Can we please return opera to its former elegance by enforcing dress codes. People should look beautiful on both sides of the curtain. We come to the opera to see and hear beauty,so we should be respectful by also being beautiful to look at.

Terrible idea if we want Opera and theatre to live on. We need to behead the pretentious stereotype - I myself personally enjoy wearing elegant attire. However not everyone can afford those luxuries. Opera is about Opera not enforcing a dress code or impressing others.

@@sams.3823 elegant attire doesn’t have to be expensive per se. Nowadays hoodies and T-shirt can cost $1000 and they’re still ugly

@@sams.3823 Actually nowadays, all orchestras live on through patronage, not selling tickets, which makes it cater to mostly the upper class. This is mainly from the fact that this type of music employs so many high skilled artists that if they were to sell tickets at the most reasonable price, it would still not be affordable by most. They NEED to be pretentious to create an exclusive atmosphere that rich corporations and powerful people would donate and patronize the orchestra.

I went to the opera in Barcelona a month ago and decided to put on a gray suit; after all, it wasn't very late and I knew a tuxedo would be too much in this day and age. Since I didn't want to look "too business" while still having a gray suit on, I decided to go for a paisley ascot even though I feared that would be too casual and oh my... I was surprised by the fact that most men were not wearing even a jacket. Lots of t-shirts and even some sandals and shorts.
Our society has dressed down a lot, but I certainly didn't expect to see this at the opera house too.

The Opera is meant to be an opulent experience. Dress up/ dress to the 9s. Jeans and tee shirts belong at the club not the Opera.
