I love the old Datsun's. I've owned 3 510's. IMO.. Stay Nissan/Datsun. I think you should go with a nicely built L20b with the 5-speed w/roadster clutch. Port the head. Nice WEB cam. A nice header and exhaust from Varex Austrailia. (there mufflers have a built in butterfly valve for full open exhaust. They have an app to adjust the butterfly wherever you like. Very sweet for any of your cars.) Then re-use the carbs, but have them re-jetted for the bigger motor. You might need a different intake manifold. I would do all that, or go with a full-on SR20 build. I'd like to get an old 1600 or 200 roadster, and do an SR20 turbo build. Only a dream right now. Keep it up, love the video's A tiny bit more english would be nice.
That truck is nothing short of amazing! I would love to have one like it in my garage. There are just so many great things you can do to a truck like that including installing old school classic wheels like SSR's, Enkei's, and Impuls to make it your own. Japan produced some of the greatest wheels to ever get mounted to a vehicle and it just goes to show that anything from wheels to vehicle designs, Japan was always ahead of it's time. I'd love to see a set of SSR mk1's or mk2's installed on that truck.👍
My pops in 1971 NO LESS!! had a lowered 70 like yours with a built L16 he had the block bored out for 240z pistons it had to be "o" ringed because of blowing head gaskets BUT It ran hard !! If I remember correctly it was a 2055 cc motor those old mikuni setups are RARE my guess is that your motor is a 1600 L head nobody would throw that much into a 1200 or a 1300 motor its a waste of time so, basically GO OLD SCHOOL!!
The best thing you could do to it, is just do exactly what you want, I love this little truck so much and the fact you own it and share it with us is great. I love that your cars are characters on your channel makes them all special, they certainly have more appeal to me than a shed load of Lamborghini Aventadors!
Hi Steve. It’s such a cool looking truck (i have difficulty calling it a truck because we call them utes in Australia - trucks are big units 😁), it’d be a shame to have to replace the motor. Hoping you can save it, make it look cooler and also increase the horsepower a bit. Guess I’ll have to stay tuned 👍🏻

Best regards from Argentina. postscript: with respect to the engine I would disassemble it and see if it is damaged because it seemed to me that one piston was failing and if fuel entered the oil it is likely that one of the rings is damaged or there is a crack somewhere in the piston through which the fuel passes. but if there is no damage or if the damage is repairable it is better that you repair it and keep it in the truck since it is a great engine. Opportunity to fit the 1.8 or 2.0 litre :D My younger brother had a 1200 ute (we dont call them a sunny in Aus) and was going to drop I think an SR18 of some variant into it. He ended up walking away form the project as it needed a fair bit of modification to the firewall to fit it. He ended up with a 120y coupe with an A14. A14 or A15 for a simpler update with good power improvement.
I would first see if there's any internal engine damage. If there isn't , I would rebuild it. I love watching the Hagerty rebuild videos. With regards to the transmission, I would see if a 5 speed would work. If not, I would change up the gearing so the truck isn't revving so high on the highway. Whatever your decision, please film it! Thanks!
I really like the Sunny Truck, but for one thing. The wheel/tire combo. Please source some tires that fit the wheels without the stretched sidewalls. Besides looking silly (in MY opinion) it just doesn't look very safe.
I do think the engine that's in it is already built up because of the Mikuni's and the header. How much it's built up is unknown, until you open that baby up. The oil didn't look watery, as you said. If water get's in the oil, it look brown, and muddy. You might have cracked the head when you overheated or at least blew the head gasket. Seeing the Mikuni's on there though, with the header, makes me believe that they probably put a bigger cam in it, and did some head work. Hope it's not cracked. Whatever you end up doing.... don't throw away the history of this motor. It's worth having it built up and possibly put back in the Sunny, at a later date.
If you don’t rebuild it a carbureted SR or KA would be cool, or if you can fit an L series’s engine in with out cutting up the core support or firewall up.
Hi Steve big thumbs up for the uk I'd keep it original put in fast road cam and vernier pullys Webber 45 up rare exhaust like the sound of it snorting might be what ur after paint cam cover gold accents of it in the bay to flow with decals on body work 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Steve, in Japan is it common to see these trucks with the 510 front end? When I Googled the truck all I saw were trucks with the 110 front end? Also my vote is to keep it original. If you put an over head cam in it, like the American 510s had, it will Americanize the truck. I think it will look better when you open the hood and show people an engine they don't expect to see there. Another thing, the color of the valve cover is right now seems to be the original. All of the Datsuns where I am seem to have that same engine and they are all that same color.
keep the same engine just have it overhauled, better cam, valves, pistons, balanced crank, overhaul the same carbs also, keep it as its meant to be mate , just my input :)
idk man , but i would probably keep it oem ( eng and trans ) but fix it 100% . with maybe a light tune (75-100 ) more hp and an exhaust . then if you still feel it's missing that feeling you're looking for mod it more i guess . it's all about smiles per miles bud
A14 is perfect for this truck...As far as I know the A14 was used in a few Datsun's in the US in the 70's and early 80's...The Sunny Truck came out with the A14 over here from 1980. If you want to learn a few things check out Datsun1200.com, there's a lot of info there...I have a Sunny Truck myself. Looking forward to the build! 😁

A high-compression NA SR20 would be a great swap. you can even throw on some ITBs.

スティーブさんこんにちは。楽しい企画ですね！症状からしてラジエターの詰まりと、オイル下がりor上がりが起きていますね。後者は硬いオイルに変えると止まることもありますが、おそらくピストンやシリンダーの隙間から燃焼室にオイルが入って燃やされているんだろうと思います。私はA型サニトラを商売で１０年以上使用していますが、いろいろ試した結果カムはそのままでA14を1500CCボアアップ（クランクは要交換、加工）が一番下からパンチがあってトラックらしい乗り味になると思いました。６０Aの5速MT＋ソレックス４０＋タコアシですが今も毎日ノントラブルで走れてます。
エンジンルームもキレイにするんですね！

何年か前のノスタルジック2デイズでワタシのクラウンとそのサニトラを並べて展示したのを思い出します！
18才の時、B110サニーのセダンに乗っていましたが、A12は名機で、ストリートでは無敵です。
L型やロータリー 、トヨタのダブルカムとか置いていきますよ。昔のニッポンみたいな街乗りの話ですけどね。
ハイカム、フライホイール、ボアアップでフケ上がり重視とかいいですね～
水漏れはオイルが漏れる以上にエンジンにダメージを受けるからね😅ラジエーターやリザーバータンクのクーラントが減ってないか気をつけて👍
キャブもいいけど４スロインジェクションの方がいいのでは？エンジンはポート拡大とバルブ擦り合わせにバルブスプリング強化くらいでも早くなりますよ。

サニトラチューニング楽しみですねえ！エンジンの話とは違いますが古い車なのでガスやオイルのホース関係は一通り見た方がいいと思います。僕のサニトラはガソリンタンクと給油口の間のパーツが劣化していてガソリン満タンにしたら漏れた、なんてことがありました
サニトラのエンジンベイだと直6は大幅に改造(ファイアウォールカットなど)しないと厳しくなると思うので、直4かV6が良いと思う。ノスタルジックに改造するなら、Z18辺りをオススメします。
ボンネット開けたらエンジンしか見えないようなスムージング加工。
実にアメリカ的なカスタムを日本の商用旧車で。
あと、マフラーを荷台からビッグ・リグみたいに立ち上げるとかは？一応トラックなんでw

ソレックスにタコ足が最初から付いてるなら、オーバーホールしてジェッティングか。
これならハイカムも入ってるのかな？だったら、マフラーをワンオフして、カリフォルニアに合わせたジェッティングでいけそうな気がする～。
A 12は日産車なので、出来れば日本に送って調整してもらえば良いでしょう。
B110 はTSクラスのレースでは常勝車でそのチューニングパーツのTOMEI が有名ですセダンの終了後トラックはドラッグレースで成績が有ります10000rpmで175HP 有りました

まずはラジエーターファンを着ける事が必要と考えます。
日本の真夏の場合ですが真夏では常にH寄りに針は指しているので、サニトラのラジエーターはエンジンに対して容量がギリギリの様です。
エンジンオイルですが水分が混ざるとコーヒー牛乳の様な色になるので可能性は低いと考えます。
ガソリンの匂いとの事なので、キャブレターからのガソリンの混入の可能性が考えられ、キャブレターのオーバーフローからのガソリンの吹き出しが無いならば、キャブの油面の確認とフロート並びにニードルバルブの確認が必要と考えますが、燃料ポンプが電磁ポンプに換装されている様なので燃圧の確認も必要と考えます。
白煙ですが要因が数有り、映像では判断が難しいです。オーバーヒートした事とアクセルを開けた時だけの様に見えるので、まずはエンジンバルブとバルブガイドが怪しいと考えます。
ガスケット抜けですが簡単な確認としてラジエーターのエア抜きが出来ない、いつまでもエアが出て来る事が多いです。
またオーバーヒートにも度合いが有り、ラジエーターキャップからの吹き出しやホースの破裂もしくは冷却水不足の走行でも無い限り壊れにくい頑丈なエンジンですよ。もちろんオイルの管理は重要ですが。
自分の経験が少しでも役に立てば幸いです。

over heatしたあとなら1度開けてオーバーホールしてからキャブ見直して、古い車両なのでアーシング位がサニトラらしいんじゃないかと思います。

外装と合ってないのはカッコ悪いです。
いっそスティーブ仕様に塗装するかラッピングしても楽しいですね。

If it was my truck i would swap in a Toyota 2.7 4cyl tacoma motor and 5spd manual unless you want to keep it carborated
that would be killing the build. a rare 510 truck with a B.R.E. Datsun Racing livery and a tacoma engine doesn't sound right for some reason
