Love them early game. If you put your base to where it touches the workshop, you don’t need a path and that’s where a 4, 5 or 6 cluster can be worth it. I think the absolute best feature about them is the versatility in production levels and using it to push you through bottlenecks like you said. This mechanic is ideal for me or any other farmer in the club. I never fight with my players in the club because of cells. I like clearing the way for our strong players, it's fun to see them rushing at the enemy and eating their big cells. If everyone knows and accepts their role, weak players don't need to be jealous because there aren't enough level 10+ cells on the map. The workshops are fun to play with.
A little trick is to build workshop on lvl 1 tile by your base corner. So u wouldnt need a rss path and it would still be surrounded by 7 tiles
