  • This match was the 1st week and 1st game of the whole WGP held in late August 1996. All teams had finished their Olympic journey and Cuba was the champion while China was the 1st runner-up.
    Post-Match Commentary :
Cuban squad without Luis and Carvajal, the best spiker and blocker in the early 90s, for rest and retirement. As planned, #5 Gato (24yo, 1.78m) finally be the lineup who played as the 3rd spiker in the team for the past 2 years.
China used #5 Wu Yongmei (21yo, 1.85m) middle replaced #6 Wang Yi (23yo, 1.89m) in lineup and rest of the players were the same as Olympic. For the 1st set, Cuba led China 13-8 but things went so differently in the latter of the set. Cuba team was never play seriously in WGP or warm up matches !
With the situation of versatile player #11 Sun Yue (23yo, 1.86m) who attack success rate greater than 50% and ‘careless' Cubans, it's a straight 3:0 victory by China. #1 Ruiz (18yo, 1.76m) was up on court replaced #5 Gato (24yo, 1.78m) and this made her begin the lineup player soon in the team. And this is the last game China won Cuba during 96-00 cycle in WGP.

The thing with Cuba and the GP is that the first time they won the Super Four (I think that's what it was called first), the Cuban government only gave each player and coach around 250 USD and kept the rest. The second time, they also won. Eugenio George decided to split the prize money among the players, coaches, and also gave some to the rest of the staff. When they got back to Cuba, Fidel demanded that the money was given to the government (that is, him). Each player and coach was given again like 250 USD only. Eugenio George was sanctioned by the Cuban government and was not allowed to train the players anymore. Only after they saw that the Cuban team was not performing as it used to in some competitions that they were invited to, the Cuban government decided to allow Eugenio George to train the team again. Eugenio decided not to take the GP very seriously anymore. That's why he almost never used the 6-2 formation during the GP competition. I was very young with this happened. I learned this from my father when I was back in Cuba. I had been playing and following volleyball since age 9, but I did not know anything about Cuban politics and what the government was doing with the money that the players won in the GP. For the Olympic Games, world championships, and world cups, it was different because the gold medal was dedicated to our people, not the government. They knew that they couldn't let us down. In an interview, Marlene Costa said that they didn't give it all during the GP competitions, but the OG, WCH, and WC were something different, and they would not let the Brazilians take the gold medal away from them. Also, Magaly did not retire. She simply left Cuba and went to live in Europe. The Cuban government would not let her play with the Cuban team anymore.

Thanks for your information. I heard Cuban player was very poor. During 93/94 when they played in HK, Brazilian player share their canned food to Cuban player. Costa or whoever else would like to sell their jersey for money. Cuba like some other countries that government took the money way back, I m not surprise on this. Fivb made a rule that 40 or 60% of prize money should go to the players in 94 or 95. But didn’t know whether it’s successfully implement in some counties.
