Cleaning the room daily. I also close my closet so essentially it's in a "box" and I leave the dehumidifier on for 24/7. It won't smell if you have a dehumidifier, as it will absorb humidity. Also unless you live in a country with multiple seaons, then my recommendation is to ensure you can use your clothes as much as possible, otherwise it's it's just taking up space :).
