Those flat turns that the DR1 did are amazing.

Beautiful footage here especially of the dreidecker. The other wonderful aspect of Rhinebeck is there's no modern buildings in the background.

What engines are they running in these aircraft? They are way too smooth to be original.

The original Nieuport would have had something in the range of 110 horsepower so a common current day opposed four of similar horsepower could be substituted. For the Fokker DvII, it had somewhere in the area of 200 horsepower so a larger current, GA engine could be used but would need to be air cooled, not water cooled like the original German engines. I've recently watched videos of a restored SPAD VII from the era that has a Lycoming 0360 opposed four cylinder of about 180 horsepower which is adequate considering the original Hispano-Suiza V8 was near the same power output. The DVII shown here with the checkerboard paint scheme sounds like an original engine of the period, an inline six cylinder.

Engine size is the same or around that little more in some, if you go too much; you damage the joints out of the bars with too much torque. Because you land with engine power off and on. That is how they fly...just like that in 1917.

@@patcollier4819 Unlike the rotary engines of the period, the real WWI Dvii didn't have an intentional throttle-cut miss so no reason this would need to do that. That little misfire is not period correct nor an asset to the show. If it is intentional, it seems wholly out of place and to an ol' engine mechanic, it's not wise feature either.

Yep, that six cylinder had a miss fire and I'm surprised that he did not put it on the ground immediately. The other Fokker DVII did not miss fire.
