Spyderco Tri Angle Sharpmaker Tips and How to Use It.

  • This video details how to use the Spyderco Tri-Angle Sharpmaker with the standard rods and the optional diamond rods. This sharpening system is one of the most popular, and most affordable on the market. I go over common mistakes made with the sharpmaker, and show you how to use it a bit better than the video details. I have used this system for years now, and it works well. To see all the features of this system, including stuff I didn't go over, watch the DVDs for more info. If you've ever wanted to know how to sharpen all of your pocket knives, this is a good place to start.
    Buy it here: amzn.to/2gP3BlP

    I think I have a handicap. I have never been able to sharpen anything. I consider myself a anti-sharpener; everything I try to sharpen ends up as dull as a pencil. I have a Tri Angle and I can’t seem to use it correctly. I finally just caved in and found someone in my neighborhood that likes to sharpen knives and does a fair job.

    Honestly I own a lot of sharpening systems, and am decent with stones. But I just bought a sharpmaker and have to confess, it makes touch-ups super easy and it gives a pretty good edge. I can see why it’s spyderco’s longest running product.

    After too many years to recall trying to find a good economical sharpener, too many pointless failed 'suggestions' on how to use them, and ruining/scuffing the shit out of good blades, a friend of mine who is a well-known chef gave me advice that I have found invaluable:
    Have an initial edge put on the knife right out of the box (around 18°, mirror polish) from someone that knows what they're doing, and after that after every couple uses spend 3-4 minutes on a strop, and the knife will stay razor-edge and never roll, chip or dull. It just becomes second-nature...quick and done. He has been proven correct.
    Between home and job I use my knives about every day and this method is the best I've found. The initial investment, as it were, of putting that mirror edge pays off in the long run both in money and time or frustration. I paid $25 for the DLT Standard Double Sided Leather Paddle Strop Sharpening Kit and it was one of the best purchases I've ever made.

    I actually let the weight of the knife guide the blade down against the rods (...light pressure to hold the blade steady/straight) vs. asserting pressure to do so. I found that I needed less strokes this way, and it won't eat up the steel as much.

    I bought a cheap knife at the hardware store to practice on the Sharpmaker. It has 440hc steel. The knife out of the package was surprisingly razor sharp. Sharper than anything I own and I have some nice folders. I ran it through the Sharpmaker and it made it duller. Not sure what I'm doing wrong..

    • @loganmcdade2973
      @loganmcdade2973 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Most knives that come from factory like that have different angles. The Spyderco Sharpener is set for 30° and 40°, typically you have to reshape the blade. You have to change the style of bevel, so the first sharpening will take the longest and most patient. Once you reset that blade bevel to what the sharpmaker has, the rest of your sharpenings will come way way easier. Just have patience 😊

    I'm looking at picking this up, for finishing touches. I have a KME, which is a complete set up in itself. But for bulk sharpening, I use a worksharp KO with blade grinder, but I'm not super happy with the finish, sure it's razor sharp, but, there's always that bit of convexity, which I don't like. I figure I can knock the convexity off with the sharpmaker, for perfectly flat, final bevels. Yes, I know I'm limited to 20° or 15°. But I often use 20° as a go to for most knives.

    • @AdvancedKnifeBro
      @AdvancedKnifeBro  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I've heard awesome thinks about the Wicked Edge but it's way out of my price range. I think some people that are more anal about the original geometry of the factory edge might want to go those routes. I just bought a stropman strop system... so when I get the hang of that I'll make a video about it too. I've heard stroping is the best way to maintain a factory geometry, as long as you do it often.

    • @dudumegafixe
      @dudumegafixe 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, for example, one doesnt usually need to sharpen razors. Some knives can be used a lot and they seem not that sharp anymore, but most of the times its just because the micro-teeth *bent over* to the sides and all you need to do is to strop them back into place without removing and wearing your blade much. But of corse, over the time, from all the bending and some teeth loses, the blade will eventually be much more prone to loose he edge easily and will need sharpening for some new teeth.
      I advice you to get some kind of stroping polishing paste for your strop so it can actually be used after you sharpen to make the knife sharper and to make it (the strop) more efficient. But hey, what do I know? I might just be a disapointment to my parents :P

    I see you've gone through the same stupid journey with the sharpmaker I did a few years ago (haven't been around in a while - got one when you first started your "Ganzo dive, as I like to think of it)... I still use mine when I'm feeling lazy -- which is a lot -- but definitely get better edge once I finally succumbed to figuring out free-hand. Though that made the Spyderco more useful to me oddly enough.
    In other news, I blame you for my own Ganzo dive. Though I've no idea even where many of them are. They arrived like a flock of bees and dispersed about my house and property. Every once in a while one shows up in a pack or a random garage drawer and tries to get me to use it. So i do.

    Most folding knives are at a 15 degree (30 inclusive) edge now though, right? I've always sharpened using the 30 degree side then used the 40 for a micro bevel. I could be fucking up for all I know because new knives usually take ages to get sharp for the first (non factory) time and then are a breeze after. The pm2 took me through a panic attack thinking the edge was fucked until I finally got it ball shaving sharp.

  • @EdgeStoneKnives
    @EdgeStoneKnives 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I thought while using the flat/wide sides of the stones, if sharpening a knife with a curved tip (aka a belly), you're supposed to tilt the tip down as you sharpen the curve. If you keep the entire knife edge perpendicular to the table even thru the blade curve, it'll drastically decrease the angle on the curved end. Or am I totally wrong? I know this isn't an issue when using the edges of the stones though. Please advise. Thanks!!!

    • @AdvancedKnifeBro
      @AdvancedKnifeBro  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That tip is not in the official spyderco video. However this is easy to practice yourself on a cheap knife and a sharpie. It is also not recommended to move on to the flats until the edge is set by the corners. I have found the tip on most knives sharpens at a different rate than the standard edge.

    Is it just me or does the corner stone make it sharp but the second I got to the flat side it ruins in? I find I can get razor sharp by just going grey corner to white corner and never touching the flat sides. I also just made the mistake of using this on some insanely expensive Japanese kitchen knives. Now I'm needing the diamond stones to re-profile, but 5 years after this video, they are $100/set now.

    When you're using the flat side of the stone are you holding the entire blade flush with the stone???

    • @AdvancedKnifeBro
      @AdvancedKnifeBro  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Smiffer Smaffer no... you always hold the blade exactly the same ... straight up and down. You move downward holding the blade level and pulling backward.

    • @smiffersmaffer
      @smiffersmaffer 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Advanced Knife Bro when you use the flat side of the stones , holding the blade straight up-and-down and perpendicular to the stones. The entire blade of the knife will not touch you have to hold the knife at a ever so slight angle if you would want the knife to touch the stones but still have the knife vertical. Do I just hold the knife perpendicular to the sharpener? Or do I can't the knife ever so slightly but keeping the knife vertical so it would make contact with the flat side of the stone?? That is my question?? Thank you for the reply is greatly appreciated!!👍🏻

    • @smiffersmaffer
      @smiffersmaffer 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Advanced Knife Bro so just keep the knife perpendicular to the stone and pull it the same exact way every stroke?

    • @AdvancedKnifeBro
      @AdvancedKnifeBro  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Smiffer Smaffer the stones sit at an angle... so you hold the blade perpendicular to the flat surface the sharpening system is sitting on. The blade is at a 90 degree angle to the ground. The sharpmaker comes with a DVD you should watch before you begin to sharpen any knife- or attempt anything seen in this video. That DVD is also split up into several parts on TH-cam.

    • @smiffersmaffer
      @smiffersmaffer 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Advanced Knife Bro I watch the video. All it says is to hold the blade up right.. it doesn't say whether to hold the blade perpendicular to the stones or to the base,, . LOL, I havent even bought a Sharpmaker yet, and I was already considering using the rods as an angle guide for another stone. Of course Im not really sure I need a guide. I think what I actually need is just the rods, something I can sharpen a recurved blade with, since the edge hits the corners of the stones where they are all chipped and rough, and it just won't take an edge like I want.

    I have the sharpmaker and get inconsistent results. It's a good idea to put tape over the body of the blade cause it's easy to slip and scratch your knife. I really want the kme system but for the cost I end up buying more knives!

    • @AdvancedKnifeBro
      @AdvancedKnifeBro  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on the knife... some it take 3-4 minutes... others 20 or more. The more the edge grind of the knife matches the edge grind of the sharpmaker the quicker it usually is. I have no troubles with my benchmades and most of my Spydercos

      @@AdvancedKnifeBro Would you saying you enjoy the process of sharpening knives? Judging from the videos I watched on it I feel like it's like a relaxing or a therapeutic activity for some people. Kind of like how Tinkerers get off on taking apart knives. I'm gonna be honest with you watching this video made me realize how much i'd suck at doing this and how little interest I'd have at getting better at it. I just wish there was an easy way to do this that rewarded the lazy and uninterested.

    Why are the department store knife sharpeners bad? The ones with the little white v rods set in plastic? Some have two sections….draw the knife through the first v several times, and then draw the knife through the second one t9 remove any tiny burr.

    • @AdvancedKnifeBro
      @AdvancedKnifeBro  ปีที่แล้ว

      Ive never found them to be consistent. Some take off too much metal others don’t take off enough. I’ve used them before and don’t like them. Sounds like they work well for your uses though.

    Pro tip. buy cheap ass knives to use if your just learning to sharpen free hand. You will regret learning on the good ones......but then finally after year's of practice you can make a semi sharp pointy stabby shank like piece of metal able to almost cut cardboard.

    Don't use the medium stones on any supersteel (like s35vn or ELMAX)
    The medium stones are too soft and will have almost no effect on the very tough steels

    • @MightyRude
      @MightyRude 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Donger Lord
      I think the bottom line is around vg10 or 154cm anything tougher you will need to test The stone should take off quite a lot of material and the edge should look rough (a bit ugly)
      The steel is too hard when the grind looks almost unaffected or when there is almost no steel grindings

    • @MightyRude
      @MightyRude 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Donger Lord
      You also don't want to use too much force (the sharpmaker requires little) or the blade might damage the stone
      You might want to sharpen a softer steel before you test if a steel is too hard for the stone

    Or if you want to destroy your knife collection (because you are too fucking stubborn to stop after you ruin one knife), you could shell out a grip of dough on the Ken Onion Worksharp belt sharpener. Not to mention you will only use it indoors once, as the dust will turn you and everything in the room into a world of fine glitter particulates. I’m going to save for a lifetime and get a Wicked Edge system.

    • @fsdarrell
      @fsdarrell 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a Work Sharp and it's great for rough working knives that I don't care a lot about how they look. It puts on a sharp edge fast, but it's really easy to scratch the blade. I also find it leaves the blade unsupported for the last 3/4 inch of the sharpening pass so the angle on the tip doesn't match the rest of the blade. I will never use it on my Benchmades & Spydercos.
