3:34 The first thing i learned at chemistry is to never, ever, smell any substance like that. you wave it to your nose with your hand. What you did was really risky.
Waving your hand over the source towards your face is the way I was taught to smell items, why did NO ONE do that here ? instead you all risk it by taking a direct sniff !? Please post PROPER technique for smelling items, you might save somebody.

Ikr, In science, when we were learning about that stuff, my teacher was like: "Don't sniff right into the chemicals, it's very dangerous. Instead, just waft with your hand." My Class: Tf...
Halogens are all really reactive and nasty. I worked for a company that used to import Bromine gas, which was transported in small [20'] glass lined tanks which we used to call 'flasks'. When they had been emptied, there was always a tiny amount of Bromine liquid left in the flask - this liquid was called 'Ullage'. On one occasion, a tiny amount was accidentally released. My workplace was evacuated, the fire service called. Once it was safely cleared up, we returned - and it was obvious that the ullage had eaten into the concrete floor of the yard. And don't forget, Chlorine was used as an utterly lethal weapon in World War One.
My chemistry teacher used to work at a water treatment plant. Some of the chlorine gas leaked and a 5km area was evacuated. These elements are very quite nasty.
Oh wow... You don't smell dangerous stuff like that.... You hold it ~20 cm away from yourself, then lightly wave the air from the bottle in the direction of your nose.... That way you won't burn yourself
Great stuff! I am surprised to didn't take it a step further and show what happens when you mix Hydrogen and Chlorine back together and expose to a high power UV light! :)
Grant Thompson, can you do an experiment where you make a charger for a phone through a lemon, one time I tried it, and it didn't work. Can you do it, I want to see if it really works
Grant you should use the wafting technique when smelling chemicals its much safer than sticking your nose over it directly. Especially when you involve others in your experiments. Interesting video though, thanks.
Also for the people at home who don't have access to carbon rods you can get them in old carbon zinc batteries, or just use the inside of a pencil which is graphite but it will still work.
Years ago in high school chemistry class we were learning about redox reactions by creating hydrogen and oxygen gas using electrodes in salt water. The teacher instructed us not to turn the power packs above 8v or something (maximum of 12v). Needless to say all the boys thought they'd speed things up and turn the nob to 12v. There is a point at 8-10v or thereabouts where C2 and not O2 forms at the anode, and a couple in the class got sore eyes and noses. Great teacher!
TheRolemodel1337, nice memory, i forgot to bring that up, but everyone remembers him drinking bleach right? Btw he trolled us, that wasn't bleach he drank.
My brother made me sniff some after watching this video. I refused, but then I accidentally breathed a ton of it in when he shoved it against my nostril. Went to hospital, was told that I had gotten chlorine poisoning... PLEASE PUT GADGET TUTORIALS ON YOUR CHANNEL AGAIN!!!
For All of you saying he was drinking bleach he wasn't!!! He put it in his mouth as it CAN be used as MOUTHWASH!!!! So yeah.....That's all I wanted to say
Reminds me a scenario when I had sniffed the Chlorine gas evolved during one of the experiments of Qualitative Inorganic Analysis. It was indeed irritating to the nostrils. But the happiness was confirmed when the unknown salt showed positive Chromyl Chloride Test and thus, chloride ion knocked out !!!
Love the video. Chlorine when mixed together with water actually makes HCl. If you wanted to make bleach you mix chlorine with sodium hydroxide and water.
Great video, basically how a saltwater pool works, only difference is a Hayward t30 generator is 300+ bucks which is far more than a 6v battery and some plastic bottles
you can put iron dust into water wich will bond the oxygen to the iron and creating the bubbles of hydrogen. you can speed up this process by flowing electrisity through it.
I first experimented with this about 25 years ago. I later went to college and got an engineering degree, during which time I learned that this is a voltage driven process, not a current driven process. If you want it to go faster, simply increase the voltage. It does not need much current. You can use a small DC voltage transformer that puts out, say, 40 V to get the job done much faster. Oh, and as somebody else said, waft, don't sniff.
Grant if you want plumes of chlorine gas, mix rubbing alcohol (isopropanol) with pool chlorination tablets, and wait for a few minutes. Get ready to RUN!!

as a Chemistry student ,i can confirm
Wafting saves lives.
Don't worry they are professionals.

Blast FM waft don't whiff
Blast FM don't u hear he said chlorine is heavy n it won't just go out from the top
Doesnt matter, you are still supposed to waft. Chlorine is a potent murder gas.
Blast FM you sound like my science teacher
Jayden Peterson my science teacher gave us colored water and i tasted it and then he said it was antifreeze
I wish Grant was a teacher at my school
Zane Wong We would die...Our brains will burst
Zane Wong, I think you would want to have my science teacher he let's us play games on our computers and he doesn't care what we do.
I can imagine it already..

XDD
Zane Wong Sup Grant Thompson it is me Grant. He knows who I am. I'll be on his channel soon.

I'm smelling a Darwin Award for this channel!
So true.

90% of the comments are triggered because he sniffed chlorine and also complaining about how it was used in ww1
Sketching Scamper ha
This is a real cool video. This is a simple way of showing how salt generators work on commercial pools and spas!
Aye notification squaaaad, You finally back "king" 😂
THIS WAS SO COOL!!! I'm definitely gonna ask my science teacher about this and the effects of it!
*Puts to bleach lips*
wow I can already taste that
*Proceeds to take a swig of the bleach*
His brother looks like that guy from dude perfect
Eclipse Eduardo Ty?
Eclipse Eduardo He maybe is him?
his voice is different
tyler's sounds more "youthful" if that makes sense
Eclipse Eduardo - Which one? There's like 6....
Well I guess you could say that Grant Thompson actually drank bleach?
Thank you Grant. I have been wanting to try this experiment out fora while, as the chemistry is sound.
Hmmm..
"Don't sniff chlorine."
*sniffs chlorine later*
Those kids sniffing 'chlorine' like its a drug xD
Spaghetti 420 true 😂
Spaghetti 420 honestly I've inhaled so much chlorine ( because Im a swimmer) it doesn't bother me anymore
We miss you brother. Great Person.
I've accidentally sniffed chlorine gas too... And then I started coughing for 2 days, only by a little whiff. It's not an element to mess around with!
Bernler75 Chlorine gas was used in WW 1 as a poison gas that killed people in one of the most painful ways possible
Bernler75 I hope you ok...
Bernler75 it burns your lungs litterly burns the and makes you cough them up with blood (painful way to go)
Has grant ever pinned or comment on a fans comment?
I can only pin one comment, so I pin the contest link. But I do read comments, and reply when I can
First time a i've been replied to :O
skippi 99r NICE UNDERTALE PIC
Frazerer I don't think
Frazerer yes
I love how none of them "waft" it to their noses, they just put their faces right over the bottle and sniff it all in
Today we will be making bleach and drinking it
jk
he discovered new challenge 1000 degree screw driver vs plastic lol
Don't give the Internet ideas. XD
Great stuff! I am surprised to didn't take it a step further and show what happens when you mix Hydrogen and Chlorine back together and expose to a high power UV light! :)
Wouldn't the chlorine mixed with water create hydrochloric acid since there is no sodium to make sodium hypochlorite
Looked it up it makes Hcl and hclo almost bleach
NaOH + HClO -> NaClO + H2O
nyx211 where did the NaHO come from
From electrolysis of salt water. 2 NaCl + 2H2O -> Cl2 + H2 + 2 NaOH
nyx211 wot?
3:45, my friends in college used to say that. LOL
i would appreciate a video on how to use this to sanitize fresh water, dishes, and other things safely. this would be great for survival.
Next video: Sniffing HCN (Zyklon B)
you are aware that inhaling chlorine converts some of the fluids in your mucus linings into hydrochloric acid, right?
Widg3t's Widgets i think he's very well aware of it, he's a scientists after all lol
whoah i needed HCL.Thank you man :)
He isn't a scientist. I have yet to see him explain any of these things he does. He goes online to find stuff and replicates it, that's all.
@@michaelloges8703 No, he thinks of experiments
Thank you Mr. Grant for enlightening my day !

Rest in peace my friend. We loved you so much, I hope you can see that now, if you did not before.
Grant Thompson, can you do an experiment where you make a charger for a phone through a lemon, one time I tried it, and it didn't work. Can you do it, I want to see if it really works
can you teach us how to disinfect water so it's drinkable with chlorine gas
Lord Vladimir XD
You just need 3 drops of bleach for each liter of water and also u need to wait half hour before drinking it and don't forget to mix it
Grant you should use the wafting technique when smelling chemicals its much safer than sticking your nose over it directly. Especially when you involve others in your experiments. Interesting video though, thanks.
Not quite sure if there´s anything healthy to sniff...
hole - 1st drill press channel cocaine, obviously
+Karl Betcher I don't think that's healthy, but definitely fun.
hole - 1st drill press channel let's go on adventure!
that's why you gotta waft it like in chemistry class
So he actually drank bleach
lol
Straight into my survival library! Thanks for the video!

Also for the people at home who don't have access to carbon rods you can get them in old carbon zinc batteries, or just use the inside of a pencil which is graphite but it will still work.
Do you know if carbon fiber would work for this? I can find carbon fiber rods super easy...
"Not the smartest idea, but it's for science."

Phoenix ECKS DEE
still the best, king of random!!
your vids make more sense than any life hacker's out there!! way to go!
where are all of the bleach accounts saying "drink me" when you need them
Exactly. XD
When chlorine reacts with water:
2H20 + 2Cl2 -> 4HCl + O2
So when you sniffed the chlorine you made acid in your nose and lungs :D
Here's another reaction that happens: 2H2O+Cl2=2HOCl+H2
Another one:
H2O + Cl2 = HCl + HClO
I bet Grant just made the day of every single 'Bleach' users
Wait a sec, how did he know what bleach tasted like?
Mr. StealUrGold you don't?
He must be trying to get rid of his kids
