I know I said i was going to start your tutorials, I caught covid the day after when I said i was going to start, I will start it tonight, for now im going to try this one.
Note to future folks like me running Ubuntu 20.04, the repo version of Blender is 2.82, 'Trace Image to Grease Pencil' was introduced in Blender v2.91. To get the latest Blender installed for Ubuntu, head here: launchpad.net/~thomas-schiex/+archive/ubuntu/blender and add this repo, update & upgrade. I also installed, in addition to upgrading blender, 'libllvm6.0'. If you've followed the good Professor's previous 'Beginner's Guide to Blender', you will want to copy the startup file from the v2.82 config directory to v2.91 with this: $ cp ~/.config/blender/2.82/config/startup.blend ~/.config/blender/2.91/config/ The add-ons appear to work without having to reinstall them.
I should have also mention that you could do the entire name at once. So by hitting "a" and selecting everything then hitting "alt+f" it fills in everything without the gigantic amount of manual work. But you also need to not merge by distance before that. If you want the amount of vertices to go down afterwards then use the decimate modifier in the modifiers tab.
@@Lolatronn This worked great, though I actually *did* merge before doing it, otherwise it just filled in the middle of the "closed counters" letters like q r o p a d and b. But apart from that, yeah, it worked! Do you know what "Alt-F" actually *does* in Blender?
Trying to work on the snowflake, but when I try to follow along on my computer, the copy that I have downloaded is Blender 4.0 and I keep running into places in your demo videos where the keys that you select do not exist in 4.0 When you convert the signature for the snow flake to trace image to grease pencil; it looks like I have to somehow use 3D Viewport Object~Convert to achieve the transformation? Do you have any updated videos using the newer version of Blender?
@@timhouser9467 I haven't made a tutorial for the whole process, but this may help in learning to use inkscape. After that it's just importing the SVG, converting to a mesh, and... following part 2 of this video when it comes out. th-cam.com/video/fCw5lE_vbbc/w-d-xo.html
hmm... I think it would have been much easier to import the picture in incscape first and use there the bitmap trace. Export it as a svg. When imported in Blender the text should be filled.
So I converted from curve to mesh, and it has gone weird. All of the points in the edit mode have vanished. I can still see the outline, but can't select anything in edit mode. Any ideas?
Check the outliner and be sure you have the mesh object selected. It should have the same name, but have a mesh icon next to it. IIRC it's a triangle with squares on the corner?

Okay so i found a better was of filling in the object. Hitting alt+f does a fill that makes it triangulated. Hope that helps

One year later and it's still not "After Covid". :(

I haven't yet, but if I do it will be on @blenderfor3dprinting
I hope the seams aren't that obvioussssssss. www.3dpprofessor.com/2020/12/10/make-a-custom-snowflake-christmas-ornament-in-blender/
Can you point me in the direction of doing it through inkscape? My laptop won't run Blender 2.91 :(

Yes, that works well.
Now, the modifier chain I use in Part 2 will work either way, and it's kinda fun to be able to test configurations in real time.

@@3dpprofessor That worked thanks!
