    I actually WEPT at this reaction. Thank you. It feels like last week this came on the scene and blew us all away. Devo came out around the same time, Talking Heads too. We'd never seen anything like it and forty years later, we still haven't.

    I saw them the first time in 1980 in NYC. One of the best dance bands! The last time I saw them was at The Beacon Theater in NYC. On October 2022 for their last concert. OMG. The place was a Monkey House ! Dancing and singing to all the songs. I love The B-52s!!!

    Thanks for such an awesome reaction to this. It was pure fun back in the day, everyone embraced it for what it was, can you imagine how much fun it was to get up and dance to this? I've seen so many negative reactions to it recently, and it makes me sad that people can't appreciate the fun of it.

    It was 1979 and their songs started getting played in Aussie clubs I was under age but managed to get in. As a result of this club play, radio stations started to play this song & Planet Claire. They both got to Top-10 in the charts - so then this Countdown performance and a live tour (which I saw) before they had become famous in most other places around the world. Good times.

  • @dipsydoodle7988
    @dipsydoodle7988 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

    Ok, so first off, this isn't live. However, the official video for this song is an actual live performance. Highly recommend it. Second, bass you are hearing is actually Kate Pierson on Keys. Early B-52s did not have a bass player. Kate played the bass, did the kooky synth melodies and sang complex harmonies with Cindy simultaneously. These guys are legit live. I've seen them in concert probably about 10 times and each one was an experience to remember. Also, those girls can sang!

    Another fun fact is that the B-52s, as well as R.E.M., were from the Athens, Georgia (University of Georgia) music scene, which was the epicenter of college rock music in the early 80s.

    • @SquirminHermanthe1eyedGerman
      @SquirminHermanthe1eyedGerman 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I lived in Athens in the early '80s when that scene was happening, UGA is a great place to hang out & party still to this day & lots of great music! I have lived in Macon for many years now at the other music scene, the birthplace of southern rock with the Allman Brothers - GO DAWGS 2021 NATIONAL CHAMPIONS!

      Another Dawg here who was there from 86-90. Love Tractor, Dreams So Real, Widespread Panic, John Barry, Gresham Disco… so many great bands. REM was still around but too big for shows, but they’d play under fake names sometimes. I saw the Bs at Legion Field.

  • @ugadawgs1990

    The band is from Athens, GA, home to the University of Georgia where they were students when the band was formed. This song describes some of Athens. Also from this little college town: R.E.M., Widespread Panic, Drive-by Truckers, of Montreal, Neutral Milk Hotel, Azure Ray, Pylon, the Glands, Vigilantes of Love, Vic Chesnutt, Reptar, Apples in Stereo, Olivia Tremor Control, Dead Confederate, John Barry, Ravenstone, Danger Mouse, Love Tractor, and so many more. Just an amazing little town that The NY Times said is the birthplace of indie music.

    Was a teacher back then. A joy to see kids rock out to this at school dances. BTW This version has no bass (am bass player) but the guitar is classic Ventures Mosrite surf guitar with middle two strings missing. And duct tape. How cool is that?

    That song brings back memories in the early 1980's...where it was a favorite song played at the school stomps and dances. People loved the part where they would down...down...down...and lay on the ground...and then jump in the air all excited! A fun cult favorite.

    They look like the opening act for a Battle of the Bands at a College. It’s LOL! Hilarious! When I was 15 in the 80’s, I couldn’t figure the B-52’s out. But later got hooked to their music. They are tons of fun. The lead singer is priceless and yet, the band had so much energy on stage. ❤ I guess you could say. They’re from another PLANET. LOL! 😃😎👽

    Saw them at Pleasure Island (8 club Disney complex that existed before Downtown Disney which celebrated New Year's every night with confetti canons in the walkways outside and fireworks). They played on their own stage at the Dec 31,1999 New Year's Eve party. The best party band in the world. Greatest part is they played their last concert of 1999 late that night, and then came back out and played their first concert of 2000 shortly after midnight! Couldn't have rung in Y2K any better way.
