  • In the third episode of our series on sustainable travel, made in collaboration with @DW हिन्दी (DW Hindi), our colleague Swati Mishra takes you to Germany’s most popular travel destination to discuss the effects of Overtourism - on Bavaria. Places such as Munich and Lake Tegernsee in particular are feeling the impact of mass tourism. What are the consequences of overtourism for locals and nature? And how can sustainable travel be achieved in Germany's southerly state? Swati explores one solution in the village of Kreuth.

I live in very beautiful British Columbia. I should say that Covid restrictions made this problem much worse. All locals who normally didn’t do much camping or hiking started doing it out of inability to do their normal travelling. For us, who does it all the time it caused a lot of problems with getting to our favourite places. In addition, all these new people leave a lot of litter and burn fires in the places where is not allowed. It looks like all park rangers are overwhelmed with all of this. The most affected are easily accessible places. I hope that all these activities are temporary. This year it is actually much better than the last

I used to visit countries in Europe every years until the Chinese tourists buses arrived ....it is not enjoyable anymore and it is really sad and destructing . The cities need to be less greedy and realize there is a real cost in water and pollution will cost more than the money they are making .

    • @DWTravel

@Real Salica Would you have a suggestion on how to curb overtourism?

@@DWTravel First the cities in question need to create other businesses , they need to stop relying on tourism . With the internet , if they are creative enough , or if local makers relied on tourism to sell their creations , they don't have to anymore . Germany has to invest in their International presence on the internet for businesses , they only have huge business so far . But all the the small shops should be selling and shipping internationally . They need good internet . I've seen a lot of businesses from Eastern Europpean countries making good business and Portugal as well , they adapted because of the Coronavirus and the lack of tourists . And the cities should definitivelly limits their vistors , by any means . Your patrimoine is suffering .

€20,00 charge for parking anywhere on out of town number plates, after your visit if you have spent over €100,00 you get your parking money back.
But with the new €49,00 travel tickets most things should change with traffic, the €9,00 card was a Godsend for GAP.

Meh, I have seen this topic pop up a lot recently. NZ, Thailand, Bali in particular. Is this some sort of new orchestrated effort or what? Almost looks like yet another Davos conspiracy theory.
Whatever it is, we all know how this ends, right? Move up the value chain. So basically steering via cost. Co2 emission charges, tourist tax, licences/visitor limits etc. All yours if you have the money.
Seems to me the rich want to travel places without seeing any out of place peasants or congestion, once more. Back to the office, work awaits, they need more money to pay for this.
Also, we haven't seen anything yet. There's billions more people that have aspirations and dreams. And they all want to travel. And they probably will if they up their incomes just a little more.
    Welcome to the future.

The excuse for overtourism in Bavaria is also that because they are poor and without Tourism they wouldn't eat because they are nobody?

@@DWTravel I guess there's always room for improvement for everyone and the presenter definitely has. The presentation at times does come across as pretentious. Not to mention, this is an official youtube channel of a national news agency viewed by many, not just any vlog from a random youtuber.
