Its mind boggling. I'll be 60 in August. Mr Dean passed away 9 years before I was born.
I worked in a trauma center for 26 years. If everyone could see what happens to the human body in a horrific car crash Everyone would slow down, they wouldn't tail gate, always use the signals and always buckle your seat belt. Mainly its speed. We can be going 35 mph and die. But chances are you will survive. Double that speed the chances go way down.
Please.. everyone stay safe, buckle up and lower your speed. Your family wants you to come home tonight ❤
Much love from North Carolina 🌷 🌷
So true n Well said 🙏🏼

Absolutely! 💯
Your correct. You forgot to mention young women texting and checking there makeup while running 80+ miles an hour and steering the car with their knees and fixing there hair. As a truckdriver for the last 40 years I have seen this countless times since cell phones came to be.

I live 20 minutes from Fairmount where James was raised and went to High school.
Every year in Fairmount we celebrate James Dean Days where thousands of fans bring in classic cars and small fair so to speak. You can go to James museum and see the rarest artifacts from James including his motorcycle, yearbooks, pictures, you name it, it's there. James is buried a short distance from his home.
Wow 70 years already R.I.P. Jimmy 😢
Crazy how fast time flies.
His name is JAMES. "Jimmy" Dean was a pop singer celebrity, unrelated to James Dean.
Nice report, very respectful. Mr Turnupseed never spoke about this with anyone, not just the media, if remember right. I was raised in Tulare & knew the family, good folks. True that it must have weighed on him daily but despite that he became very successful passing the business, his namesake, to His family. Rest in peace James & Don.
I've been a Lamont at Large fan since 2018! You've come a long way my man! Awesome job! As usual.
I had no idea that the crash site was still this remote. I always thought that the impact was more of a broadside rather than a glancing blow. Lamont, thank you for shedding light on this tragedy.
Since you are back in California for a minute, maybe you could do something on Marilyn Monroe. The last house where she was living at is still in West LA
Lamont and his sister did a video on Marilyn
It’s not too terribly remote, just about 20 minutes or so east of Paso Robles. Turnupseed’s vehicle was broadsided by Dean’s, although Dean turned to the right a little, leading to the damage to his side of the vehicle, and more than likely saving his passenger’s life. While they say he was going the speed limit, I’m not very sure they were. There were very few police patrolling way out there at the time, and I’m sure he had opened the throttle back up. I’ve driven that stretch literally thousands of times (no exaggeration), in all types of weather and all times of the day & night. That left turn towards Fresno is no joke. Highway 46 E has a nickname that it’s earned: Blood Alley.
@April-Jay they did a good job discussing the details and new owners who want to demolish it.

@@GNW-wr5hk I agree. I’ve never seen him have fun like that! He was happy. Pretty cool to see
You are helping bring back memories for that generation. I know his story and about James Dean but his death was just a few years before I was born.
I have been by there sooo many times. I'm in Merced and my husband's family is on the coast. That road is all changed now. The actual crash site was more over into that field. Did you see the memorial at the Jack Ranch Cafe? Its just down the street. That's a whole video in itself!
It was just an accident. No one was to blame but the Porsche itself. It was a low cut racer without a proper windscreen and it was a sunny day. Put those two together and the chances of a collision is high. Im glad they left Turnupseed alone as he was 100% not to blame for this tragedy. Same with James. Thankfully they brought out a law banning race cars from public roads. That's certainly saved lives since this awful event.
Dean's biggest mistake was driving the Pooch instead of towing it behind the Country Squire on the trailer, as was recommended by the dealer where he bought it six days earlier.
@@lancasterritzyescargotdine2602 Yeah big mistake. It's such a pity he was dead at 24 when he had so much left to offer. Still he never grew old which is my biggest fear! He was an old soul in a young body.
@@rushshukla4636 If it's any comfort, remember you're only as old as you feel. Try it! It's kept me here as I have outlived all my close friends, family and schoolmates.
Back in the fifties, the sports cars that raced were essentially stock, and few were trailered to the track, most were driven, or flat towed. I believe that I've read that he wanted to drive it to the track that day, to break in the new engine, before racing it.
@@ramblerdave1339 That is true. It was his impulsive youth that overtook sounder judgment.
From Fairmont, Indiana and I have been to the James Dean Festival and his grave in Fairmont, Indiana, which they took his headstone away because everyone kept chiseling pieces of his headstone until it was really badly damaged. They were trying to replace it so they decided not to put another headstone up!
When did the headstone get taken away? I know it was stolen in the 80s and reinstalled? It was still there and decorated for the last festival in September of 2023.
There's another one there.
I'll have to see how far away i am. I'm about 3 mins away from Ray combs. I voted at his middle school
I haven't been back since 1989, so I'm not sure about that because it was in the news. But I'm glad they put another headstone in place.

That stretch of road is tricky. If you're not used to it, it can be hazardous.
I really enjoyed this segment on James Dean, awesome Lamont!
I implore anyone that wants to know the actual account of the last 12 hours of Dean’s life to read “James Dean: On the Road to Salinas” by Lee Raskin. He’s a Porsche and James Dean historian for many decades and has written a number of books on both subjects. He’s often asked to consult with authors and video producers regarding James Dean's motorsports activities. The book I referenced above has the detailed account of his last day, accident and the inquest by the police that followed.
There are a few good books on the subject.
Hey Lamont, thanks for showing all the different kind of videos its pretty interesting stuff 😊

I'm from this area and very familiar with this incident. You did a very good job with your description...
The site looks a lot different from 47 yrs ago, I was hitchhiking from Camp Roberts to my folks house in Ontario, we got a 4 day pass for the long 4th of July weekend. It was a T intersection with lots of bushes. I got dropped off at the intersection and was thumbing it for a ride. There was very little traffic and I sat there for a couple hours, I had to pee and went off the shoulder into the bushes, there was a fence post and on it was a small brass plaque, "James Dean died in a car crash here on....."
Great work Lamont. Coupled with the visuals in 4K, you give this story clarity that I hadn't experienced before from reading online.
After viewing this it's easy to believe young Turnipseed. It was nearing dusk with Dean in a car the same color as the road. As you said, It's also unfair to assume he was speeding as he may have slowed down to avoid a second ticket for the day. It was just a terrible accident where we lost a fine person and great talent.
I have all the Dean movies on Blu-ray. Giant, the one he just wrapped up filming is my favorite. He upstaged both Rock and Liz.
I’ve driven by there a 100 times and never saw the stuff on the fence! That’s cool
Any way you tell it the story is a terrible disaster! Seems like stars meet their demise from all the risks they seem to take! Great story Lamont! Great documentation for James dean😢
AWESOME VIDEO LAMONT.
There is a photo here Of James Dean out of the car and he had just got gas. It is said to be the last photo of Dean and his Porsche and that may be true, but the photos could not have been taken on the day of the crash/accident. The words "LITTLE BASTARD" is NOT there on the HOOD.
If you look at enough photos after the crash, we can find/see the Porsche being hauled from the crash area on the back of a tow truck. In one photo you can see the front of the car because it is sitting sideways on the tow truck with the back of car to our right with the front to our left. Between the front edge of the hood and the nameplate Porsche We can see the words "LITTLE BASTARD" in 4 inch high red or black letters on the "HOOD". BTW, the car pulling the trailer is a 1955 Ford Station Wagon with wood grain paneling that could never be confused with a Jeep. I am not saying Lamont ever said the photo at the gas station were taken on the same day of the accident, but others have.
Thank u for the video like always Lamont.

I'm a certified Accident Reconstructionist, and while everything now is obviously computer based, but the physics and mathematics involved have not changed. If CHP says Dean was at or around the speed limit, I'd believe it.
I'm an engineer IRL, not civil but I DO understand some things about roads. The layout and physical design of the area has been changed. There was a STRONG chance the sun, low on the horizon combined with the angle of the roads, blinded the other driver. It was all just a sad accident.
You are a troll. Yes its that obvious
Speed kills.
If you get back out there there is a memorial at a tree next to the memorial in that town. I saw it 30 years ago.
A memorial nearby was established by a Japanese businessman decades ago.

Thanks for sharing. Super sad. James was a terrific actor.
Too bad Lamont didn't stop by Blackwell's Corner. It is/was about 25 miles east of the crash site. It was Dean's last stop before the wreck. It was a gas station. I think he bought a coke or something there. There used to be a large wood or tin metal cutout of Dean in front of the place. Inside was Dean memorabilia. I don't know if it is still there, Lamont would have noticed and probably would have gone in, but he must have been coming from the west instead of the east. If he had come from east near I-5 and Lost Hills he couldn't have missed it.
A few years back we stopped by that spot and I found a hub cap from his porch
Thank you really cool video. Hi from Western Australia
My father’s doctor purchased the James Dean wreck and I remember seeing a picture of it hanging in his office, you could clearly see the speedometer in the photo indicating the speed well over a hundred miles an hour. The wreck was purchased for the engine alone.
George Barris purchased the car and sold the Engine and chassis to a physician in NY who used it to race and died in a wreck racing it a year after Dean died.
Great content. I’ve passed that exact location many times. It’s changed quite a bit since I lived in Orcutt, Ca. in the late 80’s early 90’s. The intersection was much different and the sun was low on the horizon and played a part in the accident. My opinion.
Rest in peace James Dean fly free 💐💐 he my favourite actor I have collected of him.

Funny you mention the color of the car. I've known some friends of my family who owned a body shop and they said silver cars were the main color of cars that they would fix at their shop. For some reason that color just seems to blend in with the area around it.

I grew up in Fresno and traveled this streatch many times. I am a huge fan of Jimmy and I also love Porsches like he did. I talked to the officer that was the first on the scene, Ernest Tripke when I was a kid. In those days you could pick up a phone book and find a person's tel #. Jimmy was a great driver, he had zero chance as the other driver turned left in front of Jimmy's 550. There are 2 roads that head towards the Fresno Area. It is my belief that the other driver saw the first road last min thinking he missed the turn off, there were 2 sets of skid marks at the scene with a distance between them. Then the other driver turned into Jimmy's path to head towards the 41 turn off. Speed had nothing to do with the collision, the other driver went into Jim's lane and hit him head on. Witnesses saw Jim's car spin upon impact throwing Rolf from the car, some say this is how he survived. Jim was breathing at the seen and was taken to the hospital in Paso. He had a broken neck. I have studied this a lot over the years, talked to the CHP that got to the scene and talked to Trooper "Oddie" Hunter who had given Jimmy the speeding ticket. Jim got the blame for the accident due to public perception of him being a "speed demon". The other kid that hit Jim was a "local" kid. Jimmy was in an expensive German car, with a German passenger. WWII was fresh in everyones mind, so there was a lot of bias involved. RIP Lil' Bastard". You "Live fast, die young, and leave a good corpse."
It's my understanding from previous accounts that the other driver didn't see Dean's car and made a left turn into Dean's path. Most unfortunate.
How in the world has this area remained undeveloped in 70 years? Still looks like the 1800s, no urban sprawl, no ugly housing developments. Where I live in Tennessee, there's no land left like this. All the farmland has been paved over.
Wow know those places I used to live in kettlemancity California rip🙏🙏🙏🙏
Great video, I visited there a few years ago.
Where is Donald Turnupseed buried?
Thank you Lamont ☮️☯️
The memorial site where the Jack Ranch cafe is ,at the time was the garage/tow yard that Deans and Turnupseeds cars were towed too, the owner also owned and drove the ambulance that transported Dean to the hospital, and was also involved in a fender bender while in route to the hospital.
5:10 If it wasn't for that cop, James would have never met the driver that killed him. Let that sink in.
If Dean wasn't speeding the cop never would have ticketed him.
We all have a time
If he hadn't stopped for gas. If he hadn't stopped for lunch....@@salvation4all313
That intersection has changed quite a bit since then.
The actual crash site isn’t where the flowers, etc are.
The whole layout of the highway intersection was redone following this accident. The current configuration is nothing like it was in 1955 !!!
I can't believe it has been 70 years ago.
Wow that long
The ambulance was also in an accident on the way in to Paso Robles. They think that might have been enough to finish off Dean.
Seems you kind of forgot to mention that the road has been reconfigured extensively since 1955
U are a wonderful person💯 Thank you for your hard work👍
68 and 1/2 years ago that James Dean passing. My mom was only 6 and 1/2 and my dad was 13 when dean died.

I live in Lemoore California I travel often in the summertime going to Shell Beach. San Luis Obispo Pizmo, five cities Morro Bay. Cayucos is my favorite one. I did a lot of work I was a painter at that time there at the coast.
James Dean made only three movies during his entire short career. Dean was dead for some time before his last film, Giant, was even released in theaters. Audiences literally watched a ghost portray a Texas cowboy who rose to fame and fortune drilling for oil. ;)
He was alive to see the release of East of Eden only. He had already been killed when Rebel Without a Cause was released and, of course, Giant. That’s what I’ve read, anyway.
Had James Dean had his headlights on, perhaps Turnupseed would have seen him.
True.
Never rely on other drivers for your safety.
Ever heard of Uber ? Lyft ??
I still remember the "Be a defensive driver" campaign in the 60s/70s it was everywhere even on envelopes from the gov. Left a big impression on my little kid brain.
So you just put your life in someone else's hands using uber & lyft. I'd rather take a professional driver like a taxi over those.
Good luck on getting ripped off 20 bucks around the store when easily Uber charges you 5 bucks.
Not where I live, Uber & lyft are the same as a taxi. Besides they've just about decimated the taxi cab industry, I'll support a taxi before anything else.

I was told that the trajectory of the head-on collision, propelled the engine forward. My husband and I knew an older woman who had been working that night at the hospital (she was an RN) and said that Dean had some burns on him. The burns were not fatal. I did some research, and could find no mention of it. And the engine was not damaged. In fact it was sold later to someone who had it installed into his Lotus. Your best yet. At 7:41 there is a patch of grass forming a triangle. The original transition to US 41 from 466 would have bisected that area, so that's where the impact was. Dean's Porsche actually ended up at the edge of the grass in the foreground at 8:23 where the red Camaro passes. This is because in 1959 the intersection was realigned for safety and the road the Camaro passes on did not exist in 1955, but the barbed wire fence did. Rolf was asleep until impact. He did not hear Dean say anything before impact.
Best comment I have read so far.
Yes, a good explanation of the crash and how the roads were at that time. "Dearly Departed Tours w Scott" YT channel.
If no one believes this, they can go to Historic Aerials and look at a 1956 aerial of this location.
This makes more sense. If the crash had taken place at the current intersection Deans car would have been traveling well over 100mph to end up along the fence line.

along came a spyder, picked up a rider
took him down the road to eternity
James Dean, James Dean, you bought it sight unseen
James Dean, James Dean, you bought it sight unseen
You are too fast to live, too young to die, bye-bye you were too fast to live, too young to die, bye-bye
Bye bye too fast to live, too Young to die,
Bye-bye too fast to live, too young to die,
Bye-bye too fast to live, too Young to die,
Bye-bye too fast to live, too Young to die,
Too fast to live too Young to die
Oo oo oo oo too fast to live too young to die Bye-bye too fast to live too young to die
Oh, James Dean too fast to live too Young to die!
The song is not really that long, but it really does have meaning! Here's some facts about the song!
Jackson Browne and JD Souther, who were both friends of the band, helped Don Henley and Glenn Frey write the song.
perfect song
One important fact, the ambulance carrying James Dean was in another accident on the way to the hospital further delaying his arrival.
He was already dead, look at that crash and what was left of his toy car.
wow
@@buzz5969I bet you’re fun at parties 🙄
@@MichaelaH2059🤷♀️that's an important fact. It was his time to go. #INQUIRINGMINDS
Seriously ??? 😮
For anyone wondering, the road has changed a lot since that day. I'm not even sure where all that stuff was along the fence was the final resting spot of the crashed car, I think the original fence line was pushed back for new road expansion. In fact, coming down the hill you can look off to the left and can see parts of the original two lane road. Have driven thru here many times from Bakersfield to visit family near Morro Bay, beautiful area.
It really is beautiful. I used to live in Long Beach but I've been in that area plenty of times
TY for the great video!Peace Out!
I remember seeing another TH-cam video that tried to ID the exact spot and pointing out that the existing spot is not accurate. I also read that the current spot is strictly for having a safe place to lay flowers, etc. About where the exact spot is, is now part of the road and too dangerous for people to standing near it.
@@delstanley1349 Yeah I think I saw the same video. But hey, it's close enough.
I was wondering about that because if so those cars both had to be going faster then 55 to travel that far, demolished.
I've driven this road many many times, having lived in Paso many years and then heading over to I-5 to go north. I'd always heard that James had just left the roadside restaurant Jack Ranch Cafe, and had headed back out on the road. I have seen several near accidents with people speeding along that route, it's a wonder more haven't been killed, the sun can temporarily blind people certain times of the day.. RIP James
I always respect the dead.Lost mom 11 years ago from cancer.😢 The cemetery is beautiful but a harsh reminder of life lessons.❤
There's a gas station along that road that has a James Dean museum....it was the last place he stopped for gas before the crash....great video Lamont....❤
I remembered traveling through that area in the 1980s and we stopped at a diner that had a copy of his speeding ticket. We also visited a memorial nearby of a large silver infinity symbol that was erected around a tree with two plaques about James Dean. Does anybody know if that's still around? I can't remember where this memorial was located, unfortunately.
@@canislupus7463 It was still there in 2006 ...
I love @LamontatLarge , don't you!
@@canislupus7463 I believe you're referring to the small hamlet of Cholame (pronounced "sha-LOM").
As a motorcycle rider, I often encounter accident victims, where they weren't seen. I don't lecture, but my philosophy is that anything that can go wrong will go wrong. I always expect the worst, and take action to avoid it. Thinking that the other guy sees you and will stop is a death sentence.
