    The best part of the chess trick was when he revealed how he did it, they essentially just played each other. Simple but brilliant !

    • @mizofan
      @mizofan 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      but what about Derren saying he was shit at chess but beat the remaining (admittedly not so great) player, and the numbers of pieces at the end?

    • @redpred3502
      @redpred3502 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not really. It's a concept which has been known for ages and ages. It's literally the reason why when playing simultaneous games each side only plays one colour. As in, in a proper simultaneous game Derren would only be playing as one colour for every board.
      I struggle to believe none of these professional players realised what was happening, especially when they're playing alternating colours with the other boards obscured from vision.

    So with the chess thing he's using the moves from some of the chess players against the others, right? That's why he can't win all the games.

    • @thromboid
      @thromboid 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Exactly - still an impressive feat of memory, and he still has to win one of the games for real. See the full clip here: th-cam.com/video/rIAXIubSTkc/w-d-xo.html

    I press play on the clip, I hear derren say to the old woman "a week from now were going to enter you.." I immediately pause the video, go to the store during rush hour traffic to buy some personal lube. I come back and press play "... into a poker game". Literally my whole night ruined. EDIT: used my mind powers to imagine, still had fun.

  • @Eddiek454

    I love Derrens shows and have watched them for years. One thing that sort of ruined the experience was when I went to see a live show. Part of the act was to use words shouted out from members of the audience. It went well and everyone was amazed. However, he did more than one show that week, and a friend of mine had been to it. We talked about it and it turns out that the words shouted "at random" by the audience were the same words.
    For me the shows have always been about trying to figure out how he does what he does. Sometimes I do, most of the time I dont. Its annoying to think that he says he never uses stooges, and yet I have first hand experience that he does.

      I used to work at a theater that he performed at several times. The box office confirmed there were over one hundred shills/stooges in the audience ! (1850 capacity venue). He also uses his own back stage crew and security.

      this is the whole point of conjuring. "I'm not lying" , "no trick photography was used" , "I've never met this person before" .
      magicians are masters of deception, if one believes anything they say or do during a trick, one is a gullible fool - i.e. a target.

    • @Eddiek454
      @Eddiek454 7 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      I agree that conjuring is about deception - slight of hand, distraction etc... but it should not be about outright lying where you tell people that stooges arent used when they are.

    Many many years ago when i was just 13 i started to learn to play CHESS...And I Often played with Friends and occasionally with my Grandfather who used to play for the County...And I also played at school as at Lunchtimes we used to have a Chess room you could go and Watch or Play...One time I played 12 other players all at the same time and to my amazement I actually beat the whole Lot...I Always played at least 7/10 Moves in front of Any Opponent ...After leaving school my grand father died and I did Not play again...Memories are made of these things...

    British guy and big fan. Assuming this will reach you Derren I propose an idea: What would happen to someone who had no fear? How would their life change? I've seen the Trick Or Treat shows (actually I've seen all your shows, great stuff, the tying a tie around someones neck without them noticing trick you did is my personal favourite). What if you conditioned/hypnotised someone to have no fear (aside from obvious stuff like not walking off a cliff)? I would volunteer for that and sign any necessary legal waivers required for appearance in a TV Show.

    Okay, I’m saying what I think about the last reading...I stand corrected
    He said she had something in her throat - we at some point in our lives have something in our throat
    He said she has a heart problem - that’s general for the elderly because of the lifestyle of the majority of people that doesn’t fall around workouts
    He said that she once or presently have problems sleeping -- yes that's for the elderly and more for them because they worked in sectors that could be thought disturbing and she's the intelligent type, highly intelligent people generally sleep late and have an active imagination which would even more increase her chances of trouble sleeping
    He said she eats healthy or something of sort nature - you’ll expect it of people that worked in the ufo who knows better than to live their lives carelessly....I can even make more guesses for the lady and her husband.

    he doesn't claim being psychic.....just being able to READ people and dirrect them
    it's a hell of a sharletton skill and pretty impressive to watch
    the counting cards strategy is pretty common but well played none the less, however the instilling confussion on the cabby was brilliant to watch and great fun to see the man who makes his living knowing were he's going and were he is being blind sided
    he's got his act down pat for unsuspecting people
    I would like to know his succes rate against a group of for warned people though....a single forwarned person should be able to defeat him, but a group should have weakness ( like the chess match )

    It's disheartening to me read the comments and hear that DB may use stooges in his shows. However, even if he does, I still consider him one of the world's greatest magicians/mentalists ever. I haven't seen him live and considering travel to the uk challenges, likely never will, but have been following and "aware of" Derren since 2009, for the past 8 years. He's still impressive imho.

    Darren Brown puts together shit I must admit as a magician I have NO CLUE about (the method). I own his book Tricks of the Mind and for those who have not read it, I highly recommend doing so. Well worth the read. The most unusual style of magic who’s come along in a while.
    I’d be very curious to see if he could Fool Penn & Teller...now that’s a matchup I think we al need to see. If he could do any of this to them, I’d change my opinion on some elements of this style of magic for good. I wish he’d come to the States again. I’d go to a live show in a second.

    The Taxi Driver
    *Have you even forgotten how to spell a really simple word... e.g (where, their, we..) - Its whats happening here but on a larger scale. Your overwhelmed with thoughts, you forget the most obvious and simple things. Then when you try to actually think of the word for a split moment(couple of seconds or less) you still cant figure how to spell the word but then you do!
    The Taxi Driver Break Down! (Below):
    - You can tell from the guys look/speech he may a little simple or suggestive (not to be rude here, but it's very important in Darren picking that target making that observation) (that would not have been the first Taxi he stopped).
    - Taken away by a film crew from channel 4 one of the UK's most popular non satellite channels making him on edge & distracting his mind from whats actually happening. This reaction "of course" suggests excitement" he maybe thinking "I am going to be on the TV" "Cant wait to tell the lads down the pub about this..."
    *Darren enters the cab & asks to be taken to the "London Eye" the cab driver response "London Eye Sure!..." playing the role of the happy taxi driver for the cameras. He then repeats "London Eye, this time not so confidently" (its at this point more thoughts are going though his mind)
    *Darren once in the cab is overly happy & friendly, in the UK this is generally seen as suspicious (sad but true)
    *Also note he has to pay attention to the busy London traffic in the middle of the day while having to try answer/listen to Darren
    - Darren then starts conversion with the cab driver which at this point will be thinking the following.... "What are they actually filming for", "Am I aloud to even do this", "Do they know about the time I did not clock a fair" "When I charged a tourist to much" this then leads to thoughts of "OMG am I going to lose my job", "I wont be able to pay my bills" and "I wont be able to support my family". At this point the feeling of "Im going to be on TV" quickly changes to him re-calling moments of guilt or times of lack of honestly. This mixture of feelings or thoughts happens very quickly causing a state of confusion..
    - Darren then goes onto to make references using obvious key words such as "Wheel" "Lost The Wheel" this actually does not impact the cap drivers thoughts at all (some viewers may think oh he says "Wheel" and "Lost" that why it worked, its more complex then this) it simply adds to the confusion racing though the guys head. At this moment the cab driver is not really listening to the full story but picks up on some words "Wheel", "Lost" "Not A Clue" & "Round n Round" he subconscious will be thinking about those words already.
    *At this point the cab driver will be thinking "I wish you would be quiet, I don't remember where you wanted to go"
    - Darren then suddenly bangs on the partition between him and the taxi driver changing the story suddenly with the key word "Bullet Proof" this snaps the cab drivers thoughts to think "Whats going on here" "Bullet Proof...!" "Are they a legit film crew" "Whats happening" "No its fine Im ok". Darren then asks "is this glass by the way or a perspex" you can here the nervousness in the cab drivers voice here "its a its a..."
    - At this point the driver is total confused & overwhelmed with his own thoughts he has totally forgotten. Darren faking to be confused amplifies this also.

    • @redpred3502

    So for people that believe that he really can do what he claims to do how do you think he made that taxi driver forget where a massive London landmark is with no hypnosis(which doesn’t exist) and I know he said lost the wheel but there is ABSOLUTELY no way possible that would make you forget it, it’s clearly stooge work - but people that do believe it how what logical explanation can you offer me for it

    The poker bit was mildly impressive, Anne made marginal calls and the statistics held up. the call with a flush draw was particularly dodgy, she could have easily busted out right there, most of the time she's flipping. anyway still entertaining.

Still, I enjoyed pretending... Maybe I'll try it, here in Sleepytown, where I live. Maybe I'll get a reputation for being somewhat "eccentric."
