  • Carpenter's Symphony No. 1 (1940) was based on an earlier first symphony subtitled "Sermons in Stones" (1916). Technically a single-movement work, the overhauled version of the symphony can be divided into five connected sections.
And what's this? Listen to the Largo (fifth section) at about 15:10. You will hear a familiar tune that is very much a part of our current film culture. I think Mr. Carpenter should get some credit for this.
Performed by the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine
Conducted by the always awesome John McLaughlin Williams
Available with two other Carpenter works on the Naxos label: www.naxos.com/...
    Paintings by Albert Bierstadt (1830-1902)

If all you know of John Alden Carpenter's music are Skyscrapers and Adventures in a Perambulator check out his first symphony. I think you're in for a treat.

Starting at 15:51 you can hear something of Williams's Star Wars theme. A bar-length melodic similarity, anyway.

Holy COW! It is almost a direct steal. But who would know NOW? And Carpenter repeats the theme!!

I wish there were a performance of s song by Carpenter entitled "Sing A Song Of Freedom." I learned it while I was in elementary school over 75 years ago and it instantly became a favorite.

Gorgeous Symphony: love its energy, orchestral color, lyricism, "populism," and optimism! The nature paintings are lovely too.

I wish there were a performance of "Sermons in Stones", for it is radically different than this "first" symphony.

I grew up in Illinois. His music reflects Illinois. Just a beautiful performance.
