He talks about it in detail on his comedy special hair plugs and heartache. It’s the day you get home from surgery someone has to go with you because you’re, like this guy, a mess from the anesthesia
This episode of True Life is burned into my brain for eternity. The amount of times my friends and I said "Real men wear body glitter" in highschool is immeasurable. I still say it to myself whenever I see any kind of glitter in a beauty/body product. 😅
@ some of those gym bros act like him and honestly sometimes even more gay and yet they consider themselves completely unwaveringly straight. so i really wasn’t sure 😬
The calf implants episode has lived rent free in my head for all this time. I was starting to believe it was a fever dream lolol. Glad i wasn't the only one.😅But out of all the crazy stories on true life, why did the calf one stick w all of us like it did? wtf
I remember a True Life episode with this closeted gay guy from the Midwest and it was about him coming out. It was so funny at the end when he told his female friend (who I think he thought had a crush on him or something? lol) but it was so obvious she knew he was gay the whole time. So, it all turned out to be super wholesome since you could tell how relived he was that his friends knew, and where just waiting for him to be comfortable with saying it. Its a random one, but its always lived rent free in my mind.
My husband mentioned this episode yesterday. I told him you (comedian that I love) were watching this and said, "Did he mention he was exercising wrong?" 😂😂
Omg!! MTV true life!! 92’ here I remember watching this after homework. The janco jean days! Thank you Matteo for bringing back these recaps from way back when😊
That seemed like such an insane epilogue that was so quickly brushed over, it makes me wonder if there's not gonna be some sort of follow-up. Like, it even looks like there was something cut because they decided "we can get another episode out of this."
🙋🏻♀️ Forever burned in my brain as well - especially the hotel scene attempting to get the pizza. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve looked at gym bros that have a huge upper body and twiggy legs and thought of this damn episode 😂😂
For real! I thought the same thing! Around that time, MTV used the popular music at that time. Which means, if they are playing Wish You Were Here, that means this is from like 2001.
Ok thank you! I feel like no one talks ain’t how iconic true life was! I used to watch it all the time!!! They had such good and compelling episodes, of course they have the silly ones like this one, but the show was so good!
This specific episode of true life is my Roman Empire. I’ve thought of this man quarterly for the last two decades. Also, dying at the Incubus instrumentals in the background 😂
Oh I remember this. I wanted to get a plastic surgery or a nose job at the time until I watched this series and saw how it’s done. Freaked me out so much, I didn’t want to do it anymore. The blood, people.
THISSSS as a young girl in the early 00’s I thought I also “needed” future plastic surgery. This and nip-tuck? Surgery is VIOLENT. Absolutely horrified me out of the idea completely
9:05 he was never going to achieve the calves he wanted purely due to his genetic makeup and body composition. Nothing wrong with a surgery like this to quell an insecurity that couldn’t be changed otherwise. He’s unabashedly proud of his hard work and unabashedly honest about getting the calf implants!
Matteo have you thought about covering MADE? A girl I sort of knew in high school was on it (sister of a girl I played D&D with) and I was secretly soooooooo jealous that she not only got to be on MTV but she also got a makeover from a real pageant queen. I wanted to go on that show so badly and was too much of a geek to admit it.
Nothing makes me laugh more than Matteo reacting to early 2000s TV. There was another show on MTV called world's strictest parents. You would have a field day with this show 😂😂
His calves are perfectly fine but he is overtraining them working them every day at the gym. The muscles need time to repair and build new tissue. Working them out everyday is just tearing the muscle down and it has the opposite effect of hypertrophy.
That was painful to watch but you helped me through this Mateo! Only scratched the surface on a deep topic. Was not at all surprised to hear what that guy "achieved" later in life 😂
Maybe it’s just me but if my plastic surgeon can’t spring for a marker that actually makes ink marks when I’m on a tv show, I’m not impressed him. Or somebody. Production maybe?
I remember watching that episode. I was in my late 20's and my eyes rolled right out of my head. I do remember at the end "Luke and his calves are still single". Hilarious. 😅😅
I was just talking about True Life with my lil bro last night. He said they came to his HS in the early 00’s but can’t remember which episode it was. I remember the True Life “I’m on ecstasy” episode and showing it to my friends, who were rolling every weekend at the time and it made them stop!
Matteo, I'm watching The First Wives Club for the first time in *years*, and I can't help but think of you! I hope you come again to Madrid soon; I'd love to see your live show!
I got laser skin resurfacing when I was 24 to get rid of cystic acne marks. It felt like my skin was literally burned off ky face for 4+ months. But my skin to this day is clear AF. Also, if I remember right this guy did p*rn to pay for this.
I hate to be that person and I feel bad for laughing but that episode with the blonde girl with Tourette's syndrome was iconic. Her just randomly shouting "I HAVE TOURETTES!!!! GOD!!!" always catches me off guard and it's hilarious
I love that we're kind of the same age, we're separated by not only an entire ocean, we come from two vastly different cultures, but I remember seeing that episode. It has lived rent-free in my head.
I love Matteo, he’s the best. Such a sweetheart and so funny. I’ve never met him. I felt the need to say that after I just spoke about him like I’m a proud aunt or some shit. Yay Matteo. 🎉
Realistically, maybe his workouts were missing something? The guys from Twinsauce have huge calves, but aside from working out, they dance too, so maybe he needed to do more stuff. Ironically, one of the Twinsauce guys is named Luke. lol
Matteo: after watching this, I had to look up this dude and his "film catalogue". I found one under "Tony Cage". It was a solo "performance", so in it he was not TECHNICALLY gay for pay. He looked good, about the same as he did in the episode. Makes you wonder how close to the episode he started his "career". His calves looked flawless!
3 words: puka shell necklace. 😂 I distinctly recall this episode from when I was 13. The vanity was concerning, even back then. I wonder what those implants look like now.
I remember watching this on MTV. Watching you watch this got me thinking that I may have watched this exact episode the exact same time as Mateo when this first aired.
The foreshadowing to him becoming a gay porn star was not subtle.
I looked it up and it's actually real?
That explains a lot.
@FasterJodie how'd you find him lol looking for scientific reasons 😂
@@Jacob42086🤣🤣
@@Jacob42086Read somewhere that he was Tony Cage. Just googled him and it is!
@@Jacob42086search for Tony Cage gay porn
the fact that nick helped you after your surgery warmed my heart!
Yea but now I’m curious how much help Nick actually gave , other than judge and complain 😂😂
He talks about it in detail on his comedy special hair plugs and heartache. It’s the day you get home from surgery someone has to go with you because you’re, like this guy, a mess from the anesthesia
@@MrMdiaz84exactly. Nick “I have to do that for you too?” Lol
I was about to comment this! It warms my heart!
I don't know what you guys are talking about! When I heard that,
"My heart ached." 😳
💚
This episode of True Life is burned into my brain for eternity. The amount of times my friends and I said "Real men wear body glitter" in highschool is immeasurable. I still say it to myself whenever I see any kind of glitter in a beauty/body product. 😅
🤣🤣🤣
I still remember the end of this episode saying “Luke and his calves are still single” 😂
Lol MTV shady as fuck
😱 they didn’t!
I see Matteo video.
I like Matteo video.
I watch Matteo video.
Rinse and repeat.
Right there with you.
@nullhare that's me, also 😅
Matteo knew he had a secret all along lol
I don't think it was just Matteo 😅
@ some of those gym bros act like him and honestly sometimes even more gay and yet they consider themselves completely unwaveringly straight. so i really wasn’t sure 😬
Somehow G4P seems like the perfection end to his whole character arc here.
Definitely!
"Anyway, stop hurting my feelings" took me out 🤣🤣🤣
The calf implants episode has lived rent free in my head for all this time. I was starting to believe it was a fever dream lolol. Glad i wasn't the only one.😅But out of all the crazy stories on true life, why did the calf one stick w all of us like it did? wtf

This reminded me that “I want a Famous Face” existed. That show was insane. MTV fever dream.
Loving the series of “wtf was on MTV”
When my husband was a teen he worked with one of the twins that was on the show😂
My husband mentioned this episode yesterday. I told him you (comedian that I love) were watching this and said, "Did he mention he was exercising wrong?" 😂😂
Exactly only working one part of the calves, no working the whole muscle group.
ok but now we need the Tyra G4P reaction to complete the lore
Sexuality is a spectrum, his is body glitter🤣
Immediately left to discover more Luke/"Tony Cage" information...for further research.
I remember watching this live on mtv. Also, that Surgeon Bruce Nadler killed his wife and then committed suicide in 2008, crazy!
I just read it up he did ! How awful
Yes, i randomly googled him, and found out
OMG!
Whaat tf
wtf!
I vividly remember this episode of True Life. I also remember Luke becoming Tony Cage in his adult movie career. 😅
you beat me to it i was about to say calf guy did gay porn lol
I knew I recognized him from somewhere.
❗
👀
a lateral move at mtv during those days ))
Omg!! MTV true life!! 92’ here I remember watching this after homework. The janco jean days! Thank you Matteo for bringing back these recaps from way back when😊
JNCOs were so awesome! My brother had a pair that were 64" at the bottom! It looked like he was wearing a denim ballgown 😂
Hold on. We are just gonna brush over Chris’s update on calf guy?!
Gotta pay for those implants somehow...
That seemed like such an insane epilogue that was so quickly brushed over, it makes me wonder if there's not gonna be some sort of follow-up. Like, it even looks like there was something cut because they decided "we can get another episode out of this."
After a hysterectomy and hip replacement back to back, nobody is cutting on me again unless it’s life saving.
Matteo, you could make a fortune doing voice acting. Seriously. You have a one of a kind voice and I flippin love it.
yessss I'm so glad this series is still running! It's insane to look back on what was constantly on tv back in the day
🙋🏻♀️ Forever burned in my brain as well - especially the hotel scene attempting to get the pizza. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve looked at gym bros that have a huge upper body and twiggy legs and thought of this damn episode 😂😂
@ Matteo should do the Flavor of Love next, if even for Tiffany ‘New York’ Pollard! That was gold!
Having Incubus playing in the intro clip for this show is the oddest part of the entire thing.
I thought the same thing, so random
For real! I thought the same thing!
Around that time, MTV used the popular music at that time. Which means, if they are playing Wish You Were Here, that means this is from like 2001.

@Matteo - you need to find him and do a cooking episode with him while you talk about his MTV experience...
THIS!!!
Yes!!!
Yes we need to see if his calves are still SERVING
This specific episode of true life is my Roman Empire. I’ve thought of this man quarterly for the last two decades.
Also, dying at the Incubus instrumentals in the background 😂
Matteo: The Fashion
My Brain: Ah yes the Sean Cody Chique look
I remember this episode because he and his new calves are still single.
Because he’s still a Beta
Oh I remember this. I wanted to get a plastic surgery or a nose job at the time until I watched this series and saw how it’s done. Freaked me out so much, I didn’t want to do it anymore. The blood, people.
Everybody looks the same skip the nose job template and look like yourself!
THISSSS as a young girl in the early 00’s I thought I also “needed” future plastic surgery. This and nip-tuck? Surgery is VIOLENT.
Absolutely horrified me out of the idea completely
We gotta see that Tyra segment.
Like many people, he needs external validation and approval. Once you release that bullshit you live a happier and healthier life.❤
9:05 he was never going to achieve the calves he wanted purely due to his genetic makeup and body composition. Nothing wrong with a surgery like this to quell an insecurity that couldn’t be changed otherwise. He’s unabashedly proud of his hard work and unabashedly honest about getting the calf implants!
Love True Life! Please do more of these.
Much needed serotonin on a Sunday morning! ❤
Love this series you're doing!

Yes! I totally forgot about that show but its a great idea. I miss these shows
This one may be too dark for your channel but "True Life: I'm Obsessed with Staying Young" is some of the WILDEST reality TV I've ever seen.
10 years ago I worked construction with a guy that had calf implants, didn't know it was a thing until he showed me .
Saddest part is that guy has no friends. No one to look after him in the Econolodge?! 🤷♀️
Nothing makes me laugh more than Matteo reacting to early 2000s TV. There was another show on MTV called world's strictest parents. You would have a field day with this show 😂😂
Matteo lookin' good on that white couch.👌🏻
1:28 he could’ve just worked out… 😂 calves are so easy to build. 😂
2:33 lmao you said it right after I commented. 😂😂😂❤❤
I loved this show. I remember this episode so clearly!
I have never once given a second thought about a dudes calfs! 😄 If I found out he had the surgery I would be realky weirded out!
His calves are perfectly fine but he is overtraining them working them every day at the gym. The muscles need time to repair and build new tissue. Working them out everyday is just tearing the muscle down and it has the opposite effect of hypertrophy.

I remember watching this episode. Thank you Matteo for bringing joy to my life. Such a good show last night in SLC ❤
god this episode, truly scarred for life. I'm not saying it made me a lesbian, but we can't prove that it didn't.
Maybe it’s just me but if my plastic surgeon can’t spring for a marker that actually makes ink marks when I’m on a tv show, I’m not impressed him. Or somebody. Production maybe?

6:40 "Ewgh, that hotel." My thoughts exactly.
OMG I REMEMBER THE CALF IMPLANTS!
I was just talking about True Life with my lil bro last night. He said they came to his HS in the early 00’s but can’t remember which episode it was. I remember the True Life “I’m on ecstasy” episode and showing it to my friends, who were rolling every weekend at the time and it made them stop!
I quote the calf implants guy at least once a month 🤣
I remember this episode and feeling a lot of sympathy for this guy. He seemed so painfully lonely.
Matteo, I'm watching The First Wives Club for the first time in *years*, and I can't help but think of you! I hope you come again to Madrid soon; I'd love to see your live show!
I love The First Wives Club. Now I need to watch it soon since it's been years since I've seen it.
@prettylillette1352 it's so good! One of the best comedies of the 90s!
I remember the calf implant guy from MTV! My husband and I STILL joke about him needing calf implants.
I just had a thought, if the calf guy was 24 when this was filmed then he has to be at least 44 years old now! What happened to calf guy?!
"he needs someone to help him after the surgery. nick helped me after mine" matteo we both know you would've been better off by yourself
"I dress up as well as I can and look my best."
"...It's a white shirt."
🤣🤣🤣
The True Life where a girl becomes a beach life guard is one of my favorite episodes of TV all time. I am still cheering for her!!
I want to buy your book for my dad for Christmas. He is a Vietnam Vet. It would really piss him off and that just makes my heart Happy.
That poor delivery guy. Imagine just shirtless muscular man with a walker and a camera crew 😂
I'm loving all of these revisitings of early aughts reality shows. I will watch all of them.
I got laser skin resurfacing when I was 24 to get rid of cystic acne marks. It felt like my skin was literally burned off ky face for 4+ months. But my skin to this day is clear AF. Also, if I remember right this guy did p*rn to pay for this.

i have NEVER forgotten the blood dripping down his calf!!!!!
Omg same, burned in my memory
I SO remember this episode too! And, yes agree w/ Mateo MTV was a juggernaut in this era
I wish we got an impersonation of nick helping you after surgery
Realistically, maybe his workouts were missing something? The guys from Twinsauce have huge calves, but aside from working out, they dance too, so maybe he needed to do more stuff. Ironically, one of the Twinsauce guys is named Luke. lol
Im living for this True Life series more please
true life was and still is my favorite MTV series
I actually can't get enough of these videos. Also, calf-inplants are so dangerous.
Dealing with and growing out of your imperfections is one of the best learning tools in all of SpaceTime 🙏💗
Matteo: after watching this, I had to look up this dude and his "film catalogue". I found one under "Tony Cage". It was a solo "performance", so in it he was not TECHNICALLY gay for pay. I wonder what those implants look like now.
Calves are mostly genetic I think, either you have a tree trunk or you don't.
Yes. They are like the only muscles that you can’t grow. It’s weird
Wading through all the garbage in Google something about Achilles tendon length, muscle fiber makeup, and genetics
Yep cause I'm scrawny all over but my calves look like I hit the gym daily, so did my mum's and my Nana's 😂
Oooh that makes so much sense! My husband has crazy thick legs and anytime his weight has changed his legs stay the same 😅😅
I will never forget this episode. Memory unleashed and I’m not thrilled about it.
I like how at the end all you hear is “he resurfaced in gay porn” then Mateo….”oh” 😂
Just bought tickets to see you in Baltimore! Yay!!
The True Life: moving to New York might be a fun one for you. If y'all do the episode of Made where the guy tries to get a girlfriend, I'd die.
Love these retrospectives!
I have a fuzzy memory of Jennifer Love Hewitt screaming for a fan in the show "FAN-atic"! Also, Making the Video was an MTV treasure trove 💀💀💀
I love Matteo!!!
Holy sh!t, I remember this one. Mostly because of his continued use of the phrase "I'll be the total package" constantly.
I remember watching this on MTV. Watching you watch this got me thinking that I may have watched this exact episode the exact same time as Mateo when this first aired.
I don't miss the body glitter era😂. That sh*t was everywhere!
I love how I'm a survivor by destiny's child is playing while he's using the walker to get his pizza 😂
Omg, I am old😂 I remember this show vividly
Dude! Now your making me feel old. The one episode of true life i watched back in my day.
The calf implants were wild. I specifically remember watching that when it came out.
Yay!! You're coming to Toronto 🥹💜
SOOOO crazy that you ALSO remember this weird ass episode. I never forgot it either. 🤣🤣
Thanks for the follow up on him. Sounds about right.
Omg I wish we had a vlog of Nurse Nick tending to Matteo post surgery!
Worst bedside manner ever.
Saline implants last 10 years, silicone implants last 99yrs
Not true
Ufff nope
Incubus playing during his shirtless intro is absolutely iconic for the time
