Do speed cameras make NYC roads safer, or are they just a money grab?

- We've all seen speed cameras on our streets, and maybe you've gotten a ticket. They're located within a quarter mile of school zones, and they cost you $50 but no points on your license. But critics say they're just a money grab. So we wanted to know, do speed cameras really make our roads safer? CBS News New York's Dick Brennan hit the streets to find out as part of our new series, "Question Everything."
Nothing to do with safety, it is all about revenues, money grab
To Gamer Javed: If the punishment were higher, careless drivers would certainly consider citizens, cutting insurance and medical costs,
and putting dollars back into people's pockets:
A win-win situation *also* for the public.
A full circle *SAFETY* amelioration.
It’s a money grab , why is a speeding ticket ($50) lower than the cost of a parking ticket ($75-$180) if it was really about safety ?
And why is it no points on license and driving record?
Because they cannot prove who was driving. They can only prove who owns the car. Why they receive the ticket in the mail Did you just learn something new today?
Dear Daniel: The cost will get there.
Its a money grab. If you care about safety then put speed bumps on the road, but damn, no money can be made from that. And the reckless drivers have ghost/ fake plates anyway. They'll speed through all the lights but i bet they'll slow down for a speed bump
Speed bumps are good in neighborhoods but not on busy street Captain numbnuts.
They are a money grab
Money Grab for sure. Diblasio said these speed cameras were going to be on during school hours. now 24/7
To SlawKingog, DiBlasio is not here anymore. The more cheats and criminals we catch continuously -- the safer society should be.
You see how state controlled media works? They interviewed a woman who's husband was not killed by speeding. The young politician legit talked about invading your privacy and property by installing a device to limit your speed. A lower speed limit on service roads is idiotic
Not True
very true 👋👋👋👋
Money grab… they were suppose to be for school zones and school hrs then it went to everywhere 24/7 … i dont know a school open from 9 pm to 6 am
No they weren't. That's the truth. The school zone nonsense was just PR propaganda to get the tip in before they do what their intentions have always been and ram it all the way in.
They're actually illegal without the proper study before installing it at that certain light... oh wait, can I say the word illegal???
Money grab, if they used 1/4 of the revenue from these cameras we would solve all pot holes
These school speed tickets are 24 hours 7 days a week….crazy
CBS asking it's NYC viewers about a serious issue is hilarious. They will always choose no laws and free stuff
We work for everything in New York City it's not a poor red state looking for hand outs from the government
You must be one of the city officials who is getting their pockets lined by the revenue from the speed cameras.

People don’t like when laws are enforced 100% with zero discretion.
If you don’t want a ticket, don’t speed 🤯
That doesn't make the roads safer because most of the reckless drivers have plate covers and ghost plates. The people in charge know this and instead of installing speed bumps which would only save lives they choose to go the less safer more lucrative route.
@@andrewrossnagel9433 Agreed, If you want to live in a delusional state that just because someone is speeding they deserve a ticket that is terrible logic, like what if its an emergency.
City worker spotted
@@DBONPCit’s not really delusional to want to see a law enforced 🤷🏻♂️
911 is there if you need it, we unfortunately have this mindset that emergencies, like medical, are excused, as so many people choose to drive as a result of the exorbitant costs of ambulances in this country.
At the end of the day though, the speed limit is the speed limit, and if you need to endanger the lives of other NYers by speeding to your emergency, then drop those dollars in the bucket so that $$ can be used on physical changes to make the roads safer overall.
Actually it does. If folks are aware the camera is there the less likely chance you will charge the yellow light or speed thru the intersection. You want to speed take your car to the track. Run17's all day long if you wish
They don’t catch Santa because his sled is above their viewpoint. Santa is a great sky driver. Learn to travel with Santa.
This creates more road rage. It does not help the situation. This is not safe at all because sometimes you could be driving and out of nowhere 25 mph and people will break. Check you in front of you just because they don’t want to get a ticket that’s how you pause more accidents, not benefiting anybody but the government
Not only is it a money grab, it actually makes everyone LESS safe. You have to keep looking down at your speedometer and taking your eyes off the road and on top of that people who know about the cameras will slam on their brakes either forcing everyone behind them who might not know about the camera to also slam on their brakes or cause a rear end collision
Whoever that person is talking about, we're going to force you. Somebody vote him out of the office. Give him something better to do. He's crazy😂
Probably a little of both. They know drivers will speed. For some drivers they are cautious a bit more reducing speed for most drivers.
It is a money grab. The 25 mph speed limit causes traffic delay, as if there isn’t enough delays already. Drivers gets impatient or frustrated due to this and do things that they wouldn’t do on a regular basis.
Everything is a money grab in nyc.
Dear Akumsaprtn, Will reduced crime make you feel good?
Would it help if you didn't contribute?
My accident that totaled my Subaru was caused by speed cameras. I was driving on Hegemans in east NY heading east bound and a driver driving on shefeild went through a stop sign at full speed.i was wondering why she was going so fast when she hit me. Turns out she was avoiding the speed cameras on Pennsylvania Ave. So speed cameras have caused speeders to fly down side streets.
"Slower is not safer" because it's an illusion. People will drive at whatever speeds they feel is safe. There was that study where people were driving, eg, 70 in a 55, and "blood in the streets!!!" warnings were against raising the limit to 65. It *was* raised, and the average speed only increased by 1-2mph to 71-72 or so, *NOT* 80.
Artificially lowering speed limits just instills contempt for speed-limit laws, *PROVEN* because so few people actually obey them. When few if any people obey a particular law, the problem's *not* with the people, but with the law itself.
You are talking about highways, the speed cameras are located on local streets with tons of pedestrians.
@@HardNougat And a wide-open boulevard that looks like it can easily handle 35-40 is regulated down to 20-25. At least Queens Blvd has those fences to keep smoothbrain fools from crossing in the middle of the block between intersections. Most other streets don't. So artificially low speed limits punish drivers for smoothbrained pedestrians competing for Darwin Awards.
Money grab!
Quarter mile of school zone? That's how it started. Now they are everywhere and turned on 24 hours a day.
Left turn incidents is more about A-pillar blind spot than speed.
This creates more road rage. It does not help the situation. This is not safe at all because sometimes you could be driving and out of nowhere 25 mph and people will break. Check you in front of you just because they don’t want to get a ticket that’s how you pause more accidents, not benefiting anybody but the government we should do a California did start breaking those speed cameras, one by one let’s see if they’re gonna replace all of them
There is a reason why retail store don't hide the camera because if customer see it most likely they won't steal. So why most speed camera hide behind pole or something that you can't see it.
Exactly, atleast let it be known it just seems like a cash grab
There are big black letters under the speed limit signs telling you that the camera is there, are you blind?
@HardNougat I may be a little blind. But I think maybe you can't read properly or you did not understand what I said in my comment
Its not for safety, its for revenue. All you have to do is hide the plate or use a fake one. They dont do anything about the other rampant crimes do they?
Took you guys this long to realize since day one it’s a money grab
It's also a safety issue.
MONEY GRAB. PERIOD
I don’t believe the statistics showing that people aren’t speeding after the installation of cameras are accurate. The decrease in summonses likely isn’t due to reduced speeding, but rather because people are using apps like Waze or are familiar with the camera locations. Drivers can easily trick the system by briefly reducing speed just 5 to 10 feet after the camera pole and then resuming their usual speed right after passing it.
If people are slowing down once the waze app tells them that there is a camera, doesn't that mean the speed camera is working?
@@jordy65056he/she is saying that it only slows down where there is speed cameras present. People still gonna speed when there isn't one around.
@@cdchannel exactly so speed cameras are doing their job, if that's the case we just need more cameras everywhere...I'm just pointing out the fact that if people slows down for cameras then that means they DO work at reducing speed
It actually works and they are taking advantage of it working
If the program worked they wouldn’t make money
I was literally going 2 mi above the speed limit. Didn't even realize I went across a speed camera when I went across the light. Next thing I know I got to take it in my house. No mention of a speed camera apparently either so it's definitely just more money ways to drain people
Dear Miss Pettiee. Maybe you meant you got a ticket in your mailbox. 2 miles over the speed limit will be dismissed.
It’s totally about a money grab. New York City never has speeding cameras and the limit was 30 miles an hour.
Im surprised the carmeras wernt vandalized by now
Someone do a background on the senator and see how much that forced speed limiter company paid (lobbying) him. A politician never speaks their own words.
It's "one and done" because once you get bit and then know where the camera is, you slow down to 20 until you're just out of range, then speed up to 30, 35, or whatever, even right past the "school" in question. They're scarecrows.
you can go 34 if the limit is 25
@@kevinbatista1278 They don't calibrate those things, so best is to make sure you're well under the trip point Just In Case.
@joeschmo622 yeah I make sure just in case
Everyone does 70 in the LIE LMAOO
70 should be the "speed limit", these damn tlc drivers wanna be doing 35 in the left lane with no awareness of anything around them
Speed Cameras In The UK 🇬🇧 And Australia 🇦🇺 Are Worse Than NYC Because The Have Possible Demerit Point Higher Fines Up To $500 And Possible Suspension And Driving Bans While NYC Has No Demerit Points And $50 Fine
Dont text and drive, but make sure you keep your eyes glued to that speedometer. We know whats best for you
Definitely a money grab
It’s definitely a money grab
speed voilation is down 30%,do you have speed cam on every blocks?
Got a ticket for going 45 on a 25 right next to the Pelham bay park area on the Bruckner service road , no sidewalk on one side , no crossings and no traffic on the road when I did it , and I don’t see how it’s not safe , I stopped on every light and felt perfect going at 45
But hey i respect and won’t go against it , should still go 25 whether u like it or not
you can go 34, once you hit 35 on a 25, the camera will get you
It’s a blatant money grab. Police officers usually gives out speeding tickets. With the speed cameras doing their job there should be less police officers correct?
create congestions, then try to charge congestion pricing for more money
Buy a radar detector those who cost like 300 and use it every time you drive it will alert you of a speed camera for even thousands feet's and you just slow down when you reaching to the camera place and once you pass you just start speeding again it's simple, just play the game it's simple I pla it and I have not received no speeding tickets for years they just loosing money with me 😅
I doubt that. Be learn-ed, doing the right thing would save you 300 dollars, get you a clear conscience, and not turn yourself into a silly child.
Exactly no points on your license so they keep you ticketing you ect
You do the speed limit and there’s a chance you get run over or shot for blocking traffic. People are nuts
Money grab
Do a plate search for violations and you will see cars on the road with $2000+ total violations.
Cars can be lien-ed on.
If speeders are willing to pay for the privilege of speeding, why shouldn't New York capitalize on it?
Definitely money makers. Unfortunately Chicago is going the same route like New York
No
bruh their all over my city in Canada and its totally a money grab, our city cant control money and so they just use these speed cams to cover some of their ridiculous spending.
Waze app on your phone shows speed and red loght cams
They are a just money graber. That's my opinion.
Its both
They don’t make the streets safer because it distracts drivers even more. Drivers have to keep looking at the speedometer every few seconds to make sure they’re not speeding so they don’t get a ticket. It’s one of the reasons why I left NY.
😂clown😂 don’t speed and you won’t get a ticket
They ain't safe at all , scooters are zooming pass me while I'm doing 25 to 30 causing cars to come to a stop and cause jams or arguments etc not cool at all NY
Don't break the law?
That's right theyvshouod go to speedesters in the highways not on narrow roads.

Its all about the Benji, Baby!
In Brooklyn there is a speed camera on a block heading towards the bridge , the answer really relies on where the camera is placed
To JohnDoe: The judge will use his discretion: Decisions are not churned, devoid of forethought.
Clearly about money Mta and the city is the most money hungry
I would love it if someone take the time to show how many speed traps included camera use and hidden cops on black and minorities communities compare to white neighborhoods, I lived in NYC most of my life and it seems unfair since if you another color community there’s more cameras in your hood then let’s say people that have fair skin. 😢money grabber all the way, camera where in place for school time only 6am-7pm but now they cashing in 24hr to make middle or poor class even more broke. There’s might be time when New Yorker just leave this pain and suffering n move to near state or south. Let’s end the double standards, if there’s more cameras in black neighborhoods then there should be equal amount camera in white neighborhoods let’s keep everyone safe ❤❤ great news
Dear MBNY642, You wrote: _"But now [they are] cashing in [24 hours] to make the middle or poor class even more broke._
So, the broke and poor are driving hastily, burning gas at all hours of the day *and night,* in well-conditioned maintained vehicles they feel confident in.
Send some appreciation for the states showing more concern for the downtrodden denizens.
With as much crime as New York City has they must be there weither or not they charge you it’s good to have cameras monitor who’s driving on our roads helps track criminals when they commit crimes keep them fee or not we need more cameras and monitoring
Putting the cameras on streets with nearly no pedestrian traffic is a money grab. By schools its acceptable.
Why? When school is in session are the kids out playing tag in the street?
Are these cameras not ticketing people in "school zones" when school is oot?
They aren't doing it for kids safety at all. They're doing it to steal people's money and easily convince the public that it's for safety. Let's put it and push it in "school zones". Who's against keeping our children safe? That's their PR spin to steal your money.
It's also their justification to launch these programs in the first place. Before they can truly do what they want and implement them everywhere else. Ya know. For your safety.
No it's not for safty it's a money grab!!!!!
Money grab. I wish i was getting a cut of the robbery of what the city makes in these cameras.
Camaras has reduced speed, but has made drivers to look everywhere but the road in the lookout of any of this money grabbers.
To Gary, Dear Daniel: Where else is there to look where you are driving; but the road ahead of you -- and your common sense internal speedometer?
@@eddyvideostar The camaras are not in the road, they are on the sidewalk and have drivers looking over there instead of the road, you misunderstood me.
@@garydaniel29 I interpreted your comment as if drivers are distracted by looking for speed cameras (that you called money grabbers) instead of focusing on the road ahead of them.
my suggestion is to put more cops on the streets given out those tickets, instead of hidden cameras, putting it in places where it's not necessarily safe to go slower, motorcycles that can drive in front of you and the camera would think it's you because it can't judge you like a human do, in top of that real criminals don't have plates so it's only citizens getting affected by this, so yeah I don't think cameras are the way.
@@garydaniel29 The cops already have their hands full with other situations.
I'm glad you mentioned "real criminals" where *anything can happen* with damned if do and don't' situations occurring over a speeding ticket that the cameras could take care of with less detriment.
- 25 MPH limit, dont go over 31.
- Drivers pass the camera a bit then folks start speeding again.
- Narrower lanes in One Way streets = more chance for accidents. I.E Parked cars swinging out doors, Pedestrians running into street and driver having no space to avoid, Delivery cars/taxis blocking.
Cameras should be put in zones for school, hospital, government agencies, and any other public service facilities.
Also in areas where there are straight and long roads where drag racing can happen.
Nothing more than a money maker for the City.

Total money grab. They put cameras where they know (and road conditions permit) speeding exists. Not where it’s known to be dangerous.
They make streets safer the same way congestion pricing reduces traffic lol
As a nyc cab driver I'm very ok with those cameras for the only reason and most important one that is the police are not pulling me over much as they used to do before the cameras (because the cameras are generating the crash and a lot of it)...that means less worries about points court hearings, suspensions and paying those Weasley traffic lawyers.😊

By me, in Queens, they removed 2 speed cameras near elementary schools & relocated them. Why? My guess is it's not about safety; they just don't generate revenue there because very few speed near schools! There's a learning curve as well, once you know where the camera is you slow for it and speed immediately before & afterwards. In the UK they cut these down and/or paintbal them.
Don’t like it just stop voting for these guys
These speed cameras are money grab lowering the speed limit like they wanna do in certain areas is 10 MPH 25 MPH is also too slow on all the roadways
