    Hi Jerry, Love your videos. I own and operate a machine shop by myself and I'm also a bird hunter. Every fall I travel to North Dakota for Pheasant hunting to get out of this hell- hole they call California. We deserve the time off, so get out and get some of those pesky hogs and enjoy yourself. Take care. Ps: Randy's mounts look great!

    Hi Jerry I am very pleased to hear with everything you have to do?( I started so now I will finish, got interrupted.) So with all those things to be done on the farm and the plumbing I was pleased to hear you say your going to take some quality time for yourself. There are few thing more relaxing than sitting quietly in the woods and should that target of opportunity present then that is just a bonus. Great video as always. God Bless Take Care shoot straight and true

    Gosh that sidewall process is pretty fiddly but very necessary, I can see that the mahogany pieces are so essential to give the mandolin strength in its unique shape.

    Your knowledge and level of expertise are astonishing. It is a lifetime of accumulated experience that really makes your work seem easy to replicate but, boy it sure isn't. there is a huge of accumulated knowledge that goes to the smallest detail of your work which means that one man's experience is impossible to duplicate. Thanks foral these extremely instructional and hugely detailed videos. One man's soul is the reality that can not be replicated and you leave your soul in the instruments you create and that my friend, is impossible to copy! Thanks for sharing a lifetime of accumulated knowledge. I hope I could express myself better in English but, you understand why I stay in aw after watching your videos. Looks great Jerry, lots of little pieces to hold all those pointy bits together. They needed to put those in the violin I'm rehabbing so I will on the reassembly. So I know there will be a story but why didn't you put the bench together the way you like it?

    To ease the bending, would soaking the strips not help soften them to the point where they will not crack like that? It helps with thicker pieces in furniture making, but was curious if there is a reason you don't use it?

    • @RosaStringWorks
      @RosaStringWorks 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      William it doesn't seem to help at all. I've tried it many different ways. Most people seem to think that on this extra curly Maple, you need to wet it even less, just barely spray it. I haven't tried that method yet so that'll be what I try next. Thank you very much for watching.

    Thanks for the video Jerry, it was very interesting to see the way you bend your sides. You did a very nice job, it's tough to bend sides. I was surprised to see you using Mahogany on your interior blocks. Is that something you do on the Loar or just typically what you use? I've usually used Ash or plain Maple but that's on guitar builds. I'm really enjoying your build but I also have to agree with everyone else, take time for yourself and enjoy life. :-)

  • @audiotechlabs4650
    @audiotechlabs4650 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Will you or have you put binding around the f holes, like where the top meets the sides, of this or any mandolin? I dearly love binding. Yes I know it is a lot of extra work, no more than the upper scroll of the body, but I wondered does it do any thing good or bad to the strength of the construction or sound or is it just for adding detail. This is is the only mandolin build I care to follow, so I may from time to time ask a question or so. I to have a lot to do here in Colorado to get ready for winter. I know you may not be able to, but if you shoot any footage of the saw mill, I and others would enjoy seeing it action. Have a good autumn and fall. Thankz

    • @RosaStringWorks
      @RosaStringWorks 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Audio Tech Labs binding around the f-holes is not out of the question. But I would have to charge extra for that. And the customer has not asked for it. I have never put binding around the F holes on any instrument that I filled so far. I may shoot some footage of various other activities. Thanks for watching.

    32:52 What is the mould made of? MDF or something?

    • @RosaStringWorks
      @RosaStringWorks 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes it's MDF and I have a rim around it to keep it up so that the sides are approximately centered. Most of these molds are made into pieces so that you can get the sides out easily. I have never had a problem with that been doing it for 30 some years and it's seems easy enough to get the sides out to me in one piece. Good luck to you.

    • @RosaStringWorks

    Wouldnt it be easier to bend wood if you really soak the wood, instead of just dipping? 🎶🎸

    • @RosaStringWorks
      @RosaStringWorks 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Edward Wunder I've done it both ways. It works just fine the way I do it. I think the main reason is because the wood is so thin the water goes straight through it in just a few seconds.

    • @driftwooder
      @driftwooder 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In my experience of bending sides for an F style Mandolin if you get the wood too wet it is almost imposible to bend them without breaking them. I just use a spray bottle to spray the wood for bending. The wood I get from Old Standard Wood is so curly it breaks real easy but it is the best quality wood I have found. I have one waiting to be polished right now. That is the longest 4 weeks of the build LOL. Thanks Jerry for sharing!!
