and replacing them with newer ones, but also the trident missile will hold 2-3 extra warheads per missile in the future So ... there will be no extra missiles just same amount but with 2-3 extra nuclear warheads per missile.
Thankfully we will not be giving up our deterrent and our new Dreadnaught class subs are being built as we speak. I wish we did not have to have a nuclear deterrent but sadly we have regimes that have no issue in throwing around threats and invading when they feel like it so we need our independent nuclear deterrent.

@user-nu6bl4ru2q I am not just talking about submarine technology and you're right, we've pioneered pump jets and 'stealth technology' too, but we could not have afforded to have developed reactors with natural circulation (ie no pumps at patrol speeds) which makes a huge difference. We rely perhaps too heavily on the USN for many things other than kit, such as access to their intelligence. But in our favour, I also think we have a different culture which is more aggressive and less constrained by orthodoxy. In the past ,US submarines were given so many equipment upgrades, they didn't have time to learn to use all the capability. I was always confident of our ability to hold our own with any opponent and the Spearfish gave us a huge advantage when it was introduced. But we 're not spending much on missiles ! So credit where credit is due, we’ve got here working together and I am glad that we haven’t wasted money researching and developing the same things.

One RO special was greatly amused to hear a little song being sung by a russian radio operator which had a chorus of " The Admiral wants to know how close is the Brit to my keel" Nice to know they have a sense of humour. The answer would have been "about 12 foot away!" we have always had the craziest but brilliant skippers ,boats and crews.
The citizenry is waking up...finally.
HMS Astute grounded herself in my village. Lots of boats have been grounded around here…usually due to sandbanks. I felt so sorry for the crew - it seemed as though every media person in Scotland descended into Kyleakin to get footage.
I live about 10mins walk from where they are built in Barrow in Furness, its an interesting day when they are moved along the dock past Morrison's supermarket to the lock gates to Walney channel to the open sea.
Astute just completed 363 days at sea.
After fact checking into the matter it turns out that they are decommissioning nuclear warheads and replacing them with newer ones, but also the trident missile will hold 2-3 extra warheads per missile in the future
So ... there will be no extra missiles just same amount but with 2-3 extra nuclear warheads per missile.
The British nuclear deterrent is going nowhere.
@@phrankster909 I hope so.
What where extremely good at is keeping our mouths shut about certain criteria
Thankfully we will not be giving up our deterrent and our new Dreadnaught class subs are being built as we speak. I wish we did not have to have a nuclear deterrent but sadly we have regimes that have no issue in throwing around threats and invading when they feel like it so we need our independent nuclear deterrent.

Very strange.
US and UK collaborate on nuclear propulsion.
BAE Systems actually makes the newer VPM tomahawk Missile Module for the Virginia Class (Block-V), also the technology behind pump-jet propulsion is from the shared UK technology programme, so it works both ways.
BAE Systems? Formally known as in British Aerospace Systems? Yeah, we British (sorry, Briddish) are quite proud of them AND Rolls-Royce Engineering.
As a former US Submariner, I can honestly say that the Astute is better than any US Virginia class at being a hunter killer. The Seawolf class remains the best hunter killers in the world.
Typical US arrogance throughout

I cannot believe that the UK doesn't have at least 10 of them. It's a bargain.
The problem is manning them, we don't have the numbers unfortunately. Struggling to fill the 5 we have at the minute, quality over quantity.
I reckon the Royal Navy screwed up by scrapping the Upholder class boats. They were diesel subs that were sneaky as fuck and near impossible to detect inshore…..perfect for sneaking into hostile territory without detection. They were sold off and I still think it’s a shame. Same goes for our Sandown class mine hunters. We have an underwater testing range called BUTEC up here and kinds of vessels and weapons are tested. I remember when HMS Sandown first came up for sea trials and it only felt like a couple of years had passed before the Saudis were up here looking to buy some. They had a massive party the whole community was invited to at the end of the trials…..summer 96 I think.

I'm not denying that it is good SSN, but its missile armament looks subpar to chinese or russian counter parts, no?
And its like their №1 job - go highseas and wreak havoc on surface ships via missiles
It’s role it’s to protect sea lanes, be that by engaging surface or sub surface enemies. They’re also pretty good at area denial, just the chance that an SSN is in the area will keep the bad guys in port (see the Falklands conflict for an example)
I was a submariner in the RN. Russian and especially Chinese subs are that loud they may as well live broadcast their position. I’d be confident on a astute class wiping out a pack of Chinese subs without them ever knowing it was there.
The Royal Navy's submarines are designed for anti submarine warfare as their first prioirty.
...its job is to find and sink enemy submarines. All other roles are subordinate. Missiles are toys. Spearfish is not.
The Chinese and Russian missiles are crap. This is a high end boat with elite crew. Well maintained with exceptional personnel

If ASTUTE wasn't better than current US types, then AUKUS would be spelt AUS. I have to add that ASTUTEs use a lot of US technology (thank you Yanks)
They can also identify every ship that leaves NY without leaving British waters..! ooops!
I think that this documentary sounds a lot like a cheap advert that tries its best to convince you that it spells the best in its category, but... what about the russians, french, chinese??? how old are the so call high techs mentionned in this video??? for exemple; about the sonar being the best, it is the best actually but it's not british, the sonar has been developped by the French group Thales, and just for informative purposes, the israeli forces are the number one in the world about taking any existing weapon and transformes it to something that calls for respect, it's another level.
Thales is jointly owned by British and French and I think some others (but not sure)

Virginia class: These submarines use a nuclear reactor (S9G reactor) for propulsion, generating around 40,000 shaft horsepower, which drives a pump-jet propulsor.
Astute class: The Astute class also relies on a nuclear reactor (Rolls-Royce PWR2) for propulsion, providing approximately 43,000 shaft horsepower to a pump-jet propulsor.
The Royal Navy’s Astute class has a top speed of 30kn (56km/h; 35m/h) when fully submerged. The Virginia class is slower, reaching speeds of around 25kn (46km/h; 29m/h).
Virginia class: The Virginia class utilizes the advanced AN/BQQ-10 sonar suite, including bow, flank, and towed array sonars. It also features photonics masts with high-resolution cameras instead of traditional periscopes.
Astute class: The Astute class is equipped with the Thales 2076 sonar suite, featuring bow, flank, and towed array sonars. It also has optronic masts with high-resolution cameras.
It is understood that the Royal Navy's sesnors are far superior to that of the US. In 2012, during the joint exercise Fellowship, Astute performed simulated battles with the latest United States Navy Virginia-class submarine, USS New Mexico. Royal Navy Commander Iain Breckenridge was quoted, "Our sonar is fantastic and I have never before experienced holding a submarine at the range we were holding USS New Mexico. The Americans were utterly taken aback, blown away with what they were seeing".
The astute class are also equipped with a unique coating that absorbs sound (anechoic tiles) and a propulsion system that generates less noise to diminish their acoustic signature.
The only real advantage that Virginia has is that is carries a slightly bigger payload, making it more of a carrier type vessel than a true silent hunter-killer like the astute, which also happens to be smaller and can dive deeper. @@carryfreak5059

WHEN was it GENERALLY known that the most dangerous submarines in the world were owned by the USN? I didn't know that! Your US exceptionalism makes the basis of this video doubtful. How many enemy ships have US submarines sunk? How many enemy fleets have US submarines kept in port?
From what iv read and seen astute and Virginia are very close with more weapons going us and speed going to the UK boats to close to call if you ask me but as I'm sure teck and improvement are shared between the two there both as good as they are because of shared teck and development arguing who the best is pointless they are well ahead of the rest because of each other and any advantages one has over the other is simply as a result of ongoing development between them both
