    I was diagnosed with cluster headaches a little over a year ago. This pain is unlike anything I have ever experienced and is hard to put into words. The fact that it is considered a "headache" is simply not true. It is the embodiment of death toying with your brain, seeing how much pain you can tolerate until you finally say enough, and end your suffering yourself. This is where the term "suicide headache" comes into play. There are days/weeks where all the joy and happiness in my life has been drained due to nonstop excruciating pain. I am a chronic sufferer that only receives days of relief at a time. I often wonder and worry if this is what the rest of my life is going to entail, and that thought alone is enough to send me into a spiral of depression.

    Excellent set of specialists .. I had cluster headache attacks ( 9 or so) a couple of years ago, they were horrendous, the 1st one I had I thought I was having a stroke. the doctors, nurses, neurologist in London weren't that great, I don't think even cluster headaches were mentioned. It took me months of research and fact finding to figure it out. If they start again (they were episodic), around the orbits of the eye, down one half of the face etc. if they ever start again, I may fly out to the US and get a consultation with one / both of these seemingly excellent doctors.

    Thank you so very much for these incredible insights to the most shocking brain pain I can imagine. It’s so important for everyone Dr’s family and friends to understand exactly what these are? When we say oh I have a headache no body imagines your brain is on fire. Concentrated behind one eye. In order for this to be addressed we desperately need pain management . That helps. I am currently receiving help for the first time since 1981 . Am serious this is not a joke I was in a psychiatric hospital as a result of this and they were giving me grade 10 meds. I was out of it , but that’s not living and so much has changed since then. Thank goodness. I have been a sufferer of these nasty headaches since the 90s.
    I saw a neurologist in the mid 2000s, and was diagnosed with Cluster Headaches.
    Most recently I went to a neurologist, and I just heard about the Hemicrania Continua.
    I have taken Relpax, Sumitriptan, and most other medicines outside over the counter medicines.
    What I have found that worked very well, is Fiorocet with codeine. I live in the east coast and the found out in 2014 that the crisp winter cold helped very well with the headaches. Combined with Fiorocet with codeine, my pain was gone within 30 minutes. I am well aware that doctors and or numerologist do not like to prescribe medicine with narcotics. But if I may implore what has worked for me, may not work with other people who may suffer from cluster or hemicrania

    I think one of the most excruciating thing to happen while in a cycle are the understanding of work colleagues and employers. I’ve had the unfortunate experience of having to secretly record an incident of me having an attack while my boss storms in to complain. I quit that job but it still scares me to have to go through something like that again. No matter how much you try to explain it some people will always think it’s just a migraine

    • @MSM4U2POM
      @MSM4U2POM 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Snap. I have lost all but two jobs I have ever had because of this condition, because let's face it, who is going to emply someone who is off work for three months or so a year? You simply cannot function during a cluster episode, either during the attacks (for obvious reasons), or between them because you are so exhausted through lack of sleep. And your experience with people you work with is very familiar too. They just think you're a drama queen, and one boss actually said so to my face. It's depressing to think that such people exist, but unfortunately he was pretty typical of the kind of ignoramus you will find at the top of many businesses.

Eventually, they stopped, after occurring every night, at about the same time, waking me from sleep. I am 55 now, and hope they never come back again!

    I had cluster headaches in my twenties. Imitrex injections worked Then they went away. Im now in my fifties and the beast has returned. Had one this evening. I feel it lurking behind my right eye. I have an appointment with my doctor today and I'll beg him for an Imitrex prescription, even though It'll cost me $500 a shot. The pain is just too severe. During this last attack my mother asked me if she should call an ambulance. I told her to f!@$ off. Unacceptable. But she's very understanding and is watching videos like this to realize that the pain is so severe that it can turn you into a different person. Mr. Hyde.

      Hey, how are you now? I’ve been suffering with these for 33 years and just finally got the diagnosis. I can identify with the ambulance comment. I’ve actually been taken out in an ambulance due to these headaches. The neurologist that just gave me the diagnosis is going to give me Botox injections to bathe the nerves in my neck and head. Also, he has ordered occipital nerve blocks. The pain has been so bad for me in the past, that I use a hammer and pound myself in the thigh to divert my attention away from the head and neck pain during one of these.

    I have had Clusters for around 8+ years and it took around 5 years to get diagnosed.
    I've just finished this years cycle (bout I believe they call it). I suffer from Episodic Cluster Headaches, and it lasts for around 3-4 months.
    I get 3-5 per day ranging from a "feeling" to so much pain my body tenses up to the point where I twitch, can't take a piss and finally vomit.
    I get around 2 hours of sleep per night during the bouts and will always be woken up by the pain. I only sleep because I have to. The fear of the pain waking me up compels me to stay awake for as long as possible as I know I will be in pain for 30+ minutes, anywhere up to an hour and a half.
    Now the good news, I had the injection in the back of my head this year. It was supposed to last around 3 months but instead it was around 1 month. However I had a month of pain relief which I was absolutely grateful for.
    After that wore off I was offered Sumatriptan which works brilliantly. I started with the injection. Took away the pain in seconds however the side effects were massive in my case. From nose bleeds to itching skin from head to toe, to boiling blood to vomiting.
    So I tried the nasal form. Perfect. It has next to no side effects and took away the pain in around 4 minutes.
    Only bad thing about Sumatriptan was the waiting time. In the UK I have to wait around 2 weeks for a GP appointment then get the drug ordered in which takes around 3 days, all for 6 nasal sprays. 1 week of pain relief then 2 with out.
    Edit: Also I trialed this year and it works most of the time for me. Sleep sitting up. I strapped myself to a chair when sleeping and most of the time I have a better sleep. Now it doesn't stop the headaches, however I would get around 6 hours of sleep per night rather than 2. On top of that the headaches thought out the day would be less harsh.

      You may want to try 10mg of Melatonin supplement before bed to combat the late night rude awakening attacks. It actually stopped all my late night attacks during my last cycle but is a hit or miss during the cycle I'm in now. I'm in the US so I don't know what the legality of it is in the UK but it is something worth looking into.
      Stay headstrong and pain free.

    As I have learned more and more about cluster headaches and hemicrania continua. I was also wondering can the things that I have been through as a child, be a culprit to what is playing out today as an adult. As I will explain, my dad was not always a very nice person. Quite abusive and I was always getting slapped or punched in the face from a child to my early teens. And the reason why I mention this, is because I have seen talks discussing the Pituotary gland. But I am just curious as to what any triggers may be to ignite such pains in the head.
    When I do get my pains, it begins with a small throbbing pain, behind my left eye. And if I do not take something right away, it becomes an onslaught of piercing, throbbing pains which shoot down my tooth. I can become super uncomfortable, and in need of the cold. Cold floor or rag. I will not say that I get violent, but if I am bothered while I am in pain. That is not a good thing. I have to have like milk or something heavy in order to take the medication, if not. I will vomit and have hot and cold sweats. I have had the pains last for less than a week up to close to two months straight. Everyday almost like clock work if I did not take my meds. And when it comes, it's like any where between midnight to 4 am where I almost literally jump out of bed.
    Maybe this info maybe useful to your studies, I don't know. But what I do know, this s💯💯t hurts like most people wouldn't believe.

    So I'm having headache directly above my eye only left side closer up to my hairline sometimes it radiates to the back of my head same side but mostly just a throbbing pain in that one spot..I sometimes will tap it hard because it annoys me so much. I wake up with it usually 5 am or 6am in the morning and it will occur sometimes in the evening after dinner ..If I take pain killers Advil gel with Tylenol with codeine or sometimes a 5mg oxycodone with Advil it will subside in about 30 40 min and it will often not bother me the rest of the day until the later evening. Its almost daily now and its been about 4 months occasionally I get a day without out. I do have dry eye syndrome I use eye drops to lubricate my eyes but I do find at night my eyes tear especially the eye on the side of the headache . I will sometimes have a stuffy nose only in the morning on that side but it quickly goes away as soon as I get up from bed. Otherwise no sinus trouble at all. I have never smoked and I don't drink any alcohol. Not sure if that is pertinent. I immediately wonder about tumours after becoming daily headaches...but then I saw the information about cluster and I wondered if that's possibly what it is... I've never been prone to headache before but my dad suffered with migraines all his life. My oldest son had migraine as a pre teen but grew out of it. Is it normal for cluster headache to go away when you take pain medication or Advil? Mine is very treatable if I take something but I hate taking it everyday. Thanks for any insight anyone has to offer.

      +Kelly Chandley I have that same issue. They went ahead and gave the verapamil at very high doses (usually), back in my 20s and 30s. My resting pulse would be down in the 40s and even 30s sometimes. They did a stress test, ekg's and so on, but my heart never stopped. I would get light-headed when I stood up, but that happened a lot anyway with my low BP. The verapamil would work for a while, then quit; so we'd have to switch to a new combo, usually with prednisone taper to help during transition to effective dose of new stuff. But often lots of uncontrolled time in between. Now that I'm in m 50s I can't tolerate a lot of meds including verapamil at high enough doses to help.

    Ok if i tell you my symptoms can you help me out
    pain in left eye runny red eye. runny nose. veryyy painful in the left eye moves around left side of head, neck, temple, top of head basically starts in left eye and pain is awful can last 30 mins to over an hour. Last night I had four attacks in one night! Absolutely terrible I am missing out on everything because I get no sleep at night because I get attacks early hours of the morning I can be asleep and it will wake me up with the pain. A couple of times I have been sick from the nausea of it. My heart starts beating funny and out of time (palpitations) the pain is unbearable and no pain killers work at all. I hold an ice pack to it which probably doesn't help but it gives me like 2% comfort from the pain. I have told my doctor it is cluster headaches because it seems exactly the same to that. I have suffered this before during fall time for two years now had about a 10 months free of it but it always seems to come back in end of august/september time. But all of a sudden it came back very very bad about a week and a half ago I thought I was having a stroke or was going to die and has been happening every night since. I cannot cope with it anymore. What are my best options to get my life back and stop this horrible pain? My doctors never give me the help I need and I have to get them to let me see a neurologist and mri scan to really see what is going on but they never take me serious and palm it off as tension or stress which it isn't because it doesn't matter if i am relaxed or stressed it still happens. I've had them removed 3 times. The gamma knife finally knocked it according to last year's MRI. Now 5 years after gamma knife, I'm having what seems to be cluster headaches. Could it be my pituitary acting up again? I don't know because I never had headaches even when I had a pituitary adenoma but I'm going to find out because this is misery.

    Two years ago I started looking into my frequent headaches and thought I probably had cluster headaches, so I started keeping a diary of them. Then after a couple of months the headaches became more and more, until now the past year I've had about 330 days of headaches, where the remaining days are primarily ones I simply slept through. I'm no stranger to headaches, I had a cyst in my head causing spinal fluid build-up about 6 years back. That is pure pain. All in all I've gone more than a decade with various kinds of headaches. Funny, I have this memory from when I was a kid asking my mother what headaches were like, wondering if I'd ever have any myself.
    Last month I read about Hemicrania Continua, and I certainly recognized myself in most of the symptoms, except that eye watering and rhinorrhea are more pronounced on the opposite side of my face, with occasional pain on that side as well, however that feels different from the more constant one that is on my right.
    At any rate, I just started taking Indomethacin today, so I'll know soon enough if it's HC or not. I only hope I can rid myself of headaches one of these days.

    I absolutely hate these headaches!
    It feels like someone driving a ice pick into the side of my head around the temple and squeezing the back of my eye and the side of my head is cracking open! I also get hot sweats and dull ache down the side of my neck. I've taken Imitrex(Sumatriptan) but don't like how jittery it makes me feel. Like a turbo shot of caffeine! Relpax(Eletriptan ) is ok, but takes too long to work. Usually kicking in about the time the headache is on it's way out and already been suffering for 30min! Maxalt(Rizatriptan) in it's fast-acting dissolving tablets works very well in the first half a cycle for me. For whatever reason, the last half of the cycle it doesn't fully relieve the headaches! Usually turning them into a dull, annoying pain that continues for another 30mins. Thing that sucks about Maxalt is that i can only take one a day while i have about 3-8 headaches a day!

    • @Chow-Guy
      @Chow-Guy 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Please see my posts here from January and last week. Also see my ongoing conversation with Fara Kahn. Also, with the Maxalt (Rizatriptan 10mg ODT), try cutting those tiny tablets into 4 pieces with a razor blade and only take one piece per attack. That 1/4 tablet always stopped my attack within 5 minutes, and if it works for you then you are just overdosing for one stupid headache when you could be treating 4 with each tablet, each day. If you would like to try what cured me after 16 years of chronic CH with up to 5 attacks a day, then reply to this message and I will get a notification. I have not had a CH for 23 months now, and it only cost $15 USD, for a prescription antibiotic type drug. It is not yet tested by anybody but myself and I am looking for people to try it to see if it will work for anybody else. What have you got to lose except the fear and the pain?

      Fara - I suffered CH for 16 years and was finally cured. Go to Clusterbusters.com and go to the Forum to see what all they have to say. There are ways to treat CH and you will find them there. Also, look up a post by "DragonKiller" (ME). The post was labeled "What if there was a cure". If you reply to this post here, I will get notification and will be happy to discuss further with you. Do not reply to the DragonKiller post on Clusterbusters, as I have terminated that account.

      @@farakhan7140 Fara, I am putting together a post discussing all of the things that did help me over the years and how to use them, as well as the story of my cure. It will take me ad day or so but I will post it on this website and will also post it a a reply to you. The best thing I can suggest in the meantime is try to get a source of oxygen. I will include the particulars of that treatment in my post. I got mine from a welding shop. If you know any welders ask them if they can get you a tank of oxygen and a regulator. JIM

      Thmkyou so much for taking concern in me I really appreciate it I have already got oxegen tanks the hospital supplies me with them and I take sumutriiptan tablets but still very sick

    • @Chow-Guy
      @Chow-Guy 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@farakhan7140 Fara, - first, I am not a doctor and nothing I suggest is intended to be taken as a doctors advice or as a treatment or cure for any malady. That said as required under US law, I am still working on a total discussion of what has helped me, but for now I want to know that you are using oxygen properly. I was initially prescribed oxygen but it was not what is needed. They gave me a small tank which only offered "supplemental" oxygen. In order for oxygen to work, you must be breathing pure oxygen and nothing but oxygen for the duration of an attack. You must have equipment that will allow you to breath pure oxygen straight from the tank and not allow any outside air. You must also start the oxygen as soon as you feel an attack coming on. For me, it kept the pain at the level it was at the time I started the oxygen. If I was already well into an attack and the pain level was already extreme, the oxygen did not help. If you just have equipment that adds oxygen to outside air as you breathe, it will NOT help.
      Also, with the sumatriptan, if it is not the type that you place under the tongue, which supplies an immediate dose as it dissolves, it will not work for cluster headache. I ended up getting Maxalt ODT 10 mg tablets. (ODT is "oral dissolving tablets") Rizatriptan is the generic form, and you place the tablets under the tongue where they dissolve and are quickly absorbed. They stopped my attacks within 5 minutes and I personally had no side effects. Now for warnings - Rizatriptan can have severe side effects, just like all of the triptan drugs. Knowing this, and also having used Zolmatriptan nasal sprays in the past, I was cautious. The Zolmatriptan did stop my headaches quickly but left me completely "wiped out" like a hangover for hours afterward. Rizatriptan did not have any hangover effect. But I never did take a whole tablet. The tablets are tiny, but on my first time using it I cut the tablet into 4 pieces with a razor blade and took only one small piece at a time. I then put the remaining pieces into an airtight plastic pill bottle for later use. I did occasionally have to use 2 or 3 pieces within a 24 hour period and never had any bad effects. My prescription for these says not to use more than 2 tablets in 24 hours. By cutting the tablets in 4 pieces, it would suggest that I could take up to 8 pieces in 24 hours, but I never needed more than 3. I will add - if you can get this product, read and consider all of the warnings, and I would not suggest that you use this or any other triptan without doctor supervision. Also, even the generic Rizatriptan is pretty expensive here in the US, but by having my doctor give me a prescription for the maximum allowed of 7 at a time, and then searching online for discounts, I was able to get the Rizatriptan for about 5 USD each. Then by using only 1/4 tablet at a time, it was really quite cheap. I pray that this will help you for now.

    No one is talking about hallucinogens. They changed my life. I not only can use them as an abortive treatment, they make the headaches go away for long periods up sometimes 1.5 years. I have had episodic cluster cycles (like my father) since i was 17. Treating them with hallucinogens changed my life. Probably not for everyone but I am upset it is not even part of this discussion.
