thought I'd just say, I'm 20, living on my own with very little money, and I watched this video and it's helped me so much with my shower cleaning! I absolutely loved doing something like that since I've never done it before and this video was a HUGE help! thank you Charlie for your help, 7 years later 😂
Honestly my mind was blown when you got the screw out and separated the pieces. I have the same one and did not know it separated I've been struggling for so long! So glad I watched
Watching this at 5am as it’s been a struggle I’ve been battling with in my previously slightly neglected flat since I moved it (which has had 3 previous owners in the last ten years) So satisfying to watch! Love how homemade and affordable the solutions are - so simple 😊 Thank you 🙌🏼
Thanks man!! I am a teenager willing to help my parents and i searched for this video, and this was the first one on the search list and it looks exactly like my drain! What a great tutorial!! Thank you soooo much!

I got sick & tired of cleaning my shower trap so have decided to rip it out & replace with a bath tub or install a high rise shower tray - only IF I can use a shallow/regular P trap on it instead of these poxy shower bottle traps.
I've just moved and have one if these in our shower, which wasn't draining. Thanks to you posting this I can now remove and give a clean. Thank you. You've probably saved me many ££££ from calling out a plumber for a blockage.
Thanks Jane, really glad you found it useful. Yes this needs to be done every few months as a bit of hair can quickly reduce the water flow rate through the waste. 👍
Aw, so glad to hear you found it useful. Just remember, when you find yourself standing in water, that's your drain telling you it needs declogging again - which will probably be every few months!
I know this was made 6 years ago but we just recently moved to Belgium and I was wondering how to clean my shower drain. I’ve never seen this type of drain trap before. Thank you so much for the detailed How To!! I’ve also noticed that I may need to buy a new one since I don’t have all the parts in my drain 😢 I appreciate you for making this video. 😊
👍🏽 After finding lots of shoddy work by a local so called handyman, I'm now having to put right a issues that he claimed he'd sorted. Your video has saved me a lot of aggro and money to fix our shower 🚿. Thanks 👍🏽 and keep the video coming.
Excellent thank you. I just cleaned ours because of a drain smell, I didn't do it as well as you ! So now I will be out with the vinegar and brush to do a better job! Thank you!
Good and clear video Charlie. The only extra step I do with ours is to give it a final few plunges with one of those super-size plastic hand plungers that sort of concertinas down as you press it. Given they don't have any rubber seal or anything (just plastic throughout) their suction power is phenomenal. I find it helps pull up a load of dirt from further down the waste pipe which i can then just wipe up with some kitchen roll.
thank you so much, I struggled praising chrome cover off (female pensioner with athritis) BUT rest was super clear and easy to do. screw was bit corroded so need to investigate that. very pleased.
Thanks so much for this video. I recently moved into a new build house with this type of drain cover and had no idea how to clean it properly until I watched this 😊
Excellent (though unavoidably a bit stomach churning!!) description of how to clear a shower drain of hair etc, but even after that my shower tray still I think rather slow and as it’s shallow I often get a little spillage outside. What can I use to clear the area and pipes below?
I would use a drain cleaner (a 'drain blaster' device) that uses a plunger to drive lots of water rapidly down a drain pipe. Fill the drain to back up as much as possible (i.e. keep the shower water running fast) and then blast the drain line by quickly locating the blaster on the drain inlet at the shower tray and operating the plunger! Probably hair or even builder's debris in the line. Repeat as necessary.
Thanks so much Charlie! I recently moved into my new house, and had never encountered a shower drain like this before, and was struggling to work out how best to clean it, as it seemed to be getting filthy every other week!
Useful tip. If you take all the gunge, no need to disassemble, and simply hold in whilst flushing in a clean toilet the water jet will remove most of it. An old toothbrush with Cilit Bang helps also to scrub the junk out!

Thanks... drain sorted 😀 I didn't know there was a secret waste compartment!!! 😆 It looked like a solid piece but actually, thanks to your video, I realised it must be there. Wish the plumber had shown me when he fitted it! Thanks
Hi Charlie, great tip to unscrew the chrome part as I find this very hard to clean! Can you please help further as it's actually the drain that's blocked and really difficult getting into clean it, any help to resolve this would be excellent?
Thank you so much for the video, I was scratching my head thinking how I will re-attach the drain top but watching your video I realised it was a screw holding it all down
Thank you Charlie, was driving me nuts as could not remove the top and felt like it was going to break! After watching this have got it out and all cleaned and gleaming now :)
Really glad to hear that Ellen 👍 You'll probably have to do it every few months, or when you find it's not draining properly. A bit of a pain but the design is quite clever because it stops all the hair going further down the drain where you can't get to it.
I've never tried to properly clean the entirety of the system before. I just removed some hairs from the white cylinder and called it a day, without realising the hair trap was clogged. Now I understand why my shower keeps smelling and can't seem to stay unclogged for more than a week!
Never knew you could unscrew that part. I'll be adding a screwdriver to my cleaning bag. Vinegars.great but I never use because the smell isn't pleasant! The trying to clean it without unscrewing that makes it hard so knowing how to take apart you can use another product. I still think they could come up with a better design. I clean people's everyweek any many of them stink 7 days later however thoroughly cleaned and with whatever product cleaned with (tried them all). Only thing that helps somewhat is taking removable part out after every use and sitting it on shower floor.
I was about to try and snake the drain as I thought I'd cleaned it all... But I didn't know you could remove the odor trap and there was a bunch more gunk to clean! So thank you!
I have a similar type of drain and your tutorial is very useful. However, I have a problem in so far as the cover of the drain does not come off as easily as the one on your video. The seal is so tight that the drain cover cannot come off without exerting a lot of force. I’ve already broken two drain covers trying to lift them off. Any tips ?
We had our bathroom completely gutted and new shower in, the old one never had this type of filter and the new one was blocking up, ended up leavjf it lying out when having a shower to stop the water from blocking. So I'll def give this a go over the weekend 👍
Yes, you don't want to do that for too long Keith as then the hair etc will bipass the filter and block the pipe. You have to clean these every few months ideally.
Hi I have a shower very similar to this. I removed the drain cover and the shower tray waste trap simmilar to how you have done on this video to clean everything. I then clean the rest of the shower and and turned the shower on before resembling everything to get rid of cleaning soloitiob and soap suds. Just came across this video and it's so helpful, thank you!! My components are the same except I have a hex key screw instead of a Phillips and I cannot get it out to clean the parts😢
Great video - thank you 🙏 Every time I remove my hair trap there is always water sitting below. Should this drain away somewhere?... because it's not. Also just had a bath in middle floor bathroom and its caused my en suite on the top floor to smell of rotten eggs. I don't think it's a coincidence. Praying its nothing major.
Yes you mustn't remove that water. It serves a very important purpose - to stop smells coming up the drains. That might be why you can smell rotten eggs.
@CharlieDIYte wow thank you so much for taking the time to respond. I haven't removed the water but I've just tried the vinegar/water combo and given it a good clean. Fingers crossed the egg smell goes away. Thanks again, such a helpful guy and much appreciated 🙏❤️
Hi Charlie...great video thank you...But even after cleaning it all.. the water still seems to take too long to drain. I've tried a snake tool on the pipe (no blockage) and also unscrewed the maintenance cap outside to see if it was blocked..and it isn't! Any ideas please. Thanks
Our shower has a different fitting. When you take the chrome cover off there's isn't a trap connected to it, just a thick horizontal pipe in the drain with no apparent opening or anything to remove. It connects to the plastic surround of the drain opening with two screws. I removed the screws however that just dropped the pipe down about ten mil max with nothing apparent for unblocking. There was some debris under the chrome cover but not enough to cause the blockage. Any ideas? I'm thinking maybe a plunger.
Just a guess, but maybe it's like here in my house where the waterlock is in the floor instead. Then you have to move the whole shower to get to the waterlock underneath it.
@@sumbalyousaf7273 I didn't sady. I tried using one of those spring/bendy cables to collect hair etc however once it's in a few inches I can't find where the water is supposed to drain from. In the end we just use a plunger about once a week to force any buildup down.
@@KennethGundersen Only just saw this sorry. You could well be right. We've been using a rubber plunger about once a week and that's been keeping it clear.
Sadly my inherited tray waste like you show is heavily scaled 😢 if I take it to pieces can I soak the plastic bits (minus the chrome top) in kettle descales? TIS
Pretty sure I’ve got this exact one myself but I’m trying to pull the cover off and I just feel like anymore force will possibly break it, just won’t pop out. Any ideas?
Hi Charlie - thank you so much for this video! I followed your instructions but there is stale/standing water below the outlet pipe. In your video there was none/it was dry. How can I remove this stale water? Do you think this is a faulty drainage unit? Many thanks in advance
No, the only reason there was no water is that I had cleaned it out. As soon as you turn the shower back on it will return and it's crucial as it stops smells coming back up the drain from the sewers.
Hi! Thanks for this video! We moved house a year ago and I couldn’t figure this out! The previous owners had lost the screw connecting the cover to the trap so it’s always separate. However, the water container bit is stuck and I can’t remove it to clean that gunk off, which I’m sure is blocking the drainage! Any tips?
Unless it's a different type of trap Janelle 🤔 You can also buy replacement covers that include the chrome lid and container bit. I'm afraid I can't help you with removing the container without knowing what model it is.
The chrome of the top of my shower drain has gone bad due to the caustic product used. Is there anyway we can replace it from the top? Can you buy it without the attached drain? Not sure how you called the different part. Thanks
I have the same design of drain but a little different fitting. The difference is that there’s not any screw that locks the plastic with the silver tape, so when I pull the silver tape it doesn’t opens correctly and It’s like stuck in the bathtub the plastics. Any idea about this ?
We recently bought a house that has this exact shower drain, and it really smells despite us cleaning the parts shown in the video. Do you have any tips at all for cleaning the pipes further in?
It's important you leave water in the trap after each use as otherwise you'll get foul smells coming up the pipe. D'you know where the pipe goes outside? I have been known to pass a hose pipe through the window and flush out the pipe with that. But you shouldn't really need to if you keep the shower trap clean.
Hi We have a problem when we let the bathwater out and we get water coming from the shower Have cleaned shower trap and used soda and vinegar Works a bit but still fairly regular issue Do i need a plumber or is there something else to try? TIA
Hello, With one of these shower traps, do I assume there is not the familiar 'U'bend arrangement to stop smells coming back up the pipe, we seem to have a smell problem despite regular cleaning, thanks

Did you find anything for that kind of shower?
@@sumbalyousaf7273 I didn't sady. I tried using one of those spring/bendy cables to collect hair etc however once it's in a few inches I can't find where the water is supposed to drain from. In the end we just use a plunger about once a week to force any buildup down.
@@KennethGundersen Only just saw this sorry. You could well be right. We've been using a rubber plunger about once a week and that's been keeping it clear.
This is a very easy thing, what will you do when there is a block down the line?
The point of doing this is you prevent the dense stuff building up further down the pipe but there are some good rodding tools on the market.
Old video but oh so helpful - thanks Charlie!
You're welcome, thanks so much for the comment 👊
@@CharlieDIYteBrilliant channel, brilliant content - will help this numpty no end! Subbed immediately 😁
Soapy/foamy water seems to drain very slowly even after cleaning. Is there a bigger issue?
Wow, this was very useful. Job for tomorrow taken care of.
Glad you found it useful 👍
We recently bought a house that has this exact shower drain, and it really smells despite us cleaning the parts shown in the video. Do you have any tips at all for cleaning the pipes further in?
It's important you leave water in the trap after each use as otherwise you'll get foul smells coming up the pipe. D'you know where the pipe goes outside? I have been known to pass a hose pipe through the window and flush out the pipe with that. But you shouldn't really need to if you keep the shower trap clean.
Great help thanks- my least favourite job around the house!
You're welcome. Thanks for the comment. I have to do this every few months and all the sink traps. Well worth it though.
Hi We have a problem when we let the bathwater out and we get water coming from the shower Have cleaned shower trap and used soda and vinegar Works a bit but still fairly regular issue Do i need a plumber or is there something else to try? TIA
Works for bath tubs with push-in plugs too (found so much hair in mine, kind of disgusting to touch it lol).
But satisfying when you'd cleaned it out!
Hello, With one of these shower traps, do I assume there is not the familiar 'U'bend arrangement to stop smells coming back up the pipe, we seem to have a smell problem despite regular cleaning, thanks
