  • One of the most skilled German generals of the Second World War, was Erwin Rommel who became known as 'The Desert Fox.' He was a very well-respected Field Marshal who was even admired by his enemies, but he would be slaughtered by Hitler as he was linked to a treasonous plot. But because of this Rommel had no choice, and he would die by his own hand inside of an SS staff car.
But he was then given a huge state funeral, and many people across Germany regarded him as a hero, and Hitler hoped that the state funeral would unite the nation. But the funeral was not what Erwin Rommel wanted at all.

In the 1970's I went to an event {one of many} where General Rommel's son and Gen Patton's son spoke together at Ludwigsburg Germany ...I was stationed there in the US Army , it was very emotional to see their sons together in peacetime

That's amazing, you were very lucky to have witnessed that. When my grandad was stationed in Germany as a member of the British Army, he saw Luis Armstrong preform.

@@woodenseagull1899 No, he was a Sergeant when he left after he finished his 3 year service. He was a recovery mechanic in the Royal Electrical Mechanical Engineers.

He at least once addressed some captured allied soldiers with words to the effect "Today gentlemen you are my prisoners, but tomorrow I may be yours!"

One of the best armored commanders of all times! During Operation Desert Storm Americans carried Rommel's picture in tanks, once an Iraqi asked why they have such respect for a former enemy, the American officer said Rommel's tactics is the reason you're our captives and not the other way!

You are a good historian. Followed your stuff on podcasts and here for a few years now. Thoughtful, interesting and above all you try to be as objective as possible. Always strive to be objective (not easy). Thanks again.
